much all of us are receiving the same intensity of light rain. here is some darker green around alameda. that is going to exacerbate the situation, like you see right here in san jose, where that spray is coming off the cars as they fly by. you are trailing everybody else, but we expected that. here is the day planner for today, just getting ready for wet weather at any moment. temperatures near 60. >> happening now, it is no white christmas, but the bay area is starting to see its fair share of winter weather on the roads. it is kind of hard to see because there is rain on the camera, you can see several days. amy, where are you? amy: here we go. we are northbound 680. we are headed toward san ramon,

and we are really having a hard time watching our windshield wipers keep up with the rain coming down right now. we are getting a good soaking. it is very wet out here. there is not a lot of cars, though. keep in mind you were going to be dealing with this if you are heading out this morning. there is not a dry spot. the whole bay area getting soaked. that is good news for the tahoe economy. bad news for driving up there the next few days. the conditions will be rough for families heading up there. not looking forward to that drive. those in the tourism industry say to stay safe, there will be plenty of time to enjoy this snow. >> this is going to set us up for january, into february. don't push yourself to get up here. amy: here is a look at the rain last night in marin county. will want to have rain gear handy for the next week.

if you're going to be christmas shopping, expect to be dealing with rain. if you have a commute this morning, here is one last look at the conditions. northbound 680, not a lot of cars going in this direction right now. it is very wet out here. it is raining right now, see you will definitely want to be careful. live in the east bay, amy hollyfield. >> thank you. checking out another look from our roof camera this morning. we know these storms can pack a punch. caltrans is using a new tool. this is an advanced drone equipped with high resolution cameras to assess the risk of rock slides. employs 3dddddddd give geologists microscopic details of unstable slides. this is technology caltrans is also using to inspect bridges. the agency has 160 licensed drone pilots, and the drones have 360 degree obstacle

avoidance so they can maneuver close to unstable areas safely. who's on the ground were at greater risk. >> if they were to assess a slide, they may have to scale up on the thing to be able to view what is on top and see if they see anything else that might be coming down, whereas we are able to do that in a much faster, much safer manner. >> this new technology allows engineers to survey damage and make critical decisions faster. you can keep track of the weather conditions as our storms are moving in. this is a tool that will show you live doppler 7, the latest seven day forecast, and air quality where you live. it is on our website and on our streaming app. >> now to the coronavirus pandemic. governor newsom will be in the bay area to lay out new state actions. we know health care workers will be required to get a booster, and the covid-19 vaccine will be added to the list of mandatory vaccinations for kids going to school.

booster doses could also be mandatory for city employees in san jose. the city council still has to approve that plan. san francisco is confirming 30 cases of the omicron variant. the city health director says he believes this is just the beginning. >> we expect a doubling of cases every two to three days. a lot of people are going to become infected because it is so transmissible. >> dr. koufax says cases in san francisco have doubled in five days. the city once the number of covid infections could be higher than all of the other peaks we have seen during this pandemic. even though omicron may be less severe, the number of cases could overwhelm hospitals. the steps the biden administration is taking. >> president biden's plan includes 1000 military personnel , as well as new federal testing sites. the federal government also

plans to distribute 500 million free at home covid-19 tests. there will be able to register for them starting next month on a website that has yet to be revealed. the spike in infections is fueling a massive demand for testing we have seen locally. reporters pressed the president on whether the shortage of testing is a failure for the administration. pres. biden: no, it is not, because covid is spreading so rapidly. if you notice, it happened almost overnight just in the past month. >> the fda is expected to authorize pills made by pfizer and merck. according to bloomberg, authorization could come as soon as today. >> at a recent holiday party hosts required everyone to be vaccinated and tested negative, but despite those precautions after the party dozens of guests tested positive. marin county public health officer says omicron is likely

right down the 680 corridor, all of those areas to the west end north, tomorrow it moves back up to the north bay and spreads to the coastal parts of sonoma county as we head into friday. future radar, and we are going to see a lot of green and not a lot of it, except for in our hills. comes the next push of heavier showers and the potential for thunderstorms. locally, intense rain, which means more ponding on the roadways for tomorrow morning's commute. this rose out of here by 9:00. we are left over with scattered showers tomorrow and the l friday for some isolated showers before the next system hits us christmas day. he will take a look at that next. >> we have a crash on the san mateo bridge. this is going to affect anybody. it is a spin out, that is what we expect when this weather is part of our morning commute.

