bay area. our sense of security has been shattered lately, with videos like these. crowds of thieves running into stores and running out with all kinds of stolen goods. now, after a show of force from police, there has been a decrease in retail theft. ama: ryan curry spoke with san francisco's police chief about how long they plan to keep officers reporter: in union square. reporter:reporter: if you're planning on heading out to union square, you will likely be stranded by police. >> i did nice a place presence, i felt comfortable being out about last night. >> sfpd increase the number of officers. >> making people feel it is ok to come to union square to shop. it is really important. >> the chief says so far it is working. increased patrol his lead to crime being significantly reduced. his is all crime in that area is

down nearly 85%. >> we see a significant drop in crime overall. from theft to cars being broken into two burglaries. >> however, the new patrol union square is putting a strain on the department. the police chief says may officers are working overtime. he says that is costing a lot of money. >> 8000 plus hours of overtime. reporter: the current patrol plans and traffic restrictions will stay in place through the shopping season and possibly longer. chief scott says his department has nearly 500 more officers the norm -- fewer officers than normal. he says the best way to continue the force of this magnitude is to hire more officers. >> you can do that when you have the right amount of officers. we are close to 500 officers short. that number continues to increase. you can't do it. reporter: he says it is an issue he is working with the city to fix.

dan: hotels near union certainly happy to see the extra police. compared to this time lester, the hotel occupancy rate is up significantly. reporter: during this holiday season, there are signs everywhere that the hotel industry near union square is coming back. >> it is really exciting. it is feeling busy, a bit like normal back here on union square. i can't believe it. it has been a long 18 months. reporter: kevin carroll of the hotel council says while the hotels are not fully booked, the increase in occupancies having an impact on jobs in the local economy. >> are in have been out of work, many of them for over a year and a half. they're starting to come back, when more people travel and come here, people stay in our hotels, they are spending money outside the hotels. reporter: occurring to the hotel council, prior to the pandemic,

the hotel occupancy rate during the holidays is close to 85%. today they say they are nowhere near those numbers, yet they remain optimistic. today that number is in the 40% range. >> 40% is much higher than we were at last of -- last december. we are seeing increases in occupancy is more people are getting out. more people want to have experiences struck the city. reporter: the heavy police presence is reassuring to the hotels, guests and employees. the hotel industry hopes that won't go away once the holidays are over. >> we continually push for more presence -- more police presence to be out here. reporter: hotels hope in the upcoming months, the travel forecast improves as international travel begins to pick up. ama: to the to the to the to th pandemic. alameda county has tightened its

mass schools, eliminating the exception -- mask rules, eliminating the exception for james. today, the cdc recommended teenagers get booster shots. the goal is to reduce the threat from the omicron variant. cases have been found in half of all u.s. states. health officials warned we are on the cost of an omicron surge. doctors fear the highly contagious delta and omicron variant circulating with the flu will pose a triple threat. our news reporter is a member of our vaccine team. she joins us live in the newsroom to reporter: break down what we can expect. reporter:doctors at ucsf say not only is it possible we could contract multiple strains of covid and the flu at the same time, but the illness is more severe, with stronger, longer lasting side effects. researchers are studying how common this is. in the same hospital where the first u.s. case of the omicron

variant was detected, researchers are working to answer this. >> is the impact of multiple infections all once. reporter: a triple threat of infections, omicron, delta and the flu. >> there's nothing stopping a person from getting influenza plus omicron plus delta. that interaction may make people sick or. >> i hope it doesn't happen in high numbers. reporter: dr. michael mate is a pulmonologist and senior critical care specialist. he says while it is possible to contract all three, the more likely scenario is being infected with at least one covid variant and the flu. what happens if patients get diagnosed with covid and the flu? >> the symptoms could be more severe and might occur more rapidly. the patients might become sicker, more rapidly. reporter: since both viruses can cause serious illness, combined, he says patients may experience more severe symptoms of a cold,

