cloudy skies. 52 hayward. 50 novato. northerly winds dry out the atmosphere a little sooner. look at that mile and three-quarter visibility in fairfield. 2.5 miles in half moon bay. look at the upper level winds. from st. helena to mount diablo 37 miles per hour. it is a cooler start, two to six degrees cooler. air quality will be moderate. we will break out to sunny and slightly warmer conditions today with more 60's arriving. we will talk about rain chances arriving as soon as monday night. another chance later in the week. liz: thank you. a trendy san francisco restaurant is explaining its decision to turn away and deny service to three on-duty police officers. there is a social media firestorm corrupting. one of the officers spoke with abc 7 news -- one of the owners

spoke with abc 7 news to explain their decision. staff at north beach brunch spot hilda and jesse seated the uniformed officers. staffers grew uncomfortable by their presence and asked the officers to leave, which they did. one of the owners told abc 7 news it has nothing to do with who they are but what they were all carrying. >> it is not about the fact that we are anti-police. it is about the fact that we do not allow weapons in our restaurant. we were uncomfortable. we asked them to leave. it has nothing to do with the fact that they were officers and everything to do with the fact that they were carrying guns. lisa: -- liz: she says officers are welcome to come back to their restaurant without their weapons. she agreed to the interview to clarify false narratives about why the officers were asked to leave. san francisco police chief phil scott is weighing in. he said the san francisco police department stands for safety

with respect, even when it means respecting which is our officers and i find discouraging and disappointing. i believe the vast majority of san franciscans welcome there police officers, who deserve to know they are appreciated for the difficult job we asked them to do in their uniforms to keep our neighborhoods and businesses safe. moving on, new developments with the omicron variant. it has been detected in 16 states. researchers in massachusetts theta variant may be more transmissible because it shares the same genetic code as the common cold. united kingdom is prior to departure. a flower shop in noe valley says it is so desperate to get new employees, that they will hire anyone who wants to work. reporter tim johnson spoke to

store owners. tim: welcome to french tulip flowers, and you will be greeted by this sign. >> we are taking anyone who is willing to learn and stay with us. tim: andre abril mob is the owner -- andrea taber mob is the owner -- andrei owner of the store. >> we have two employees. one of our employees retired. one employee just opened his own shop. tim: this is not the only shop having trouble getting employees. several say it is a persistent problem. just down the road at cassa muska,, jose rodriguez says his team has been shortstaffed for months. >> very worried about it. tim: issues like these have been popping up all around the

country says julia pollak, chief economist at ziprecruiter. she says the pandemic's effects on the labor market are pronounced. >> they do not have the position to compete on pay and benefits. they do not have entire departments devoted to human resources. tim: until the time comes when more help walks through the door, abramov says he will keep taking it one day at a time. >> just create a nice atmosphere. people like to work here. tim: tim johns, abc 7 news. liz: it has been two weeks since those brazen smash and grab robberies rocked san francisco's union square. the question is will it be enough to bring holiday shoppers back? reporter cornell barnard went to union square to find out.

reporter: holiday cheer is is is returning to san francisco's union square, and so were the crowds. >> it is really good. it is making me feel like we are into christmas. reporter: lydia and her fiancé jesse were taking in the sights but being careful after those into miss smash and grab robberies several weeks ago. >> we are being cautious. i got my purse where i can see it. reporter: since the robberies, police have made several arrests and increased police presence around the square, including this mobile command center. >> it is a safe environment. we have got lots of police officers securing the perimeter. you are seeing lots of families down here. reporter: this family from daly city came to shop. >> a lot of cops around the neighborhood guarding this stuff. we figured it is safe enough.

