>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. reporter: doctors are about a triple threat this holiday season. delta variant, the omicron variant and the flu at the same time. it is not common yet, bay area doctors are concerned it could be by christmas. reporter: doctors at ucsf say not only is it possible we could contract multiple strains of covid and the flu at the same time, but the illness is often more severe with stronger,

longer lasting side effects. researchers are studying how common this is. in the same hospital where the first u.s. case of the omicron variant was detected, researchers are working to answer this. >> is the impact of multiple infections all at once. reporter: a triple threat of infections. >> there's nothing stopping a person from being influenza plus omicron plus delta. the interaction may make people sicker. >> i hope it doesn't happen in large numbers. reporter: he is a ucsf pulmonologist. he says while it is possible to contract all three, the more likely scenario is being infected with at least one covid variant and the flu. what happens if patients get diagnosed with both covid and flu? >> the symptoms could be more severe and might occur more rapidly. the patients might become sicker

more rapidly. reporter: since both viruses can cause serious illness, combined, he says patients may experience more severe symptoms of cold, sore throat, fever and respiratory issues. if untreated, the two viruses could lead to faculty breathing or pneumonia faster. how can people tell if they have covid and the flu? >> it is hard to distinguish the two by symptoms. they can be overlapping, very similar. they need to see a physician. too hard to do this at home. reporter: the cdc is working to determine how hard it is to contract multiple infections at once. experts caution the chances may be more likely than we think. >> that could occur. we will know more in another month. there's enough people for not vaccinated for flu or covid. reporter: from around thanksgiving to early december,

the rolling average of daily cases in the bay area has increased from the mid-500s to the high 800s. doctors tell us this signals we could be entering the early stages of a winter surge. it is too soon to be sure, it is a clear sign to get that booster shot if you haven't already. dan, i hope you've got yours. dan: i did about a month or five weeks ago. teenagers as young as 16 years old are now eligible to receive the pfizer booster. this comes after the cdc and fda both signed off on the extra dose for 16 and 17-year-olds. that means those teens can begin receiving their booster shots, as long as it has been six months since her second shot. pfizer is currently the only vaccine authorized for people under the age of 18. vaccine has been authorized for children as young as five. up until today, boosters were only available for adults. ama: in the south bay, santa

clara health officials began administering the first booster shots to 16 and 17-year-olds today. comes is that county is at nearly 80% vaccination rate. one criteria for officials to consider removing the indoor mass mandate. as we explained, looming threats of variance or making things difficult. reporter: despite omicron nominating headlines of late, some good news in the south bay, santa clara county is reporting 79% vaccination rate and is on track to reach 80% countywide soon. >> we are encouraged. we note mr what variant we are looking at, having been vaccinated and now boosted, we are going to protect reporter: ourselves more. reporter:the protection is important. 80% vaccination rate has another meaning. it is one criteria needed to lift the indoor mask mandate. reaching the cdc moderate transmission yellow tear and low and moderate hospitalization

rates are the other two. >> right now we are not anywhere near lifting it. this is not the time to be removing the mask. it is the time to encourage people to wear the mask. reporter: we are in a situation ucsf's dr. relates to walking -- walking a tight rope. the known threat of delta and the uncertainty of omicron are leading officials to keep mandates in place. >> we know delta is around, we understand it, we don't understand enough about omicron yet. increasing cases and the spread rapidly around the world. there is uncertainty. uncertainty is driving this. reporter: last year, the holiday season brought the biggest spike in covid cases. today, the county is seeing high -- low hospitalization rates but high transmission. >> we want to remind people to

be vigilant, continue doing the same things. dan: marin county remains one of the few click -- places in california not requiring masks and doors. health officials say they will be focused on a different metric to determine whether that changes. the focus will not be on hospitalizations, not case rates. >> we set would be based on hospitalizations. five people in the hospital per 100,000 residents, those 13 people total in marin. that would be the criteria for re-imposing the mask mandate. dan: as of yesterday, there were only two people in the hospital in marin county. he says 80 to 90% -- 80% to 90% of people going to the grocery store are wearing a mask even without a mandate. 80% of marin county residents are fully vaccinated. ama: police in marin county are investigating threats against two businesses that routinely

