quarter of a mile in fairfield and santa rosa and can't see anything at all in nevado. be careful out there. 47 in union city. look at 34 in fremont and mountain view as well as santa rosa and temperatures will continue to drop the next few hours. we're certainly colder, 3-7 degrees colder than yesterday at this time. lingering fog. temperatures in the upper 40's and 50's elsewhere. we talk about a cool second half of the weekend and multiple rounds of rain returning, liz, for next week and beyond coming up. liz: let's get to the latest covid developments. two of the most populated regions are reportingle day case counts. new york state saw 27,000, the

most of any day during the pandemic. l.a. recorded more than 3200 cases and the highest in the city for nearly four months. a federal appeals court reinstated the biden administration's vaccine mandate. the arkansas attorney general has already said she intends to appeal to the u.s. supreme court. the concern of omicron is increasing as families are getting ready to celebrate christmas one week away. we spoke to the bay doctors. >> during the pandemic they informed us and now discussing the plans for the holidays. are you feeling comfortable when it comes to traveling? >> we're not going to travel. we have family members older and are at risk and in part because

we want to be safe. >> i still plan on visiting my mom who lives in new york. i haven't seen her for a long time. i'm not letting the fear of omicron disrupt my plans. i'm vaccinated and boosted. >> dr. gandi is traveling to see her parents with her 13 and 11-year-old sons and strategizing airplane ventilation. >> the one not fully vaccinated, he had his first dose, we always put him in the middle and turn his vent on above him because he was the one that couldn't get vaccinate the until november 4. >> the three doctors believe you should be safe to valve if fully vaccinated and boosted and don't have any pre-existing health conditions. please remember the situation we're in. the variant is very transmissible and could be less severe. >> the early data shows the omicron variant is four times transmissible than the delta

variant but with vaccination numbers increasing this doctor believes -- >> it might an window period and there will be a bunch of spiking occurring after christmas. and then that may not go down until the end of january or february. >> according to experts if you're in a room where everyone is vaccinated and boosted, you have the chance of -- cut the chance of being infected by 95%. but this stanford epidemiologist is not convinced this is the best time to travel. >> it transmits so well it produces explosive outbreaks. when it enters a gathering it can affect everybody in the gathering. >> in dr. caldwell's case he's getting his two sons coming from college who also are fully vaccinated tested, something these three doctors recommend when gathering with elderly family members. >> certainly before any family gathering that we have. >> in san francisco, abc 7 news. liz: the students begin their winter break, the school

districts and c.d.c. are reminding families about the importance of testing. the c.d.c. said testing children who were exposed to the virus has proved to be a safe alternative than just pulling them out of the classroom and quarantining them. in the bay area, many school districts have come up with plans to ensure students can get tested before classes resume in january. for san francisco students, testing will be offered at school district headquarters on january 2 and 3. >> they test to make sure they're negative so they can come back to the schools to be safe so we have a safer community. liz: pfizer will test a third dose currently in testing for toddlers 6 months to 5 years of age. doctors found a two dose regiment isn't as effective as it is in older children. if you have questions about covid-19 vaccines ask our vaccine team. just head to

abc7news.com/vaccine and click on the big blue box. moving on now, new developments, the family of mario gonzalez who died earlier this year with this incident with alameda police are now suing the officers involved. abc 7 news reporter tim john spoke with an attorney representing gonzalez's son. the family says they want not only justice but reform. >> mario gonzalez who died earlier this year filed a lawsuit against the officers involved and the city of alameda, being filed on behalf of his 5-year-old son and comes one week after the coroner's office ruled his death a homicide and the event took place in april when three police officers tried to arrest him and thought he was under the influence and might have been involved in theft. >> they got on top of him with their weight. >> little mario has just been missing his father terribly.

