school. boosters also be and tory port city employees in san jose. san francisco confirming at least 30 cases of omicron. the public health director believes this is only the beginning. >> we expect a doubling of cases every 2-3 a lot of of of of of going to become infected with this virus. reggie: he says cases francisco have doubled in five days. the cdc warned the number of infections in the next few days could be higher than all other peaks. even though omicron appears to be less severe, the sheer number of cases could overwhelm hospitals. >> president biden's includes deploying 1000 military personnel to help hospitals, as well as testing sites.

the government also plans to distribute a hundred million free at home covid tests. there will be a website. spike in infections is feeling a massive demand for testing. reporters pressed the president on whether the shortage of testing is a failure for the administration. president biden: no, it is not. covid is spreading so rapidly. it happened almost overnight. >> the fda is expected to authorize pills to treat covid made by pfizer and merck. according to bloomberg, that authorization could come as soon as today. reggie: eric swalwell has an idea. he wants a mandate for vaccines on domestic flights. he, along with dianne feinstein, have sent a letter to the cdc and faa urging them to require proof of vaccination or a

negative covid test in order to fight. kumasi: barbara lee has a breakthrough case of covid. she received the result earlier this week. yesterday, she said she has a mild cold and it knows it could have been worse if she was not vaccinated and had a booster shot. in the north bay, a host of a recent holiday party in marina county required everybody to be vaccinated and test negative, but dozens of guests tested positive. >> we are presuming that this is an omicron-related outbreak. >> dr. matt willis says omicron is exploding across the country. he says it is likely responsible for an outbreak at a holiday party held at the farmhouse local restaurant on december 11. 20 -- 28

inspect ridges. the agency has 160 drone pilots. they can maneuver close to unstable areas safely. before these drones, crews on the ground were at rater risk. >> if they were to assess a slide, they might have to scale up on the thing to see if they see anything else that looks like it might the coming down. we are able to do that with a ucsaanner. reggie: it allows geologists and engineers to make critical decisions faster. mike: we love seeing that technology continue to keep us safe and allow us to predict the picture, even in rater capacity. that is the beauty of weather and some of these earth sciences. they are always improving. let me show you what is going on in san jose. 101 at 880 is wet. wet.

you should normally be able to see the lights from san francisco once you make it through the tunnel, but that is not the case this morning. it looks completely black. in addition to the rain, you are dealing with visibility problems. 880 at the coliseum camera, very wet. we have seen about six spinouts this morning and a new crash in south san francisco on southbound 101. injuries reported. everybody, be careful. reggie: firefighters show up to a san francisco hospital for a heartwarming reason. kumasi: a major bay area tech company now calling time out on an in person convention that is starting to fall apart. >> it is hard for a family to lose a child. you are not alone. reggie: san jose is moving

traffic deaths in san jose near traffic -- near record levels. reggie: the city matched a record on monday. a person was killed near 680. and look at how families are trying to stop these deaths. >> san jose is approaching a record it does not want to achieve -- the most traffic deaths in one year. on monday, the city reached 60 victims, tie-in with the high. >> it sounds impersonal when we

talk about the numbers, but we need to keep track of these fatalities so we can take a strategic approach to fix the problem. >> colin heyne pointed to the vision zero project that aims to eliminate traffic deaths. he says more recent research shows a spike in traffic fatalities caused by speeding. more immediate efforts will focus on slowing down drivers and making it more evident where people should cross the street. >> and a hit and that i hear about, it just takes my breath away. it brings back memories and reminds me of my daughter. >> her daughter was in her wheelchair and in the crosswalk when she was hit and left for dead since the crash, her family return -- turned to city leaders

reggie: the oakland police department will swear in 25 new officers. the police chief and the mayor have been pushing for new officers. the city council approved two new police academies, unfreezing positions, and hiring dozens of new officers. kumasi: crime is a top concern in the bay area but several innovators are using technology to help people protect them selves and their property. we spoke with the founders behind three different apps helping people stay safe. one app is called body guard. it allows you to hire a guard starting at $50 an hour.

another is called watch my car, a platform where car owners can watch cash -- cancancan watch their car for up to $25 an hour. >> it only takes a minute or two. when you have a security guard that is present, you have to make a choice. law enforcement cannot do this themselves. reggie: wow. kumasi: another app called ask scout uses location-based crime and other data to provide a safety score. that app is free. drills in the trial of elizabeth holmes will continue deliberations tomorrow before taking a break for the holiday jurors wanted to know if they could take instructions home to read them.
