unvaccinated pregnant women. >> more on covid in a moment. first, news from washington, concerning the president's vaccine mandate. this morning, senators on both sides of the aisle taking a stand against president biden's vaccine mandate for private businesses. two democrats, joe manchin and jon tester, crossing party lines, voting with republicans to repeal the vaccine or test mandate for businesses with more than 100 employees. manchin says he supports a mandate for federal employees. but saying it's not the place of the federal government to private businesses. >> we sent a clear message on behalf of the people, this mandate needs to be stopped. >> some of the anti-vaxers here in this chamber remind me of what happened 400 years ago, when people were clinging to the fact that the sun revolved around the earth. >> reporter: even if the house joins the senate in overturning the mandate, the white house

says president biden will use his veto power to keep the mandate in place. covid cases are up 83% nationwide since october. the governors of maine and new hampshire activating the overwhelmed hospitals. - in massachusetts, one hospital is at 120% capacity. >> you look at the top five states for covid deaths right now, they are generally hovering around a 50% vaccination rate. i expect that we will see substantial differences in the size of holiday surges here this winter, based around proportion of patients who are vaccinated. >> reporter: hospitals stress most new patients are unvaccinated. the delta variant is driving the surge. early data shows that omicron may be more transmisible but is less severe. and while the pfizer study indicates, omicron chips away at vaccine effectiveness, data shows a booster shot offers

protection. the british government is advising people to work from home, due to evidence that omicron cases could double in the coming days. anger is spreading in the u.k., after a leaked video showed members of the prime minister's staff joking about holding a christmas party during lockdown last year. a senior aide in that video broke down in tears as she resigned wednesday. >> my remarks seemed to make light of the rules. i will regret those remarks for the rest of my days. >> the coronavirus attacks fat tiss tissue. that could explain why overweight people are at higher risk. american workers are quitting their jobs in new record numbers. new figures show 4 million americans quit their jobs in october alone. and there were 11 million job openings as companies struggled to attract workers. we turn to the historic tribute in washington today, for bob dole, the long-time senate leader and war hero. dole will lie in state at the

"the new york times" reporting the elizabeth dole foundation cut ties with the event planner working on dole's funeral, after it came to light he was