fever, sore throat and upper respiratory issues. if untreated, the two viruses could lead to difficulty breathing or pneumonia. how can people tell they have covid in the flu, given the symptoms are so similar? >> it is hard to distinguish the two by symptoms. they can be overlapping. they really need to see a physician. too hard to do this at home. reporter: the cdc is working to determine how common it is to contract multiple infections at once. experts cautioned the chances may be more likely than we think. >> that could well occur. we will know more in another month, i am afraid. there's enough people who are not vaccinated for flu or covid. reporter: cases are going up. since thanksgiving, the rolling average of daily covid cases in the bay area has increased from the mid 500s to the high 800s. doctors telling us the signals we could be entering the early

dan: a very moving show of love and support for kevin nishita, the former police officer killed last month while working security with the tv news crew in oakland. today, friends, and family members paid their respects during an emotional service at this hit san jose at civic of the taurean. >> the level of love and support, it means so much to us. dan: law enforcement colleagues pay tribute to kevin, describing him as a caring, reliable and polite man. while a friend describes kevin as a man who dearly loved his family, friends and coworkers. police are still searching for suspect in the case. there is a $38,000 reward being offered for information leading to an arrest.

ama: one day after scott peterson was sentenced to life in prison, -- resentenced to life in prison, his sister speaking out. she strongly believes he is guilty of murdering his wife and son nearly 20 years ago. our news reporter has the story to women close to peterson with two different opinions about his guilt or innocence. >> scott still appears to be vacant and emotionless. even with the mask on, reporter: one day after convicted murderer scott peterson was resentenced, his half-sister says she still has no doubts that he is guilty of killing his pregnant wife laci on christmas eve, 20 28 -- 2002. >> the behavior i wit i not that of a grieving husband or father to be. it was that of a roving bachelor.

bridge, see it drop into the 40's already. 48 in santa rosa, 48 in fairfield. 54 -- napa bridge, these are forecast features. it will be called the next two mornings, with some areas of frost. atmospheric -- atmospheric river arrives this weekend. possibly a mix of some snow with rain on tuesday. overnight, mainly clear, a few high clouds of pass by. enough to keep you from getting really cold. did i mention it is going to be cold? to give you an idea of how cold it is going to be a present -- freeze warning will be affect from 1:00 to 9:00 for which of lake and mendocino county and frost advisory for 2:00 to 10:00 for solano county. low temperatures in the freeze warning area may drop as low as 27 degrees overnight. for much of the area, low temperatures will reach into the

mid-30's. upper 30's to low 40's 40's near the bay and coast. tomorrow, under sunny skies, with chilly conditions again, i temperatures only 54 57 degrees across the entire region. let's look at the arrival of that much talked about atmospheric river. forecast for saturday afternoon at 4:00, rain will arrive saturday night into sunday morning for much of the bay area. we'll continue with moderate to heavy rain falls, occasional dump -- downpours, strong gusty winds, stone the sierra. that will continue into tuesday. expect rainfall totals over the three bait -- three day. ranging from over three inches to over six inches. it is likely to be a good soaking for us. in the sierra, winter storm watch affect from 10:00 sunday 2:10 -- 10:00 saturday 2:10

tuesday. you're talking maybe up to seven inches. that is a lot of snow. as a seven-day forecast, two cold warnings coming our way. late saturday, we will see clouds enter the picture is atmospheric river begins to push it the rainfall our way. for sunday and monday, a level two storm intensity down to level 1 on tuesday, we may see a mix of rain and snow, more than likely wednesday and thursday. ama: lots of rain coming our way. look at the new laws taking effect in the new year, we will have you taking a closer look at what you toss out. our reporter looks at the new law that could make a big difference for the environment and how you get ready. reporter: starting in january, there's no more tossing food scraps like banana peels or veggies in the trash, californians will be required to put excess food and waste bins. >> this is the biggest change to

