stephanie ramos is live at the javits center here in new york where one of the first people who tested positive for omicron attended a massive convention. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: robin, good morning. health officials are closely following the spread of the omicron variant across the country. here in new york, dozens of people tested positive for covid after attending an event at this convention center. this morning, health officials on alert as the omicron variant spreads across the country with cases reported in at least 17 states. >> we know we have, you know, several dozen cases, and we're following them closely and we are every day hearing about more and more probable cases. so that number is likely to rise. >> reporter: 30-year-old peter mcginn from minnesota is one of those cases being monitored. he tested positive for the omicron variant. mcginn is fully vaccinated, and received a booster. he attended an anime convention in new york city in late november. after flying home, he learned

that one friend he went to the convention with tested positive for covid. >> i was just a little taken back from the fact that i had covid, and it was the new one. >> reporter: he believes he contracted the variant not at the convention itself, but events after when he and a group of about 30 people, also vaccinated, got together. now half of that group has tested positive for covid. >> i felt perfectly safe with the people that i was with, and so it never really crossed my mind to think that i had covid. so it was more like those events outside the con where i believe that the transmission took place. >> reporter: it's unclear if the omicron variant will be more severe or spread faster than the delta variant. >> we have to be careful before we make any determinations, but thus far the signals have been encouraging regarding the severity. >> reporter: but officials stress that all eligible americans roll up their sleeves and get that booster shot. in louisiana, thousands being

tested after a covid outbreak on a week-long international cruise. at least 17 confirmed cases on the norwegian breakaway. the cruise ship company is saying in a statement, in part, in addition to requiring that 100% of guests and crew are fully vaccinated, we have implemented quarantine, isolation, and contact tracing procedures. robin? >> stephanie, the new travel restrictions for international travelers coming to the u.s. are now in place this morning. tell everybody what exactly that is. >> reporter: right, robin. so starting today all air passengers with a flight departing to the u.s. from a foreign country will be required to show a negative covid test taken within 24 hours, instead of three days. off of this in an effort to slow the spread of the omicron variant. robin? >> all right, stephanie. thank you. t.j.? we turn now this arctic blast on the move. ginger tracking this for us. snow in the midwest, dangerous wind, and crashing temperatures. a lot to get to. ginger, good morning.

>> a powerful coldfront, t.j. good morning to you. look at this video out of montana. this is interstate 90, east of billings. eastbound lanes standstill. icing there up to 16 inches from montana to michigan, and we also saw dust blowing through downtown denver. gusts up to 35 miles an hour west of there. aso over the weekend, it was tornadic in parts of kentucky and tennessee as you see the video there. today, i think the people that need to be on the lookout, monroe, louisiana, jackson, mississippi. there's a severe storm threat along the coldfront. look at the numbers. george, they're going to slide. don't get away from it. that artic blast the here tomorrow. >> it is coming. ginger, thanks very much. we're going to go overseas now to growing tensions over ukraine. more than 100,000 russian troops are amassing near that border sparking fears of an invasion. president biden will talk to vladimir putin tomorrow, and mary bruce is standing by at the white house first. let's go to ian pannell who is on the scene in ukraine. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning,

george. that's right. this is one of the most serious crises since the cold war. tension over ukraine between russia and america higher than at any time since seven years ago. we're in one of the towns on the front line with the russian-backed rebel east of ukraine. there is supposed to be a peace agreement, but we have been hearing the sound of small arms fired by both sides, and today, as many as 100,000 russian combat troops are thought to be amassed on that eastern border. the u.s. fears they could be preparing for a full-scale military assault. u.s. officials have been briefing "the washington post" and others with maps claiming the kremlin is launching a multi-front offensive with more than 170,000 troops with artillery and other equipment. george? >> ian, how is the kremlin responding to the reports? >> reporter: russia's dismissing the claims, accusing the american officials of aggravating the situation, but it's also a nightmare of military confrontation. the kremlin fears the ukraine

