frances: we are in a stor impact scale, so a moderate storm with a cold front moving through with live doppler looming over the past few hours. check out all the snow it is bringing to the sierra, it is just getting pounded and we will get more snow throughout the day. light to moderate rain around the bay area. for today we have a moderate storm, temperatures in the 40's for the next couple of hours. it'll be windy and we get the steadiest rain during the morning hours and after lunch we will start to taperd showers tuo spotty showers, with a break this afternoon into this evening. but get ready for some very cold temperatures after this front passes through and we have a mostly clear evening. overnight temperatures t be dropping to the 20's and

30's. kumasi: the north rain people watching for mudslides. this is after a massive mudslide in that same place nearly three years ago. ryan curry is joining us live with more on this. ryan: good morning. we are here on ridgeway avenue where the crews have placed a top -- a tarp off of one hillside that had mud and debris fall close to her neighborhood. it is causing a concern for some residents. according to the city of sausalito, that area is city-owned property and they say right now it is not threatening any homes. residents say it happened close to christmas eve. this is bringing up some frightening memories for some residents. back in 2019, massive mudslides

knocked down -- knocked a home off of its foundation. with the amount of rain we are seeing recently, some fear another event similar to 2019 could happen again. >> like a freight train, 3:00 on valentine's day. ryan: a few years ago. this city installed a large pipe uphill to funnel stormwater. however, residents say they want more done because they fear that large drain is not going to be enough. with this rain continuing to fall, they say right now they are trying to be prepared for the worst case scenario. julian: thank you ryan. search-and-rescue teams will be heading out around the northstar resort in truckee to look for a missing skier who finished -- who vanished on christmas day.

family members christmas morning during white out conditions. he is said to be an experienced backcountry skier. sheriff teams spent all of yesterday looking for him but they have not found him. kumasi: the sierra is getting slammed with snow. a 70 mile stretch of 80 is closed right now. caltrans says conditions are just too dangerous. tim johns tells us how this is affecting people traveling to and from the area over the holiday weekend. tim: the sierra has been blanketed in feet of fresh snow. >> as far as christmas, this is the most snow we have had in 12 years. tim: so much has come down that caltrans closed portions of both interstates 80 and 50 on christmas day, saying they were too dangerous to drive on. >> there were some spinouts and crews were able to get a lot of the cars out. we saw some chp officers also having problems.

tim: white out conditions on many roads and caltrans officials are urging people not to try and go around the closures. >> they will hav hav getting to you if you are stuck in those country roads. think twice before trying to go around the closures. tim: caltrans will reassess road conditions on monday morning at the openings might take a little while longer. >> it is not looking good because this is a very heavy storm. tim: even when it does open back up, a little patients will still be required. set your expectations. resorts will need time to open. julian: a rockslide has closed highway one from ragged point to the elephant seal parking lot. caltrans will be back to assess the area area

problems for holiday travel. more than 2700 flights have been canceled since christmas eve. the variant has had not -- has not had much of an impact on holiday shopping. kumasi: experts are warning to prepare for possible jumps in the omicron variant as americans celebrate the holidays in close proximity with one another. this variant is extraordinarily contagious but maybe less severe . the number of infected has skyrocketed across the u.s., an average of 106 2000 americans getting sick every day -- an average of 160,000 americans getting sick every day. the number of children infected jumped 28% in just two weeks. >> the way it is going up right now, it is going to get worse before it gets better. we don't expect things will turn around in a few days. it will likely take much longer than that, but news -- but it is

unpredictable. kumasi: health officials suggest getting vaccinated and boosted. coming up, find out what you need to know if somebody you celebrated with tested positive. frances: we are starting off with live doppler seven bringing us a ton of snow and some rain in the bay area. we might even get snow on some of our mountaintops today. we are at a storm level impact scale two so we could get brief downpours with light to moderate rain during the morning hours and even the possibility of hail and thunder and lightning. some localized flooding is possible, and we are looking out for some of our highest peaks. i will show you how it will turn out over the next couple hours. we could see moderate rain. 8:00, most of the rainfall is south of the golden gate. the areas of yellow show the

