was frightening for them, especially being around a shooter. >> thanks for tuning in. as we speak, oakridge mall in san jose is still surrounded by police who are still searching the entire building. >> just hours ago, people ran screaming from the sound of gunshots. no victim has been found and neither has a suspect. >> abc 7 reporters there live. what did witnesses tell you about what they saw and heard? >> i'm told there was just complete confusion, no one knowing what was happening. i spoke with some people who described hearing gunshots, other who say they started running the moment they heard screaming, quite a few people who said they did all they could to hunker down and hide from whatever that threat was. 30 minutes ago we connected with san jose pd. the first call came in a at around 5:48 this afternoon. people are being escorted out of the mall and groups.

petey believes this was an isolated incident, and altercation between two groups. there is evidence the shooting happened inside the mall near the forever 21, but wanted specify what the evidence was. people we spoke with described the mall is being filled with people. you can imagine families with small children. people trying to get in the last few minutes of holiday shopping when the shooting happened. >> the mall was packed. at 6:00 people came home from work and doing the last minute shopping. in my store there were 10 or 15 people shopping there. the moment that people -- nobody knew what was going on, people were running. >> we still don't know if there is an armed suspect. something could start up again in a second. we are fully prepared for that. we have a lot of officers deployed in the mall. we have a lot of resource offices -- officers deployed that could help. >> they are taking a systematic

approach in clearing the mall. i asked if there were more officers on scene, especially considering the incident that happened over the weekend where a group of 6-8 men tried to steal from the macy's store. they did us all an employee in their attempt to get away. for tonight's response we know as jp had mentioned that sj fire is here, chp, the county sheriff's office and paramedics crews, ready and willing to assist whenever needed. we are told that since there is so much confusion, there is a movie theater that people were still in the middle of their movies, not knowing what was happening just outside of those walls. right now, that search still happening here. forever 21, i did ask if we knew the ages of the people involved, considering they were so close to the specific store. there's no information on either the suspects, suspect, or any of the victims or victim involved in this case. dan: any sense at all about how

northern california coast after noon. the epicenter was 31 miles west of the town of ferndale in humboldt county. look at what happened to the house in eureka. the quake was felt from the bay area to the oregon border. >> whoa, whoa, whoa. ama: that was the reaction of the man at the moment the quake struck as the car rocked in the traffic signal swayed. another video shows a window that was shattered at a store. >> we are getting local reports of strong shaking throughout ferndale in that area. there has been a report of damage, but nonstructural. ama: since the quake hit, there

have been more than 50 aftershocks, one as big as 4.5. dan: now onto storm watch because this view of live doppler 7 will change soon and significantly. we are expecting rain every single day through christmas. abc 7 news meteorologist andy patel is here truck -- is here tracking all the wet weather. >> it all starts tomorrow afternoon. first day of winter tomorrow. let me show you live doppler 7. you will notice all the clouds have gathered. we don't have rain yet. i want to show you the wider perspective. here is the first storm with a weak atmospheric river. that storm will arrive tomorrow afternoon. it's a level two and will continue into wednesday, lights a moderate rain, occasional downpours and breezy to gusty conditions. timing it out by noon time, it's starting to move into the north bay. you will have to wait until later in the afternoon and evening before it starts across the central and southern portion of the viewing area by 7:00 p.m.

omicron variant in the united states. a mid-level staff member at the white house is tested positive. a person came into contact with president biden last friday and the president has tested negative for covid. contra costa county announced three cases of the omicron variant. health officials say it's likely been in the community and was detected on december eighth. omicron variant was diagnosed in two thirds of the bay's counties including san francisco, so loma and contra costa -- sonoma in contra costa county. dan: california is suing walmart, accusing the retailer of dumping hazardous waste across the state. >> walmart is not cleaning up its act and we are all paying the price. it's time for this unacceptable behavior to end. no corporation is too big to follow the law. this lawsuit -- this lawsuit should be a warning to the worst offenders. dan: the attorney general says

the investigation into last month's deadly shooting at a security guard informed police officer. also today, the police chief discussed the disparity in responding to calls in east oakland and announced a solution to try to deal with the violence in the city. abc 7 news anchor dian, has the story. >> as oakland marked its 133rd homicide of the year over the weekend, boast -- both in east oakland, the police chief addressed shifting resources, creating new districts six to bring 48 more all-time officers to the area. >> it is significant because it means the department has recognized the impact of the calls for service in emergency calls that are coming in from the east oakland residents in need for more presence in the community. >> citing 60% of service calls coming from east oakland, he assured the public resources would not be taken away from the