it is christmas time. reporter: luxury stores are open but still boarded up. security guards out front. the holiday shop is crowded with shoppers. >> i encourage people to come down. there is a strong police presence. feeling good about what we are seeing. reporter: street closures around union square are happening daily from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. to deter crime. the city giving another shopper -- giving another incentive for shoppers to come here. gina and don were not sold.ere o they did not like the vibe here. >> a lot fewer people. a lot of fences. a lot of police. it is not the same feel. reporter: after nearly two years of pandemic stress, many folks say they need some yuletide cheer. >> you have to move on. let's enjoy this season. reporter: cornell barnard, abc 7

news. liz: the troubled safeway store in san francisco has installed new security gates in response to an increase in shoplifting. the chronicle reports these automatic gates at the safeway quickly shut behind customers. it prevents would be thieves from running out with shopping carts with items. the stores added barriers around the self checkout area, making customers go through one exit. this safeway used to be open 24 hours, but last month, started closing at 9:00 p.m. only on seven, and open women nearly missed getting your first snatched -- her purse snatched. the the the the stairs and grabs her handbag. that is when her 17-year-old son and 22-year-old daughter chased

the man away. she says it is what's needed to be done. >> sometimes parents get nervous easily, and they do not know what to do. as the younger generation, we try to protect the older generation. reporter: jamie says her family has been attacked two previous times in oakland as well. they are adding security cameras to their home. she is thankful for neighbors who saw what was happening and helped provide surveillance to oakland police. there have been no arrests. in the north bay, we are learning about a major chop shop bust that involves stolen porsches. the fugitive who was wanted for stealing cars has been arrested. 77-year-old wayne krieger of novato is in custody. officers rated two locations in

san francisco and nevada. they found eight classic porsches along with car parts and counterfeit vin numbers. lisa: we are looking at high-pressure compressing that marine layer. it is foggy. gusty winds will be in response of that compression of the marine layer. that means we are going to see some clearing. i will have the details and talk about rain chances coming our way next. liz: also ahead, bail is not set for the parents of the accused michigan school shooter. the charges they are facing after their son allegedly killed four classmates. toy drives are in full swing. how the san francisco police department is making sure every kid gets a

the students killed last week. several people took the stage to speak to the crowd, including sheriff's and the governor of michigan. 15-year-old ethan crumbley is accused of shooting and killing those students and injuring seven others. a judge has set the bond for the parents of the accused shooter at half million dollars each. they were taken into custody friday night after being found in an art studio in detroit. james and jennifer crumbley are being held separately in the same jail as their son. police believe the couple had help getting into a warehouse. they say anyone who helped them may face charges. prosecutors say ethan carried out the shooting using a gun bought by his father days earlier as a christmas present for him. the pair is charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. both have pleaded not guilty. ethan has been charged as an adult and faces more than 2000 counts. he has pleaded -- more than two dozen counts.

he has pleaded not guilty. officers pulled the student from class and searched his backpack. investigators say the student most likely did not intend to use the weapon or threaten anyone. he has been booked into sonoma county jail for possession of a concealed handgun and bringing a gun onto a school campus. volunteers accepted donations of clothing and housewares in hayward. the community is working with refugee assistance groups to establish the center as a hub for distributing items refugees need as they settle in. in the southbay, generous members of the community helped fill a bus full of toys this holiday season. bta partnered with the marine corps reserves for its annual stuff the bus event. you cannot miss the action with the bus parked in the middle of

christmas in the park in downtown san jose. kindhearted locals came through donating new toys, books, and stopping stuffers that will surely delight many kids. [bells ringing] after a hiatus last year because of the pandemic, downtown redwood kicked off the festive season with its hometown holiday celebration. the caltrain holiday train pulled into the station decorated with more than 75,000 lights. >> we missed everything last year. we go to the train every year. >> it is nice how other people, and everybody is together. >> we are excited to be out here again. it is nice to see the community. liz: the festivities continue at 4:15 this afternoon with the hanukkah festival in courthouse square. the san francisco police

department's toy drive is in high gear. officers began collecting donations at city college ahead of the northern california football championship game. the department is partnering with walgreens to make sure no kid in the city and county of san francisco goes without receiving a gift this holiday season. >> we are asking our community to step up. come out. there are boxes across our city so they can drop the new unwrapped present. liz: you can use of ml and gofundme to donate. there are qr codes at the bottom of the toy drive posters. it runs through december 21. the santa clara county fire department will hold a toy drive at three locations. sunny oakes, monte vista, and el monte fire stations. they will have a drive through you to drop off new, unwrapped toys. it runs from 10:00 to 4:00