>> this morning there is growing concern in the southbay as traffic deaths in san jose are nearing record levels. >> the city just matched a two-decade high in deaths after a person was killed near i 680. that victim has not identified. the now 60 victims of traffic crashes for 2021. that ties with 2015 and 2019 highs. in 2015 the city launched the zero project. it aims to eliminate traffic deaths. >> it sounds impersonal me talk about these numbers, but we need to keep track of these crashes, these fatalities so we can take a strategic approach to try to fix the problem. >> officials say more recent research shows a spike in traffic fatalities caused by speeding. more immediate efforts will focus on slowing down drivers, improving visibility, and making it more evident where people

should cross the street. san francisco firefighters were at st. mary's in the giving spirit, collecting toys donated from doctors, nurses, and nations. it is where the annual san francisco firefighters toy drive. people donate thousands of toys every year. last year's drive got canceled, and st. mary's employees found out about this year's drive at the last minute, but were still able to gather hundreds of toys. >> it is great to see all of these toys they came in. people have been shopping for their families and extra for kids in the community as well. just proud to see how our staff have come together. >> father pablo lust of toys during the event. it is not too late to donate. you can drop off toys at any fire station in san francisco. they are asking for bikes and whatever toy you can get. >> there is a mcdonald's in china where you can ride a stationary bike and burn off what you just ate -- or what you

[laughter] good intentions, not on the48 d. here is a look at san francisco, the embarcadero. on and off rain today. heavier showers with thunderstorms possible tonight, which means even more standing water during tomorrow's morning commute. we get into the cold part of this storm with snow possible and our mountains. if not christmas day, will have a chance monday, and likely tuesday. heading out right now, most of

us in the low 40's to low 50's. about 52 degrees. not too chilly by winter standards. mid to upper 50's, but you notice the rain does taper in the afternoon. look at how extensive it gets during the evening and especially the overnight hours as we bump up to a two on that storm impact scale. let's take a look at the totality of rain from now all the way to sunday night. we are still looking at about one to three inches, and a couple of inches in our northern mountains. this is over so many days that the flooding you dealt with this morning, it will be worse tomorrow tomorrow is probably going to be the worst day of it, then notice everything else, they should all be able to handle the intensity of this rain. aaaaa isolated showers. the net cold system comes in saturday. sunday is a one, ramps up to a

the altamont pass and highway four into the southbay. and from the san mateo bridge southward we are showing radar returns. we have light rain everywhere, and that is going to continue in a steady fashion in the mountains, while it becomes intermittent for the rest of us as we head into midmorning. it is a one on the storm impact scale. i was like, man, those cars look like they're going slow. about 40 miles an hour on the bay bridge right now, so factor that in. the heaviest tapirs as we head to the morning commute, just scattered showers with mountains, steady rain, then thunderstorms possible tonight as a stronger part of this storm comes in. i will show you that, coming up. >> rain is falling steady, and so is the snow in the sierra. here is a look at north lake tahoe this morning. some in the bay area are trying to make it up there before even

more snowfalls. amy hollyfield has a look at snow, but still plenty of rain on the roads. amy: if they are heading out this morning they are going to deal with rough conditions in the bay area. look at what we are facing on the roads. we are on northbound 680 in danville and getting soaked. it is really coming down out here, so keep this in mind. we have been seeing this all morning, waves of heavy rain. and it will let up to a light drizzle, not a single dry patch in the bay area this morning. this does mean snow in the sierra. that is good news for skiers and the tahoe economy. bad news if you have not left yet. the driving conditions are expected to be rough. driving not recommended during the snow. families say they are excited about the snow but not looking forward to the drive. >> it is a little nerve-racking. we are not sure if we are going to be able to make it over, so

