for a person who aided them getting into a building. some charges might be filed against the person let them inside. they said the couple was likely trying to flee to canada. >> we have taken them into custody. james and jennifer crumbley. >> the parents of a teenager charged in the oxford high school shooting are in custody. >> they certainly appeared to be distressed. as i indicated, they were in a commercial building. we were able to take them into custody without incident. >> the couple lasting at their son's arraignment, they were due to surrender in front of their own arraignment but did not present themselves. the fbi and u.s. marshals office help the sheriff's office in the search, with u.s. marshals announcing an up to $10,000 reward for any information. >> there are a lot of things the

could have been simple to prevent. >> a timeline started with james crumbley's purchase of a pistol on friday. this instagramamamamamamamamam this one captioned testing out his new christmas present. there were several in classroom incidents where prosecutors say one teacher conference on spec searching online for ammunition on his phone. jennifer crumbley allegedly texted her son, i am not mad at you. you have to learn not to get caught. another incident happened the morning of the shooting, when prosecutors say a teacher confiscated and alarming drawing showing a gun, blood, and the words the thoughts will not stop. help b. -- help me. >> he returned back to class

with his backpack, where we have reason to believe the gun was stored. >> the shooting happening hours later. jennifer crumbley texting her son, don't do it. his dad calling 911 minutes later that his gun was missing and that ethan might be the shooter. >> the notion that a parent could read those words and also know therir son had access to a deadly weapon that they gave him , i think it is criminal. lisa: new developments. alameda county is confirming five new cases of the omicron variant. all five adults are adults living in alameda county. they were among 12 bay area people who attended a wedding in milwaukee county last weekend, including one who recently traveled outside of the u.s. not every covid test has been

sequenced. so far, we only know of five omicron cases out of the 12. the cases are mildly symptomatic and no one has been hospitalized. in the north bay, dozens of students from elementary school were forced to quarantine after the parents of one student knowingly sent them to class after a positive covid-19 test. abc 7 was at the school. >> there was a thanksgiving break unlike any other for dozens of families at the neil cummins elementary school. >> there is frustration and disappointment. >> around 75 students had to quarantine after one parent knowingly sent their child to class after they tested positive for covid-19. dr. brett geithman is the superintendent. he said school officials only found out about the positive case after a call from marin public health, asking whether student's infection had not been

uploaded to the school database. >> we learn the student had not been reported to us and the student attended school for the last seven days. >> parents received a text message the night of the 18th to bring their child to the gym so we could conduct testing before anyone enter the classroom. >> eight students tested positive. he said the school district has been clear about covid procedures since the start of the pandemic. >> in terms of an explanation about why they chose to send their children to school, their initial explanation was they were uncertain of the covid protocols. >> despite the outbreak, the superintendent said the system in place works in the situation is under control. several parents said it has been shocking but it is more of a one-off experience. some say they are happy with how the superintendent handled it. >> i have great respect for the

violent crime. the latest homicide, a predawn shooting next to 980 which claimed the life of an adult transgender person. more police on the streets sounds like a plan, a reporter found out not everyone on the board, including the police union. >> with violent crime skyrocketing, the oakland mayor announced a plan to beef up her dwindling police force. now well below 700 sworn officers. >> we have put forward a new police hiring plan that will increase staffing by 60 officers. it will maximize recruitment and training of new officers ended next year's fiscal year, we will unfreeze 20 positions that are currently frozen. >> increased staffing would come from seven police academies. shaid her $5.8 million plan

would be funded by cost savings from equipment and salaries, not by taking away from any other city programs. >> the defund the police initiative and what has been done with it is significant. she is just trying to get back to where we were. >> other leaders question the mayor's plan. >> they have not hired for what they are currently authorized for. how does another academy fix the issue if they are not even staffed up with what they can do? >> a councilmember wants to offer a $50,000 bonus to experienced officers willing to move from other departments to oakland. >> a traditional police academy approved today would not get new officers on the ground until 2023. oakland is facing the highest homicide rate in almost a decade. >> the oakland police officers

her elegance and her grace and professionalism were one-of-a-kind. >> her husband, the former secretary of state, died earlier this year at the age of 100. the ceo of planned parenthood northern california said they are already seeing increase in patients from texas as the supreme court discusses abortion rights. planned parenthood expects to see a surge in women coming across state lines to have procedures. the ceo said this could put a strain on the state's clinics. >> if the supreme court does damage to roe, we estimate 26 other states will begin to deteriorate abortion access for the residents in their states.