our trash since we started recycling in the 1980's. reporter: cities and counties will turn the waste into compost. >> every time you put that banana peel in organic waste, it is turned into compost or biogas and gets its next life, we are fighting climate change. reporter: the director of cal recycle says it is about removing food waste from landfills which can damage the atmosphere as it decays. she says is the single fastest thing every californian can do on their end. >> if the average household diverted their organic waste, it would be like taking their car off the road for a year. reporter: uc davis professor of food science and technology says the change might be difficult. >> for people to meet the requirements of the law is going to be quite a transition. reporter: cities and counties will be expected to have food recycling programs in place. countertop containers are an option to hold scraps for a few days before taking them outside. >> helps with water

solutions. this is abc7 news. dan: we've been report about a widespread scam using zelle to steal from bank of america customers. now criminals are targeting customers of other banks as well tricking them into sending them money through zelle. anacreon banks say it's the victim's responsibility. a long-time chase bank customer tells his story. >> this viewer wanted to expose what's going on after he got build by imposter terse claiming to be with chase bank. these crooks say they're helping you stop a fraud when in reality they're the ones stealing your money. >> holy smokes. no way >> this person told me that someone was trying to scam me. >> so this is happening to many people. >> appeared as though it was a text message from bank of america asking me if i was

trying to transfer $3500. >> i said no. and within 15 seconds my phone rang. >> he said, ok. we're going to get you that $3500 back. you're going to go to zelle and you're going to send it to yourself. >> they were all target of the same scam, all believe they were reversing a fraudulent transaction all before sending money strait of the imposters. >> $3, 5800 was gone right then and there. >> it was an eye opener. >> and all were customers of bank of america until now. >> it says chase bank. fraud alert. zelle payment in the amount of $2,000. it was friday night when donald got the frightening text. >> if you say yes, i said no. and my phone rang. and it was brian from chase banb fraud department. >> caller id number was idol the one in the bank of my chase

card. >> but the caller id was fake. he goes, let's go over these charges. >> he said we need to send the money back to yourself. >> imposter told him to transfer the money with zelle using his own phone number. it seemed like it was going back to donald. it wasn't. >> i was getting notification that is i had sent myself money. >> tim posters snatched the money at that time other end. >> i sent out $7,000 over a matter of several transactions >> when one transaction went awry, the scammers got angry. >> and hung up. i went wow, i have been scammed. >> it was the same con that hit bva customers and like b of a, chase denied their claim. >> basically their answer was if

it's on zelle shame on you. >> but chase said he authorized those payments. and they offer nod protection. there are's no protection there's no charge back there's no not guilty. and they know the account number it wept to. >> chase' denial letter saying "as we discussed and agreed, no action will be taken." >> there was no discussion. and there was agreement. and the next line is, this inquiry is now resolved. >> b of a has refunded some victims of the zelle scam. chase bank offered a warning that the bankers will never ask you to send money with zelle. >> tricky. you think you're sending it back to yourself. thanks, michael. anchor: police are investigate serious threats made against two businesses which routine syli ask for vaccination.

in downtown san rafael got a similar threat. a note left after closing time ton door said if the vaccine mandate isn't lifted one one week, this place burns. side by side, the handwriting on both notice appear to be similar. >> we really don't know the origin of the individual or how they're related to the gym if they are related to the gym. but we are trying to work on identifying the individual the note itself is going to be sent out to the lab for forensics. >> gym members are concerned. >> er understand people get frustrated. you know, obviously, it's been a crazy year and a half like you were saying but that's not right way to go at things, period, especially when you're threatening a good business like this that's trying to survive and do their best >> police and the sheriff's department are working together to see if the threats are related. the wilson family will keep checking the vaccine status of customers.

reporter annie gause spoke with san francisco city trustee thiia about why she's running. >> some of your opponents have high name recognition in this city. how you do plan to distinguish yourself from the pack and -- and let voters know what makes you different? how do you plan to really shine in this race? >> well, to state the obvious, i'm the only woman in the race and the only parent. i think that gives me a distinct experience -- life experiences, real world experiences of living and raise ago working family here in -- in san francisco and i think that resonates with the voters. being a woman in politics, i think it taken a little something extra sometimes to throw your hat in the ring. i think that's one of the reasons why women don't throw