potentially we might stay in auburn instead if we can't make it over the past. -- the past. >> here is a look at the rain. it is still raining this morning. it has been a steady soaking. we are expecting a few inches in the next few days, adding to our already-impressive rainy season. you were going to want to keep that raingear handy if you have to work today or have last-minute shopping. you are going to be facing rain, and just in the last couple of minutes it has picked up. this is a pretty good downpour we are dealing with right now, so plan this to be part of your drive this morning. this is another look at northbound 680, headed toward walnut creek. a really good soaking happening right now. reporting live in the east bay, amy hollyfield. >> thank you. you can keep an eye on the

weather anytime. you find it on the abc 7 bay area news app. developingngngng variant. dr. fauci says the variant will account for 90% of cases in the next two weeks. >> becomes as testing sites are overwhelmed. jobina has more. >> the demand for covid testing across the country has skyrocketed. people have waited hours just to get tested before they gather for the holidays. the cdc reports models suggest the number of new cases from the surge could top the highest we saw in previous waves. this weight could peak in january. dr. rochelle walensky is on gma talking about the omicron variant and testing. >> we have been wrapping up testing. we have much more testing now and we had months ago. we were in the middle of a delta search when omicron hit. with more mutations, we need more immune protection, and that

might become the first city and california to require booster shots. the mayor announced a proposal to make it mandatory for city workers. but the plan would not stop there. >> that access to major gathering spaces like the arena and convention center, many public theaters, will also require proof of having received a booster shot. >> he says the city has one of the highest vaccination rates around, and when it comes to city employees more than 95% have met the original vaccination mandate. the mayor's proposal needs the approval of the city council. >>passengers they are taking precautions to keep people as safe as they can from covid-19. 630,000 people are expected to fly through san francisco airport.

the airline says airline says i top priority, especially with omicron. >> i thought we might see some dropping in bookings just because of the new variant, but we are not. people want to go see family, they want to spend the holidays with their loved ones. we are happy to see that, that at the same time safety is number 14 united airlines. >> united is asking customers to download the company app for a smoother experience. >> tsa checkpoints will start accepting apple wallet ids at two u.s. airports in february. this is a test, and if it works the testing will expand. it is not clear which airports will be involved. >> omicron app that will let you hire your own bodyguard, and even one for your car. there is an app for that. as we will show you, there is more than one. a decades-old contest between

fire stations returns today. the prize for the best-decorated station. mike: let's take a look at what is going on what our next storm. as promised, the storm impacted scale says, how about we push it up to a moderate two? my forecast says that. even the chance of thunderstorms with hail and more intense downpours, and locally breezy conditions, out of the rain that comes in tonight. here is a look at what is going on during the overnight hours. napa, right across the bridge, down the san ramon valley and across the dunbar bridge, all of that to the west and north, that is your best chance for a thunderstorm tonight through tomorrow. then it moves up to mainly the coast of mendocino county, then sonoma county as we head toward friday. here is a look at future radar. you don't see much in the way of yellow. watch the decrease in the amount of radar returns. that is why it is going to become scattered, and steadier

up in the higher elevations. he was a look at what is going on as we head toward midnight. the next chunk of energy with moderate downpours coming through, but look at that. by 10:00 tomorrow morning it is gone. it is going to leave behind even more puddles and an even more treacherous commute tomorrow. thursday afternoon, some scattered showers, and right now as i stretch out this high-resolution model as far as it goes, it is trending drier for friday, until we get to the evening hours. that would be really nice. macron exceptionally busy day, friday can be. up to .2 inches of rain possible, and you can see the heavier rain coming in tonight, nearly a half inch to more than an inch in our higher elevations. this is the one part of the storm. the cold part is going to bring us a chance of snow come christmas. jobina: good morning, everyone. the chp is reporting a mail

truck that overturned on eastbound 580 slid across all lanes. it is now blocking a couple of lanes, which is why you see that slow down at eastbound 580. the positive news is that, miraculously, no one was hurt. but i mean, wow. he also have this roadway flooding that has slowed down traffic on 880 in oakland. we had a crash there earlier, so just be aware of that. now we have a crash on the san mateo bridge, which is why you see the traffic is slower on the right-hand side of the screen. that is from a spin out. i will finish here with the golden gate bridge. if there is any positive to the commute it is that there are not as many people on the roads because of the holiday, but as you just heard, we have a lot of issues. be aware, slowdown, and be safe. we will be right back. >> the abc 7 storm impacted
