it emphasizes the problem that san francisco and the bay area is facing. places where security costs are now eating into profit margins and there are questions whether they can stay open. dan: not just in the big cities. we have been talking about crime in oakland and you were at. that news phil: also the persistent wheel that gets change. two years ago it was defund the police which was the squeaky wheel. now times have changed. oakland is more open to the idea of possibly police are a positive thing to have on the streets. in part because of people's straight state safety. what to religious leaders think about having more place? bishop michael barber was blind at today's conference. he laid it out personally.

>> i was held up and gone part while walking on a sunday afternoon right outside my church in central oakland. during sunday mass, a deranged man with a knife took over the sunday service, threatened the ministers on the altar and the old ladies hid under the pews. we called the police department. they said we do not have anybody to send. how many more poor citizens have to be shot and be killed in oakland before our city council will refund the police department and give us the protection and the number of officers we need? dan: i just cant believe he told them that we have no police officers. really shocking. phil: they are so understaffed that sometimes they cannot cover the beats they have. dan: but somebody with a knife in church, come on. let's talk about that call.

as you mentioned a little while ago we were at defund the police. and now we are refund. phil: one the crime rate went up, including violent crime. it is one thing about drugs and talking about people's safety and people getting killed, especially babies being ridden along the freeway by their parents, that is when you start across the line. the second thing that happened was a change in the public. a recent poll by the chamber of commerce found that a majority of oakland voters now favor more police. wouldn't you know it, it is an election year. dan: guess what they are going to get, more place. the headlines cap piling up. more police academies. will that make a difference? phil: they are way behind and they are losing officers at the rate of 10 a month. oakland officers say i am going to go and work and work in some other public safety outside of oakland. so, you have a problem where you

are losing officers steadily. is this enough to make up for it? these academies that were voted on today aren't going to be ready for the street for another 18 months and possibly even longer before they are ready to take beats by themselves. there's a gap in between. and that is what they are grappling with. that is where the idea comes into painting bonuses. you want to pay bonuses to these cops to come here. it might be a timer to where you say thank you for the job. that might make them feel better because right now those cops are feeling left out of the mix. dan: they are. >> in the south bay, prosecutors in the theranos grilled elizabeth about documents. the trial is down to holme's credibility. >> one of the most important revelations revolved around asking elizabeth holds simple

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. ama: scientists are reporting that traces of the omicron variant have been found in the wastewater multiple cities across the state. we spoke to researchers who detected a sample with what looks like omicron in the bay area. >> the next covid-19 outbreak or new variant could be first detected in our wastewater. >> even if a person doesn't even know they are infected or has not gone to get tested in a laboratory, we can detect the signal from their infection in the wastewater. >> for the past 14 months, this team at u.c. berkeley has been monitoring the genetic material of covid-19 in wastewater. they are getting their samples

war ii book club decided to do something to honor mitchell. they created a plaque with his story and raised a new flag in honor of the 80th anniversary of pearl harbor. >> i was just lucky to have somebody like that around. i think he is smiling in heaven. ama: he says he wants mitchell's dedication to serving others to be passed on to future generations. dan: happening tonight, the alameda city council is considering safety improvements to its streets. one of the intersections is the one where supervisor -- wilma chan was hit and killed less month. melanie woodrow has more on what officials have since discovered could be improved. >> prior to the untimely death of supervisor wilma chan, transportation officials had identified shoreline drive at ranch read as a high injury intersection. based on the number and severity of accidents between 2009 and 2018. last month, alameda police say a

driver hit and killed chan at the intersection while she was walking her dog. they said they believed chan was crossing shoreline drive and the driver was driving east on shoreline from sky 7 the abc7 news team observed a u.s. postal service truck blow through the stop sign. the intersection was part of an action plan. in 2015, and limited at a parking protected biplanes -- bike planes. after chan's death, staff and public works and the city managers and the police department meant to look at the intersection. the senior transportation coordinator lisa foster said they found room for more improvements. >> it doesn't have the kind of crosswalk marking that is the most physical -- the most physical. that is one place we can improve the intersection. we also are looking at a slight configuration -- reconfiguration of the road to eliminate a left turn pocket and align the street