more moderate rain and then we have some pink and white on the mountaintops. 10:00 this morning, it starts to taper off to scattered showers and then by lunchtime, most of us are starting to dry out. we will have clear skies but very cold air after the front passes through, turning into some light showers this afternoon, but the snow does continue in the sierra. highs today will be on the cool side. with the exception of the beaches, half moon bay and santa cruz, all at about 49 with scattered showers this afternoon. get ready for some very chilly numbers with overnight lows dropping into the 30's, near freezing for some north bay valleys and even some east bay valleys. there is a freeze watch in effect for parts of solano county where temperatures may drop into the upper 20's. protect your plants and pets and

>> this march is going to be peaceful, isn't it? >> desmond tutu, a voice for the oppressed and a voice that will load -- that will live on. julian: in the east bay, some pittsburgh police officers were assaulted after trying to arrest a suspect allegedly breaking into a store. it happened early yesterday morning. multiple suspects broke into a local store by cutting through a wall. officers were able to catch one of the suspected burglars that was kicked and spat on during the process. that suspect was booked into jail but has since been released. officers were able to recover all of those stolen items. kumasi: two chp officers are recovering this morning after they were hit by a car trying to make a traffic stop. it happened early yesterday morning. chp says the officers tried to stop a driver near canal road and after a short chase, the driver stopped and officers got out of the car.

the driver suddenly accelerated and hit the two officers. they had minor injuries and the car was later found abandoned. investigators are still looking for the driver. julian: pg&e is preparing for their work along the iron horse trail. it starts today and is expected to be done by january 22, depending on the weather. tree trimming will take parts in -- will take place in parts of unincorporated walnut creek and alamo. trails will not be closed. the work will improve trail access and safety and fire prevention. kumasi: a strong sign that hollywood is recovering from the pandemic. spider-man: no way home tightened its first play script at the box office over the christmas weekend. it is also the first pandemic era movie released to bring in more than $1 million worldwide. that happened in just 12 days. only avengers: infinity war and avengers: endgame did it faster.

disney is the parent company of both marble and abc 7 -- marvel and abc 7. julian: definitely feeling like a movie day with all of this rain out there. if you are lucky to have a few days off between christmas and the new year. frances: i think most people are, and we will have several days of movie days because we have more rain on the way. here is a look at the satellite radar image and you can see all the rain and snow in the sierra and as we zoom in, we've got widespread reign over the bay area right now. areas of yellow are where we are seeing moderate rainfall. that is in the area around redwood city. the precipitation rate is almost 2/10 of an inch per hour. brief downpours will be possible throughout the day. rainfall estimates are generally between a quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch for most everyone. most of this rain will be falling during the morning hours. in addition to the rain, tons of snow in the sierra.

things have changed and the warning has been reduced so it is going to end at 9:00 tonight instead of tomorrow morning. that is better news for people trying to get to and from the sierra. you might be able to make the drive although it might be better to wait until tomorrow. an additional three to 15 inches of snow and possibly even up to two feet of snow for some of the peaks. you can see donner, 22 inches through tomorrow morning. tomorrow, a better day to drive and hopefully the freeways will start to reopen. you saw the rain passing through and that is a cold front moving through the bay area. only upper 40's for many areas around the bay. oakland, 49. some colder numbers up in -- get ready for a very chilly night. snow levels will drop overnight to tomorrow morning. we could see some snow on the mountain tops, and then definitely more tomorrow. temperatures will be dropping into the freezing levels.

up, with all this rain, neighbors in one north bay city fear mudslides could bring -- kumasi: cancellations at bay airports -- bay area airports that are already announced. julian: the short-handed warriors could be facing more challenges this week. we will tell you about the fifth player reportedly in the nba covid protocols. kumasi: time is ticking down for tonight's powerball ticket. millions of dollars in prize money after nearly three months with no winter. julian: good morning and thanks for being with us. we are alive right now on abc seven, hulu live and wherever you stream. kumasi: we will study -- we will start with a check of our weather. it is coming down out there. frances: over the last 24 hours, we have had anywhere from a 10th of an inch to three quarters of an inch. here is a look at live doppler 7, bringing us all of that rain through the bay area with snow in the sierra.