he still asks his mother why his papi doesn't wake up. >> they're asking for financial payment to be paid to his family and aside from the lawsuit they're calling for the alameda county district attorney to bring criminal charges against the officers involved as well as reforms including requiring all law enforcement to undergo crisis intervention team training. >> which helps officers recognize when a situation is not a law enforcement situation and that is more of a mental or behavioral health situation. >> similar calls have grown louder since gonzaga's death and on thursday the city of alameda launched the pilot program for the care team, a nonpolice alternative for certain cases. >> the hope is we make contact in the street and get them to help in the after care they're needed and get them on a better pathway to success. >> the three officers involved in the incident are currently on administrative leave.

tim johns. liz: a mom accused of hosting drunken sex parties tries to get out of jail the second time. shannon o'connor was denied bail when she was arrested. according to her media partners the mercury news, she's not entered a plea to 39 criminal counts. if convicted she does face up to 20 years in prison. and in court yesterday her lawyer said he will file a motion for bail. that hearing is set for january 18. today following u.s. soldiers will be remembered with holiday wreaths. it's part of the wreaths across america. the cemetery at the prosidio will be decorated with wreaths and starts at 11:00 this morning. if waking up in san omameh county, you want to bundle up before going outside, a freeze

warning is in effect until tomorrow morning and is selected to be the coldest of the weekend and sonoma county is providing housing on a first come first serve basis. locations include the reach for home shelter at st. paul's episcopal church at heelsburg and redwood at gospel mission and the dream wood emergency shelter both in santa rosa. the city of san jose has opened overnight warming shelters for unhoused residents as temperatures drop there as well located at evergreen branch library on aborn road and community center on center road. the evergreen library will accept walk-ins this weekend and both centers operate on a referral basis through the end of april. lisa, it really is cold out there this weekend. lisa: it is freezing at livermore at 32 degrees and add in the fog you could have

july of last year and july of this year. the bay area and l.a. county lost the most people. about 64,000 people left the bay area. this is the first time that both areas lost population in the same year. many blame the state's high cost the living and officials blame high cost of birth rates, migration and increased coronavirus deaths. san francisco mayor london breed declared a state state of emergency in the tenderloin and safety is what we focus on to build a better bay area. the emergency declaration will allow the city to respond to the drug overdose crisis. melanie woodrow has the details and reaction from the community. >> images like these have become too common in the neighborhood prompting london breed to declare a state of emergency here and more than 700 people died due to drug overdoses last year in san francisco.

>> we are in a crisis. >> they need help and this is a statement of the urgency that's on the way. the director of emergency management will spearhead the effort. >> a emergency declaration allows san francisco to cut through the red tape and obtain the contracts and resources and personnel we need to address the crisis conditions in the tenderloin. >> it's welcomed by community members. >> residents need action and they're excited to see somebody is paying attention to the residents. >> christy is the director of community organizing and resident voice at the tenderloin community benefit district and says last week mayor breed met with approximate 50 tenderloin residents. >> she listened to their stories about getting harassed or assaulted on the streets or hiding from gunfire in the middle of the day at a park. >> the group spoke with the mayor's policy advisers about changes they'd like to see in the neighborhood.

>> they hope the help that's offered is long lasting. >> mayor breed says it is. >> the goal is to not let anyone stay out in the streets. >> everything that was said today only enhances our ability to do our jobs. enforcement, we have to enforce. we have to arrest drug dealers and have to arrest people assaulting people. >> intervention, people who live and work here say has been needed for some time in san francisco. melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> governor newsome announced his own safety proposal yesterday, the $255 million plan would create a team focused on stopping organized retail heft that's plagued the bay area and other parts of california. >> you break a window, you smash and grab, you take other people's property, that's wrong, period, full stop. period. no justification for that. >> funding would provide more resources to the state department of justice to go after the ringleaders who are organizing the smash and grab robberies and would expand the

highway patrol's presence across the state to investigate the thefts. but as abc 7 news insider explains, the funding will take a while to approve. >> the governor's funding, a lot of that has to go through the state legislature and will mean months down the line when they put together the new budgeting. liz: something else the legislature needs to approve is the idea to use cameras on the ramps and in the city and governor newsome says it's something he plans to address. the trial of elizabeth holmes is now in the hands of the jury, deliberations begin monday, holmes faces nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with the failed blood testing startup. prosecutors said she knowingly misled the investors though her attorney said she didn't mislead anyone and if convicted could face 20 years of prison. in the east bay, a blood