getting too close to the west and nato. the question this morning is whether or not putin really plans to put troops across the border in this part of ukraine or whether this is just a tough negotiating tactic to try to extract concessions ahead of that crucial video summit tomorrow. george? >> ian, thanks very much. that summit is coming tomorrow. let's bring in our senior white house correspondent mary bruce. the white house is alarmed by these reports of russian troops. >> reporter: this is growing alarm here at the white house, george. the president says this is going to be a long discussion tomorrow with vladimir putin. it's their first we know of since july, and biden has said he's going to make it very, very difficult for russia to invade ukraine. but the big question is how? how far is this administration willing to go to prevent this? we know they are considering putting in place another round of harsh economic sanctions, but george, based on what we've seen in the past it's not likely that's going to be enough to deter vladimir putin. >> mary, there are tensions with china as well. they're responding to a

possible diplomatic boycott of the olympics. >> reporter: this is something the president is considering. it means the u.s. would not be sending official government representatives to the olympics, but that u.s. athletes would still be able to compete. the president is expected to make this announcement this week, and china this morning as you know is not happy about this. they are calling this an outright political provocation. they say it is completely selfish, and they're promising firm counter michig firm countermeasures, george. >> thanks. t.j.? we turn to the new accusation against now fired cnn anchor chris cuomo. another colleague at another network, not at cnn is accusing him of misconduct. erielle reshef is outside cnn head quarters in new york. erielle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. it's unclear if those accusations factored into cnn's decision to fire chris cuomo, but there was an aboutface for the network that defended him for months. >> i'm chris cuomo, and welcome to primetime.

>> reporter: this morning chris cuomo out of a job at cnn. the network firing its prime time anchor over the weekend, following his response to his brother's sexual harassment allegations. chris cuomo addressing the controversy last march. >> obviously i'm aware of what's going on with my brother. obviously i cannot cover it because he is my brother. now, of course, cnn has to cover it. they have covered it extensive i will, and they will continue to do so. i have always cared very deeply about these issues, and profoundly so. >> reporter: as news broke of his dizsmissal from cnn, cuomo treating, this is not how i

want my time at cnn to end, but i have already told you why and how i helped my brother. but now, new allegations of sexual misconduct emerging against chris cuomo from a junior staffer at another network. an attorney for the woman who also represents one of andrew cuomo's accusers saying, hearing the hypocrisy of chris cuomo's on-air words and disgusted by his efforts to try to discredit these women, my client retained a lawyer. chris cuomo's lawyer responding, if the goal in making these unvetted accusations was to see mr. cuomo punished by cnn, that may reveal his dismissal by cnn. it was revealed he used media sources to press for information on the women accusing the former new york governor. the network now saying based on the report we received regarding chris' conduct with his brother's defense, we had cause to terminate. when new allegations came to us this week, we took them seriously and saw no reason to delay taking immediate action. and the former governor now faces a federal probe by the department of justice. cnn has not yet named a robin?ement for chris cuo'me sl.

now to the disaster in indonesia. more than a dozen people dead after a volcano erupted on the country's most populated island. james longman is tracking the latest, and the fears of another eruption. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, robin. this was an enormous eruption on java island in indonesia. it sent hot ash and smoke thousands of feet up into the air, turning the sky black. people scrambling to safety any way they could, fleeing on motor scooters, as ash rained down around them. molten rock streaming down the mountainside, engulfing entire villages. people tried to escape in trucks. you can see them now almost completely submerged in ash. you can see roofs jutting out of the mud which is now thickening across the landscape. rescue efforts did have to stop briefly because of wind and rain, and there's concern the volcano may flare up again. at least 14 people were killed,

and with many missing, that number is likely to rise. more that a thousand people are now in rescue centers unsure whether their homes survived this tragedy. robin? >> tragic. thank you, james. george? we're celebrating the life of bob dole. a longtime republican leader and presidential candidate dying sunday at the age of 98. president biden ordered the flags at half-staff at the white house calling him the greatest in a great generation. an american hero, bob dole dedicated his life to his country on the battlefield and in the u.s. senate. born in 1923 in the small town of russell, kansas, dole grew up to be a star student and athlete, but in 1943, all of that was put on hold. he saw combat in world war ii, severely injured while fighting in italy. dole's body ripped apart by shrapnel and left for dead. he managed to survive and

