out of their homes. good morning. thanks for waking up with us on sunday, december 26. you are watching abc 7 news at 6:00 a.m. live on abc 7, hulu live and wherever you stream. i am julian glover. we start off with a check of the forecast now with meteorologist lisa argen. we have been keeping the umbrella handy over the last few days. it seems like we shouldn't let it go too far. lisa: you are right, julian. it keeps on coming. the rain has lightened up a little bit this morning but it's still slippery out there. there is more to come. this is a level 1 system for your sunday. notice that as we get through the last couple of frames of our radar it is quieting down, but there is snow around clear lake. the temperatures are ofl awfully cold. quiet in the north bay over towards vallejo closer to the east bay. showers south of livermore. upper elevations looking at some snow. temperatures near 30 and scattered showers from sunny veil to the summit, santa cruz

mountains as well as mount hamilton. winds have been an issue from 25 miles an hour above 1,000 feet. it is gusty and that has allowed for wind-chill factors so it feels like it's near freezing in some spots. 39 santa clara. it is in the upper 30's from lafayette to nevada with 48 on the coast. but that is colder everywhere from 7 degrees colder at the coast, 11 degrees coiledder in our -- colder in our inland valleys. so 9:00 we will have a mixture of partly cloudy skies, maybe some scattered showers by noontime and an uptick in the showers. they'll continue to increase throughout the afternoon. the evening hours, your monday morning commute if you are working, could be dicey with some heavier rain and a level two system. we will talk about a break in the rain come up. julian: thank you, lisa. we will see you in just a second. we want to show you this. snow in the bay area. this is south of livermore. people in the area saw measurable snow covering san antonio valley road.

making driving conditions there treacherous. this is at an elevation of about 3,000 feet. on the peninsula abc 7 found people preparing for possible flooding. plenty of sandbags were there for residents to load up, with previous storms making a mess of things, this man he was not about to take any chances. >> trying to get ahead of the game. it started raining hefl this -- heavily this morning. i am getting some bags in there just in case for later. julian: a tree did come down as well in san bruno blocking crystal springs road. crews quickly were able to chop that one up and get it out of there. also on the peninsula flooding on millbrae street has caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to people's homes and put a dark cloud over their christmas weekend. it happened a few days ago on landing lane near s.f.o. between

highway 101 and el camino real. tim john spoke to some neighbors who worry that the upcoming storms could cause more problems. tim: for residents of landing lane in millbrae flooding has become a persistent worry. in the last few months, their street has flooded twice, once back in october and again earlier this week. >> we were sleeping. all of a sudden, i woke up about 7:00, i found all my garage was flooding. >> he has lived on this street for other 20 years. he says on thursday his house flooded with 22 inches of sewage water. >> cleaned up the whole thing from last time. i have to clean up again. >> song says his family's christmas has largely been ruined thanks to the devastation the recent flooding has caused. he estimates that the damage to his property this week totals in the thousands of dollars. >> my car has been damaged and my washer and drier, my refrigerator, my wine, my food.

>> residents here say it's not just the flooding that they're sick of. it's also the lack of solutions. ava also lives on landing lane. she and her neighbors have been trying to get help from public officials for months, but residents say the city of millbrae tells them the problem lies with a nearby airport pump and is out of their control. caught in between two entities she says she thinks a lot of the problems could be fixed if the area's sewage system gets updated. >> a lot of it is just deficiency in our infrastructure. it has never been fixed. >> for now landing lane residents say they live in fear of flooding happening again anytime it rains and just hope someone can come and help them. >> i hope we could fix the problems because i love this neighborhood. and i love this community. >> in millbrae, tim johns, abc 7 news. julian: happening now snow is hitting the sierra hard in the lake tahoe region.

i-80 is still closed and there is no timetable on when that may change. highway 50 is also closed at echo summit where several cars are stuck in the snow there. accidents have caused major delays. c.h.p. posted this video showing i-80 after it closed in both directions. the interstate is shut down from the nevada state line to colfax. you can see in this video all of the skiers having a good time. the national weather service has issued a winter storm warning through tuesday morning for lake tahoe. holiday travelers say it's been a frustrating couple of days. >> it's already like noon and we are going to head back to home neighbor an hour or two. >> an abc 7 news viewer told us it took him seven hours to get from south lake tahoe to san francisco yesterday. st rained the entire trip back.

vital discovery that could lead to an endemic. >> we think we have uncovered a key connection that we can ultimately fight not just this variant but future variants. >> in this lab his team along with partners across the world uncovered how mutations in the alpha variant are allowing the virus to evade our immune response. the same key mutations outside of the spike protein, were also found in the delta variant and in the omicron variant. >> certain proteins being produced at a higher level in that particular virus, once the virus affects the cells, and these particular proteins are able to inhibit our immune response, inhibiting our cells from fighting off infection. >> omicron accounts for more than 73% of covid cases in the u.s. the doctor believes the key to staying one step ahead is understanding previous variants. >> it's going to come to a point

