let's get to the latest on the newest health threat from coronavirus. five new omicron cases in the bay area. ama: the variant has now been found in a dozen states and 40 countries. scientists out of south africa have a new report saying omicron is that most transmissible variant, spreading twice as fast as the delta variant. >> here is what we know about these local cases. all five are adults living in alameda county. one recently traveled out of the united states and went to a wedding last weekend. not every covid test has been sequenced. we know of five cases out of the 12, including the person who went out of state. each of them was fully vaccinated and most had their booster shots as well. no one has needed to be hospitalized, the symptoms are mild. ama: 30 still a lot we do not know, even how severe it can be.

they're putting two recent cases for optimism. >> so far, it does not seem to be causing anything but a somatic or mild symptoms. that is the report this morning. people are vaccinating, they do not have any symptoms or they have mild symptoms. ama: so so so so so changed any guidance. >> our recommendations remain the same, regardless of the variant. dan: that means, get vaccinated and get your booster shot. if you have questions about the vaccines, ask our vaccine team. had to -- head to abc7.com ccine. ama: a woman passed away at at t as a result of cancer. she was made the chief of particle by the mayor, putting her in charge of the city's parties.

she had the unpaid position for 51 years. abc 7 news insider phil says she is known for great sense of style and was very into with the city. >> she was also known for bringing people into the celebrations. we think of the director of protocol, you kinda think of upper-level stuff. she could handle presidents and popes. she always made a point that the people should be involved in the celebration and have real access to it. as she told me, this is that people's city, the people's place, they need to be part of the celebration. ama: she was married to a former seo secretary, her third marriage. he died earlier this year at the age of 100. prior to that she was married to the man who owned a hotel. he died of cancer. dan: the family of kevin is making a public appeal to anyone connected to his fatal shooting, handed over please to the

reimagine policing in the city of oakland, city leaders are scrambling to get more officers on the street. there has been a surge of violent crime, including 129 murders. the latest homicide, a predawn shooting near castro and 14th street, the victim is an adult transgender person. while more police on the street sounds like a good plan, our abc reporter found out that not everyone was on board, including the police union. >> with violent crime skyrocketing inner-city, the oakland mayor announced a plan to beef up her dwindling police force. now it is below 7000 -- 700 police officers. >> we put forward a new police hiring plan which will increase police staffing by 60 officers. it will maximize recruitment and training of new officers and in years fiscal year, it will unfreeze 20 of the positions that are currently frozen. >> the increased staffing will

come from seven police academies, to more than the current plan. her $5.8 million plan will be funded from cost savings from a clement and salaries, not from taking away from any other programs. >> the damage that has been done to fund the police initiative is significant. with the mayor is trying to do is get back to where we were. >> other oakland city leaders question the plan. >> the reality is they are authorized for 737 officers. they have not hired for what they are authorized for. how is another academy going to fix the issue, if they are not staffed up with what they can do? >> i councilmember wants to offer a voters to experienced officers from other departments willing to move to oakland. >> it would not get new officers on the ground until 2023.

oakland is facing the highest homicide rate in almost a decade. >> the oakland police officers association does not believe officers from outlying communities will suddenly want to pick up and go work in oakland, even with a $50,000 bonus. oakland is losing 10 officers per month and about 80% of those are taking jobs in other departments, not retiring. laura anthony, abc 7 news. ama: police remain a visible presence in the union square two weeks after large groups of thieves hauled off thousands of dollars of merchandise. union square is one of the city's most popular holiday shopping destinations. the added patrols, they are there to make shoppers and merchants feel safe. today, california's attorney general general announcing names of five major players in an organized retail theft case. investigators found boxes and boxes of stolen goods stored in

a warehouse in warner creek. the items had been stolen for three years from residential and auto break-ins and from stores like target, cvs, walgreens across the county. it was described as one of the largest retail theft operations in the state. now, the five people involved have pleaded guilty for knowingly buying stolen goods and some reselling for a profit. today's message from the attorney general was clear. >> you will be held accountable. you will face consequences. >> the ringleader will be sentenced early next year. dan: if you think traffic jams are bad, the next challenge will be traffic jams in the air. from delivery drones, air taxis, local cities are trying to get ahead of the rush. >> what we will like to do is recover. ama: beheaded and broken. the damage done to this

he walks by the statue almost every day on the grounds of the museum. this week, the marble sculpture was vandalized. >> i do not know who these people are leather and full is on this, it is a shame. >> the crime is a major blow to museum curators. >> it is sad. this is a loss to the museum and the people of san francisco. this is a piece of public art that has been vandalized. >> the european arts generator sets vandals knock the heads off two sons of the great god, part of his life was destroyed. sadly, life imitates art here. >> we chose the goal struggling with serpents and his sons. >> here is what the sculpture look like before the vandalism. the piece was given to the museum in 1930. it is a reproduction of a sculpture in the vatican. curators think police are now

dan: climate central research also suggests that san francisco has warmed more than the mobile average, slightly, because of regional factors. let's turn our attention to the weather for the weekend. ama: our meteorologist is here with what we can expect. sandhya: it will change this weekend. today was a good day to hibernate at home and have some hot cocoa. unfortunately, or fortunately, many of us had to work so we cannot do that. maybe you have a chance tomorrow morning. let me show you live doppler right now. it is stopped in across the bay area. as we look at visibility, livermore and san jose down to four miles. part of it is the haze in the atmosphere, part of is a fog which is the problem in fairfield right now. visibility down to four miles. a dense fog advisory for solano county until noon tomorrow. a quarter mile visibility are with hazardous driving

conditions. this area, along with other parts of the bay, definitely will be something tomorrow morning. we are looking at downtown san francisco. 54 in the city. san jose in the mid-50's. from our golden gate bridge camera, the bridge is not foggy at this hour. if the one in santa rosa. 52 in napa, victory in concord. here is a lovely view towards the bay bridge, the fog over the bay as well. areas of dense fog tomorrow morning. sunnier and mild unscented. there is a better likelihood of rain next thursday, exciting news. i want to show you the air quality, whole fleet rain helps to improve that quality as well. because of the stagnant air, we still have pockets of moderate air quality. earlier, there were some areas that were poor, like livermore. here is a live picture from sfo. flights are moving just fine.
