weather any time on the abc 7 bay area news app available on roku, amazon fire, android tv and apple tv. dan: new developments in the deadly shooting of a security guard protecting a tv news crew. police announced two suspects are in custody, believed to be involved. stephanie sierra spoke with oakland's police chief about what is next. >> nearly a month after the murder of a tv news security guard while on assignment in oakland, the police chief says the department has two suspects in custody and are closing in on a third. >> we have identified a third suspect that we are seeking right now with the help of law enforcement partners. >> chief armstrong confirmed one of the suspects is the owner of the 2000 five white acura recovered last week, believed to be used in the crime. the chief would not identify either suspect but did confirm they were arrested on unrelated

charges. >> the arrests they made were for offenses already committed. warrants from other departments as well. the homicide charge is forthcoming. >> the chief says help from the community was credible -- critical. the da will determine who will receive the roughly $32,000 reward. >> in the coming days, i feel confident the district attorney will charge this case and we will be able to come will pour the public -- come before the public and say these three individuals were responsible for the murder. >> the department says they have no reason to believe the murder was anything more than a crime of opportunity. but expect more clarity once the third suspect is arrested. >> our investigation continues. once we are ready to apprehend the third suspect and charge all

three with homicide, i think we will better understand all of their roles and motives. dan: oakland's police department is adding to the force. 25 new officers celebrated their graduation from police academy. there was an emotional moment between one graduate and his mentor when he described what opd culture meets to him. >> i would like to show you what our country is. it is understanding integrity, loyalty and honesty. dan: chief armstrong says today's graduates will beef up oakland's forced to 694 officers. he says he is hopeful this will make a difference in curbing crime. kristen: covid-19, confirmed cases of omicron have been reported in all 50 states. as cases arise, the fda authorized the first ever antiviral covid treatment till today. joining us to talk about the

latest of elements, dr. patel. happy holidays. >> happy holidays to you. kristen: big news, right? the antiviral pill, is it a game changer? is it good news? >> it is right in the middle. it is good news and it is a game changer in terms of one more tool we have to prevent severe illness and death. which is important. but, you've heard me say this 1000 times, preventing people getting to that point is what we are literally -- what we really want to do. there's a lot more to this equation, but this is welcome news. kristen: you mentioned the booster. california now requiring health care workers to get the booster. do you think we should start thinking of getting fully vaccinated is three shots? should we stop using the term booster? >> absolutely.

i stopped using it weeks ago because i don't see reason to suggest this is a booster and not just part of a three dose series. we have seen data, we have seen the protection. we are waiting for the cdc to make formal recommendations and say hey, fully vaccinated means all three shots. that way there can be more mandates and regulations reflecting that. right now a lot of people say we can require two shots, but the booster we can't. that needs to change. kristen: isn't israel beginning a fourth? >> israel is. we tend to follow what israel is doing. i don't want to get there yet because we still have only 30% or so of people who have gotten the booster. kristen: a medical advisor to the airlines now say you are two to three times likely to get infected now flying with omicron. is that true? what do we do?

>> it does make sense in terms of omicron being more contagious. what i would be curious to see with respect to this comment is that it is actually from the airplane itself, or is it from transit to the airport, eating in the airport, going to the bathroom, there are lots of point of contact where people may let their guard down. if you are doing what you can come of that is honestly the best scenario. if you are vaccinated and boosted and you are flying to see your family, that is plenty safe to protect everyone around you. kristen: delta and jetblue have written to the cdc to suggest they cut in half the current 10 days of isolation rule for breaker cases. they say it is not necessary. i am curious what you think about that. that applies to a letter -- a lot of other settings too.

how long do you really need to isolate? >> i think this needs to be addressed. especially if someone tests positive for sars-cov-2, which is different from symptomatic covid-19, they don't have cysts -- symptoms and they feel fine for that needs to be revisited. recommendations have changed. there are people out there who can't afford to take time off work, but they will test positive. the company will say you can't come in until you get a negative test. and then they are waiting in line 4, 5, 6 hours. not everyone can do that. this would also cut into a health care shortage. if someone is out of a busy icu for 10 days. this needs to be revisited as we start moving into conversations about when this becomes and then make. kristen: i want to ask you about dr. fauci, saying he would ask on vaccinated relatives not to come. >> if you are in a position

dan: auto safety regulators have opened an investigation into tesla. the agency has received reports at can play games on the touchscreen while they are driving. investigators are looking at the 580,000 teslas sold since 2017. the automaker had said in the past that users have to press a button saying "i am a passenger," to turn on the future. a box sat unopened for nearly a
