announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> it was like matchsticks. the whole town looks just like matched around. >> complete devastation, 10th across six states in the midwest taking up the pieces of what is left after a tornado swept through the area. dozens of people have died and now rescuers are on the ground trying to find people who are trapped in buildings. good morning, everybody, this is abc 7 news at 9:00 a.m. right here on abc seven, hulu live and wherever you stream we are going to have much more on those deadly tornadoes in just a minute, but let's start locally with a quick look at the weather. the storm is moving in across the bay area. rain coming down pretty hardy upleurago s

.ddroadwa a lisa argen has been tracking the storm for us. it is going to be a wet day and a wet week. laura -- lisa: lisa: lisa: lisa: a cold front that is going to push to the south of us and fill in later on in the peninsula and the santa cruz mountains. right now you can see the sporadic, light rain. pockets of heavier rain, that is what is going on in the hills above fremont as well. we go down down down down getting a light rain. it has been dry insane martin, down through morgan hill. not a lot going on. that is going to change. the coastal hills and over into the east bay, some light rain. a bit of a break. north bay saw that overnight, we have that video. right now it is quiet except along the coast line we have the rain. by 4:00, the winds are really

picking up. look at the golden. yes, it is quiet with some light showers. inches. higher amount along the peninsula in the south bay. for the rest of the day-to-day, on and off light rain, some periods of heavier rain later on tonight. we are really going to get into some heavy rain around the burn star area, the coastal hills, and then we are going to talk about thunderstorm potential with hail tomorrow and low snow levels in the tuesday. luz: rescuers are combing through fields of wreckage after the tomato outbreak that board across the middle of the u.s. leaving dozens dead and communities in real despair. western kentucky is the area where most of the damage and loss of life is concentrated. eldon lopez has more.

>> a desperate search underway. rescuers racing to find survivors after a swath of tornadoes tore through six states. these images showing the depth of the devastation in the city of mayfield. kentucky had the hardest. fema administrator today meeting with local officials including the governor. he says at least 70 people have died. he warns that death toll will likely climb and could go over 100. >> this is the hardest nato event we've ever been through. -- tornado event we've ever been through. not just because of the property damage, we lost a lot of good people. >> the system seen from miles away. >> it's coming right toward us. i went and got in the basement. hunkered down until the past by. >> in mayfield, a candle factory demolished. as many as 110 people believed

to be inside when it collapsed. >> if anybody else is found alive. >> the whole building felt. >> moments after, she recorded this video calling for help you can hear the cries in the background as she pleads for help. she was one of more than three dozen people rescued. another worker was rescued and rushed to the hospital where he spoke to us from his bed. >> entered the double doors, the wall to my right completely vanished. my main focus was just trying to make sure i can, you know, savor every breath i was able to take in. >> terrifying hours trapped in the debris. around him, colleagues who did

not make it. >> i kept hearing people around me yelling this person has died, this person is not responding. like, people were just panicking. >> many nearby structures reduced to mangled debris, residents now going through the pieces of their lives reduced to rubble, salvaging everything they can. >> i had a gold sofa here, this is where my patients would sit. . >> now, kentuckians pouring out into the communities, pulling together and helping one another as they face the unimaginable. luz: really, really sad to see what is happening there. back here at home in the north bay as we were talking about before, some residents are preparing for today's storm. they are hoping for the best. luz has more from sendo rosa. luz: this is the calm before the

storm. >> right now the national weather service has shifted the focus of the system to the south which is a good song. for us, we are looking for beneficial rain which promotes regrowth, especially in our burn star areas. luz: rebecca ryan remembers this. >> it was very flooded. it looked like a little river coming down the street. luz: in late october, 95 homes evacuated. did you evacuate? >> we did. we just had to go a few blocks down and then we were out of the water danger but we were not even sure if we would get the car through the water, it was so deep. ky in the mountains. residents are keeping a close eye on the creek. >> came through here, right about there. right where that crack is.