where there's going to be combinations of the mutations that have already existed in the previous variant. >> he says vaccines, boosters and pharmaceuticals will continue to be key in this fight. >> i think this virus will ultimately become endemic just like influenza. we will have to be dealing with this for the rest of our lives but it won't be as deadly, that's the hope. every year we will probably need a booster shot of some kind. >> researchers believe this discovery could lead to beating omicron. in the newsroom, be luz penna, abc 7 news. julian: rain wasn't the only thing spoking streets in san francisco. a water main break flooded part of kenwood way. you can see the water rushing down the staircase. this is between 19th avenue and i-280. there were initial reports that the water flooded some homes there. the water department responded yesterday afternoon. san francisco's glide memorial

julian: the east contra fire protection district is getting a grant to support efforts during the pandemic. the money will be used towards the added cause of answering a high volume of calls. in 2020 the district could not respond to all calls because of severe underfunding. the grant is part of a $100 million allocation of the state's 2021 and 2022 budget. east contra costa fire serves 30,000 residents. christmas was delivered to thousands of people in san francisco by the salt vegas --al vegas -- salvation army this year. we were provided this video of volunteers. they planned to hand out a total of 4,000 meals but organizers say there is something else that might be an even better gift this time of the year. >> what's more important than the food is maybe perhaps just a visit from one of our volunteers

because many of these people will go the whole day without a human interaction or someone to wish them a merry christmas. julian: all donations are always welcome. the salvation army says its greatest need is for nonperrishable food items. most of us have regifted a christmas present at some point, but a book of candy turns out to be the gift that keeps on giving. the brothers from new hampshire/giving this book filled with life savers, remember those? they've been passing it back and forth for 34 years. each time they try to outdo the other, finding creative ways to conceal the candy. this has been going on since christmas of 1987 when ryan got some life savers as a joke. the problem was eric doesn't like life savers. >> i didn't eat them and so the next year i thought i will give it back to him. he will never remember.

>> i immediately recognized this, saw the sticker on the back. frozen, put it in jell-o. he won time sowed it into a teddy bear. julian: other people have gotten in on the joke, family, co-workers, even the sheriff's department. last year expired candy was on the menu for christmas dinner. no way those things are still good after 34 years. the soggy start to the holiday didn't stop many from finding ways to enjoy christmas. abc 7 news reporter ryan curry shows us how some people stay dry and sill brateed -- celebrated together. >> it's ary union for -- reunion for the ventura family. >> we all zoomed from like our dining room table. >> they are from southern california. every year since 1999 they have gathered as one big family on christmas day. >> it's like 20 to 25 of us. the second generation cousins

love it because they never get enough of each other. >> last year they only met virtually but this year they felt safe enough to rent a big place in san francisco. >> three of us moved from l.a. to the bay. one of my cousins goes to berkeley now. two are working here. so we thought we would meet them here this time. >> their gathering is one example of how people in the city ignored the damp weather to have some fun. whether it be walking on ocean beach, riding the ferris wheel at golden gate park, or touring the fascinating exhibits at the academy of sciences. >> our staff are enthusiastic to come here. >> the museum is open every day of the year. inside was filled with masks, santa hats and beards. being able to offer people a fun activity is their main goal. >> this is a great family activity that you could do. often families around the holidays may do their holiday celebration at home. but they're eager to get out and

about. >> whether it's learning about the environment or embracing loved ones for the first time in a while, many in san francisco seemed to have looked past the rain to make the most of this holiday. >> we weren't able to see each other at all during the pandemic. you don't really know how good you have it until you are missing it. i was taking it for granted how often we could see each other. julian: we have a rare sight to show you. light snowfall developing late christmas evening. also on mount hamilton recent storms there brought a layer of snow. highway 130 to the lick observe tory is closed due to dangerous road conditions. the visitors center is expected to open tuesday. widespread snowfall is expected at high elevations throughout the start of this week. we check back in now with meteorologist lisa argen, who strak being the forecast for us

on this sunday morning. we have rain, a gust of wind, at some point yesterday too. lisa: and we will add snow at low elevations too as we get into monday and tuesday. so temperatures around 30 degrees on top of mount hamilton, mount doo ablow -- diablo and also around mount tam. yesterday's system for once brought a good amount of rain to the south bay. anderson reservoir other areas over an inch of rain. that's a nice switch, where the north bay still got some, but at least the south bay picking up some bonus amounts. we move in closer, things have really gotten quieter the past few hours. a few scattered areas into the east bay. higher elevations still reporting that snow from mount hamilton. temperature here about 28 degrees. you can see from boulder creek, some of the upper elevation

arounds the summit there. certainly snow and into the sierra nevada, our winter storm warning continues on through tuesday, where snowfall amounts just keep coming. in fact, we could see some records here going down in history for all of the snow. really just knocking it out of the ballpark compared to the northeast and new england and vermont. they want this snow and many record temperatures of course across the nation yesterday. one to two additional feet. the problem is there are so many people and the roads are so icy that some of them have been closed altogether. the row road -- be roadways. look at the four and five feet total as we get into parts of kirkwood. it won't be until the middle of the week where we get a break. it is breezy out there. it feels even colder in spots. san francisco 46. 36 in nevada. as we look at our 24-hour

