[ laughter ] illegal, i think. it was a long week and a fun show. tough on a tuesday night because i have to go to the work in the morning. my wife and i are at the party, go to bed around 1:00. at 2:00, one of the smoke detectors in our house start beeping. it's not the fire beep, it's the change the battery beep. i had to go all around the house, listening, to figure out which one it was. in my underpants the whole time. can someone please figure out a smoke detector that doesn't beep to let you know the battery is low after 10:00 at night? is that so difficult? [ cheers and applause ] i am so much more likely to die on a ladder at 3:00 a.m. than i am in a fire. one of the ways this omicron variant made its way across the country. the cdc is recommending that 53,000 people who attended an anime convention in new york last month get tested. because they may have been exposed to omicron. this event, basically it was comic-con for omicron. [ laughter ] 15 people tested positive for covid. none of them were women. of course. it was an anime convention. [ laughter ] omicron has now been confirmed in 20 states, including florida. florida yesterday reported their first case of omicron. and omicron reported its first case of florida. [ laughter ] but rest assured, governor omicron desantis will do everything he can to make sure as many floridians get infected as possible. [ cheers and applause ] there was some malicious holiday mischief outside the fox news building in new york this morning. midnight last night. the fox news christmas tree was engulfed in flames. the fire is believed to have

started after fox news' pants caught on fire. [ laughter ] the fire is believed to have started because judge jeanine piro ate one too many rum balls and breathed on a cigarette. [ rim shot ] thank you. [ applause ] even though lighting trees on fire is very much in line with fox's position on climate change, the hosts of their morning show were very upset today. >> somebody climbed up in the tree and lit it on fire. it's beginning to look a lot like arson. >> who sets a christmas tree on fire? >> no city is safe no person is safe, from the subway on down. it's beginning to look a lot like arson. you know that one guy with a lighter is not going to stop us. >> nope, you can't burn us down. wear going to rebuild it. >> absolutely. >> we're going to rebuild it, we're going to build it back better. company in massachusetts baked what they claim is the world's biggest-ever pot brownie. this is the brownie, it's full of pot, and the chefs who made it. gee, i wonder which one of them taste-tested this brownie? [ laughter ] christmas is now less than three weeks away. this is that magical time of year when the hallmark channel answers the question, "how many movies with the word 'christmas' in the title can we make?" the answer is a lot. [ laughter ] have you seen these hallmark holiday movies? every year, hallmark puts out a slew of these festive films. and they're popular. so i wanted to get in on the action. so i set up a meeting to pitch some ideas to the real hallmark executives who decide which of these movies get the green light. here's how that went.

weekend, thanksgiving. it was a saturday morning. very early morning. and i fell down a step. one step. i rolled my ankle. and i felt pain like i had never felt before. and i collapsed onto the ground. and i was dry heaving because i was -- i was almost ready to throw up. but i was also laughing because it was really funny. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: really? >> yes. but after about 15 minutes, no one else was awake so i was trying to hold down my screams. [ laughter ] also my vomit. eventually, 15 minutes later, i got up. and i was like, all good, i can put a little weight on it, i'm going to shake it off. >> jimmy: uh-huh? > turns out you can't shake off mild to severe damaged and torn ligament. >> jimmy: you can't? what? >> no, but i tried. i talked to my wife, kaitlin. >> jimmy: what did she recommend? [ cheers ] >> yep, yep. she said, you have to go to the hospital. no, i'm going to shake it off. i talked to my mother-in-law,

who is a retired e.r. nurse. she said, you have to go to the hospital. no, i'm going to shake it off. [ laughter ] i call my dad. want to take a guess what my dad says? >> jimmy: shake it off? >> shake it off. >> jimmy: rub a little dirt on it. [ applause ] >> yeah. so i -- i shake it off. you know. [ laughter ] and i go to bed that night. and i wake up the next morning. and my foot looks like a ham. [ laughter ] like a christmas ham. i turn to kaitlin and i said, i think i have to go to the hospital. and she's like, yeah! we go to the hospital. my whole thought was, oh, the hospital's busy, packed, i don't want to bother them. i get there and it's empty. sunday morning, the e.r. is empty. this is the middle of los angeles. i'm like, it's a holiday weekend, is it always this empty? the nurse said, don't worry, it will be packed this afternoon and tonight. >> jimmy: really? >> and i was like, why?