>> the creek runs directly behind tom sawyer's backyard. >> what i'm concerned about is if they don't keep the sediment and the vegetation from growing in the channel about 3000 feet of an upstream, then all of that is going to wash down and collect under the bridge and then block the bridge and then have flooding again. >> cities across the bay area are providing sandbags ahead of the storm, urging residents to prepare. >> check to see how your systems are doing, make sure the water is going where you want it to go. >> in the east bay, the oakland zoo will be closed today because of the weather. the closure include the nighttime globefari event. if you have reservations for today, you will be able to rebook or a refund. and you can keep an eye on the weather any time available on

roku, amazon fire, android tv and apple tv. new developments in governor newsom's gun-control plan. the governor is working on a way for private citizens to be allowed to sue makers of assault rifles and ghost guns. he announced this plan on twitter last night and he says it is inspired by texas'latest abortion law which allows private citizens to sue abortion providers. friday, the supreme court upheld the texas law in most cases so newsome says his plan would allow residents to seek damages of up to at least $10,000 and legal fees against anybody who manufactures, distributes or sells an assault weapon or ghost gun in california. he says he has directed his staff to work with lawmakers and the attorney general on a bill that would enact his plan. the search is underway to find a thief who targeted a local toy drive that helps bay area children in need. tim johns spoke with one of the organizers who say at first, the thief tried to fool them.

>> for the past 28 years, the organization has partnered with the dominic hoskins black history museum too annual toy drive in redwood city. this year had been no different. that is, until saturday afternoon. >> and then all of a sudden she started screaming saying we are being robbed. >> carolyn hoskins is the director of the drive which collects both toys and monetary donations to help buy better christmases for children in need. she tells me around 3:00 p.m. saturday afternoon a man walked into the group storefront on jefferson avenue. hoskins says the man was friendly and chatted with several members of her team including herself. all of a sudden as he was near the door, he smashed his hands into the donation box and ran off with the money the group had been raising for the past two days. >> it was going to go to to buy gift cards and things that were much-needed for kids.

so now, that money is gone. >> about $500 was stolen. she says she is heartbroken that someone would steal money from the organization. >> we are here to help. if he needed money, even if he were to ask me, i would have donated to his cause. >> hoskins says the man rode away on a bike and was wearing what appeared to be some sort law enforcement badge. >> when i saw the badge on him i felt comfortable. it wasn't like somebody that i felt like i had to watch. >> police have opened an investigation into the incident and told hoskins that the badge was likely a fake but with just four days left until the toy drive is set to end, hoskins is now asking for the community's help to make christmas a little brighter. >> we are asking people to please try and help us to regroup the money that was taken from us today.

liz: welcome back. here is a live look of our doppler seven. tracking rain across the bay area this morning and we are going to have that rain through the week, so definitely feeling like winter. we are learning more about a deadly standoff in the east bay that happened friday in antioch. we are talking about an incident that happened in antioch where an armed man who filed a rifle at cars and houses was shot and killed by police after a standoff at the suspects home which later caught fire. >> a dramatic end friday night, gunfire and a house fully engulfed in flames. it is where police say a man barricaded himself after shooting at cars on the street earlier in the day. >> when officers arrived on

scene it was confirmed of the suspect was armed with a rifle and was actively shooting at cars and houses. >> neighbor roland sunga heard the shots. >> doing my laundry and i heard like three gunshots and i was thinking it was an attacker. >> neighbors were scholz -- told shelter-in-place. police said they try to make contact with the suspect several times. the man continued firing at houses and toward officers, even bringing down this police. >> it's crazy, we saw everything on the news. i said i kind of figured it might have been him. >> he said his neighbor, a man in his 40's was always friendly, never angry or violent. >> with this pandemic going on, it affected a lot of people in different ways. i don't know if it affected him, if he had other things going on in his life. >> police say the suspect set fire to the garage, flames soon engulfing the house. >> the house was on fire and i

was wondering should i evacuate? >> the man came outside where he was confronted by swat team members. >> after making contact with officers they fired their weapons in the suspect was struck. >> police would not say if the man was armed or brandishing a gun when he was shot. no officers were injured. the da says her office is now investigating. >> i understand rounds were fired but we are glad we've been contained here so now we are just on follow-up investigation. liz: turning now to the pandemic and the omicron variant that continues to spread. it has now been detected in at least 29 states. study out of the united kingdom has found boosters add a significant layer substantially raising the efficacy. officials are protecting omicron will overtake delta as a

