too common in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood prompting mayor london breed to declare a state of emergency here the mayor says more than 700 people died due to drug overdoses last year in san francisco. we are in a crisis supervisor matt haney they need help and this is a statement of the urgency that help is on the way mary ellen carroll executive director of the department of emergency management will spearhead the effort an emergency declar. then allows san francisco to cut through the red tape to obtain the contracts the resources and the personnel that we need to address the crisis conditions in the tenderloin. it's welcomed by community members residents need action. they are going to be excited to see that someone's finally paying attention to the neighborhood to the residents christy. sharella is the director of community organizing and resident voice at the tenderloin community benefit district. she says last week mayor breed met with approximately. 50 tenderloin residents she

listened to their stories about, you know getting harassed or assaulted on the street or hiding from gunfire in the middle of the day at a park the group. so spoke with the mayor's policy advisors about changes, they'd like to see in the neighborhood. i hope that the help that's offered is long-lasting mayor reed says it is the goal is to not let anyone stay out in the streets everything that was said today only enhances our ability to do our jobs enforcement. we have to enforce we have to arrest drug dealers. we have to arrest people better assaulting people in intervention people who live and work here say has been needed for some time in san francisco melanie woodrow abc 7 news governor newsom unveiled a new 255 million dollar public safety proposal designed to battle violent crime across the state and in the bay area the governor announced his plan at chp headquarters in dublin today flanked by state and local officials and members of law enforcement. he wants to create a team dedicated to prosecuting organized retail thefts and

provide police with more tools to down and arrest suspects in those smash and grab robberies attorney general. rob bonte says the plan is a game changer. the real public safety plan provides the doj with additional funding to bolster our existing efforts taking down the perpetrators at the top of these crime rings and shutting down the pip. line of stolen merchandise governor newsom says he also plans to address oakland's request for the use of technology, like cameras and license plate readers on highways and entrance ramps the plan must be approved by the state legislature. there are two new developments about keeping children safe from covid. we want to share with you first. there is a new strategy to keep unv later children in schools the cdc today says testing children who were exposed to the virus has proved to be a safe alternative to pulling them out of the classroom and quarantining them. the tests must be done within a seven-day period after exposure. if exposed children meet a certain criteria and continue to

test negative they can stay in school instead of quarantining at home. the fiser today says it will evaluate a third dose of its covid vaccine currently in trial for toddlers six months to under five years of age. that's two doses of the lower dose vaccine did not result in the same protection as it did in older age groups pfizer is also testing booster shots for children ages 5 through 15. students left for the holidays public schools in san francisco reminded families to have their children tested for covid a day or two before they returned to the classroom on january 3rd abc 7 news senior education reporter liam. melendez is in the newsroom with what parents should know about the testing process leanne. well, i'm a one thing they should know is that testing is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. you can buy a rapid test or you can go to district headquarters to get tested the
