sunshine and calm her at noon -- calmer at noon. a chilly evening on the way. 43 to 48. that's only at 7:00. kumasi: it has been a challenge for stores in the bay area to deal with retail theft, especially with recent smash and grab that a gone viral. how could becoming on the national level. amy hollyfield is lit with more on the bill making its way through congress. amy: the idea is to follow the stolen goods from a store like this one that once it has been hit to try to sell it and shut that down. ceos and representatives from 20 major companies wrote a letter to congress in response to the fafsa happening at stores. they are asking congress to require people selling goods online to use their real name, not just a screen name and

provide other key information to make sure they are legitimate. >> they would have to provide a basic business information. name, phone number, tax id. things they have to provide anyway. amy: the biggest online marketplace says they are not the problem. a spokesperson for amazon says amazon does not allow third-party sellers to list stolen goods in our store. we work closely with law enforcement, retailers and brands to stop bad actors and hold them accountable. the company says amazon sellers must interview with them either in person or on a video chat before being allowed to sell. it is the website that don't do any of that checking that retailers want to target. the hope is congress will act in the first couple of months and the new year to pass the informed consumers act so it will not be easy to sell anonymously online. the hope is that will cut down the motive behind stealing from

these stores. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. kumasi: abc 7 news had the opportunity to speak with governor newsom. we asked about the rash of shootings and retail thefts in the bay. >> it's unacceptable. people have the right to be angry about it. people's feelings are one thing. statistics are another. feelings matter more. we have been aggressive with the mayors, working today what we can to support them getting the california highway patrol to increase enforcement around core doors near shopping centers and the like. kumasi: the governor said his new budget will include substantial increases in investment to fight organized retail theft. 16 and 17-year-olds can now get pfizer's covid booster. reggie: that came 24 hours after pfizer said new data from a laboratory test shows the booster works to bring the level of antibodies and systems back

to pete protection. here is dan ashley. dan: 3 million teenagers are eligible for a booster six month after getting a second shot. santa clara county began administering to first boosters to 16 and 17-year-olds. it will be available at all county right run locations. they will need a waiver signed by a parent. online or on site. 79% of santa clara county residents five years old and up are fully vaccinated. that's on track to reach 80% soon. it is one criteria needed to live the indoor mass mandate. >> right now we are not anywhere near lifting it. this is not the time to be removing the masks. it's a time to encourage people to wear their masks. dan: the threat of the delta variant at the uncertainty of omicron are leading officials to keep mandates in place. >> we know delta is around. we understand delta.

we don't understand enough about omicron yet. with increasing cases and the spread rapidly around the world there is a lot of uncertainty around. i think that is -- uncertainty is driving the pause button. dan: alameda county eliminate the exception grant investment for places like gyms, offices and churches were everyone is fully vaccinated. now you have to wear a mask at those locations once again. reggie: the ac transit board of directors has voted to require all 2100 employees be vaccinated. they have not set a deadline for compliance but it brings them in line with bart. developing news. 54 migrants are dead and whether 100 hurt after the vehicle overturned in mexico. it happened at the very southern end of mexico. the people were in a trailer attached to a truck reportedly speeding. the victims included men, women and children, mostly from honduras and guatemala.

motivator for these thieves. they really want to get those shut down. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. reggie: thank you. building a better bay area means making this a safer bay area. changes in san francisco seem to be making a difference in decreasing retail theft around union square. ever since that have ever 19 theft, sfpd increased officers. the goal was to make the area safer for shoppers and workers. chief william scott says it is working. the increase patrol lead to crime being significantly reduced. they say all crime in the area is down nearly 85%. >> making people feel it's ok to come to union square and shop. it's ok to come to the city and shop is important. we have seen a significant drop in crime overall, from theft to cars being broken into to burglaries. reggie: the current patrol plans and restrictions will stay in
