georgia reported its first case today, meaning it has been dead ticked it in at least 17 states. worldwide, it has been found in 50 countries so far. the bulk of the cases are out of south africa. a study out of boston shows those who got the pfizer vaccine may get the same benefit as a johnson & johnson booster shot as a pfizer one. meantime, the first cases of influence i have been detected in marin county, pointing to the start of the flu season which typically kills thousands of people each year. luz pena is part of our vaccine team and a spoke to experts who say the covid shot alone will not protect you from the flu. they are now concerned about a twindemic. she is live with much more. luz: there are several viruses circulating at the same time. we have 17 states reporting new cases of the covid-19 variant. meanwhile, the delta variant continues to be the mainstream

-- the main strain that. all these viruses are colliding this winter. on average, influence i kills 20,000 to 50,000 americans each year. now experts are concerned we might be entering a twindemic, with cases of the covid-19 variant, omicron, likely to rise. >> we don't know whether omicron will add substantially to that or not, but delta is enough of a problem as it is. we don't want people winding up in the hospital with delta and people winding up in the hospital with influenza and hospital beds getting filled with both of these patients. luz: uc berkeley says we are about two weeks from seeing how fast influence i will spread this year. that is about -- influenza wnfln spread this year. based on all this, experts say the flu shot is necessary. >> these vaccines are

well-known, well established. this year, we have four types of influenza. luz: he pointed to a flu outbreak at the university of michigan with more than 500 cases. in the bay area come on marin county says they are beginning to see the first cases of influence of the season. >> that is looking like a challenging winter for us. it is starting around marin county and that is true across the region. luz: nationwide, the cdc reported an increase of flu cases in recent weeks, with 80% of cases among children and young adults ages five to 24 years old. >> we are more concerned that we would see a surge of covid-19 related illness due to omicron. the last thing we need is people coming in with influenza at the same time. luz: there are vaccines for both

it happened early last sunday when a 31-year-old refugee from south sacramento was in the bay area for work. speaking through an interpreter, his wife says he was sitting in his car when somebody walked up to him and tried to steal his wallet before they shot him. >> he was a caring man. he was caring about his family. he just sacrificed his lift sacf his family. dion: uber says he was not working at the time. san francisco police are investigating the murder, but so far no arrests have been made. new details tonight about a restaurant's decision to turn away and deny service to three on-duty police officers. it happened friday in north beach. cordell bernard tells us the restaurant's owners today issued an apology. >> i am so upset. cordell: he was disappointed

to learn that three on-duty police officers were recently denied service at the restaurant on union street, just two blocks from central station. >> i hope one day they don't need the police. dion: the incident -- cordell: the incident happened friday at the new eatery, where three officers were seated and then asked to leave because staffers became uncomfortable. the co-owner told dion lim exclusively on saturday that it had nothing to do with who they were but what they were carrying. >> it is not about the fact we are anti-police. it is about the fact that we do not allow weapons in our restaurant. we were uncomfortable, so we politely asked them to leave. cordell: silcox says the officers were welcome to come back when they were off duty without the weapons. the decision igniting a firestorm of controversy on social media, where some called for a boycott of hilda and jesse. negative yelp reviews started piling on, giving the eatery one star. late sunday, a surprise

dion: the flag at the white house was lowered in half-staff in honor of bob dole. the longtime politician died earlier today at the age of 98. it will remain at half-staff through thursday. prior to tonight's kennedy center honors, nancy pelosi shared her memories of dole. she removed him for how he bridged the asile. >> it was a tremendous loss to lose bob dole. he has a towering figure, a great leader. he and elizabeth dole crossed the aisle, crossed every divide in our country to bring people together. it is a big loss. dion: dole represented kansas in the senate from 1969 to 1996. three times he ran for president, winning the republican nomination in 1996 before losing to bill clinton. karen travers has a look back on the life of the world war ii hero and lawmaker. >> it is time to win an

election. karen: bob dole never won office but was one of the most recognizable politicians of the 20th century. born in russell, kansas, his young life was taken up with his family's methodist church, the boy scouts, and athletics. in 1943, his studies were interrupted by the second world war. assigned as a platoon leader, he saw action against german units in italy in 1945. one month into that conflict, he was here easily -- he was seriously wounded. >> for a long moment, i didn't know if i was dead or alive. i lay down in the dirt unable to feel my arms. karen: dole was in and out of hospitals for three years and never regained the use of his right arm. after the war, he continued his education, attending law school. 18 years later, he was elected to the u.s. senate where he would emerge as a powerful national figure.

>> days after the alleged gunman pled not guilty to 24 counts, including four counts of first-degree murder, the parents pleading not guilty also to four counts each of involuntary manslaughter. the judge setting both of their bonds at half $1 million after the couple did not show up for their arraignment friday, setting up a manhunt. they were arrested the next morning inside this empty commercial building nearly an hour away. >> they certainly appeared to be distressed. as you can imagine. >> the attorney for six to five-year-old andre sikora, a polish immigrant who has a studio in the building, says the crumleys asked him for a safe place to avoid death threats before he knew they were facing charges. >> the minute he did find out, he himself went to law enforcement and told them that they were there. >> authorities say the crumbleys were trying to flee. they withdrew $4000 from an atm friday morning. but the attorneys insist they were not running and there is

more to this case fan what the prosecution has shared. >> when you listen to the prosecutions facts, it sounds like on the part of mr. and misses crumbley. >> tonight, new details emerging about the school's actions hours before the shooting. a teacher reported a picture drawn but the alleged gunman, depicting a person appearing to be shot and disturbing phrases like, the thoughts won't stop, help me. the superintendent said the students at the drawing was part of a video he was designing. the suspect stayed with counselors for an hour and a half, even doing homework, and at no time did the counselors believe this student might harm others based on his demeanor, which appeared calm. he was eventually allowed to return to class because he had no prior disciplinary infractions, and his parents refused to take him home. >the superintendent is now

calling for a third-party investigation into what happened here. he says this community and these families deserve a transparent accounting of what happened. the michigan attorney general is offering to conduct the investigation if the school chooses. they want to make sure it never happens again. trevor ault, abc news, oakland county, michigan. dion: federal investigators spent the day looking for clues to help them determine what brought down a single engine plane in california's central valley this weekend. the plane went down 16 seconds after taking off from the visalia municipal airport saturday evening. for people on board were killed. sheriff deputies say conditions were foggy at the time, but it is unclear if the weather played a role in the crash. the plane was registered to a sacramento resident. take a look at this video. watch closely. police in riverside want to catch this guy who has been nicknamed the snake burglar. he is seen in this footage

slithering on the floor of a hair salon after hours to burglarize the place. police say he did not trigger the motion triggered alarms. he made off with $8,000 out of the safe, along with some haircare products. the burglar is also suspected in at least four other burglaries of nearby businesses, including a veterinarian's office and a pizzeria. in both of those break-ins, the suspect is also seen crawling on all fours to burglarize the place. the biden administration is expected to announce a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 winter olympics in beijing this week. the move would allow the u.s. to send a message to china without preventing u.s. athletes from competing. u.s. lawmakers have advocated for a boycott to protest china's human rights abuses. president biden raised concerns at last month's virtual summit with chinese president xi jinping. the last full u.s. boycott of the olympics was in his monster russia's invasion of afghanistan
