companies that wrote a letter to congress, in response to the uptick in thefts happening in stores and they are asking congress to require people who are selling goods online to use their real name, not a screen name and provide other information to make sure they are legitimate. >> they would simply have to provide some very basic business information. name, phone number, a tax id. things they have to provide, anyway. >> the biggest online marketplace is amazon. a spokesperson for that company tells us amazon does not allow third-party sellers to list stolen goods in our store. we work closely with law enforcement, retailers and brands to stop bad actors and hold them accountable. amazon sellers must interview with them. either in person or in video chat, before being allowed to sell. the hope is congress will act on this in the early months of the new year, so they can put a stop

to all of this theft and help customers and employees feel safe inside the stores and help these companies stop losing so much money. live in the east bay, amy holyfield. reggie: abc 7 have the opportunity to talk with governor newsom and we asked him about the recent mass -- rash of shootings and that's in the bay area. >> it is unacceptable and people have the right to be angry about it. peoples feelings are one thing. statistics are another. feelings matter more. so, we have been very aggressive. the mayor is working to do whatever we can to support them. we got the california highway patrol to increase enforcement on core doors and shopping centers alike -- core doors -- corridors and shopping centers alike. kumasi: hotels near san francisco's union square have been happy to see extra police presence after the mass retail theft. they say retells are starting to

return. according to the hotel council, prior to the pandemic, occupancy was 85%. this year, the number is in the 40% range. while that does not sound good, it is a big improvement from last year. >> it is really exciting. it is feeling really busy. almost a bit like normal on union square. i can't believe it. it has been a long 18 month run. >> our employees have been out of work for over 1.5 years. they are starting to come back. when more people travel and come here, when people stay in their hotels -- in our hotels, they are spending money outside the hotel. kumasi: they hope the police presence does not go away after the holidays. international travel is begin to pick up. 16 and 17-year-olds are not able to get vote -- are now able to get pfizer's covid booster. reggie: it comes after fives are -- pfizer's new data shows the booster works to bring antibody

levels in your system back up to p protection. -- peak protection. >> 3 million teenagers are eligible for a booster, six months after getting a second shot. the first boosters were administered to 16 and 17-year-old. it will be available at all county run locations. teenagers will need a waiver signed by a parent, online or right there on site. 79% of santa clara county residents five years old and up are fully vaccinated. that is on track to reach 80%, soon. it is one criteria needed to lift the indoor mask mandate. >> we are not anywhere near lifting it. this is not the time to be removing the masquerade it is a time to -- removing the mask. it is a time to encourage people to wear it. >> with the threat of the delta variant and the uncertainty of omicron, officials are keeping mandates in place. >> we understand delta.

we don't understand enough about omicron, yet. with increasing cases and the spread rapidly around the world, there is a lot of uncertainty around it. i think uncertainty is driving the pause button. >> -- eliminating the exception it granted last month for places like gyms, offices and churches. now, you have to wear a mask in those locations, once again. reggie: that was dan ashley, reporting. the board of directors has voted to require all 2100 employees to be vaccinated. they have not set a deadline for compliance. developing news, 54 mig have died and more than 100 others are hurt after their vehicle overturned in mexico. a crash happened at the southern end of mexico. the people were in a trailer, i trashed -- attached to a truck that was reportedly speeding. the victims included men, women

and children, mostly from honduras and guatemala. migrants fleeing violence in central america travel through mexico to get to the u.s. border and sometimes cram into large trucks, facing extremely dangerous conditions. the internal -- international organization for migration said 650 migrants have died this year, crossing into the u.s. southern border. >> el dorado county officials have filed charges against a father and son, accused of causing the massive caldor fire. it burned more than 220,000 acres near lake tahoe earlier this year. they are charged with converting a firearm into a sheen gun and possessing a silencer. the sacramento media is reporting investigators are looking into whether the fire was sparked during target practice. reggie: this weekend's storm is expected to bring a lot of snow to the lake tahoe area. dry and warm weather has forced many of these resorts to push back opening days. it has been a long way -- wait