dominant variant in some european countries as early as this week. and it is not a question of if, but when. steph curry chasing the nba record for three-pointers. last night in philadelphia, he did fall short. his next chances tomorrow in indianapolis at the warriors road trip continues. our sports anchor was in philly and spoke with him after the game. >> for steph curry's run at history, he is going to have to wait another night. he did score 18 as the warriors lose by nine to the 76ers. it was a playoff atmosphere from the jump and while it was not his best shooting night, he is now seven from the all-time record. now, all eyes turn to the rest n boston and toronto later in the week. one thing for sure, there is no panic as breaking the record is inevitable. >> i'm going to focus on

brief, heavy rain. here is a look at live doppler 7 where we have moderate rain, but we take you to the north and you had a rain overnight. right now it is quiet in santa rosa and penn grove as well as inverness. it has been sporadic along the peninsula, the san mateo bridge, 92. rain earlier in oakland. some spotty, light showers as well as pleasanton. heavy rain in the hills over into fremont. a few light showers down around the south bay, but it has been quiet around san martin. this is all going to move in and shift to the south. it has been snowing over four inches around palisades in the sierra nevada. over an inch since midnight. a third of an inch up in napa and elsewhere, a couple hundreds to 51 hundredths in hayward and redwood city. the fog is with us from santa rosa to nevada. the winds are up, and the wind

advisory goes into effect for clock so it is breezy everywhere right now. the golden gate bridge doesn't look too bad, that will be changing. 50 downtown, 42 in morgan hill. over the road, it is wet, upper 40's. roadways are slick. we are going to add in some wind. looks quiet but ominous, rainy and windy as we get tonight into monday. some thunderstorms, hail possible. here is a high surf advisory. later on tomorrow until wednesday, 20-25 foot breaking waves, so very dangerous. we go through the next several hours and you want to follow the colors where it is going to be along the coast. the east bay, the south bay. of course, the upper elevations and the hills will see some breezy wind, but that is going to be the order of the front as it continues to march to the south. before that it will fill in and you will see the ring in the north bay. look what happens by late in the

afternoon. more rain along the peninsula into the south bay, into the east bay. this is 10:00, and this is very support of the system is. wait until you see what happens monday. north bay gets the cold air, a good chance of thunderstorms offshore into the north bay. really, anyone is fair game into monday afternoon. that is going to be a real interesting day tomorrow as we get that cold air, unstable air with us. about five inches to the mountains, up to two in oakland. less than that in nevada. you've heard about the snow, up to six feet above 7000 feet. and there is a look at that outrageous snowfall forecast. mid-50's, rainy, getting windier and regnier along the peninsula and the south bay today, and level two system. level three because we could see the thunderstorms, the hail, very brief heavy rain on monday,

christmas is less than two weeks away and many people are spending the weekend doing their holiday shopping. according to research from consulting firm accenture, people in the bay area are expected to spend significantly more on gifts this year than last year. >> in the bay area, and and and if consumers are ready to spend up to $800 for -- perhaps over the holiday season. that is almost double from where they were last year. last year, they were just under $500. that is a significant difference that we are seeing in regards to consumers even ready to spend and get out there. liz: and how much is that because people are ready to spend more versus inflation? >> we think that some of it is absolutely due to inflation and some of it is actually, you know, for those who have the ability to shop last year, maybe dish out a little bit less, they

this morning. lisa: a light to moderate atmospheric river and the entire bay area is not making it out all the same. the heaviest rain this time is not going to be in the north bay, although we do have some pretty active weather headed your way for later on tonight and tomorrow. live doppler 7 picks up the sporadic rain. as we get in a little bit closer, we will show you over into the east bay around hayward and the hills, you had some heavy rain. the south bay, not so much. along the coast, some spotty, light showers. into the east bay, it has been light. the valley looking at some rain. winter advisory later on today, gusting to 55 miles per hour. low 50's with light rain showers. you can see the rain and the breeze. 45 by the delta. here is the plan for 9:00 10:00. we are going to see the rain moving from the coast in from the southwest northeast we will see more rain. the heavier rain shifts from the

