it was not a present. it was a tough drive-in. and welcome. nice to see you this morning. here's a look at what is going on outside. we have a worn on the storm impact scale. i will keep it a one throughout the day even though our steady rain will be this morning the best chance for ponding on the roadways but we have a chance for scattered showers the rest of today and a slight chance of some lightning. for super commuters you can see highway 4 and the ultima pass where it is heavier now, down into the south bay we have wet weather just about everywhere. yellows and greens, we have moderate and light showers as you head up to the north bay. let's see what is going on at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is raining for always a few puddles as you approach the tollbooths there. be careful. 48 to 51. scattered showers the rest of the day with temperatures around 50 to 53 degrees. we will talk about tonight storm and our chances of snow coming up. >> just as many people are

returning to traveling for the holidays are now running into problems getting on the flightsfor christmas. hundreds of flights across the country are canceled this morning and the major reason is covid. ryan curry live at sfo with more on that. good morning. ryan: those two airlines, del and united come have canceled hundreds of flights throughout the country. as you know those are two of the most popular airlines used in the united states. citing reasons like covid and weather delays. it comes at a time where tsa says travel numbers to back to where the -- are back to where they were before the pandemic. on wednesday the 22, tsa says travel numbers were higher tha day then where they were on the same day back in 2019. as far as the specific for the cancellations, the delta canceled 121 flights for

it is unclear how many impact to the bay area airports but according to flight aware. 29 flights canceled at sfo, most of them are united. >> all it takes is a few breakthrough cases to have a situation where there is some type of meltdown or massive operational disruption. ryan: again, citing covid covidc reason. we did reach out to delta and united who say they exhausted as many resources as possible to try and prevent the cancellations. that moves schedules around, is moving planes around to see if they can get these flights filled. but here we are in christmas eve and a lot of flights canceled. that would be a beacon convenience for a lot of people trying to do their holiday travel. ryan curry, abc7 news. >> a group of democratic lawmakers are calling to require domestic airline passenger show proof of covid-19 vaccination status or a recent

negative test before flying p this week they sent a letter to the cdc director and faa administrators. the law makers pointed out that proof of vaccination and a negative test is already required for people coming back into the u.s. >> now to mor the fda gave the green light to merck's drug. this pill will be given to patients at high risk for severe illness. federal officials have said shorter isolation protocols for fully vaccinated health care workers who test positive for covid. they can return to work after seven days if they have a negative test and no symptoms. if there are some staffing shortages, it can be five days or even less. california's numbers continue to rise. the 7 day test positivity rate is at fo 4.2%.

frontline workers in sonoma will need to get boosters. the county issued a health order and that includes first responders, law enforcement, medical staff, pharmacists and all school employees. anyone cannot provide proof of a booster will have -- will be required to test twice a week. >> the city of campbell has voted to extend his outdoor dining permit p the city council approved it to stay through the end of march of next year before the variant surge, the plan was to end the temporary program in early january. if you have questions about covid-19 vaccines you can ask our vaccine team. go to our website abc7news.com /vaccine and clicked on the blue box. >> the port of oakland is closer to his goal of zero emissions. port officials have been -- asked a 5.2 million dollar it is used to install solar

francisco. get ready for an uptick in your intensity. skyline boulevard heading towards 280 you have the possibility of ponding on the roadways, moderate to heavy downpours. it will hit los altos hills in less than three minutes. sunnyvale at 5:24 and santa clara at 5:35. look for more areas of standing water here and rain coming down heavily. our best chance of thunderstorms remains across the north bay today. now, let's take a look at future radar. this storm unlike yesterday has ack exit st. it is t hereaneesunshine breaking outs you scramble those last-minute details for today. by 3:30, broken clouds and sunshine. if you're heading out around 8:00 -- if you are out later on for a different service, or whatever you may be doing you can see scattered showers but not a whole lot. rainfall potential for the rest of today is best in the southern half, up to a third of an inch

>> developing news out of north hollywood. a 14-year-old girl was found dead inside address room after police fired at a suspect. it happened at a burlington store yesterday. los angeles police first responded to an assault call. police shot at the suspect who died but behind him was a dressing room where a bullet hit the teenager. the assault victim was injured and taken to the hospital. >> sentencing for former suburban minneapolis please officer kim potter is set for february.

