cover including the latest on that tornado outbreak. a live look at hard hit mayfield, kentucky, the sheer scale of destruction making it difficult for officials to assess the full extent of the tragedy. we're going to have much more on that in a few moments. >> so much more going on there. we'll begin in washington where the house is set to hold former trump chief of staff mark meadows in contempt of congress for refusing to cooperate with the committee probing the january 6th insurrection. as committee members revealed text messages he received that day from the president's inner circles and anchors on fox news. chief washington correspondent jon karl starts us off. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. today congress is poised to do something it has never done before, hold one of its former members in criminal contempt and in the process the january 6th committee has revealed startling new details about what people closest to the former president were doing as the capitol was under attack. mark meadows was chief of staff during the final days of the trump presidency. privy to the actions of the

former president and his inner circle as rioters stormed the capitol. now the january 6th committee wants the house to hold him in criminal contempt because he is refusing to answer questions about any of it. >> no one is above the law. not even a former president's chief of staff. >> reporter: before refusing to cooperate, meadows had turned over thousands of documents including text messages and emails on his personal cell phones. liz cheney, the top republican on the committee says that some of them are from the president's own son, pleading with meadows to get his father to call off the riot. >> quote, he's got to condemn this [muted] asap. the capitol police tweet is not enough. donald trump jr. texted that. meadows responded, quote, i'm pushing it hard. i agree. still president trump did not immediately act. donald trump jr. texted again and again urging action by the

president. quote, we need an oval office address. he has to lead now. it has gone too far and gotten out of hand, end quote. >> reporter: cheney disclosed text messages she says were from fox news hosts to meadows as trump supporters rampaged inside the capitol. sean hannity suggested, quote, can he make a statement asking people to leave the capitol? laura ingraham writing, mark, the president needs to tell the people in the capitol to go home. this is hurting all of us. he is destroying his legacy. also among the 9,000 pages of communications meadows handed over to the committee were emails showing that prior to january 6th, meadows told an unnamed associate, quote, the national guard would be present to protect pro-trump people. but after turning over those messages and much more, meadows decided to refuse to cooperate further saying the former president didn't want him to because it would violate the

principle of executive privilege, the idea that a president is entitled to confidential advice from his aides. the committee says meadows and trump are simply trying to obstruct their investigation. >> either you're on the side of helping us figure out why or you are trying to stop us from getting those answers. >> reporter: meadows' lawyer is pleading with congress not to go forward with this contempt resolution saying that he was simply abiding by the wishes of the former president and calling the resolution a, quote, rush to judgment. >> making that plea, but they know where this is headed. >> reporter: yeah, it's clear, fully expected that congress will vote to hold him in contempt. the thing not clear is whether or not the justice department will do what they did in the case of steve bannon and actually go the next step which is to prosecute him. of course, if the justice department prosecutes him he could face up to a year in prison. >> jon karl, thanks very much. robin? we turn to the latest on that tornado disaster.

at least 88 people lost their lives across five states, kentucky hardest hit. president biden planning to visit some of the most devastated communities tomorrow including mayfield, kentucky, where elwyn lopez is this morning with the latest. good morning, elwyn. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning. the reality of what took place here still settling in for the city of 10,000 people. take a look at this. this side blown out, this staircase exposed, christmas decorations still clinging to it and now take a look at this. this is the magnitude of debris that search and rescue crews are up against as they sift through it trying to find anyone who might still be missing. this morning, the death toll rising. at least 88 lives lost across 5 states after the nation's deadliest tornado outbreak in more than a decade. at least 74 of those here in kentucky. the ages ranging from just a few months to 86 years old. 2-month-old oaklynn koon died

monday morning from her injuries. >> we expect the death toll will continue to grow. >> reporter: among those killed eight employees at this candle factory in mayfield including 47-year-old robert daniel, 21-year-old devin burden and 36-year-old joe ward. they were working the night shift when the twister tore through. >> what was it that you were hearing? >> just fear and death. i was afraid i was listening to people die. >> reporter: charla payne was trapped in the factory communicating through her cell phone and a radio. her son and others racing to rescue dozens. >> we could hear him talk. he couldn't hear us scream. they started walking on top of us and we could feel stuff caving in. >> reporter: father of two jim douglas was also trapped under 15 to 20 feet of twisted steel for four hours. our david muir spoke with him at the hospital while he tries to recover. >> if i could ask you what do you remember?