ask for proven business -- proof of vaccination. work threatened with arson. reporter: david wilson is unlocking the door enforce knowles, a longtime family on bar has been closed since friday when a man wearing >> a ski mask walked in. > the person open the door and stepped in and through a note down. reporter: the handwritten note said if the vaccine passport is removed by this time next week, this place will burn. >> a couple people chase the person and couldn't catch up with him. he was pretty young and moved quick. reporter: the man got away, the sheriff's department was closed. -- called. >> you're going to get a few people that don't like it. nobody has gotten weird like this. it is sad that somebody would come to the bar and threatened

to burn the bar down. reporter: the following night, this jim got a similar threat. a note left after closing time on the door body kinetic said if the vaccine mandate is not listed within one week, this place burns. the handwriting on both notes appear to be similar. >> we don't know the origin of the individual or how they are related to the gym. we are working to identify the individual. the note itself is going to be sent to the lab for forensics. reporter: police are checking surveillance footage. gaia members are concerned. --gym members are concerned. >> that is not the way to go about it, especially when you're threatening a business like this that is trying to survive and do their best. reporter: police and the sheriff's department are working to see if the threats are related. they will keep checking the

organized retail theft. >> kevin nishida was off -- honored today. abc 7 news reporter was there and has a report a loss has been felt across the bay area. >> law enforcement from multiple bay area agencies showed up as part of the procession that led to the service held for kevin nishita. the memorial at the civic auditorium was both a reflection of his years of public service and his buddhist faith. >> the outpouring of love and support, it means so much. kevin is so grateful for everyone being here today. reporter: he was tragically shot in oakland less than a month. his killer has not been found. there's no more than $38,000 that beat rewarded for information leading to an

arrest. today's memorial was to honor his life. things have been rough for him and his family the last three years, he lost his older sister and mother, father and brother before that. through it all, famines -- friends and family say he never lost his spirit. >> he was carrying, courageous, reliable, polite. >> kevin love his family, friends, coworkers. reporter: his legacy will be remembered long after today. >> i will forever love you. reporter: in a collective statement, his family think -- thanks the agencies and the community for their contributions, donations and help as they continue to process this tragedy. dan: after 20 five years, sheriff's deputies and east bay say they finally solved a cold case. now, murder charges a been followed in the death of a woman

tucked inside the shirt. at that moment, i panicked. i turned around, i screamed for help. i yelled and ran onto the street. my wife was trying to save me five pulling on his pants. reporter: raymond was pistol whipped in his $30,000 rolex ripped from his wrist. law enforcement sources from different parts of the bay area tell me there have been an increase in watch robberies. one day earlier, a man who only wants to be identified as john had his lovato stolen outside the cheesecake factory. >> i was blindsided by two men behind me. one put banned chokehold. -- one put me in a choke and threw me on the ground. reporter: this couple from indonesia was robbed of a $100,000 timepiece in san francisco in october. raymond once his story to prompt

from our sacramento sister station. reporter: it is certainly brisk here in the sierra this evening. a beautiful snow-covered mountainside. you can see evidence of it with the trees covered in snow behind me. as eight inches fell in this area. folks are certainly very excited about it. folks here are hoping the snow will bring more than excitement, they hope it will bring people. >> i came to visit my daughter and son-in-law with their three puppies. reporter: it's been 14 years since his florida resident has seen snow. his bay area family are making their way to tahoe for weekend getaway just in time for the cold stuff. >> this is exciting for me. reporter: many places in the lake tahoe area, like truckee, rely on tourism to fuel their economy. >> it infected us with not as much visitors as usual.