temperature change, much colder. 10 to even 16 degrees colder from livermore to santa rosa. as we look outside, the clouds are out there, but not a lot of rain right now. they will be more widely scattered this morning and then they'll pick up in intensity right into monday. if you are commuting, it's going to be wet out there with some downpours. this is a look at the sierra. amazing there as we look towards later on this morning. still some showers. look how the rain increases by 4:00 in the afternoon and then we are getting into some downpours overnight. here is your monday morning. 5:30 and by the afternoon and we still have a few showers. tuesday more rain headed our way. as we look at the totals between today, tomorrow, into tuesday, about 3/4 of an inch or better

along 280, it is wet. across the bay, it's about the snow in the upper elevations. we have seen the rain-snow mix for mount hamilton, near 30 degrees. 36 in vallejo. gill roy at 37. everyone 10 to 16 degrees colder so the plan throughout the morning hours a few widely scattered showers. look what happens by 11:00. the increase in the north bay that spreads all over the bay area by laterrian noon. then we get into level two from late sunday into monday where we could see heavier downpours. it does end by monday afternoon. we get a break and a frigid polar express heads our way. i will explain in a few minutes. julian: thank you, lisa. airlines have canceled hundreds of flights because of staffing issues tied to covid-19. more than 250 have already been canceled for today. there is no reason cited for the

>> we changed our flights to come home today. we were on vacation and we were a little worried about all that is going on, cancelses and omicron. julian: travelers at the san jose airport had better luck down there. the airport had just seven cancellations and only a handful of flight delays, none longer than just a few minutes. oakland airport reports just one cancellation on saturday. coming up on this week with the omicron variant now the dominant straight of covid in the u.s., dr. fauci will talk about president biden's plan to combat the surge and f.d.a. approval for two antiviral pills to treat covid. you can watch the full interview on this week with george stephanopoulos. it comes on at 8:00 this morning here on abc 7. president biden and first lady jill biden shared a virtual christmas message with u.s. troops around the world. the pair thanked america's military men and women for their dedication and service. pres. biden: i want you to know how much we care.

julian: happening today it is the start of the seven day kwanzaa celebration in san francisco. community based nonprofit the village project is hosting events all week long. kwanzaa marks the celebration of african culture and community. this year it will be celebrated virtually because of the pandemic. it's full of cultural entertainment, keynote speakers and music. all of the events are free. there will be an in person event at city hall tomorrow. a teacher from washington, d.c. promised her students they would get hot chocolate if she made a full court shot. no need to call off the dplas on this one because she swished it this one because she swished it in and the students go wild. juyp youmight thk ty aea had hot

14-plus in identical -- oakland. almost 10 inches in livermore. over six inches in san jose. anywhere from 160% of average to about 230% in oakland. so what a banner december we have had. here is a look at the rest of the day. 8:30 a few scattered showers. by 4:00 we are getting back into it. this is a level one system. level two system overnight. some heavy downpours. the soil is catch rated obviously, so with breezy winds and heavy downpours we could see localized flooding. otherwise we will see sun into monday afternoon and maybe a few more scattered showers into tuesday. look, they're getting more widely scattered. what we do see is in the form of snow, snow levels dropping to below 500 feet. tomorrow into tuesday. it will be exciting around here whether or not we see some snow in our inland valleys.

between monday and tuesday night looking at about a half inch in heyward, an additional 3/4 of an inch san francisco, santa and into the south bay 1/3. so more welcome rain and we have had the breaks even though some of you have had some flooding areas where some ponding on the roadways and clogged storm drains. it has been pretty beneficial. upper 40's to low 50's. julian, shivering looking at that seven day, right? julian: thank you, lisa. for many attending a worship service, it's all a part of the holiday season. church, mosque and synagogue attendance is still far behind pre-pandemic levels. i spoke with faith leader. nearly two years into the pandemic, there are more empty seats in synagogues and mosques than prior to the pandemic signaling worshipers are le luc. >> some people are wary about coming back and they're really

quite cautious. others are really coming back in droves. julian: this catholic bishop said despite ongoing covid safety protocols like proper spacing, south bay mass attendance averages between 60% and 90% of prepandemic levels depending on the church. >> we are trying to keep that balance of inviting people back and yet maintaining the safety protocol. julian: now concerns over the omicron variant are throwing congregations another curveball. a data team analysis of cell phone information estimates atinneddance at worship centers is down 22% nationwide comparing january 2020 numbers to october 2021. in santa clara county there has been a 70% decrease in attendance. >> i still think we have a long ways to go to be at attendance of pre-pandemic levels.

julian: one rabbi said attendance for services at the synagogue are only half of prepandemic levels despite san francisco having one of the higt rates in the bay area. >> it's been very difficult for us to connect community with all the different variants coming out. julian: san francisco had one of the lowest dips in attendance at worship centers at just 5% followed by highly vaccinated marin county and san mateo county. >> my wish is that san francisco and the bay area can hopefully heal from this pandemic. julian: the rabbi said he is beginning to see that healing. he was able to welcome more than is,000 people to light the bill graham menorah this person in person this year. in the south bay services continue to be live streamed across the diocese and some