breakfast restaurant in lafayette closed its doors after 46 years in business. mili's kitchen on oak hill road was named after the original owner. the current owner taped a note to the door saying with great sadness, mili's has decided to retire and will be remembered for its coffee cake, french toast and giant sized portions. in the south bay this weekend, curtains up. a special audience was invited to preview the san jose nutcracker finally back after two years. abc 7 news reporter was there. >> a beloved holiday show with a san jose twist. on friday a special performance of the san jose nutcracker brought magic to the california theater. from the live orchestra to dancer and designers and more, new ballet's official performance came just in time for the holidays. >> all of us involved in the theater, none of us have done what we loved to do for almost two years now. >> the artistic director said it

marks the first time new ballet is taking place at the restored theater, a special occasion for a very special audience. 200 families were given the opportunity to preview friday's show at no cost. >> i think the opportunity is ours. we are so excited to invite into the audience today local families, kids from local elementary schools in downtown san jose and also families affected with sensory and learning disabilities. >> the event was hosted by the councilman who represents the downtown neighborhoods. >> so many of our youth in san jose don't get to take advantage of theater performances here in the california theater so for us to be able to host them was really terrific and give them a little bit of exposure of the theater in this historic venue as well. >> the show gave this woman's family a reason to reunite. >> it brings us all together especially since we haven't seen our god parents in a while. so it kind of brings us more as a family together.

>> for lopez, family is everything and friday's preview offered her family an experience they won't soon forget. >> the music especially and the performance just amazing in every kind of way. able to tell a story without seeing anything. >> in san jose, abc 7 news. liz: so good to see that back. lisa, certainly feels like christmas, the nutcracker, the weather. lisa: that's right and we have another round of some pretty interesting weather headed our way after a dry weekend. as we head outside right now and look at live doppler 7, you notice the storm track is to the north of us but also, you are probably noticing that tully fog in the central valley and is an issue from the east bay to north bay as well and we'll go in closer and take a look at the visibility in miles and to a quarter of a mile in fairfield and santa rosa and very hard to see anything at all, three miles

in livermore and half a mile in concord and the rest of the bay not doing too bad but the cold temperatures, 33 in pleasantton and san ramone and 41 in blackhawk. as we look at mountain view and livermore at freezing right now. 44 san francisco and no matter with where you go this morning, it's cold, potentially foggy and going to be chilly right on through the afternoon. there's a look at emeryville, nice and bright out there and cold mornings with areas of frost and fog for the weekend and then we have sunshine mixed in with a few high clouds for this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon and rainy days return next week through christmas and includes christmas eve. it's a long way out there, it's hard to pinpoint the actual rainy days and the snow levels but as we go through the weekend you'll notice that at 3:00 this afternoon we have partly cloudy skies into your sunday afternoon, a few more clouds and then get into some moisture

offshore here allowing for maybe a few areas of sprinkles but overall, monday stays dry so the onset of the first rain looks to be early on tuesday. here we are 4:00 on monday, notice the rain. offshore there, 10:00 monday getting going in the north bay but the rest of the bay area is dry. more likely we'll get wet tuesday morning for the tuesday morning commute and then it looks like heavier rain at times as we go through next week. so in terms of amounts, it's looking pretty aggressive. now, there is a low that's going to set up offshore and depending where it sets up will make a huge difference. this is overplayed perhaps in the south bay with that rain shadow effect but we're looking at anywhere from 3-4 1/2 inches in the north bay and you see widespread amounts of three inches across the bay area but still several days out. if we look in the mountains, it looks pretty aggressive as well but this, too, could change

because we could see initially a rain-snow mix. snow levels starting ohi uortunl feet of snow we have now and then look what's forecast once again just numbers that are mind-boggling. 52 today over in fremont with partly cloudy skies and look for 353 in san jose. it's a cool afternoon and the accuweather seven-day forecast, dry this weekend and cold mornings with that fog and then as we look into the week ahead before christmas we have a chance of showers late on monday, level 2 on tuesday and at this point it looks like light activity on and off throughout the week but is apt to change, liz and we have a thing about cutoff lows and they're very uncertain where they set up and is going to really help us project the rainfall amounts so be sure to check back. liz: thanks, lisa. shop local, the holiday street