when we talk climate change and sea level rise. we are looking at the fog here that has been more of an issue this morning than yesterday. we are looking at the coastal fog and a little tule fog. you get up to the north bay. it is about a half-mile in santa rosa. just a mile around half moon bay. the san carlo's airport now at five miles. the atmosphere getting mixed, which is some good news. that will help with this fog to scour out by midmorning the north wind from mount diablo. mount tam is up to 20 miles per hour. high-pressure building in compressing that marine layer. it is spreading out. we are seeing fog pretty much everywhere this morning. 47 pacifica. 50 redmond city. the two oakland. 46 napa. air quality once again as the

skies clear, we will have sunny conditions. we have moderate air quality to fairfield and down in san jose again this morning. here is a look outside. areas of dense fog this morning. sunshine this afternoon. scattered showers arriving monday night. we will be looking for those to move out of here before the tuesday morning commute. there is a look at the coastal flood advisory, which takes us through 3:00 into tam valley. foster city and over into parts of the bayshore looking at some low-lying flooding conditions. monday evening commute, some showers in santa rosa. look what happens by 10:00, 11:00. you are probably sleeping. we have what looks like showers moving through. they will continue to move through by 3:00 in the morning. gone before the morning commute. the amounts very light, anywhere from .05 to 0.1 inches.

liz: welcome back. travel rules have been changing because of the spread of the omicron variant. if you are traveling, going out of the country, experts say be prepared for restrictions and border closures. will travel insurance cover you? michael finney has advised. reporter: this may be time to get insurance. there are specific covid-19 policies that cover everything from potential quarantine to medical expenses. with the new rule requiring negative test results before coming home, you might want to think about this now. globetrotters were just beginning to come out of isolation when the new variant brought a fresh set of travel restrictions. experts say be ready for more rules during the holiday travel rush ahead. >> we are walking into the next

six weeks of complete uncertainty. there is a lot of last-minute decisions that are being made. a lot of restrictions are being put into place. reporter: travel insurance ceo omar says some countries may enact new restrictions or close borders if the variant spreads. rules require passengers to show a need negative covid test within 24 hours of their flight back to the u.s. >> this is something they need to plan and start as soon as possible to book their appointments because this is a requirement, and you will not be coming back on if you do not have your proof of negative covid-19 test. reporter: a positive result could mean being stranded overseas in quarantine. border restrictions may mean losing money for lodging and transportation. many companies offer specific covid-19 travel insurance. if you are going overseas, check for policies that cover expenses in case you are quarantined,

48 the votto. you can see the patches of fog around the bay. three miles livermore. oakland eight miles. we have strong northerly winds 20 to 40 miles per hour that will mix out the fog. it is a chillier start, two to six degrees cooler. by 9:00, we will have partly to mostly cloudy skies. it is going to be a cool start of the day with mid-50's arriving by noon. later in the day, we should see a slightly warmer afternoon with high clouds and sunshine and lower 60's and our warmest locations. we will talk about rain arriving as early as tomorrow night in some locations. liz: the number of omicron variant cases are growing across the country. more states are issuing warnings about the virus, even if they do not have any confirmed cases now.

health officials are continuing to push vaccinations as the response to ending the pandemic. here is karina mitchell. reporter: more states are detecting cases of the covid-19 omicron variant. washington state is confirming three cases. new york state is confirming three new cases, bringing the total to eight. given states with no confirmed cases are issuing warnings. >> we should not be surprised that it could possibly be in oklahoma. reporter: omicron was first detected in southern africa. one study there shows it is spreading twice as fast as the delta variant. >> a few weeks ago in south africa, there were 200 cases per day, now there are 15,000. reporter: the best defense against it and other variance is still vaccinations. in the past few days, more americans have been lining up to get their first shot or a booster. at long pope valley medical center in california, two months