he returned home and started a grueling recovery. >> of all the titles i have had, you know, i tried to get one i didn't get, but the one i'm most proud of is veteran. >> reporter: dole's right arm would never heal. a constant reminder of war would fuel his fight for those with disabilities. a key player in enacting the americans for disabilities act in 1990, and with his second wife, elizabeth, dole established a foundation to help care for wounded warriors. the pair were a political powerhouse. two of the most respected figures in washington. >> i may be biased as a senator and her husband, but when george bush talked about the thousand points, he probably had elizabeth in mind. >> reporter: during his at tten in congress he worked towards bipartisan on civil rights and the safety net. he was chairman of the rnc, and joined the presidential ticket with gerald ford, and then after failed runs for president, he faced off against president clinton. that race quickly turned bob dole into a pop culture staple. he made several late night

appearances poking fun at his persona. >> i don't run around saying, bob dole does this, and bob dole does that. that's not something bob dole does. [ laughter ] >> reporter: while he lost the race, he never lost his sense of humor. when president clinton awarded him the presidential medal of freedom after he lost the election, he pretended to be sworn in at the white house. >> i, robert j. dole -- [ laughter ] -- do solemnly swear. oops, sorry, wrong speech. >> reporter: overnight, tributes poured in. president biden called dole a friend whom i could look to for trusted guidance or a humorous line at just the right moment to settle frayed nerves.

the shooter behind bars facing first degree murder charges and his parents were arrested after a manhunt this weekend on charges of involuntary manslaughter. we'll talk to the lead prosecutor in just a moment, but first trevor ault is in oxford, michigan with the latest for us. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this was a weekend of wild revelations. beginning with the prosecutor filing those charges and revealing new information and evidence that she says shows these parents could have prevented this massacre and they didn't. they were arrested in the middle of the night with authorities saying they were trying to run and hide, but through all of it, this community while outraged has been trying to keep their focus on the victims, the survivors, and their families. this morning, james and jennifer crumbley and their 15-year-old son are waking up in the oakland county, michigan jail. all of them accused of having a hand in the oxford high school massacre that left four students dead. overnight, the detroit lions paying tribute to the students.

jalen elliot who shares the number 42, the same number as myre, wearing his name. both parents with four counts each of involuntary manslaughter. >> are you trying to set a standard or was the evidence simply overwhelming in this case? >> the facts of this case are so egregious. >> reporter: prosecutors say on black friday james crumbley brought his son to buy the weapon later used in the rampage. prosecutors showing these instagram posts showing the alleged shooter saying, just got my knew beauty today. jennifer crumbley writing, mom and son day, testing out his new christmas present. the day before the shooting, prosecutors say a teacher reported the suspect searching ammunition on his phone. after which jennifer crumbley tweeted, quote, lol. i'm not mad at you. you have to learn not to get caught. then the morning of the shooting prosecutors saying another

teacher showed a picture drawn by the teen featured a person appearing to be shot and disturbing phrases like, the thoughts won't stop. help me, and blood everywhere. the superintendent says the student claimed the drawing was part of a video game he was designing. the crumbleys were called to school, but they resisted taking him home. hours later, he allegedly walked out of a bathroom and started firing. >> we need medical assistance, multiple ambulances, if possible to stage at the high school. >> reporter: the alleged shooter is charged as an adult and pleaded not guilty to 24 charges including four counts of first degree murder. friday, as arrest warrants were issued for his parents, the crumbleys were nowhere to be found. located after midnight tucked away in an empty commercial building in detroit. both parents pleading not guilty to all charges. their lawyer arguing the couple never intended to flee. >> how are you pleading to count one? >> not guilty. >> reporter: james crumbley shaking his head at the prosecutor's accusations.

