some supporting more officers, others questioning whether that is the answer or if resources need to be better spent on preventing crime. in the end, the council voted to hold two additional police academy classes. >> come out to the streets, and that is not something that we want to see as a community, city. >> the department currently has 61 vacancies. it will be months before these future academies swear and about 60 new officers. we told you about another offer on the table to recruit officers which calls for $50,000 bonuses for officers already on the job at another agency but the site to come over to oakland. the council decided to table that topic for now.

it will be considered later this month. the council is trying to address the violence in oakland where there have been 129 murders this year. kumasi: thank you. soon, you could see sheriff's deputies providing security at stores in san francisco. reggie: deputy shares are allowed to work overtime at no cost to taxpayers. this is due to a recent spike in organized retail theft. >> we think it will provide one additional spoke in the wheel of justice to deal what is plaguing our city right now. reggie: the police chief says the department was unable to meet the demand payment the overtime is on a voluntary basis and will not impact staffing levels. both apartments have 60 days to come up with a way to fill security staffing. kumasi: alameda county me will hold a ceremony to honor manila

at a most area about instagram's impact about the mental health of teenagers. it comes months after a facebook employee testified before the same senate committee, telling lawmakers the company's own research shows apps like instagram can promote to emotional problems among teens. the company pushed back against that claim, saying it is not accurate that leaked internal research demonstrates that instagram is toxic for teenage girls. meanwhile, new parental controls coming to the platform for the first time will allow parents to set limits baby >> we need to give our kids limits. we need to know what they are doing, how they are using social media, and developing a healthier relationship with it. >> parents can also be notified if their child reports on two instagram, but critics say the

indicates the covid-19 omicron variant appears to be less severe than the delta variant. reggie: health experts warned omicron may spread faster. it comes as the bonded administration faces an obstacle to its covid strategy. jobina: as omicron spreads across the country, cases have been confirmed in 20 states, but this morning, promising news from the world health organization. preliminary data does not indicate omicron is more severe than the delta variant. while that may be highly transmissible, it appears to lead to less severe illness. >> we must remember these are still in the form of anecdotal -- but hopefully in the next few weeks we will get a clearer picture -- but it appears with the cases that are seen, we are not seeing a very severe profile of disease. jobina: the biden administration is facing another blow to its covid response strategy. a federal judge in georgia

blocked its vaccine mandate for federal contractors. all three of president biden's vaccine mandates have been put on hold by courts. more legal challenges are expected to come. reggie: salesforce has launched dream pass, a playbook to help bring back more safe in person events. it comes before dream force in new york city. dream pass collects and verifies the covid-19 vaccine status of attendees. everyone has to provide proof of vaccination and two negative tests before going to the event. out of 18,000 tests, only only not authorized to attend. salesforce hosted more than 1000 people in september in san francisco. coming up a live interview with their chief medical officer about dream pass. kumasi: the city council voted unanimously to extend its

outdoor dining program. restaurants can serve customers outdoor on private property through next december. businesses that use space on public streets can offer services through june. the city is exploring ways to make the program permanent. a joint study between dominican university and marin county public health says in person learning may be safer than thought for everybody. researchers tracked attendance at 77 schools from september 2020 through january. the data showed community spread decreased during regular school and then spiked over holiday breaks when families were mixing. >> our hope is when we experience another pandemic, that we do not have the long, protracted delays for the return of in person instruction. it adversely affected so many children and families to be out of school so long. kumasi: the authors of the study hope the findings can comfort

parents that safetyroco like masking and good hygiene can make in person learning safe. reggie: oakland unified students no longer have to worry about failing a class. the administration is phasing out d and f grades. >> what a fun topic with the kids at breakfast. student in oakland will no longer be able to receive a d or f in school. if a student fails a test or does not turn in homework, they will have a chance to retake the test or more time to complete the assignment. oakland is responding to the impact of the pandemic, with officials saying they want to help students reengage in school after distance-learning. the hope is that this will help them learn the material, rather than do you real their future with bad grades. this is a big shift in how to assist students.

supervisors meeting since the story aired, the chairperson introduced a former district court judge. he is now heading an independent investigation into what happened. the board also voted to create a committee to monitor the progress of this probe. results are expected to made public the end of march. kumasi: a family in the south bay hopes a christmas tree can bring awareness and justice in an unsolved murder. san jose's christmas in the park includes community decorating trees, honoring those who are no longer with us. that includes matthew should be rough, who was shot and killed leaving a charity event in march. his family held a memorial at this tree last night. his murder is still unsolved. >> i just remember coming to christmas in the park with him two years ago. i am never going to give up on finding out who did this to him. kumasi:
