there. visibility was at an eighth of a mile. elsewhere not as bad but it is gray much everywhere but here. temperatures in the mid 40's in san francisco, 38 in san jose, 48 at half moon bay. 40 in santa rosa. 37 in livermore. santa cruz with cloud cover and temperatures staying in the 40's right on through most of the morning and by the afternoon, breaking out into partly cloudy skies around the east and south bay for some low to mid 50's, but only in the 40's up in the north and east bay valleys. we'll talk about the cloudy start to your work week and the rainy tuesday morning commute and where we will see the heaviest rain for the holiday week. liz: with christmas less than a week away, bay area shoppers are hitting the stores this weekend to try and find some last-minute

items. as tim johns tells us, it was more than just gifts on people's minds. tim: at the holiday shopping season enters the final stretch, shoppers are hitting the stores all around the bay area. one of the most popular spots is the village. >> i found it more busy than it was last year. tim: while some bought many items. >> i'm so excited. i got some sparkly sweaters. tim: the others, not so much. >> i don't have a plan of what i'm going to get. i just here -- i'm just here trying to find stuff. tim: after a hard season last year, many retailers say they are happy to see shoppers at it again. >> it has been bananas. today has just been ongoing traffic back and forth. tim: despite not having the restrictions of 20/20, many shoppers told us the new omicron variant was still on their minds. >> i have all the grandparents

and people i want to look out for. tim: one of the season's hottest items are at home covid-19 tests. >> you get together with people, you don't know where they were, and you just want to have it on hand. tim: covid isn't the only factor. some tell us the prices are playing a role. >> in comparison to years past, it is at least 10% to 15% higher. tim: despite the challenges this holiday season may bring, any say they are looking forward to spending time with their loved ones. >> we are all doing what we can to stay healthy and safe but at the end of the day, christmas, i have to be with my family. liz: a big night in san francisco as the castro theatre rolled up the green carpet for the u.s. premiere of matrix resurrections. all the stars were there, including kiana reeves. luz pena spoke to him along with

other familiar faces. luz: roll out the green carpet and look up. green lights. san francisco went green to honor the premier of the anticipated matrix resurrections movie. >> san francisco brings a lot of memories. luz: even the mayor had a short cameo on the film. >> it's my dream to have the matrix and other hollywood films come to san francisco film. luz: the top-secret filming began in 2020 in san francisco, under the codename project ice cream. >> right before the pandemic, we got so lucky because we actually wrapped as the world was shutting down. luz: back in 2020, images of keanu reeves jumping off of a 46 story building 19 times went viral. what would you say was the highlight of shooting in san francisco? >> walking the streets, the light.

leaping off of that building. that was a pretty big highlight. luz: one of his biggest fans is our very own former giants player, andre pentz. are you inviting him to the ballpark? >> of course. >> i'm pretty sure there is an open invitation at all times. luz: sharing how the matrix inspired him throughout his career. >> i threw all of my energy into mimicking morpheus's posture. this is the first time i ever mentioned that to anybody. luz: keanu had a message for pentz after the invitation. >> thanks, man. luz: the movie is about bringing people back together. >> i brought two characters back to life. luz: this film also brought together a diverse cast. >> as a latina to be a part of this? >> i think every production should look like the world. luz: now that the fourth is

coming out, we had to ask. will there be a fifth matrix? >> i can't say. liz: and san fra f has matrix mania. numerous landmarks turned green for the premier. it wasn't just the castro theater. city hall lit up in green, even san francisco international airport all lit up in matrix screen. moving on, more than 1000 children in san francisco now have a toy for the holidays, part of the second annual chinatown winter wonderland. the event serves underprivileged kids in the community. first responders from the san francisco fire department shared the spirit and along with that falling snow there were train rides along grant avenue in the heart of chinatown, and to make sure everybody is safe for the holidays, chinese hospitals also offered covid vaccinations to kids ages five to 11 as well as booster shots.

>> chinese hospital has been focusing on creating walk-in clinics, also participating on local events so people can walk up to our tents and get it. liz: the hospital has plenty of vaccines available for children and adults. on the peninsula, hundreds of san mateo county families received help for the holidays. 1700 children got brand-new and 600 households were given $100 visa gift cards. congresswoman jackie spear helped out at the event, and she spread the word about staying safe from covid over the holidays. >> stay masked, stay six feet apart and get your booster. and you will be safe. if you notice, we all have our masks on, and all the people in their cars have masks on. liz: samaritan house has already given 3000 target gift cards through their holiday program.

marshal after a man was stabbed. officials opened the gate at the venues to the concertgoers could disperse. lapd told our sister station, that a stabbing victim was hospitalized in unknown condition. reports that the wounded individual was a performer at the mesic festival have not been confirmed. dozens of artists had been scheduled to perform on the concert's three stages including snoop dogg, $.50, ice cube and -- no arrests have been made. preventing wildfires is one of the components of the federal infrastructure investment and jobs act. president biden signed into law last month and house speaker nancy pelosi and other lawmakers toured one bay area neighborhood yesterday, a neighborhood that was devastated by wildfire four years ago. investors -- officials say investments may prevent future tragedies.

>> this was santa ground zero for the tubs wildfire. 3000 homes lost across the city. more than 1000 of them right here in this neighborhood. the catastrophic loss is still hard to fathom. >> we lost lives, businesses, livelihoods, homes. >> north bay congressman mike thompson and house speaker nancy pelosi toured the part where many homes have been rebuilt. >> you have suffered so much. you came together so beautifully. you listened to each other, in terms of how to build back better. >> pelosi speaking to fire survivors at this news conference, touting the passage of the infrastructure investment and jobs act, providing $1.2 trillion in funding for jobs, and wildfire prevention in california. >> we can improve our

infrastructure, our preparedness, and these things can help prevent the kind of catastrophic damage we live through in 2017. >> a wildfire survivor, lisa is still bit -- still building her home. she says preventing future wildfires is crucial. >> we love our family but we don't want any more fire survivors to have to join us. >> the new funding could pay for new engines, fire prevention technology and fire stations. >> for the city, we are looking at things like eating three fire stations within the urban interface so there is potential funding for that. we need a fire station in an underserved area that has been marginalized for quite a long time in roseland. >> the investments can't guarantee more wildfires won't happen, but to tools can keep resilient communities safer and better protected. liz: the salvation army is hard at work in the bay area, helping

thousands of families make sure this holiday season is a 1. the san francisco chapter is handing out toys and holiday cheer as part of their angel tree program. 2000 children will receive a big bag of gifts. families did have to preregister to receive the holiday goodies. the salvation army says this past year has been an especially tough one for many. >> we are seeing an increase in the number of people asking for help, and unfortunately we are seeing a decrease in the number of donations. i think there are a lot of issues with inflation and the pandemic. there has been a lot of concern about crime. liz: here in the bay area, the salvation army says there are fewer donations coming in through the red kettles near busy shopping centers. they are trying to get the word out that they need more donations. happening today, a christmas tree giveaway for people living in bayview or hunters point

area. every year, the guardsmen sell christmas trees to help at risk youth. today's giveaway will be in the bay view on jennings street starting at 1:00 this afternoon. there will be another giveaway tomorrow in the fillmore. the urgent threat posed by climate change is driving an intense search for solutions. spencer christian has a look at some that are homegrown. spencer: if you want to see the future of climate sustainable architecture, you can look under this floating lab in san francisco bay, or maybe examine the oyster friendly panels embedded in this marsh, or perhaps like me, you can visit the california college of the arts, where the floating lab and oyster project were engineered, and where architecture students are now building on what they have learned. >> like using wing -- like using locally sourced materials to enrich our local habitats. spencer: the current student

projects were assigned by a professor with many incorporating native dogwood used by indigenous bay area peoples. several student created prototypes have been placed under the college's floating research platform near the port of oakland. to learn more about the sea life they might support. other uses expanded from there. >> my challenge was what could you designed with this material that is easily sourced with the seed of your design going to the water as something that could begin to take on life above or below water that they care about. spencer: like the floating lab and oyster platforms, the idea is to create architecture that supports native organisms. engineered habitats that help structures like buildings, levies and seawalls adapt to climate change. like the environment itself, the concepts are broad and diverse. >> my idea is to make a bunch of little nests that become an ecosystem. >> for my project, i want to

explore the creation of a bio plastic. it would be paneling. spencer: what inspired you, all of you, to focus on this particular project? >> we all they be subconsciously dug into what we care about and then tackled that and i think it comes from the idea of hope. spencer: over the years, students from california college of the arts have competed in many design competitions, producing the kinds of ideas that are already funding their way to real-life projects from parks to levees to urban seawalls and ultimately turning their education into action. >> they are architecture students, they know the impact of their profession on the environment. spencer: and potentially on their future. liz: that was spencer christian reporting. the design class and those projects you saw are part of the college's architectural ecology lab which fosters collaborations between designers, researchers and benefactors.

ok lisa, it is the last weekend before christmas. people are going to be busy shopping today. at least there is no rain yet, but you have to bring your work home. lisa: i was talking to people on the east coast and they said you are colder than we are and we have been well below average, about eight to nine degrees below average. we will have some rain on top of that in then by the end of the week, it is going to get cold around here. that will thin out our rain totals but that could mean some low snow levels. we will back off a little bit on the predictions, not too much. we have a lot of sierra snow, gusty wind and messy travel. live doppler 7 showing you we are shrouded in clouds and the fog is pretty bad, from san jose, send carlos, overthrew livermore. elsewhere it is just gray out there but there are pockets of clearing taking place already. here is a look at the

exploratorium camera. 44 san francisco, 44 in oakland. morgan hill, the typical cool spot. looking at temperatures from the low 40's for most of you in the north bay out towards the east bay. not as cold as it was but we will not warm up that much in the cloud cover will be slow to clear. we will only have pockets of sun out there. sfo, what a busy place. partly cloudy skies for you in the east bay, the south bay, and looking at a chance for rain coming in late on monday. maybe some sprinkles and light drizzle between now and the time of the cold front arrival, tuesday morning. here is a look at sunday. notice the clouds are slow to part. you can see the east bay looking at a little bit of brighter conditions, but as we get into late afternoon, it is kind of

cloudy out there. stopping this early monday morning, we just have a few spotty showers. the bulk of the day is dry. cloudy skies into the morning hours, the afternoon and that cold front sits offshore until the overnight hours. here we are into early tuesday morning, that morning commute is looking soggy with heavy downpours into tuesday morning, gusty wind, it will overspread the entire bay area and we will look at this not leaving us until late in the day. even the afternoon commute will have some spotty light rain showers and maybe some moderate rain. a look at 11:00 on tuesday. this is the first in a series of rain that will come through the bay area. the focus will be in the north bay with an inch and a half to two inches. here is the tuesday system. look what happens on wednesday. we are still wet with mountain snow.

senator joe manchin says he is a no on the bill back better package. the west virginia democrat says he has worked as diligently as possible with his colleagues to determine the best path forward, despite his serious reservations. manchin says he cannot take the risk of reshaping society that leaves the country more vulnerable to the threats we face. he says he will continue working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address the needs of all americans and do so in a way that does not risk security and way of life. the white house just released a response. jen psaki said senator manchin pledged repeatedly to finalize on the bill after negotiating in good faith. she says just as senator manchin reversed position, we will press him to see if you will honor his prior commitments and be true to

his word. as we approach the holidays, the cdc predicts the u.s. will see one million new covid cases the week of christmas. president biden will speak to the country about the omicron variant tuesday. abc news reporter marcus moore has the details. marcus: less than a week before christmas, deja vu in the u.s., facing another unrelenting surge of covid cases. at the end of october, the nation was averaging about 64,000 new cases. soaring demand for testing nationwide. long lines at an at-home test giveaway in philadelphia. some stores nationwide are giving a limit on the amount of tests that can be purchased. >> as we go into the holiday season, testing is really important so people can gather safely. marcus: record-breaking covid numbers reported in new york, the governor's office saying nearly 22,000 positive cases within a 24 period. wisconsin has one of the highest

case rates in the country, seeing a testing surge in front of the holidays. >> what is going on in wisconsin, we will get tested now and take a rapid test before we leave monday. marcus: ohio financing it will bring in the national guard, hospital once again feeling the strain as well. doctors at houston methodist hospital say almost half of all patients being treated there are infected with omicron variant. that variants are to become the dominant variant in the country, health officials warning it could be more transmissible than delta. >> it creates so many more cases that you get more hospitalizations and more deaths. it is really going to hurt our health care system. marcus: no sector of the economy or society is immune. >> where is everybody? >> haven't you heard? >> what come about that thing going around? >> yeah, covid. marcus: the show playing older