yesterday jury found her guilty in the killing of daunte wright. potter was convicted on first and second degree manslaughter charges. daunte wright was fatally shot in april during a traffic stop when potter claimed she mistook her gun for taser. wright's mother describes the moment she heard the verdict. >> i kind of let out a because it was built out an anticipation and while we were waiting for the last few days. >> potter tearfully testified last week, yesterday she showed no emotion as the verdict was read. potter faces 11 years in prisons. >> days before the 25th anniversary of murder o jonbenet ramsey, boulder colorado police are providing an update. police say they have processed more than 1500 pieces of evidence since the six year old's death in 1996. they have run multiple suspects and checked for matches. the department says it is looking at new dna technology to

help them find ramsey's killer. the girl was reported missing the day after christmas 25 years ago. her body was later found in the family's basement. >> a quick thinking tsa officer saved a two-month-old baby at newark liberty airport in new jersey. you are looking at the video. that is officer cecilia morales. she said she jumped over the conveyor belt when she heard screams for help. she performed the heimlich we knew for on the baby boy who was not breathing. a second attempt worked. morales -- creditor training to help the infants -- to save the infants life. >> this is meant to be a festive time of the year but with the pandemic many people are struggling with stress and more. here's reporter morgan norwood with ways you can take care of your mind, body and soul this holiday season. >> the holidays are supposed to be a joyous time but for many americans and especially during this second straight year suffering due to the covid-19

for today you can see how sporadic the showers will be in the afternoon hours. no nearly as warmt. 53 to 54 degrees. tonight the transition begins to colder conditions in that transition will be a 2 on the storm impact scale with heavier showers a look at that snow in lake and mendocino county's starting tonight. mid to upper 40's. a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow during the transition. a thunderstorm transfer sunday will move back up to the north bay coast. here's look at frase-- at future radar. here comes the heavy batch of showers and snow on hamilton by noon. then we clear out and you will be able to see the snow and the north bay mountains and on hamilton and south of livermore. as we head and do sunday we will continue to have waves of cold showers that can bring us some -- in lower elevations and snow

hgighest. more improvement this weekend. these are the rain totals for saturday and sunday. half inch to an inch and a quarter. >> donations are pouring in to rebuild a san jose synagogue destroyed by fire. the rabbi let abc7 news surveillance video shows a man setting fire to the building. but fire investigators say it is not a p or to be a hate crime. while the fire left the synagogue uninhabitable the rabbi was more worried about saving scrolls. >> i came running to the scene. the one thing in my mind is how do i save the torah scrolls? they are the holiest part of our synagogue. >> the house had only been open three months before this fire. it is hoping to raise $500,000 to rebuild. you will find a link to the go-fund-me account in this story on our website, abc7news.com.

>> for so many attending worship service as a part of the holiday season. despite relatively high vaccination rates in the bay area, church, mosque, and synagogue attendance is far behind pre-pandemic levels p this morning we look at the numbers and hearing from faith leaders. >> nearly two years into the pandemic out their more empty seats in churches and synagogues and mosques signaling worshipers are reluctant to return. >> some communities are still very concerned and wary about coming back and they are quite cautious. others are coming back in droves. >> a catholic bishop of san jose says despite ongoing safety protocols like masking up and proper spacing, southbay mass attendance averages between 60 and 90% of pre-pandemic levels depending on the church. >> we're trying to keep that balance of inviting people back and yet maintaining the safety protocol. >> now concerns over the omicron

variant ahead of the christmas holiday are throwing congregations another cripple. -- another curveball. attendance at worship centers is down 22% compared in january 2022 are top or 2021. in santa clara county there has been a 20% decrease in church attendance. alameda and napa and solano counties have seen identical dips in attendance. >> i still think we have a long ways to go to be at attendance of pre-pandemic levels. >> a rabbi of francisco says attendance at the synagogue are half of levels despite san francisco having one of the highest vaccination rates in the bay area. >> our number one goal is to connect people and create community. it has been very difficult for us to do that with all the different variants. >> san francisco had one of the lowest dips in attendance at worship centers at just 5%

you watching. we are live on abc7 news and who live and where every stream. >> people have holiday plans. mike: it is not going to rain all day. our steadiest rain's morning and it will move out much faster than yesterday's rain and will not leave as much rain behind, but we do have another strong storm tonight and that will lead to some cold wintry showers with some snow for us as we head to the rest of the weekend and into next week. for now if you are heading to livermore on 580 or 84, there are some puddles developing the same thing around 680 and 880 and even heavier showers toward sunnyvale and santa clara across 101, 82 and 280. watch out for that. up to the north you can see already a little bit of a drying trend out of this one storm. and that is going to be the case as we head throughout the day. breezes pretty light but they pick up as we head into the afternoon hours. watch out for that but they will