get towards 11, only in the low 40's for antioch and livermore, mid 40's and in the afternoon upper 40's to near 50 and chilly and partly cloudy skies. we'll look at another dry but cold start to sunday. and we're going to try to time out the rain for you when we see you next. liz? liz: thank you. this morning a warning from fire officials in the east bay as the temperatures drop but beware of carbon monoxide poisoning and claimed one life and sent three other to the hospital. we have the details in the neighborhood. >> on thursday night, emergency crews went to vincent street for a welfare check on a pittsburgh home. once they got there, they found five people exposed to carbon monoxide. one woman dead and four others, a man and three children were taken to the hospital. >> right over there over my shoulder is where one neighbor says that home had the carbon monoxide leak. she says when she got back from work her whole neighborhood was blocked off as police try to investigate what happened.

>> the possible cause of the exposure, a heater. >> in this case winter heating, weather looks like it's the culprit, carbon monoxide poisoning. >> steve hill with fire protection said carbon monoxide poisoning is too common around the went earth. 10,000 people die each year due to carbon monoxide exposure and something he says is entirely avoidable. >> every single home and every level on every single home should have a working and regularly tested carbon monoxide detector. that's the silver bullet that can protect us from these tragic incidents. >> you can't smell it or see it but it is deadly. the winter makes the risk for carbon monoxide poisoning higher, as the temperature gets colder, more people are using things to stay warm. >> any thing that burns any kind of fuel are producing carbon monoxide so it's important they be well maintained and used properly according to the manufacturer's instructions. if you haven't done so already now is a good time to check your monitor. >> almost exclusively it

and omicron variants, the omicron strain reportedly doubling every 2-3 days. >> for the unvaccinated, you're looking at a winter of severe illness and death for yourselves, your families, and in the hospitals you may soon overwhelm. >> the virus having a big impact on sports, several nfl and nhl games are being postponed and dozens of nba players are on covid lists. that's as a new study not yet peer reviewed finds omicron could spread up to three times faster than delta and that the risk of being reinfected with omicron is more than five times higher than with delta. >> the minute you walk outside, you're taking some risk so you need to do everything you can to mitigate that risk. >> omicron now detected in at least 42 states is predicted to eclipse delta within weeks. new york state breaking a single day record for new infections. over 21,000 and with the holidays approaching, hundreds are lining up to get tested and

with the san jose sharks to organize this event. in marin city, the organization of performing stars is asking for donations for its annual holiday toy giveaway and looks for toys and books for infants to 11-year-olds or financial donations for gift cards for 1-17-year-olds. drop off locations are listed on your screen and can you donate online at performing stars. org/donate now. the toy give away will be held thursday. today in san francisco more than 1,000 children will get a toy for the holidays, part of the second annual chinatown winter wonderland. the event focuses on serving underprivileged children in the community. there will be a bounce house cookie decorating and even falling snow. kind he's hospital will be offering covid vaccinations to kids ages 5-11 as well as booster shots for adults. the festivities run from 10:00 to 4:30. all right. lisa, let's get a check outside, whatever you're doing today, bring a jacket. lisa: you think it's cold here,

i'm larry beil. liz: bay area residents are headed to sierra resorts eager to start their holiday around several feet of snow. skis, snowboards and boots were going fast at san jose. this is the second place where one family stopped after their usual go-to rental shop ran out of inventory. >> we didn't ski last winter, so been two whole years since last time we go anywhere, actually. liz: what should you expect if headed to the mountains? first it will be very busy and a lot of it says has to do with the pandemic. >> more people interested in outdoor recreation and think it's a lot because a lot of people discovered it last year or were able to be home and said hey, what do i want to do and they got outside. liz: one important piece of advice is check the resort's covid policies. you may need proof of vaccination to be indoors.