do crazy things happen on sundays of holiday weekends? she said, no, they do them on friday and saturday and saturday night. and they shake it off. [ laughter ] and then they come into the hospital. an hour later, it will be packed. [ applause ] >> jimmy: how much longer are you going to have to have that thing on? >> i don't know. >> jimmy: yeah. >> i don't know but it's not that bad, i get to move around. >> jimmy: they could make those better looking, those boots, right? it's like they're trying to humiliate you on top of you being injured. >> i think they're going for the science. >> jimmy: i see. >> before they go for the aesthetic. i will say it actually is fairly comfortable. >> jimmy: well, yeah, it better be, because it doesn't look good. [ laughter ] >> many people definitely thought i was lying. but you know who it was really hard for? steven. he has to be the greatest secret-keeper of all-time. he's in the editing room making this thing, every day he knows what he has. he's just like, cool, cool, cool -- nah, let's wait. nah, let's wait. what? >> jimmy: you think this was harder for him than you? >> of course it was hard for us. i mean -- it's a film made with such joy and love. and quite frankly, that's what we all need right about now. literally, after every musical number, clapping. whoo! i was like, well, this is great. it feels like broadway came to the cinema, in a way. it's really lovely. >> jimmy: you met steven spielberg backstage at "hamilton" when you were in the cast? >> yeah, i'm an original company member of "hamilton." [ cheers and applause ] he was signing the wall. there's a wall. well, it was chris jackson's dressing room. you know, here comes the general. he wrote, "this is history." steven spielberg. and he -- >> jimmy: i wrote "wassap?" >> i saw that too. >> jimmy: actually, they asked me not to sign the wall. "just keep walking through." >> steven walked down the stairs and i said, "sir, thank you for coming to our little skit." and he said, "skit, that's good." we just had a very brief

conversation. later on making the movie he was like, i remember meeting you. i said, i don't know how, it was in passing. he said, no, i had a thought, i think i'm going to make something with her. i thought, that is wild, and esp. [ cheers ] >> jimmy: that's the same thing he said to e.t., did you know that? [ laughter ] a great director, a very good actor. >> jimmy: do you think he wasn't telling the truth? i bet he was telling the truth. >> i don't think he has the power to be disingenuous. he's a really good man. >> jimmy: that is something else, that he saw you, then he met you, then he said, yeah, i'm going to tuck that away. then the next thing you know, you're in this movie that people are saying, first of all, the reviews are phenomenal for the movie. the reviews for you are phenomenal. people are saying you'll get an oscar nomination and all of this stuff. get here? >> jimmy: yeah. >> i know exactly how i got here, but it's just so -- so thrilling. we worked so hard for so long on something we really loved. and to be able to give it to the world and have it received positively. because sometimes you work really hard and it's not received positively. [ laughter ] but also we got to make the movie with rita moreno. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: which is unbelievable. she played anita, she won the oscar for her performance in that role. >> she did. >> jimmy: at our house growing up, i had -- i think we had like six or seven albums. that was it. >> right. >> jimmy: "west side story" was one of them. it's kind of sacred to a lot of people, this thing. and so rita's opinion of your performance must have been very important to you, i would think? >> yeah. i mean -- i'm -- >> jimmy: no, it was not? >> no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. [ laughter ] i'm always a little nervous when it comes to rita. i'm nervous when it comes to gina rivera. she played the role on broadway. these are really large shoes to fill, you know? it is an award-winning role.

and it's a role that means a lot to the broadway community. and having worked on broadway for ten years, that's important to me. it's a role that means a lot to latinos. [ cheers and applause ] and i just -- as a latina, i'm really proud that i'm able to do this because this is the thing rita gave me. she let me see that i had possibility. there was the possibility of my success. because she sort of looked like me. she was the closest thing i could find in movie musicals, to be perfectly honest. now i get to be the lady in the yellow dress with the red skirt for some young afro latina, for some young girl who looks like me.