ago, workers say 50 people would come in for a vaccine. on friday, they had more than 400 appointments. >> now that there is a new variant that we do not know a lot about yet, i can see why people are interested in being vaccinated. >> the science is clear. the vaccines help people to keep from getting very sick. the boosters added an extra layer of protection. reporter: 22 states have seen an uptick of 10% or more in hospital admissions in the past week. >> delta continues to drive cases across the country, especially in those unvaccinated. reporter: nearly 60,000 americans are hospitalized with covid-19. liz: the san francisco archdiocese has been outspoken about the vaccine, encouraging churchgoers to get the shot. the archbishop, the person meant to lead by example, has yet to be vaccinated against covid. lyanne melendez follows up on

his recent acknowledgment. reporter: pope francis admits he struggles with skeptics who refuse to get the covid-19 vaccine. here is the pope last august. pope francis said we must help others to do it, calling it an act of love. the archbishop appeared to be on the same page, stating i join pope francis and the u.s. conference of catholic bishops in advising you to get vaccinated if your doctor recommends it. in a recent interview, he admitted to the san francisco chronicle that he has yet to get vaccinated. the archbishop added that his immune system is strong and that his personal physician told him it is probably not necessary for me to be vaccinated. >> that is his opinion. reporter: an opinion not shared by many in the san francisco health department, who continue to urge people to get vaccinated. >> it helps protect you.

it helps protect your family. it helps protect other vulnerable people. >> i think he is entitled to his opinion. he is a public figure. everything he says has a lot of impact on other people. reporter: it is not the first time he has not followed the pope's teachings. in 2013, pope francis made global news when he reached out to gay catholics. >> the pope saying if someone is gay, and he searches for the lord and has goodwill, who am i to judge? reporter: the archbishop has been outspoken against gays and same-sex marriage. in 2013, protesters gathered outside of the cathedral after the archbishop warned all catholic school teachers to conduct their lives in a way that does not deny church doctrine. a group of churchgoers entered with their own rally to show support for the archbishop.

the archdiocese did not return our calls. >> i cannot see into his heart and mind. i cannot see how he has put that together. reporter: leanne, abc 7 news. liz: l.a. firefighters must be vaccinated by december 17 according to a judge denied a request to delay the enforcement of the vaccination indicate the union argued the mandate was not properly bargained and sought a preliminary injunction. around 400 firefighters risk being put on unpaid leave later this month because they have not been vaccinated. coming up this week, as more states report omicron cases, cdc director rochelle walensky will speak about the variant and president biden's plan to tackle covid this winter. you can watch that at 8:00 this morning on abc 7. president biden and russian president vladimir putin will speak in a videoconference this

week. the talks, as tensions escalate between the u.s. and russia over a russian troop buildup on the ukrainian border. nearly 100,000 russian soldiers are said to be on the border. white house press secretary jen psaki says president biden will bring up concerns about russian military activities. the meeting is tuesday. cnn anchor chris, has been terminated by the network immediately. this comes after an outside law firm reviewed exactly how cuomo helped his brother, former new york governor andrew cuomo, he issued a statement saying i have already told you why and how i helped my brother. cuomo was often the network's highest rated star. henry winkler is auctioning off props for charity. that includes the leather jacket he wore, as well as his

silver triumph motorcycle. winkler saved scripts and other memorabilia, which will be sold. it will benefit a nonprofit started by his daughter zoe. the home of the san francisco giants played host to more than 600 athletes who navigated staircases through the park. adults raised in a 5k and faced 20 obstacles. >> spartan is about getting people outside their comfort zone and working on overall fitness. liz: kids ages four to 14 a course with four obstacles. spartan holds events around the world for athletes of all ages

today. santa arrived on schedule at san francisco's airport. he surprised kids from four bay area children's hospitals. usually the airline takes children and their families on a short flight. they arrive at a gate at sfo that is transformed into the north pole. because of the pandemic, this year, the arrival level became a winter wonderland. >> it is wonderful. >this is our christmas. it is so touching to get to know about their children a little bit. we are going through some hard times. we are honored to make this year special for them. liz: a total of 55 families took part in the event held entirely by volunteers from united airlines. so touching. lisa: everyone gets excited this