it is estimated that california could see a 3000% increase in patients coming to us. >> governor newsom said the state is standing by to help those and provide funding support. california's attorney general announced the names of five major players in an organized retail theft case. in september of last year, boxes of stolen goods were found in a warehouse in walnut creek. the items had been stolen over three years. it was described a a a largest organized retail theft operations in the state. the five people involved have pleaded guilty for knowingly buying stolen goods in order to resell them for profit. they also admitted to money laundering. >> you will be held accountable. you will face consequences. >> the ringleader will be

that fog settled in and never cleared for most of us. it did in gilroy and other spots that brightened into the 60's. overall, a dramatic change. the delta, a colder mile visibility. elsewhere around the bay, nine to 10 miles. there is a look at our advisory through noon time. you could see the visibility be reduced to about a quarter mile. use your low beam headlights. nobody on the golden gate bridge. the fog is not an issue. cloudy skies, looking for the clouds to thin out. hazy conditions in the afternoon. we are looking at cool temperatures. there is nobody out there. rain arriving on thursday. everybody is sleeping. you can see the clouds.

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. thijobina: good morning. you are watching abc 7 news. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. lisa: we will try to warm it up a little bit today. yesterday was awfully cold. we are mild to start, 54 in oakland, 47 in cloverdale. we have a dense fog advisory until noon time. the visibility out by the delta is poor at a half mile. san jose has some hazy, foggy conditions. as we get toward 11:00, clouds will thin out.

by 3:00, hazy afternoon sun with moderate air quality. mid to upper 50's, with some low 60's where the sun is shining. we have a warmer sunday on tap and we are tracking a level 1 system. jobina: omicron variant cases have been identified in at least 12 states. starting monday, all international travelers will have to show proof of a negative rapid covid test 24 hours before departure for the u.s. president biden said as of now, no testing requirements will be needed for domestic travel. >> we are actively taking steps to stay ahead of omicron. >> cases in the u.s. have had mild or moderate symptoms and no reported hospitalizations. what is driving hospitalizations, the delta variant, comprising 99 point 9%

of u.s. cases. the cdc's director said that could change. >> we could see more omicron than we have delta, and we will be following that carefully. >> early data suggests the omicron variant could be spreading twice as fast in south africa than delta and omicron could be more likely to infect people who have already had the virus. >> some mutations have shown to increase the infectiousness of the virus. >> it will take weeks to know if omicron is more contagious and how the vaccine works against it. dr. fauci said vaccination remains the best weapon. dr. fauci: there is every reason to believe that if you get vaccinated and boosted that you would have at least some degree of cross protection, very likely against severe disease, even against the omicron variant.

jobina: a drugmaker said it is voluntarily recalling 58,000 vials of remdesivir. a company said it has received a complaint about glass particles in its vials. the glass could reach blood vessels in the heart, which could cause a stroke or death. outrage and disbelief over the vandalism of a statue at one of san francisco's oldest museums. the greek statue on the grounds of the legion of honor was heavily damaged. members of the community are reflecting on the loss. >> oh my god. who would do this? >> he cannot believe it. he walks by this greek statue

vandalism and progress. there are other outdoor statues on the grounds, like joan of arc. none of them were damaged. the sculpture can be repaired but it will not be easy. >> what we would like to do is recover the missing parts. that would be most essential. >> they hope a tip from the public could help solve the crime. a true greek tragedy. jobina: now to a live look at interstate 80. this is a live look from our camera. i-80 will be shut down between red top road near fairfield. caltrans is closing both directions so crews can remove the old bridge to highway 12. the closure will last until 9:00 tomorrow. signs will be put up to guide people to the detour routes. the next challenge facing major

cities will be air traffic. the result of autonomous aircraft to transport people to goods and services. you are already familiar with drones. the next step is air taxis. abc 7 david louis takes us at at look at how san jose and others are scrambling to manage them. david: if congested streets and airways are not difficult enough, there will be an explosion of air traffic from delivery drones and transport vehicles known as air taxis. air taxis are projected to do 1.5 million rides per year over silicon valley. >> that is four times what is flying today. how do we integrate that into the area with safety and quality of life was to mas.s. >> trying to get ahead of the technology. the group's vice chair.

teaching their crafts, a lot of folks could not afford to live here. we lost a good number of faculty members. >> they were able to get about $75,000 in grants and set up a free pantry to help struggling instructors. it is now bringing back its holiday art fair. >> i am happy to provide a platform for local artists to display the work they are doing. >> there is a lot of talk about supply chain gifts and whatever but there are local people making amazing art. when you put money into those artists, you put it back into the community and it spreads for everyone. >> to meet people who come to the events, that is rewarding for me. i usually passed out after working a show. >> some of that stuff looks so great. the show will take place today