skits. and the sports world also taking a hit. both the nfl and nhl postponing games come along with u.c.l.a.'s men's and women's basketball teams canceling their games because of covid. in the nba, kevin durant becoming the 8th brooklyn nets player to enter health and safety protocols. >> there is very much a sense we have been here before, but health officials say we have more tools in the fight to stop the spread they hope people will come to testing sites like here at dodger stadium and get vaccinated. liz: this morning on "this week," dr. fauci says omicron is spreading rapidly across the country, but he says if you are vaccinated, should feel comfortable traveling for the holidays. >> if you are vaccinated and boosted and are prudent when you travel to be wearing a mask all the time -- you have to be

wearing a mask on a plane. do not do things like go to gatherings where there are people who you do not know what their vaccination status is. if you do these things, i do believe that you can feel quite comfortable with a family setting, the dinners and gatherings around the holiday season. liz: dr. fauci says you can also go the extra step of getting tested before you go to somebody's house. the last kmart in california is closing today. it is located in grass valley. the nevada county store is the final kmart on the west coast. everything there is for sale, even the fixtures. locals say the store will be missed. >> the poor kmart, finished come over with. >> i used to work here, so i got to come by and say goodbye. it is kind of -- a sweet and sad

moment at the same time. liz: kmart began as a dime store in detroit. it eventually grew to nearly 25,000 stores across the country. in 2002, k-mart filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. there are only a few dozen k-marts left in the u.s. this one in grass valley is now set to become a target store. this holidays season -- this holiday season's shipping crunch is underway. we are live at a fedex distribution center and ideas to avoid crowds as you snatch up the gifts. >> whether the content are magic mixy's cauldron, squishmallows or games, carriers are working around-the-clock the clock to deliver packages on time. >> this weekend will be the last time to get stuff in priority mail and still get it to you. >> more than 90% of packages are

end zone. the colts lead 20-0 after 3. the colts need a closed -- down to shut it out. the colts win 27-17. that is your look at sports. liz: and let's get a check of the forecast now. it will be a messy week. a lot of people traveling, then all the rain. lisa: that is right. but the latest forecast models are consistent with the wet week but less so on the intensity. that is a little bit of good news. we need the rain, but we do not want a level three and heavy downpours throughout the entire week this will just be a set up where we see waves of rain visit us. an area of low pressure taps into sub tropical moisture throughout the week starting tuesday. right now, it is about fog from the peninsula and south bay, anywhere from half a mile to redwood city in san jose, although there is hazy sunshine mixed in. a look at our exploratorium

camera, where you can see it is gray. temperatures mildest here in the mid 40's. elsewhere, mid to upper 30's. san jose finally up to 36. marin county, another chilly day up through sonoma and napa. low 40's. upper 30's for livermore. here is an interesting shot. pretty gray out there. foggy and chilly throughout the morning. cloudy skies for some of you. chance of rain and sprinkles comes into play monday. the main event, that level two system, pretty moderate one. it will arrive tuesday morning. a look at noon time where we are holding onto the clouds in the north bay. east bay and south bay writer. by 5:30, still partly cloudy. showers offshore may visit us overnight into monday the bulk of the day monday is cloudy. no issues here.

the winds will pick up with the system. heavy downpours for the tuesday morning commute. as we get towards the afternoon, it is right over the bay area. if you have to get to the airport or are doing shopping, it will be a soggy one tuesday. even in the afternoon, spotty showers through late tuesday. here are the rainfall totals, anywhere from recorders of an inch for most of you to about an inch. you can see the rain shadow effect for san jose, maybe one third of an inch. an inch and a half in santa rosa. an inch for the santa cruz mountains. this takes us to simmer 26th, where we could break some records for the snowiest season so far into december, where we are forecasting up to six feet of snow for the ski resorts. but likely two to three to four feet for many. once the winter storm warning goes up, likely it will be extended right through the holiday week. difficult traveling. they closed some of the roads

the past couple of days. you may want to rethink your plans. certainly stay tuned to the forecast. low to mid 50's but partly cloudy skies east and south. level two system arriving early tuesday. by wednesday, still breezy but scattered showers. thursday, we have a system that will bring in more moderate rain come christmas eve, taking us white -- taking us right through christmas day. certainly going to be to be cautious of. there are a lot of people out there all the time now. liz: absolutely. we have seen so many businesses close during the pandemic. now, new businesses are coming, many owned by immigrants or people of color. issues of racial justice are important for us as we work to build a better bay area. here is kumasi aaron with a look at doing business in one of the