continue to follow up on all leads. >> chief armstrong credits information provided by the public and assisting in the investigation. he says he feels hopeful and optimistic those responsible will be identified. dan: oaklands town received a boost from governor gavin newsom to fight the surge in violent crime. >> i want to commend the governor for stepping in and for sending support for the state of california and local law enforcement grants. also a response from the governor that he will be working with the legislator to respond to my request for more cameras, even license plate readers on our freeway on and off ramps. dan: the mayor made that request last week. today, the mayor stressed a violent crime reaches far beyond the city limits of oakland. leaders across the bay area need to collaborate and maximize the

resources to solve the problem. ama: an organized retail robbery ended with 15 subset -- suspects getting away from police. a woman was arrested for allegedly interfering with police and allowing a suspect to escape. it was the same all as tonight's breaking news scene. >> as holiday shoppers got their last-minute items at oakridge mall, san jose police started their investigation into another mass robbery. police say up to 16 suspects attempted to rob this macy's of more than $1000 in merchandise. the same store was hit in a november robbery. >> to loss prevention employees successfully detained one of the suspects. while they are detaining that person, a group of this coordinated organized group that went in there, at least three of them came back and violently assaulted the loss prevention employee. >> the show some of her injuries. she was pulled down by her hair, punched and kicked in the head.

we will keep responding. >> in san jose, dustin dorsey, abc 7 news. ama: the san francisco attorney's office says its investigation into organized retail theft is making progress. the district attorney announced arrest warrants for five people in two criminal indictments -- indictments. it was sparked by a series of thefts at a macy's in 2019. the operation led to the recovery of $2 million in suspected stolen property, and multiple arrests and indictments. dan: let's turn to the weather, winter will begin in grand style. ama: we are in for it. >> a level two storm is coming in. i want to show you live doppler seven. you will notice there is a storm off the coast. the main reign is 113 miles away from the northern california coast. it's coming in our direction. we have a lot of clouds ahead of it. as you look at the live picture, it's dry on the golden gate

dan: today is the first day of jury deliberations in the elizabeth holmes trial. danny: she is charged with 11 counts of fraud and could face decades in prison. dan: we have a look at the case from federal court. reporter: we will learn the fate of elizabeth holmes any day now. the jury has 11 charges to go through. and regardless of what verdict comes down, experts say the decision will send a strong message to silicon valley. as disgraced theranos c.e.o. elizabeth holmes is awaiting her fate, so is the future of silicon valley. >> i think silicon valley is taking it seriously and it will probably have a sobering impact. reporter: she said the evidence revealed in this case has already served as a learning

dan: let's give you a look at conditions outside now. this is the bay bridge toll plaza of course. a dream right now. mostly empty as you can see. our producer kay tells me that may be a u.f.o. you see there.r. i-80 is going to be one of the busiest places for drivers trying to travel for christmas according to aaa. keep that many mind. now to a liveportic prected allg garages would be full by last friday. aaa says overall christmas travel will be up 1/3 compared to last year during the pandemic but only a fraction of travelers are flying to their destination. ama: as we get closer to the christmas holiday more people are trying to get covid tests, especially at-home tests. for many, those tests are hard to find.

reporter: travel and holiday plans continue for many throughout bay area. dr. salinas is encouraging people not to gather but recognizes many will not be canceling plans. he said knowing whether you're positive or not before you meet with people is critical, even if you're vaccinated. >> the recommendation in terms of getting tests to try to meet with others safely is to do an ant general test right before the meeting -- antigen test right before the meeting. those tests have become a hot commodity and are very difficult to obtain. reporter: it is something this local mom at a walgreens can confirm. >> we started calling around. one place said online they had it. i drove there and they didn't have it. so then he kept looking online and found this store. so i'm driving all the way down here to find it and got them.

dan: conservative senator joe manchin fired back at the white house today saying they can't pressure him at voting for the build back better bill. he is a no-vote on the spending plan. that deal is potentially fatal blow to the cornerstone of the president's domestic agenda. reporter: joe manchin blaming white house staff for tanking negotiations on president biden's build back better bill. manchin on news radio. >> surely to god we can move one person. surely we can badger and beat one person up. surely we can get enough protesters that they will just go for anything. he is making sure people know the president is not at fault.