and the sheriff's office now says all but one of the injured students has been released from the hospital and the last student being treated is in stable condition. george? >> okay, trevor. thanks. let's bring in oakland county prosecutor karen mcdonald. prosecutor mcdonald, thank you for joining us this morning. we saw mr. crumbley shaking his head right there. why don't you lay out the case against the parents? >> good morning. it's somewhat unique to charge parents, but in this case there was such overwhelming evidence i do want to point out. these are merely allegations. they are innocent until proven guilty, and i am ethically bound only to release the facts that have already been made public and sworn to in open court. however, there is evidence to suggest they purchased that weapon for their 15-year-old, bragged about it online, thought this was some joyous occasion as

a present. and in combination with nonsocial media posts, some social media posts, the gun was his, and he had free access to it, and then the signs there -- such warning signs. the day before about the ammunition, mom's lack of concern. in fact she seems to be encouraging that behavior and then, of course, that morning with the meeting where the drawing and the notes were found, it just goes beyond any sort of mere negligence or mistake. it's criminal. >> you said the gun was stored unlocked when you announced the charges last week. their defense attorney says it was locked. are you positive it was unlocked, and would it change your case if it was indeed locked? >> he had access. so whether it was locked or not, he had access to it. securing a weapon doesn't mean just locking it if you are going to just allow a minor or

somebody you think might be dangerous free access to unlock it. so no, i'm not positive because, you know, we were -- these are just allegations, but the evidence shows at this point that he absolutely had free access to that weapon, and, in fact, it was purchased for him. >> are the parents cooperating? >> i can't make any statement about either defendant and whether or not they've made statements. i can just tell you that this is a terrible tragedy, and at some point we have to acknowledge that all of the training and all of the events that we lead to kids, teaching them to hide under desks and what to do in an active shooter situation is very important, and in this case everything was done perfectly except that four kids were still murdered and several others injured.

not to mention the hundreds of other kids who were in that school and their lives will never be the same, nor will the community. so that -- the parents are responsible, and i think that they should be held accountable. none of that would have happened if he had not had access to a handgun. >> that is clearly true, but there are also a lot of other warning signs as well. any chance the school could face charges? >> that has not been presented to our office. i -- that's an investigative process that i'll leave to law enforcement. i can tell you that there is outrage in the community. i can tell you that we all should be looking at the events that led up to that horrific event, and as a community, as a school, as a nation, talk about what could have been -- what we could have done different so that didn't happen, and in this case, a lot could have been done different.

i mean, that meeting -- he was allowed to go back to school. we know he either had that weapon with him or someplace he stored it in the school. he had it in the school, there's no question. leaving the decision to parents about whether he goes home or not --nd i want to just point out too, you can't even in an airport remotely indicates that there might be some sort of violence on a plane. you'll be immediately extracted, and yet we have a kid who is as you reported, saying some pretty concerning things, and he was allowed to go back to school, and neither parent mentioned that he had access to a weapon, and that -- that's -- it's just -- it's not just tragic. it's not just disappointing. i believe it's criminal. >> prosecutor mcdonald, thanks very much. t.j.? all right, george. we're going to turn next to one small step for man, and one giant flight suit. strahan, we'll check with him down at astronaut village

>> a lot more nervous. i'll be honest, i really -- first of all, i didn't get a good night's sleep like i got last night because i woke up here in astronaut village, well-rested, ready to go, excited about today, and i'll be heading to the training center at least for a little bit. i'll be spending the day there, and now i have to say, i've done a lot of training camp. 15 years of training camp -- well, 14 because i sat out my last one, but -- [ laughter ] this is definitely some training like no other down here. take a look at the training. this morning is my first full day of training here in van horn, texas, and it's sure to be action-packed. first step, we're putting on my customized flight suit.

>> that will have your patch right there with your name on it. >> reporter: i'm working with kevin sproge and sarah knights. they work with capsule communications with mission control. >> welcome to the astronaut training center. >> reporter: we begin at astronaut training center where i will meet my five fellow crewmates and find out for the first time our seating assignments inside the capsule. >> we have six seats in the capsule. as you walk into the hatch is seat number one, and it goes all the way around clockwise to seat six. the first time they go in the capsule for their training, their name tags and patches will be on their seats and that's where they'll see for the first time where they'll be seating. >> reporter: a few weeks ago, i met up with kevin sproge to test out my flight seat to make sure i would fit. >> this is comfortable. i'm excited. i'm ready to go. >> he's right at the upper limit of what we designed our seat for. we lucked out a little bit. michael has really long legs, but not as long a torso which helped us out. he fit in our seats.

