filling our local reservoirs. kumasi: and we want to take you live outside around the bay area , and to our exclusive storm impact. when this is going to ease up. reggie: good morning to you. you are watching abc seven mornings, wherever you stream. we are going to start with the weather. mike: i like your thinking. maybe not so nice a commute this morning because of the rain. here is video from overnight, showing the rain coming down in the south bay. this was taken near north santa cruz at highway nine. you can see a very steady stream hitting pavement. a little more than an inch of rain. one of the higher amounts in the south bay. here is one of the letter amounts, about 0.2 inches.

look at all the spray being kicked up by cars and trucks. through 10:00 this morning, expect more downpours, more ponding on the roadways, and even more thunderstorms possible, with an uptick in intensity. along 580, across the san mateo bridge and all the way up to half moon bay, this is slowly sinking to the south. now in south san francisco. at this, right around alameda. you can see how heavy the rain is. this morning, scattered showers, and one later on. kumasi: with your thursday morning drive, as you might expect -- we had a big rig literally drive off of 280. excuse me, highway 24 in lafayette, down onto pleasant hill road. the video you are looking at from earlier this morning. pleasant hill road under 24, you

can see the freeway over the top of the crash there. 24 was slow for a time, but now it is clear both directions. not so fast here in will not creek. we have been watching chp. a lot of activity. we have several incidents and standing water. have been a couple of spin outs with cars hitting the center divide. so extra caution and extra time needed if you are traveling through one not creek in the southbound direction. we do have an accident on the high rise of the san mateo bridge. you can see the rain coming down here. it is about a 20 minute drive from 880 across the span over toward 101 with that accident blocking a lane of traffic. reggie: thank you, sue. a storm watch continues in the sierra were heavy rain hit on sunday. here is what it looked like on myers. you see the rain. that means slick roadways.

travel is highly discouraged during this winter storm. better conditions are expected later today. kumasi: storms in the bay area are making a measurable difference in our drought. water officials reporting a total of 11 inches plus of rainfall. here is what it looked like at stafford lake. levels were critically low. now what it looks like after all of this rain. over levels are substantially higher. >> it is very welcome. from where we were before the october rains to where we are now, it's a dramatic difference. kumasi: certainly, the drought is not over. water officials say the reservoirs are at 77% of their total storage supply. that means board members are going to meet again next month to evaluate the water restrictions. you can keep an eye on the weather, including live doppler 7, any, by finding the bay area app.

kumasi: we know a lot of you are planning to travel for the holidays. you are not alone. this is expected to be one of the busiest travel days in two years, despite the omicron variant. amy hollyfield is inthore. amy: we keep hearing about performances being canceled, bars and restaurants closing because of the variant -- but look at travel. it is alive and well. people are on the move. they are still going to visit people, to get out of here, to go and use this holiday time to travel. united airlines gives us a snapshot of how things look. they tell us their numbers for this holiday season are the highest they have seen during the pandemic. the airline thought maybe they would see a drop in bookings because of the new variant, but they did not. it is busy at sfo. we have seen some hesitation from passengers about the omicron variant this morning, but they are still heading out today.

>> i am headed to new york and i hope everything is ok. >> i am nervous about going to new york, but we are going to be mostly with family and friends. amy: health officials say if you are traveling they recommend you get covid, you wear a high-quality mask, and you are vaccinated and boosted. in california, the recommendation from health officials is that visitors get a covid test three to five days after arriving in the state. reggie: amy, thank you. with the holiday travel rush in full swing, there is a new study showing omicron might we w consider getting on a plane. if you are vaccinated and boosted, the risk of serious illness from death -- or death is very low. the latest wave could peek in the coming weeks. the new data shows infections are dropping dramatically in south africa, where omicron was discovered nearly a month ago.

mike: we are coming up at 6:10 on this soggy thursday. it does not stop. we have a chance of thunderstorms as we head throughout the day. the best chance is going to be this morning, widespread, and then isolated chances as we head to the afternoon hours. you can see by 10:00 most of the heavy storms and downpours are moving to the east and south, away from us. it looks pretty nice during the lunch hour, and then some more scattered showers develop as we head through 5:00. that increases as we head into the evening and overnight hours. first, i'm going to give you an idea of what to expect the rest of the day. your commute is a little bit easier than everybody else's. nearly a quarter to still three quarters of an inch possible as we head to the rest of the day. let's see what is going on with the roads. sue: good morning, everyone.

up to the footbridge. we are told there is possibly a car here, and there is a huge emergency response. we have several fire trucks, search-and-rescue type people. we also saw a truck which had a boat on it. we do not see them rushing in. we saw them huddling and discussing what to do. it leads me to believe there is not an intense emergency going on at this very minute. i asked them if they knew if somebody was in there or if there was a car stuck in there. they say we are trying to determine that. at this point, we are uncertain about what or who is possibly stuck in the water, but there is a huge response out here, and there is a lot of water. i did hear on the radio somebody talking about water coming out of the manholes. they certainly have an infrastructure problem here.