>> i could hear like some loud thumps that i thought was big hail or something and then it was like the roof, the roof lifted up and i was right next to the wall and it's like the roof slammed down and then the wall came down on top of me, hit me in the head. >> reporter: nearby charles cook's home was wiped away. he, his pregnant wife and four children under the age of 10 were slung into a field more than 100 yards away. >> almost like you were in a war where grenades went off. i remember the lightning, the power flickering and then it went off. next thing i know i felt suction, slipped, hit the

ceiling and looking up at a dark sky while it was raining. >> reporter: with broken bones his 7-year-old son thomas woke up, grabbed his brother daniel and the two set out to get help. their baby brother found by a next-door neighbor wandering about crying for his parents. >> your children saved your life? >> absolutely. absolutely. >> reporter: and charles tells me his wife was airlifted to a hospital in nashville. they were able to save their fifth child through an emergency c-section. anna joy, she w w pounds. charles tells me his main concern is to be able to recover quickly enough, gain enough strength to be able to see his wife, be by her side and meet his newborn baby girl. >> i'll bet. we well, elwyn, thanks very much. we move to illinois where six people were killed in that amazon warehouse. we're getting a more clear picture of the fatal final moments include the building. rob marciano is in edwardsville with that. good morning, rob.

>> reporter: good morning. we are learning new details of exactly what happened inside this sunscreen package processing facility the night that ef-3 tornado hit with winds of 150 miles an hour cutting through the concrete walls. 20-minute lead time, that's what they had as a warning when they were working inside that a tornado was coming. gave them enough time to scramble north into the shelter in place area. but this is all happening around 8:00 when drivers were finishing their daily routes so there probably were some drivers outside not getting the warning maybe seeing the tornado as it approached and scrambling inside what they hoped to be a safe place. all of the six deceased and one victim still in the hospital were discovered in this same place, presumably huddling together in what they hoped to be a safe spot then the tornado hit and concrete walls collapsed around them. frightening, heartbreaking details. osha is on site here today invest gaiting the safety protocols. michael? >> as you said, heartbreaking, rob, thank you so much. we turn to the new record-breaking storm slamming the west and ginger is tracking the dangerous whiteout conditions in california and more. good morning, ginger. >> that same storm that could impact folks that were just hit so hard with flash flooding and

maybe even more severe weather. i'll connect the two. let's start with what it looks like in the sierra. we were in an incredible deficit as far as snow goes. now, more than three feet has already fallen, looking from six to eight feet. goes from absolutely nothing to way too much too fast. san mateo, california, gusts around 80 miles per hour and three to nine inches of rain falling around the bay area. three to nine inches of rain falling around the bay area. one man or a person in this home had to be rescued. we still worry about flash flooding especially around l.a. and burn scars. record december heat again this week ahead of it so you know the fuel is there to make thunderstorms. the first stop will be from minnesota to iowa to texas and here's what's different about this. this front slows down this time. that usually means more of a flash flood threat but we will keep the damaging wind and tornado threat and keep you updated. robin? >> we know you will. ginger, thank you. now to breaking news in the fight against the coronavirus. pfizer just reporting promising data on its covid treatment pill. trevor ault is outside pfizer

headquarters here in new york. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. so the vaccine has already been a breakthrough in stemming the spread of the virus. we know that but an effective early treatment for people who do get infected is a piece of the puzzle that we need. pfizer now says its data shows their covid-19 pill could save lives. this morning as the u.s. passes 50 million confirmed cases of covid-19 there's promising news overnight about treating this deadly virus. pfizer unveiling new data from its covid treatment pill that shows it could save thousands of lives. >> i'm optimistic because i think we never were so close to put an end to this pandemic by having so powerful tools. >> reporter: it's a series of 30 pills taken over five days and lab experiments show when taken within three days of diagnosis it can reduce the risk of hospitalization or death by 89% and 88% among high risk unvaccinated patients when taken within five days.

>> it is a game changer. but at the same time i want to emphasize that no one should use the existence of the pill as an excuse to avoid vaccination. >> the u.s. has already purchased 10 million treatments and pfizer's ceo says the pill could possibly be approved before the end of the year though the fda will still need to review the data. merck has already submitted data to the fda requesting approval for their pill which showed a 30% reduction in hospitalization and death. both companies believe their pills will likely work against the omicron variant. and a new study not yet peer reviewed shows prior immunity will help against the variant too. the study finding omicron is unlikely to cause severe illness in people who have been vaccinated or previously infected. and here in new york health care workers are still required to get vaccinated. a small group of doctors and nurses asked the supreme court to block that order but the

court has now refused to do so. michael? >> all right, trevor, thank you. now to the worsening covid crisis in the united kingdom. the british health secretary saying omicron is set to become the dominant covid strain in london and the uk has reported its first death of a person with the new variant. maggie rulli is in london for us this morning. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: hey, michael, good morning. health officials are saying that no other covid variant has spread this fast and they fear that in less than 36 hours variant here in london. dominan- now, already it makes up 44% of cases in the city and numbers are doubling every two to three days. so far there are ten confirmed cases in hospitals and the first death from omicron has been reported here in the uk but at this point we still don't know anything about that patient's age or any pre-existing conditions. now, officials are now warning we should expect to see numbers dramatically increase in the coming days and weeks that lie ahead. but, guys, by how much and how severe? that we still don't know. this is such a new variant and