he is the former police officer, killed while working security with a tv news crew in oakland. yesterday, law enforcement officers, friends and family paid their final respects. >> the outpouring of love and support, it means so much to us. >> law enforcement and colleagues paid tribute to him, describing him as caring, reliable and polite. he was described as a man who dearly loved his family, friends and coworkers. police are looking for suspects in the case. there is a $38,000 reward being offered for information that leads to an arrest. kumasi: younger students in oxford, michigan, will return to school today for the first time since the shooting that left four high school students dead. the parents of two students who survived are now suing the school district. >> in this morning's gma first

look, suing the school district. >> the shooter was easily identifiable. >> the teachers and counselors were so alarmed that they pulled him out of class. >> two survivors of the deadly mass shooting in michigan, alleging oxford community schools downplayed reported threats made by ethan crumbley, claiming the employer's acted recklessly by letting the 15-year-old return to class. all of that happened hours before he allegedly open fire, killing four students and wounding eight others. >> ethan crumbley had a large handgun and 38 rounds of ammunition. in his backpack, while he was being confronted by school officials who were grossly negligent. >> coming up at 7:00, we will have more on this lawsuit and what prompted the parents to file it. your gma force look. -- first look. >> a 16-year-old student at phoenicia high school is under

arrest after a threat on instagram. police were called to secure the campus. some parents decided to take the kids home, early. detectives identify the student a believer is responsible. san jose unified is taking more steps to reimagine the role of police in the district. the school board voted to remove on-campus police last june. they have set up an advisory committee to determine when law enforcement should be involved in campus issues and when things can be handled with alternatives like school counselors. the committee will look for feedback from the community. some parents say they were blindsided by this. >> we spend our time talking about -- more time talking about sj pd than we do about counseling for our children. >> we want to make sure our students and staff are safe. >> is a provision that would allow school committees to bring officers back to school before the committee makes a

major retailers are urging congress to crackdown on anonymous online sales after a surge in retail theft. the goal is to prevent sold -- stolen goods from being resold online. >> william scott says crime in the union square area is down 85% in the short time they have increased the number of officers and patrol. police are trying to make the area safer following a november 19 mass retail theft. >> 3 million 16-year-old and 17-year-olds are eligible for covid booster shots. doses were administered, minutes after receiving approval from the cdc and fda. >> funeral services will be held for bob dole at the washington national cathedral. abc news will air a special report when president biden delivers the eulogy. mike: the second atmospheric river system of the season is coming in. i think we will have urban and road flooding for sure. we will keep an eye on the

to low 30's. outside of these areas, there will be some frost. i had some this morning. thankfully i did not have to scrape it. it was not hard, yet. by the time you head out, it probably will be. a wealth of 30's in wind into the south bay and out to the coast. low to mid 40's. as we head up to noon, we can see a ton of sunshine and low to mid 50's. we will stay there for the rest of the aftno. we will drop into the 40's with increasing high clouds that don't mean anything, yet. >> people who want to be fully boosted by christmas will need to get their shot today with the holiday being 15 days away. while the delta variant remains the biggest threat in the u.s., the omicron variant has been detected in 25 states. as cases in hospitalizations and deaths rise again, officials are encouraging boosters.

more than half of the deaths have been in midwestern states. 1.9 million doses of covid-19 vaccines have been administered every day of the past week. more than half of those doses have been boosters. >> christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat. don't wait to get your booster. go and get that. it is time. reggie: he made that rhyme. kumasi: was that a rhyme? reggie: it was. kumasi: yesterday, the fda gave emergency authorizations for boosters for 16 and 17-year-old. reggie: the focus for them is hospitalizations, not case rates. >> we have set a metric that it would be based on hospitalizations. five people in the hospital per 100,000 residents. if we have that number of people in the hospital for covid-19, that would be the criteria for re-imposing the mask mandate.

