too common in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood prompting mayor london breed to declare a state of emergency here the mayor says more than 700 people died due to drug overdoses last year in san francisco. we are in a crisis supervisor matt haney they need help and this is a statement of the urgency that help is on the way mary ellen carroll executive director of the department of emergency management will spearhead the effort an emergency declar. then allows san francisco to cut through the red tape to obtain the contracts the resources and the personnel that we need to address the crisis conditions in the tenderloin. it's welcomed by community members residents need action. they are going to be excited to see that someone's finally paying attention to the neighborhood to the residents christy. sharella is the director of community organizing and resident voice at the tenderloin community benefit district. she says last week mayor breed met with approximately. 50 tenderloin residents she

listened to their stories about, you know getting harassed or assaulted on the street or hiding from gunfire in the middle of the day at a park the group. so spoke with the mayor's policy advisors about changes, they'd like to see in the neighborhood. i hope that the help that's offered is long-lasting mayor reed says it is the goal is to not let anyone stay out in the streets everything that was said today only enhances our ability to do our jobs enforcement. we have to enforce we have to arrest drug dealers. we have to arrest people better assaulting people in intervention people who live and work here say has been needed for some time in san francisco melanie woodrow abc 7 news governor newsom unveiled a new 255 million dollar public safety proposal designed to battle violent crime across the state and in the bay area the governor announced his plan at chp headquarters in dublin today flanked by state and local officials and members of law enforcement. he wants to create a team dedicated to prosecuting organized retail thefts and

provide police with more tools to down and arrest suspects in those smash and grab robberies attorney general. rob bonte says the plan is a game changer. the real public safety plan provides the doj with additional funding to bolster our existing efforts taking down the perpetrators at the top of these crime rings and shutting down the pip. line of stolen merchandise governor newsom says he also plans to address oakland's request for the use of technology, like cameras and license plate readers on highways and entrance ramps the plan must be approved by the state legislature. there are two new developments about keeping children safe from covid. we want to share with you first. there is a new strategy to keep unv later children in schools the cdc today says testing children who were exposed to the virus has proved to be a safe alternative to pulling them out of the classroom and quarantining them. the tests must be done within a seven-day period after exposure. if exposed children meet a certain criteria and continue to

test negative they can stay in school instead of quarantining at home. the fiser today says it will evaluate a third dose of its covid vaccine currently in trial for toddlers six months to under five years of age. that's two doses of the lower dose vaccine did not result in the same protection as it did in older age groups pfizer is also testing booster shots for children ages 5 through 15. students left for the holidays public schools in san francisco reminded families to have their children tested for covid a day or two before they returned to the classroom on january 3rd abc 7 news senior education reporter liam. melendez is in the newsroom with what parents should know about the testing process leanne. well, i'm a one thing they should know is that testing is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. you can buy a rapid test or you can go to district headquarters to get tested the

school resumes on the last day of school before the winter break students at lao elementary in san francisco. had one last assignment to remember to get lasted before coming back in january. we want to make sure that they test forivth to the negative result so that they can come back to the schools and be safe. and so that we have a safer community seven year old. chloe deville has done it before it's heard but it doesn't make me cry during the holidays many families gather in large groups or even travel those who are flying are urged to test three to five days after returning home another recommendation made by the local health department is to continue wearing masks during the break. and get the covid vaccine chloe has already gotten her first shot. i'd say that it's important because if you don't get it you

thank you so much. well the growing list of athletes testing positive for covid is forcing dramatic action, especially in the nfl the league move tomorrow's raiders browns game to monday after cleveland plays 24 players on its covid reserve list including quarterback baker mayfield the nfl also pushed sunday's games between washington and philadelphia and seattle and the angeles rams to tuesday so far the niners atlanta falcons game sunday is still a go more than 100 players in the league tested positive this week several nba players are out as well. including warriors guard jordan pool. he has entered the league's covid protocol and isn't playing tonight against the boston celtics. the warriors are fully vaccinated and according to coach steve kerr everyone on the team who is eligible received their booster shots. the celtics have three players who are also missing tonight's game because with protocols across the nba at least 20 players are ineligible to play tonight because they had either been exposed or tested positive for the virus.

radio city music hall canceled the remainder of the rockettes christmas spectacular due to covid late today a note was posted on the website stating. we regret that we are unable to continue the christmas spectacular this season due to increasing challenges from the pandemic. the virus is also impacting broadway a number of major musicals, including hamilton and harry potter. the cursed child have canceled performances and today the bay area confirms two new cases of the omicron variant sonoma county confirmed its first case from a fully vaccinated patient who received the booster earlier this month. so that's a breakthrough case. marin county has its first case from leave vaccinated patient with no booster both recently traveled domestically in the us. there are five bay area counties with confirmed omicron cases alameda, san francisco, santa clara and now marin and sonoma today evidence of omicron was discovered in the wastewater in contra, costa county. the omicron variant has local

health care professionals concerned especially as more people plan to travel abc 7 news reporter zach fuentes. spoke with the south bay doctor who says the next few weeks will be critical to navigating what he says is the most problematic variant yet. this is the moment even though we've been stressed. this is the moment to tighten our our efforts the omicron variant arrived just in time for one of the busiest travel weekends and weeks of the year, dr. jorge salinas hospital epidemiologist at stanford university says the risks of the variant have him encouraging people to reconsider traveling this holiday season it transmits so well. that it produces explosive outbreaks. when it enters a gathering it can infect everybody in the government though. he's discouraging travel. he says if you have to gather there are safer ways to go about it including testing beforehand and making sure your vaccinated boosted and that the others you'll be with are too if you're gonna gather in an indoor space try to do it in a

in hollywood, this would be the end. but our here, we are just getting started. introducing the all-new nissan frontier. tonight a warning from fire officials in the east bay that can help all of us as the temperatures drop beware of carbon monoxide poisoning it claimed the life of one woman and sent three children to the hospital abc 7 news reporter ryan curry went to the neighborhood and has more on thursday night emergency crews went to vincent street for a welfare check on a pittsburgh home. once they got there they found five people exposed to carbon monoxide one woman is dead and four others. and three children were taken to the hospital right over there over my shoulder is where one neighbor says that home had the carbon monoxide leak. she says when she got back from work her whole neighborhood was blocked off as police try to investigate what happened the possible cause of the exposure a

prison though. his plea deal indicates a lighter sentence. the case is part of a larger federal investigation targeting public corruption in san francisco to date 12 people three corporate entities and multiple city contractors and facilitators been charged closing arguments. wrapped up in the trial of theronos founder elizabeth holmes and the jury is now receiving instructions homes faces that nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and connection with the failed blood testing startup prosecutors have said she knowingly misled investors while the defense has maintained. she didn't mislead anyone if convicted homes could face up to 20 years in prison. google is being investigated by the state over its treatment of black female employees. that's according to a report from reuters out tonight. the report says the is looking at how the company reacted after the workers made allegations of harassment and discrimination. google tells reuters. it is focused on having an inclusive workplace and will investigate any concerns the 8

build a better bay area during the holiday season is to teach kids to give back. it's never too early to start couple weeks ago. i love my daughter pick out toys to buy the letter add them them to a toys for tots donation. could be that easy, but i want to find some other ways to get her involved in volunteerism. so i turned to south bay superteacher superteacher susan for some ideas. here are seven easy ways for your child to give back during the holidays. idea number one is is is