officials are trying to keep up with science that's unfolding in realtime. >> so much to keep up with, maggie. for now the government there is saying the best course of action is for people to get booster shots. >> reporter: yeah, exactly, michael. that's our best bet. the health secretary confirmed two shots is not always enough to prevent symptomatic infection of omicron but a booster does provide strong protection. now, since they made that announcement we have been seeing long lines at pop-up booster clinics. some wrapping around the block as the government warns we're in another race of variant versus the vaccine. >> thank you so much, maggie. george? we will switch gears to steph curry, so close now to breaking the all-time three-point record. may happen tonight. right down the street at one of the world's most famous arenas and t.j. holmes has the story. >> will happen, george. it's happening. you'll remember watching those home run race, right? we would tune in to see at bats waiting on guys to break the record. that's what we've been looking at with steph curry for the past

ship mystery. a woman fell overboard from the balcony of her stateroom. the fbi is now getting involved after the coast guard called off their search. kaylee hartung is at the cruise ship port in long beach with more for us. good morning, kaylee. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, robin. it was supposed to be a three-day cruise from here in southern california to evnsenad, mexico. that ship returned but one woman did not. it's unclear how and why she went overboard and the search for her ended at sea with the search for clues now continuing. this morning, the fbi investigating a deadly mystery at sea. a woman falling overboard from this cruise ship in the middle of the night. 35 miles off the coast of mexico. >> heard man overboard, man overboard port side. man overboard. >> reporter: a woman in her 20s who has not yet been identified was traveling on the carnival "miracle." the cruise line saying she fell early saturday morning from the balcony of her stateroom. passengers say they were told unreleased security footage from the ship captured her fall. >> i had a balcony.

so i went outside and looked and immediately they were throwing life preservers. they threw two out into the ocean. >> reporter: the coast guard, mexican navy and another cruise ship joining the search but after more than 31 hours with no sign of her, the search was called off. >> just as humans you feel for this family and this girl. >> reporter: rod says passengers were trying to help look for her too. the woman's balcony cordoned off. he says you could see damage to the outdoor deck there. >> on the balconies there are partitions between each stateroom. that piece of privacy metal was down on the deck. >> reporter: when the ship returned, the fbi sending an evidence response team on board to search for clues. >> there's a lot of questions, you know and a lot of questions not being answered. all i can tell you this has been the cruise from hell. >> reporter: in a statement carnival saying our thoughts are with the guest and her family and our care team is providing support. the fbi's evidence response team has completed its work. now they say they're using all investigative techniques to try

>> it was different. it was weird to watch. >> it was weird to watch but i will say, you were -- people at home and like your family and friends who were there were more nervous than we were in the capsule. >> even on that walk up? >> even on the walk up. well, george, you start to realize, this is real. we rehearsed everything so many times and they do a great job of training you with everything you're going to go through so when it's actually happening it feels like we've done this before. it's just, you know, now we're actually going to do it. we can't wait. the anticipation to do it, you just want to do it. >> we were texting back and forth on saturday. i could tell this really changed you. that you were -- that it -- we all knew you were excited but it evening exceeded what you thought it would be. >> whatever you think it's going to be and you set your standards high, it exceeds it. >> but why? what is -- >> george, it is something about you take off in that rocket and the energy of it when you hit

the point where you're weightless and undo your harness and float and you're with these people you developed this bond with. i mean, it's the ultimate bond. then to look back at the planet. you're in light looking up at darkness. pretty soon you're in darkness and looking down at the light of the planet and it shows you how fragile and how small the part of you are of something that may seem significant like earth but earth is fragile and small itself in the grand scheme of things. so kind of sets your perspective in a totally different way. >> you say you practiced and rehearsed but still you knew it was going to happen. was there anything that still surprised you as prepped as you were? >> all of it. i mean, you're still surprised by all of it. the g-forces when you're going up. 3gs going up. 5gs coming down. when it gets orange inside from the jet engine.

it's just water that comes from the by-products of all this. so what they're doing is in a lot of ways trying to save the planet by going outside of the planet. i had a better understanding of that sitting with the engineers and sitting with former astronauts who had been in space who literally have been there several times and said their whole life mission is to make it back. after going for the few minutes that we were there, i see why. >> so you're going back? >> absolutely. if you ask me, i would go back in a heart beat. wouldn't think twice about it. >> final question, what did your mama say? >> my mama -- i said, mom, were you nervous? she said, your dad jumped out of planes for a living, son. nothing you could do could make me nervous. >> oh, wow. >> she was really good about it or she played cool with it but it was great to have her there. my kids were there. family and other friends and it was truly bonding for all of us and when we had that delay in the launch time, that just gave us more time to hang out together and you realize that

