tequila herradura. extraordinary awaits. >> drama in antioch. a man barricaded inside this house, >> has been set on ending with it deadly confrontation with police. tonight, san francisco's archbishop was asked to reschedule his visit to a local church because he is unvaccinated. spoke to a churchgoer who said many are concerned. >> and atmospheric river is flowing her way, with heavy rain and strong, gusty. >> family and friends, beaumont east tradition is back. abc 7 news starts now. >> building a better bay area,

moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. dan: officer said the man had been shooting as neighbors cowered in their homes. good evening, thank you for joining us. let's get right abc 7 news reporter tim johns live in antioch. this all started about 1:00. reporter: as you can imagine, this is been an active day here in antioch. police say the man died after being shot by officers. that following the hours on standoff that took place in this neighborhood, just behind me. antioch police initially responded to calls of shots fired near dove court. when officers arrived on scene, it was confirmed that the suspect was armed with a rifle. he was actively shooting at cars and houses. nearby residents were told to shelter -- shelter-in-place. antioch pd said they attempted to make contact with the suspect several times, but the suspect continued firing. even bringing down a police drone. >> over the course of those

hours, the suspect repeatedly fired shots from inside the house, outside in the direction of officers, as well as of the residence. reporter: terry bunting lives one block over. several officere to her house in the afternoon, asking for access to her backyard to try and get a better vantage point. she tells me she never expected a thing like this to happen it'. a lot of older people, people with kids, grandkids. we don't have reporter: a lot of problems. reporter:after hours of stalemate, the suspect set fire to the inside of the garage. flames soon in both the house and the man came outside where he was confronted by swat officers. >> after making contact with officers, they fired their weapons and the suspect was struck. reporter: the men received immediate medical attention but was pronounced dead on the

scene. they would not say if the man was armed or brandishing a weapon when he was shot. no officer was injured, but community service officer directing traffic was hit by car. he is in serious condition. one else was in the house. there's no indication yet as to what the motive was. the man's name has not been released. it is believed to in his 30's. because an officer fired his weapon, the contra costa law enforcement protocol has been enacted. that means the officers involved will be placed in administrative leave. that is standard procedure. dan: thanks very much. all night tonight on our abc 7 news app, we kept neighbors updated with the latest information from police. recent this alert as we live-streamed the news conference from authorities. if you want alerts like this, the app is free to download. breaking news, a series of powerful storms and tornadoes

ripped the midwest tonight from arkansas to illinois. in edwardsville, illinois, emergency crews responded to a roof collapse at the amazon warehouse. it is not clear how many people were hurt, the emergency agency is calling a mass. friends and relatives are concerned. >> i've no idea what is going on. we are worried sick. we want to know if he is ok. dan: you can imagine how worried they are. as many as 100 people were believed to be in the building at the time. we will stay on that story. one person was killed and five others injured at a nursing home in arkansas. at least way people work trapped in the building when the roof collapse. here you see first responders helping some the residents get to safety. it has been tense in the midwest. let's get to spencer christian, tracking a hefty storm moving into the bay spencer: this weekend. spencer:spencer: aspen

local church was rescheduled because a number of people were worried he was not vaccinated. our reporter spoke to one of the parishioners from saint agnes church says the archbishop is welcome, only if you get the covid vaccine. reporter: the news that the archbishop is unvaccinated just cost him a visit to a church in san francisco. >> because he is not vaccinated, and we've had breakthrough vaccinations in the church, i'm not comfortable. reporter: december 19 was the date the archbishop was scheduled to visit saint agnes church. several weeks before his visit, churchgoers voiced concerns. this church is taking a stance. i called and spoke with him and asked him to reschedule his visits for a later time. this was a bulletin pastor george williams posted on the church's website. the san francisco diocese has been outspoken about the covid

vaccine, encouraging san franciscans to get vaccinated. and while, the archbishop is not. in a statement, the archdiocese responded, health care decisions are personal matter. the archbishop has every confidence in father williams ability to know his people and respond to their sensitivities with compassion. >> not that he is saying we don't want you, we would more than welcome you here if you came vaccinated. reporter: in august, pope francis urged people to get vaccinated, calling it an act of love. during an interview with the san francisco chronicle, the archbishop said his personal doctor told him it is probably not necessary for him to be vaccinated. citing his immune system is strong. >> if there was some health reason, i could see it. there's no religious reason. from the catholic church that would stop you from being vaccinated.

dan: m m m m americans have now received a covid-19 booster shot. health officials are urging everyone who is eligible to do so because of the omicron variant. santa clara county reported its first case of the variant today. it is states known case in the bay area. >> the person had traveled to florida, most likely where they were exposed. a community exposure in florida rather than an international exposure. reporter: the santa clara county public health officers as the person was vaccinated but not boosted. they are experiencing mild symptoms. it is the eighth case in the bay area, first in the nation was discovered in san francisco. there are six cases and east bay among people who work at kaiser's oakland pedicle center. the infections are linked to a wedding in wisconsin. >> we all did the right thing.
