time. download the abc 7 bay area news app on roku, amazon fire, and apple tv. >> a major blow to san francisco's economy as j.p. morgan chase has canceled its in person health conference in the city and replaced it with a virtual one. citing covert concerns. thousands expected to attend the conference scheduled for less than a month from now. j.r. stone spoke with businesses and hotels affected by this decision. >> my first reaction this morning was here we go again. >> manwell torres of alpha graphics reacting to news j.p. morgan chase's health care conference will be held virtually instead of in person in san francisco. a move said to equate to millions of lost revenue for san francisco hotels, restaurants, bars, and stores. the company that went from 17 employees to six over the pandemic would have made guides and handouts like these for thousands of attendees.

no in person conference means no $15,000 deal. >> we were pumped up with it, then we get the heads up. >> those at the union square hotel received two dozen cancellation calls over what was billed as the largest health care symposium in the industry. >> we would have been hundred percent, i would have brought back every employee. >> j.p. morgan chase sent an email saying the health and safety of clients and employees is of the utmost importance given the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, we have made this decision. the bay area council ceo believes while the omicron variant has played into this decision, crime and homelessness likely did. >> it is unacceptable to have people in a wonderful city like san francisco, oakland, or anywhere in the bay area or our state feel unsafe. >> everyone we spoke with holding out hope for other large-scale events.

>> i hope this is an overreaction by one conference. >> it is a setback. not the end of the game. we will be back. >> j.r. stone, abc 7 news. >> the new masking rules went into effect. for the most part, they do not change what you are already doing in most bay area counties. the only counties really impacted our marin county, reverting back to its previous masking mandate, and solano county. this mandate requires all people, regardless of vaccination status, to cover their faces in indoor public places with some exceptions, including gyms, offices, and religious gatherings. >> the ceos of southwestern american airlines told congress masks don't add much protection in an air cabin environment. they say hepa filters captured virtually all airborne contamination. apple is delaying plans to send its employees back to the office

the department of justice will investigate the shooting. >> targeted crimes against the asian american pacific islander community across the bay area have increased since the start of the pandemic. six men are being charged with hate crimes after san jose police arrested them in connection with at least 170 incidents in the past year. dustin dorsey explains how the community came together to help catch these suspects. >> violence, robberies, purse snatching's, and attacks on the asian american community shows the highest it has been in the last two years across the bay area. leaders don't want residents in san jose and little saigon to be fearful this holiday season and beyond. >> while we live in different places and our families came from different countries, we take your safety seriously, and we take it personally. >> backing up their word, police made six arrests in september after an extensive investigation. these men linked to at least 170

incidents of robbery, theft, and burglary that targeted members of the a community. these men targeted more women because they were asian american. >> an attack like this is really an attack against the basic premises of this country that as americans, we are all entitled to equal and fair treatment under the law and treat one another with respect. because of those reasons, we charge it as a hate crime. >> police brass and county and city leaders met with community leaders at grand central mall in san jose to further build the important bond between law enforcement and city residents. the same bond offering them through key witness accounts of the attacks. >> the community being willing to come forward and the courage for the victim to say they are not going to be a victim is absolutely critical. it was the purest example of

collaboration. >> the city of san jose sands together to ensure the safety of people here in little saigon. we will not stand for hate crimes here at all. >> at least one of the suspects facing upwards of 95 years in jail if found guilty. in san jose, dustin dorsey. >> mail theft is at an all-time high during holiday season. thieves are not only going after packages, but targeting mail carriers. the u.s. postal inspection service asking for help from the community. >> letter carriers are being robbed on the street for mail, keys. >> home surveillance video could be an important tool. this camera caught a man breaking into a mail truck last year in san jose. the post office is advising not to approach people in the act. it is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of male thieves or robbers. >> this week is the busiest time of year for the postal service. today was the last day for you

to send packages with standard ground service if you want it to arrive by christmas. abc 7 news reporter ryan curry goes inside the usps oakland distribution center where they are getting ready for the deluge. >> it is the holiday rush right in front of our eyes. packages, letters, and fast-moving conveyor belts. all part of what usps says is the busiest of the year. >> we have to process over 200 million packages this week. looking at letters and packages, over 2.3 billion pieces. >> he is the maintenance manager. he says this facility alone will process over 70,000 packages. >> in anticipation, people want to make sure their relatives and friends will get their presence on time. >> the several thousand square-foot facility is the largest in the bay area. in the front is where cruise are sorting pounds of holiday cards. on sorting machines for packages. that area is for smaller

her work including several books including topics involving race, class, and feminism. she was an alumna of both stanford university and uc santa cruz. in a tweet, uc santa cruz wrote "hooks left an indelible mark for her work over the last decade. she was also a professor at native kentucky. officials say she died after a long illness. >> reddit is making the move to go public. they announced it has confidentially filed for a proposed ipo. it was valued at $10 billion during a private fundraising round earlier this year. it did not disclose what valuation it would go after during its ipo. >> a nonprofit in the south bay doing its part to build a better bay area. especially during this stormy holiday season. tonight was the annual christmas dinner put on by martha's kitchen. as amanda del castillo explains, the cold weather made the focus tonight different. >> a home-cooked meal with a
