33% -- pfizer's vaccine provides 33% protection from infection and 70% protection from hospitalization. a u.s. study of moderna vaccine finds that a booster is critical to increasing protection. that study has not been peer-reviewed. it suggests the vaccine's ability to neutralize omicron was between 49 and 84 times lower compared to earlier variants. >> you are highly protected against severe illness. even if you have had two doses of vaccine, protection against mild illness is not as good. reggie: the south african study found omicron causes less severe symptoms. people reported having a scratchy throat as opposed to a sore throat. kumasi: tim cook is giving them more money for home office equipment. amy hollyfield is at the

headquarters. >> you can't help but just look at this huge building, this large campus. it is still open. it will not be filling up with employees anytime soon. apple told employees they are going to continue working from home, indefinitely. the company is delaying mandatory return to the office and really emphasized the point that they need to settle in. apple will be giving each employee $1000 to buy equipment for their home offices. apple is doing this as the omicron variant of covid raises concerns about a possible winter surge. tim cook told employees in an email that they would be four weeks notice before they are required to return to the office. when they come back, it will only be on mondays, tuesdays and thursdays. wednesdays and fridays, they will work from home. the plan before this

is standard procedure. kumasi: in the south bay, six men are facing robbery and hate crime charges in santa clara county. the suspects are accused of arcing asians in at least 170 crimes in the past year throughout the bay area. this started with the arrest of a 23-year-old oakland man. he was taken into custody on suspicion of purse snatching's and other robberies. san jose police released videos of some of the crimes at the time and investigators have taken five more suspects into custody. prosecutors say the victims were mostly asian women and many were hurt during the robberies. >> an attack like this is really an attack against the basic premises of this country that, as americans, we are all entitled to equal and fair treatment under the law and that we should all treat one another with respect. so, because of those reasons, we charged this as a hate crime. >> 70 crimes took place in santa

clara county. an investigation have linked this particular crew to 100 more robberies around the region. if found guilty, at least one of the suspects is facing upwards of 95 years in prison. >> the u.s. postal inspection service is asking for your help catching thieves who are targeting mail carriers. >> letter carriers are being robbed on the street for mail. for their keys. reggie: home surveillance video could be an important tool. this camera caught a man breaking into a mail truck last year in san jose. the u.s. post office is advising not to approach thieves in the act. they are offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of male thieves or robbers. this week is the busiest time of year for the u.s. postal service. kumasi: abc 7 news reporter ryan curry with inset the -- inside

gather indoors for the holidays. the u.s. government is reporting that america is now up to 118,000 new covid cases per day. that is 45% more than last month. the cdc is urging people to continue wearing masks in public settings and in places where there is substantial transmission of the disease. that is about 90% of all counties in the country. dr. anthony fauci talked to good morning america about how quickly omicron could spread in the u.s. dr. fauci: it has an extraordinary ability to transmit efficiently and spread. very soon, it will be the dominant variant. we have seen that in south africa. we are seeing it in the u.k. i am certain that is what we will see here soon. >> the cdc is reportedly discussing two possible futures. a possible peak in cases in mid-january and a moderate rise after the spring. some encouraging news this morning, april limit area study

reggie: -- it is the last one unless congress chooses to extend it. that is unlikely to happen. the extension was included in president biden's built back better bill but there are not enough votes to pass it before the end of the year. joe manchin is holding up the bill over concerns about paying for it. he wants to illuminate the tax credit which has given eligible families monthly payments of up to $300 per child since july. >> happening in san jose, closing arguments are scheduled to begin in elizabeth holmes fraud trial. the defense attorneys rested their case after she completed her seventh day on the witness stand. federal prosecutors did not have a rebuttal. holmes is accused of deceiving investors and patients about the true capabilities of her blood testing started. both sides told the judge they expect to finish their summations by tomorrow. the liberations are expected to begin after final constructions. reggie: christmas season