>> reporter: then it's time to step inside and learn how to become a blue origin astronaut. >> we get them comfortable with the capsule itself and the environment that they're going to be in, talking about the systems on the capsule, and then the flight itself. what is the flight profile? what are the sounds they're going to hear? what is it going to feel like? then we start walking them through the flight. >> we'll coverall the things they can touch and see and interact with inside the crew capsule. we want them to be incredibly comfortable with every little thing even to the point where they know they're going to know exactly where each of the cameras is inside of the vehicle so they can plan out any photos that they want to take and get really ready for what that journey will look like as they go up. >> reporter: and, t.j., how can you not be excited when you see that? i know you all wish you were me right now, and the big takeaway this morning, there are no cell phones inside the capsule. i'll be honest. i was getting my selfie game ready, but now i have to learn

ramos at the javits center in new york. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: george, good morning. health officials are closely following the spread of the omicron variant across the country. and here in new york, dozens of people tested positive for covid after attending that event at this convention center, and as you mentioned, one of those people testing positive for the omicron variant, and he tells us some of his symptoms included tiredness and coughing. this morning, health officials on alert as the omicron variant spreads across the country with cases reported in at least 17 states. >> we know we have, you know, several dozen cases, and we're following them closely, and we are every day, hearing about more and more probable cases. so that number is likely to rise. >> reporter: 30-year-old peter mcginn from minnesota is one of those cases being monitored. he tested positive for the omicron variant. mcginn is fully vaccinated and received a booster.

he attended an anime convention in new york city in late november. after flying home, he learned that one friend he went to the convention with tested positive for covid. >> i was just a little taken back to the fact that i had covid and that it was the new one. >> reporter: it's unclear if the omicron variant will be more severe or spread faster than the delta variant. >> we really have to be careful before we make any determinations, but thus far the signals are a bit encouraging regarding the severity. >> reporter: but officials stress that all eligible americans roll up their sleeves and get that booster shot. meanwhile, in louisiana, thousands being tested after a covid outbreak on a week-long international cruise. at least 17 confirmed cases on the norwegian breakaway. and starting today, all air passengers with a flight departing to the u.s. from a foreign country will be required to show a negative covid test taken within 24 hours, instead

of three days before entering the u.s. all of this hoping to slow the spread of the omicron variant. robin? >> it is. okay, stephanie. thank you. now we have a new study reporting that blood pressure spiked in adults during the pandemic. even more so in women than in men, and here to explain what we need to know about high blood pressure of course, is dr. jen ashton. why are we seeing this increase? >> this is a significant study. published in the "journal of the american heart association" circulation. they looked at men and women over different points in time, and found that april to december of 2020 compared to 2019, significant increase as you said. more amongst women than men. theories right now at this point, there are a lot of them. number one, during the pandemic, increase in alcohol intake, increase in emotional stress amongst pretty much everyone. decrease in physical activity, a decrease in ongoing medical care or follow-up, and then of course, you put into the play, possible hormonal contribution and the fact that women may, in fact, manifest stress

differently from a physiologic standpoint. >> stress is so real. >> yep. >> high blood pressure, so many risk factors. heart disease, stroke, and all that. >> yep. >> what should we be looking for? what are the signs? >> i think the 411, robin on high flood pressure, you have to know the number. the cutoff is 130 over 80, and when you talk about management and screening, number one, we have to remember if you are diagnosed with hypertension and it cannot be controlled with lifestyle modification, medication is indicated and necessary. of course, we want to work on things like losing weight and controlling stress, being more active, and then lastly, robin, and this is a big one, easy to have your blood pressure checked, right? it has to be done the right way. it should be checked in both arms when you are seated and you have to use the right size cuff, if you don't use the right size and use one that's too slow, it can give you a falsely elevated