also be bringing in a break with scattered showers after 7:00 all the way through the evening festivities. >> thank you. air travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels according to tsa but this christmas eve morning, hundreds of flights nationwide are canceled. reporter ryan curry live at sfo without covid is affecting air travel. ryan: good morning. yes, those numbers show that travels numbers are back to what they were almost before the pandemic. as a matter of fact cap this past wednesday tsa says they screened more passengers this year than they did two years ago on that date. that was before the pandemic it. but right now it is coming at the cost for hundreds of passengers going across nationwide are trying to head home for the holidays. the reason why that being is because of airlines canceling flights nationwide. specifically from delta and united flights. they say staffing issues due to the pandemic are causing them to exhaust all resources. so far united has canceled 169

flights. delta 121. now, they did not provide specifics for the bay area however, according to the website flight aware, 17 united flights and six delta flights have been canceled at sfo. it is just a little unclear if those flights are inbound or outbound. travel experts say this is a big problem happened because of flights getting both. they envision many difficulties with flights getting cancels and those are going to have to help out when they get rebooked. >> the challenge of course is that everything it has been booked so full that there's very little room to get people on other flights that are operating. >> now, bothhhh said they tried rescheduling workers and moving planes around to try to prevent flights from getting canceled. however, here we are in christmas eve and we have hundreds of flights nationwide, including some right here in the

bay area, that are in convincing men-- many passengers. numbers may be back up to where they were before the pandemic but a lot of those issues lingering for those trying to get home for the holidays. >> thank you. covid and concerns about the omicron variant were top of mind for travelers at oaklands airport. >> we worry about it. i was about to cancel my flight last night. >> we all got our boosters, we are doing every step. we have been looking forward to this trip so we made sure we stayed healthy and safe. >> yesterday marked the start of the 11 day holiday travel rush with nearly 370,000 passengers expected to use the airport between now and january 2. in addition to yesterday, the busiest dates are respected to be sunday january 2nd. >> an investigation is underway this morning to figure out what caused flooding so deep that killed two people in millbrae.

we first brought you this yesterday. it happened on this part of hillcrest boulevard near el camino real. it appears two vehicles drove into the water before the sun came up. at the time the video was taken, the two cars were submerged. the flooding hampered rescue efforts. >> they attempted to gain entry into the second vehicle. however, the water was rising quickly and became too dangerous for first responders. >> first responders were able to rescue two people from one car. two people in the other car died. investigators now trying to determine if adrain got -- a drain got clogged. >> flooding was a big problem in another area of millbrae. this is what it looks like at landing lane on 7:00 yesterday morning. water flooded the streets nearly a foot deep and crept into several people's garages. the street has flooded before

but residents say it is never been this bad. the water started to recede by midmorning. the city has told me that flooding is an issue with an airport pump. >> the heavy rain caused issues all across the bay area. in sonoma, an uber driver stole out -- stalled out on highway one. the driver and passenger were stuck inside into rescue crews got there. a pine tree came down near san mateo county in emerald hills where the down tree blocked the street. a rock slide cause damage to cars traveling on highway 24. several cars had to pull over the after the rocks caused flat tires. you can keep an i on the weather, including live doppler 7 any. you will find it on the bay area app available on roku, amazon fire and android and apple tv's. >> jurors in the theranos trials of elizabeth homes will not reach a verdict.

a second note to the judge requesting to replay audio recordings of phone calls that homes had with investors. >> for the second time this week elizabeth holmes walked out of court with her attorney still without a verdict.thi the jury said the judge another note requesting audio recordings be replayed of calls homes had with several investors. this is important given six of the 11 counts she's facing pertained to investors. the jury listened intently as both clips were played inside the courtroom. those transcript were not busy provided by the defense. one included a critical line where you hear we have built a business around our partnership with pharmaceutical companies and our partnership with the military. but the evidence revealed throughout the trail made it clear those partnerships with pfizer in the military were not how holmes betray them to investors and journalists. a legal expert says this question from the jury does not look good for the defense as it shows intent. >> all the audio tape.

staff and set up a new center for people to get drug treatment services. the second part proved to be more divisive. >> what they don't want is it to be's tied to the second part of the mayor's plan which is more cops. >> under the mayor's plan police presence in the tent loan would be boosted. the hope would be to crackdown on people selling and possibly using drugs like fennel. the board of supervisors plans to discuss the tenderloin emergency declaration again in january. >> san jose mayor -- calls homelessness is city's greatest failure. that was his message in the state of the city last night. san jose had more than 6000 on house residents. over the last year santa clara county supportive housing network provided permanent housing to 5000 people. the number of new on house residents declined by 30%. all according to our media -- mercury news. even so, the mayor says there is much more work to be done. >> in the silicon valley spirit