reggie: five we need to be in the hospital for covid. there are two people in the hospital in marin county. 80% to 90% of people going to the grocery store are wearing masks without the mandate. 80% of marin county residents are fully vaccinated. two business leaders are receiving threats for requiring people to show vaccination. kumasi: both of these establishments received a note, threatening arson if they don't ease covid-19 restrictions. police are investigating that serious threats and believe they could be related. >> we really don't know the origin of the individual or how they related to the gym, if they even are related. the note itself will be sent to the lab for forensics. >> police are searching for the individual and are checking surveillance cameras. owners of the paper mill creek saloon are offering a reward for

any information that leads to an arrest. san francisco mayor wants to give -- the san francisco mayor wants to give -- more time. she wants to extend that to march of 2023 for all but the most severe fire and accessibility violations. is this owners complained they are struggling with the pandemic and would not be able to get all of it done in time. the board of supervisors will have to approve the extension. reggie: stopping mass shoplifting is not enough. stores in the bay area and all over the country are asking congress to go after people reselling these stolen goods. amy hollyfield is live with what retailers say will make a difference. >> retailers have had enough, reggie. they are asking out to congress to ask them to help stop the mob robberies that we are happening like the 1 -- that we are seeing, like the one at nordstrom last month. the idea is to follow the goods

don't have to use a real name and it is the convenience of those online sites that exists that is motivating the thefts and stolen goods. they want to get that shut down. reporting live in the east bay, amy hollyfield. kumasi: living a better bay area means making this a safer bay area. changes seen in san francisco seem to be making a difference in decreasing retail theft around union square. ever since the november 19 mass retail theft, s&p 80 increased the amount of -- s in pd -- smpd increase the amount of police officers. crime has been significantly reduced. all crime is down nearly 85%. >> making people feel it is ok to come to union square shop. that is important. we have seen a significant drop in client -- crime, overall.

reggie: delta flight diverted to oklahoma city after a passenger assaulted a flight attendant and air marshal. according to authorities, the passenger assaulted a flight attendant when an air marshal intervened and also got assaulted. the suspect was taken into custody at will rogers airport in oklahoma. it is unclear what counted the

altercation. police are investigating the incident. we are hearing from scott peterson's sister. kumasi: and byrd said she has no doubt he is guilty. he was sentenced to life in prison on wednesday. his sister said he appeared emotionless in court. she recalled her brother's behavior in the weeks after and lacey -- ann wei see's disappearance. >> he was was was was was was babysitter. just the lack of interest in looking for lacey was very apparent. >> scott peterson is innocent. kumasi: her comments are a start contrast to those made by peterson's sister-in-law.

they stand behind him. it was paramedics will not forget. a baby born on the side of the east bay freeway. reggie: officers were called moments after the mother gave birth. here is tim johns. >> it started thursday morning around 8:48. chp received a call about a woman on the on-ramp from wynton avenue to northbound 880. the woman was covered in blood and it was determined she had just given birth. an ambulance was called and at some point, the baby was thought to have died. jeff is a spokesperson. >> i am a retired paramedic. i can tell you that sometimes a baby is born where it will be blue or gray and not breathing and can appear dead. >> the mother was medically cleared at a local hospital but involuntarily placed in a

tonight, almost as cold as this morning. even with the veil of high clouds over top of us. 30's in our valleys. 40's around the central bay and toward the coast. here is a look at future radar. this is the high-resolution model. you can see, spreading from north to south, saturday evening into sunday morning, light to moderate rain. then, it stalls. it is stalling right over the bay. moderate rain by sunday evening. then, we have moderate to even at times heavy rain on monday. monday will be the most treacherous day out of the storm. tuesday starts to taper into those wintry showers. wednesday and thursday, we will have more chances of wintry showers. rainfall amounts, anywhere from about two to five inches. and then up to seven to eight inches in our mountains. that means flooding could be a possibility. a two on sunday. moderate.