>> no pressure whatsoever. so where will it go from here? what happens? >> so i'm going to take this to the barn where your vehicle is waiting for you, and our vehicle maintenance team is going to load it. the vehicle is vertical right now, so they're going to go up about 70 feet in the air, put it in the vehicle in a special spot so that it is ready, and because it is blue, and we are all giants fans here, it is in safe hands with our vehicle team. >> reporter: i don't think it's any coincidence it's blue origin and the giants blue. you guys get it? you get it, george? >> oh. >> i got it. >> reporter: big blue. blue origin. >> it is safe with us. >> so sarah, this is michael's first day of training. what's the toughest thing he's going to do today? >> oh, tough thing today is keeping the energy and the adrenaline in check because it's classroom time. it's time to get in training, and it's the first time in your

training capsule, and first time with your crew getting ready. it's time to buckle down to do some classroom training to get ready. >> can i ask you one question? can you flunk this class? i'm just asking. >> we have such great trainers that you are going to be just fine. i feel good about it. >> we know you're in great hands, michael. sarah, congratulations, because you have a position that no one has ever had before, director of astronaut experience. so what does your job entail, sarah? >> thank you, robin. it is -- i have the best job, literally in the universe. i have this amazing job where i get to create the hospitality experience for our customer astronauts. as we were creating this experience, it was about two things. making sure it was authentically texas and authentically blue origin. we wanted to pay homage to the past pioneers of aerospace while also looking to the future for our new pioneers of commercial space tourism. >> you mentioned you create an

experience for them, but he's training. so you train hard and play hard. when they get done training, they get to go back to the village and enjoy some of the stuff you put together for them? you going to party hard? >> they do. we have a beautiful astronaut village and there is a great fire pit. >> yes. >> for us it's all about creating that crew bond. we're going to have our astronauts join us at the fire pit for some adventure and fellowship and really big crew bonding around the fire bit. >> reporter: i got in late last night, guys. there were several crew members that were up with me, staying by the fire pit, waiting for me by the fire pit just to say hello. it is second to none. sarah has done a fantastic job. >> thank you. we're thrilled to have you. >> thrilled to be here. >> michael, time to get to work right now. we'll check in with you tomorrow. we'll have live coverage of the launch on thursday morning starting at 9:30 eastern.

>> welcome back to "gma," everybody. our next guest a tony winning, oscar nominated actor films like "made in manhattan," "harry potter," you name it, and now ralph fiennes stars in "the king's man," and here he is now. ralph, it is good to have you here with us, and this movie, delay after delay after delay. i mean, you might have set the record for how many release dates you had, but here you are almost two years after the original release date. what's it like to finally be sitting here and be able to give this movie to fans?

>> i think all of us involved in the making of the film, especially the director and producer, matthew vaughn was relieved. we can't believe that tonight we'll walk on the red carpet under the heavy london skies, and we'll celebrate our film. >> well, congrats on finally getting here. what drew you to this? were you a fan of those first two films? they were so funny. >> yes, i enjoyed the first two very much, and i love matthew vaughn who created riffing i suppose on this adventure spy bond-style hero, but this is the beginning of "the king's man." it's set in the beginning of the 20th century, and the agency is born out of the trauma, and the anxiety about the first world war. so it features some historical figures. the czar of russia, the king of england, and the famous russian monk rasputin, and i play an english aristocrat, the duke of

oxford, and i brought up my son on his own, and he's a pacifist. what drew me to the script was this action adventure entertainment principle protagonist i suppose steps into the film saying, i'm -- i'm a pacifist, and he's an assertive pacifist. what's interesting is where he has to change his views in the course of the drama, and that was an enticing proposal. >> you mention some historical figures in what you're talking about in this movie, but this clip we're about to see, i asked my producer caroline what the clip was, and she said, it's a goat licking his face. let's take a look at that for a second and i'll ask you about it on the other

>> whoa. we missed the part about the goat. but do you remember shooting some of this stuff? it was so long ago, but there's a goat involved in several places in this movie. do you remember some of these? you shot it so long ago, but how much fun or how difficult was it, some of those things? >> well, it was difficult, but it was fun at the same time, and i think i was hearing a rock climbing sequence. is that what you were watching? >> that was the one. >> although i was aided with ropes, i had to do quite a bit of climbing in pretend ice and snow and i found it was -- i had to use quite a lot of strength even though there were things to help me, and -- but i loved seeing how these stunt sequences are put together. they're put together by a brilliant team of people guided by matthew vaughn and you get to see it in advance. it's all been as it were kind of like a cartoon of the fight. so you get to see these extraordinary sequences which
