8:56 am
yourself and your family healthy. i'm joined today on the "california spotlight" by james scullary of covered california, who's here to tell us all about covered ca and the financial help that's on offer to lower the cost of name-brand health insurance. james, always good to see you and chat with you. thanks for joining us. >> hey, thank you for having me, karl. good to see you, too. >> so, it's that time of the year, james. anyone who needs health insurance, now is the time to sign up. tell us how covered ca can help. >> well, open enrollment is under way right now. so, if you need health insurance, or if you have coverage directly through a health-insurance company, where you're paying the whole bill, now is the time to see how affordable coverage can be through covered california. there's more financial help than ever before available. so, you can get comprehensive coverage for less than $100 a month, less than $10 a month, or maybe even at no cost. >> okay, so, how do people get these kind of savings? how does that all work? >> well, you know, most people get their health-insurance coverage through their employer, where they pay a little bit and their employer pays the larger share. but if you're a part-time
8:57 am
employee, or if you're a self-employed business owner, a freelancer, or a contractor, you don't have that option. at least you didn't until the affordable care act came along. the law provides financial help to people based on their income to help them with their health-coverage costs and bring the cost of that coverage within reach. >> okay, so, james, i've read that california has reduced the rate of uninsured by more than any state in the nation, and covered california has record enrollment right now. but there is still more work to be done, isn't there? >> yeah, that's right. we've come a long way, but there is still more to do because we estimate there's about 1.1 million californians out there who don't have health insurance, but they are eligible for financial help. and that's too many people out there who don't have the protection and peace of mind that comes with quality coverage. so, thanks to the american rescue plan, which is the federal response to the pandemic, there's more money available to help those people. and we think that more than 900,000 of those 1.1 million could get coverage at no cost.
8:58 am
>> now, you mentioned earlier that, you know, a lot of people get their health insurance through their employers. you know, they're covered, big-name brands through their employers. but covered california can still help, even if you've got that, can't they? >> well, they can help you if you get your coverage directly through your insurance company. so, if you didn't have employer-sponsored coverage as an option, and you got covered directly from blue shield or kaiser or health net, you're paying the entire premium on your own. covered california is the only place you can go to see if you're eligible for financial help. so, in many cases, people can switch from direct coverage to covered california. they can end up with the same carrier, same doctors, same hospitals, and get financial help. and what we've been seeing is, on average, people in that situation are saving about $800 a month. so, that's almost $10,000 a year in savings for roughly the equivalent of the same plan. >> yeah, that's remarkable. so, how do people find out if
8:59 am
they're eligible? >> well, we got you covered in every way. so, you can start at coveredca.com, our website. right there on the front page, you just need to enter a few pieces of information -- your zip code, your household income, and the ages and the number of people who need coverage. and you'll find out within seconds whether or not you're eligible for financial help and what plans are available in your area. you can call us at 800-300-1506. or you can sit down with one of our thousands of certified insurance agents across the state. >> so, as you said, james, you really do have us covered across all bases. deadlines -- we got to talk deadlines, because i know that's important, right? >> yeah, and let me give you two. first, if you want your coverage to begin at the earliest possible time, then you need to sign up by december 31st. that way, your coverage can start on january 1st. you can ring in the new year with some peace of mind. however, if you can't make it then, open enrollment does last all the way through january 31st. >> there you go. james scullary from