east bay to the south bay and the peninsula through 7:00, 8:00 hour and then into the overnight hours. that was a treat for you to see the seven-day. you are not supposed to see that you lots to talk about between now and then. liz: developing news, cleanup n efforts are underway in the midwest where tornadoes tore through several states and left dozens dead and communities in despair. storms smashed apart a candle factory, crushed a nursing home and flattened an amazon distribution center. we are doing live from kentucky with the latest on these rescue operations. >> good morning. we are right here in mayfield, kentucky which several people are calling the epicenter of these tornadoes. the damage that happened all across town is emblematic of what you see right behind me: full buildings reduced to rubble. this morning, the effort on the ground are focused on two

things: recovery and city lending a helping hand. the cleanup efforts are underway. after more than 20 reported tornadoes left at half of destruction across six states. >> this is likely to be one of the largest terminal operations and air history. we are going to get through this together. the federal government is not going to walk away. >> much of mayfield, kentucky devastated. >> our whole town looks like matchsticks lying around. we've had the most extraordinary helpful officers and responders healthy who working gloriously. >> this was once the waiting room where dr. smith saw patients. it is now gutted. the roof, blown off her mental health clinic. >> it is here with the upstairs office. >> this candle factory destroyed. 110 workers feared inside. kiana parsons-perez recorded this video moments after the collapse. in kentucky, drone video shows the scope of the devastation after ef3 tornado with wind up

to 150 miles per hour touched down. another tornado touched this amazon facility in illinois. officials confirm at least six fatalities. >> there's a lot of heavy concrete down inside the building. i'm asking you for thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families. isis nursingis nur killing one person leading five others her. several businesses were also destroyed including this restaurant. >> it just took a direct hit. it is going to be a total loss. the community response is really, really touching. >> following the emergency declaration, alejandro mayorkas will be coming here today with the fema administrator to survey the damage.

report. now to the pandemic as covid cases continue to search across the country. 36 states have seen a jump in daily cases of about 10% or more in the past week. karina mitchell has more on hospitals that are filling up. >> with much of the u.s. in the midst of a post-thanksgiving winter surge, some hospitals are yet again feeling pushed to the max. >> it is a chance to, yo, yo those numbers could get really high and make it difficult for people to get care in the hospital. >> michigan is now one of 17 states with an icu capacity of 50% or less. the military is deploying medical personnel to help straight health care workers. nati medical response teams are helping in new mexico as well. health experts say the search is being fueled bike -- surgw is being fuelede buy colder temperatures as well as the delta variant and 93 million unvaccinated americans.

at least 36 states are seeing an increase of 10% or more in new daily infections. in new york, a new mandate taking effect will require masks in all indoor public places unless businesses and venues check for proof of vaccination. >> if all of a sudden everybody in new york state vaccination in the next two weeks, we will have a different conversation. >> adults and children lining up to get their shot at this mobile vaccination clinic. >> we want to get over all of this mostly gone. but in order to do it, we have to abide by some of the rules. >> more than 50 million americans have proceeded booster shot. those doses now extended to 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds. >> vaccination was a primary series and boosting was an additional dose for those who are eligible will keep people out of the hospital and save lives. >> have learned a couple of things about the omicron variant. this morning he talked about preliminary data with george stephanopoulos. >> it appears to be able to

evade some of the immune protection of things like monoclonal antibodies, convalescent plasma, and the antibodies induced by vaccines. this somewhat encouraging news is that culinary data shows that when you get a booster, for example, the third shot, it raises the level of protection high enough that it then does do well against the omicron which is, again, another reason to encourage people who are not vaccinated to get vaccinated, but particularly those who are vaccinated to get boosters because that tends to go way back up again. liz: dr. fauci also says it appears the omicron variant has a higher rate of transmission compared to the delta variant. we are learning more about how president biden's bipartisan infrastructure bill will impact public transportation here in the bay area. nancy pelosi and jackie speier

joined local transportation leaders to announce the details of the funding. part of the money is going to go toward extending caltrain into the salesforce transit center and electrifying trains. transit options will also become more readily available for underserved communities, seniors, and people with disabilities. >> this is the biggest investment in infrastructure in the history of this country. for at least 70 years. we have neglected it and now, finally, we are taking steps to fix it. liz: the recently-passed infrastructure build will provide $4.5 billion for projects across the bay area. still i had now, they are just babies, but they could help damaged coral reefs across the globe. we will show you this spohn lab at the california academy of sciences and how it could help fight against climate change. 10 here is a live look outside this morning. you can see those raindrops. it is a rainy start to our