>> how could you make us wait 18 years since the last one in 2003? did you ever imagine you'd be back in this universe? >> i never imagined it. i was completely shocked when i got that text message and a phone call with our director. keanu jokes -- keanu says he had to stand up. i had to sit down. i was just completely in shock. i'm still a little in shock that i'm here talking about this movie that has meant so much to me as much as it changed your life in viewing it, changed my life in being in it and in watching it and continuing to watch it. it's just like layers and layers of so much to think about, to open and expand your mind and i personally love to did that. >> i saw it last night and it's fantastic. >> oh, good. thank you so much. >> i love -- i'm happy it's back. but did you have any hesitations about returning? >> no. >> really? >> no, no. >> you knew. that was it. >> what would that hesitation

that again and we spent i think about six weeks this time and, you know, stretching, running, doing different kicks and punches and then i'd work with my pilates trainer, constance, who is my dear friend too and we'd be on the treadmill. i had two hours of just trying to get in shape. i've had three children. i have not had a lot of time to work out. maybe 20 minutes here, 20 minute there is to have two hours to work out was really great and then learning all the different action, like it would be all day monday through friday. >> you talked about the profound changes this movie made for you. what is the biggest one? >> what is the most profound change? so many, it's hard to put into words. i think to spend time with someone like keanu just what's coming to mind right now, he has such a commitment and dedication to what he does. he works harder than anyone i've ever met in my life and that was amazing especially in the '90s to 2000 to be around people who were very successful and i was really kind of coming up in my

career. that was a big moment for me. to see someone of such i guess the word is fame to be so grounded, so real and still about the work and that's what this whole experience, lana, everybody, everybody is there top on their game and they're giving everything they have and it changes you to be around that kind of artistry, that commitment and passion and we were all so thrilled to be a part of this and to be making this movie again and i just feel like inside of me i feel like that -- i bring that into everything i do. >> it's a big change. >> it's huge. >> i figured out what i'm going to ask him just from that answer. gave me something for keanu. >> you were taking notes. >> taking notes. >> that was well said. you are a delight. >> thank you. >> we're so happy for you. thank you, thank you, thank you. don't make us wait so long. don't do that. >> i'll be 100 next. >> "the matrix resurrections" is

screen but now she's taking a turn behind the camera making her directorial debut with "the lost daughter." good morning, maggie. >> hi, good morning. >> you know, first of all, i want to say congratulations to you because you're already winning awards here for this film. the venice film festival, the gotham awards and critic's choice awards nominated for best adapted screenplay. so how does that feel? >> i mean, it feels great. it feels great, yeah. >> and this film stars olivia colman. she plays the lead and takes an hnest look at motherhood. we're going to take a look at a clip before we discuss it more. check it out. >> okay. >> really put us through it, huh? >> i thought you said you were pregnant with your first. >> i am. what were your daughters like

when you were little? were they like this willful little creature? >> i honestly can't remember much actually. >> oh, no, you can't forget anything about your own children. >> is that your experience? >> now, you've been in the movie business almost three decades but this is your first time as a screenwriter, as a director, what made you decide to get behind the camera? >> well, now that i've done it, now that i've directed this film, i think i see that i was always a director and i just didn't even allow myself to think about how much i wanted that, like as an actress i was always kind of bumping up against the edges of what i could express, you know. i mean, there are exceptions to this but there are a lot of people who don't love actresses with ideas. and -- >> interesting. >> or how you have to get your ideas in, you have to offer with a spoonful of sugar. you have to be funny and it's a

lot of work. and i think i just -- i think i got tired of it. i think i wanted to be able to freely say all the things i wanted to say. >> and i love that. actually you also you're directing your husband, peter sarsgaard in this. >> yes. >> what was it like directing your other half? >> i mean it was a total pleasure. my husband is amazing. i was just thinking like we were just talking about how the holidays are coming up and i just keep buying presents for my husband because i feel so grateful to him, not just for how brilliant he is in my film which he is but also my husband like kept my family running when i was directing this film. i mean we were all together but, you know, he was making sure the teeth were brushed and, you know, not -- not every husband is willing to do that especially this is a film about women and, you know, i mean he's amazing, my husband. >> i love that. that's a true partner. you got a true partner.

>> that's true. >> your father is a director. your mother is a screenwriter. your brother jake we know is an actor. did you lean on them or ask for any advice? >> listen, i looked for gifts, ideas, everywhere. at the new york film festival premiere of my film i was looking around and i was like every single one of the people here has offered me something that's in my film and my brother was amazing. my mother and my father, they -- and my husband, i mean like honestly everyone who's been loving and kind of alive in my life has offered me something that's in my film. >> i love that. sounds like a family film like you guys all together. >> it is not a family film. >> for you i know it's not a family film but the family helped you make this film. >> that's true but it's a film for grown-ups. that's for sure.