this is a two out of five, a moderate storm. we could see brief downpours, small hail and even some lightning possible. localized flooding is a concern and snow is possible on our highest peaks. today the snow levels will drop to around 2500 feet and it will get even colder tomorrow. here is the forecast. 6:00 this morning, widespread rain and even areas of moderate rain indicate a by the yellow and orange. later this morning, it starts to push south and east and then by lunchtime, we get a little bit of a break with some spotty showers. very cold temperatures ahead. all of that coming up shortly in your accuweather 7 day forecast. julian: a neighborhood in sausalito is on high alert after fears of mudslides. a section of dirt and debris has already fallen in one neighborhood. ryan curry joins us live with more on what neighbors are fearing.

ryan: good morning. one area here in sausalito is experiencing some concerns of possible mudslides. that is going to be alarming for some residents. the good news right now is that [inaudible] having some issues with ryan's audio but we will get back with him in just a few moments for more on what is going on in sausalito. look at this. the observatory visitor center is closed because of snow. you can see families had a pretty good time playing in it. we saw people sledding and playing and taking good pictures. >> we traveled -- you don't have

to travel three hours up to lake tahoe and truckee. >> it is like i'm in a movie. kumasi: at least six inches of snow has fallen in that area. julian: folks over here trying to give them a run for their money. they made the most out of the snow that fell on mount diablo. fall on mount diablo through tomorrow. snow levels are respected to drop to 1500 feet tomorrow morning -- are expected to drop to 1500 feet tomorrow morning. kumasi: father and two young sons died in a fire in quakers town north of philadelphia. eric king and his two sons were killed. his wife and the couple's oldest son managed to escape. they were treated at a nearby

hospital for their injuries. >> i couldn't see anybody, so i thought they got everybody out. it is kind of said, really sad, to realize that not everybody was saved. kumasi: a gofundme page has now raised more than half a million dollars in just 24 hours, and the number is still going up this morning. fire investigators are looking into whether christmas lights or a dried out christmas tree might be to blame. julian: it is the christmas present the people of the palme have been waiting for for months now. they've been dealing with the direction of that volcano. it is something that has been going on for nearly 100 days. the volcano has been spewing lava, rock and ash, but a couple weeks ago the activity finally stopped and on christmas day, scientists finally gave the all clear, declaring the ear option over. kumasi: starting today, the fee to remove your -- two update

your passport is going up. the state department says it is necessary. for a full list of destinations currently open to u.s. travelers, you can visit travel. state -- travel.state.gov. the highly infectious omicron variant and winter weather is destroying travel plans for millions of americans and it couldn't be happening at a worse time as many are trying to travel home after spinning the holidays with loved ones. there are more than 600 canceled flights across major u.s. airlines today and thousands were canceled yesterday. covid is sidelining flight crews at nearly every major u.s. airline, leaving the airlines with no choice but to cancel flights. >> if you schedule more airplanes than you have pilots for, it is just a recipe for disappointment on all sides. kumasi: some bay area travelers will see a pretty rough day.

one flight has already been canceled on top of some red eyes last night. a handful were delayed in oakland and four were canceled in san jose. julian: the tsa screened more than 1.5 million people at checkpoints across the country on christmas day, a 35% increase compared to last year. airlines are advising passengers to arrive early and allow at least three hours for international travel and two hours for domestic flights. kumasi: getting together for christmas eve dinner was a big feet for one family in new york. julian: they weren't sure the meal would be possible so they had to get creative. >> it was the night before christmas when covid starting causing trouble. sorry christmas eve dinner in a bubble -- so a christmas eve dinner in a bubble. one family's creative way to socially distance going viral. big sister krista sharing the

now. we are on a store level impact scale of two. a half-inch of rain and more so -- more snow for the sierra. we could see heavier rain moving toward fremont out of san jose in the next 10 to 15 minutes. rainfall estimates generally around half an inch for most everyone around the bay but we could see anywhere from up to three quarters of an inch for some areas and even closer to an inch in some of the higher elevations. check out the temperatures right now. we are mostly in the upper 40's and our highs for today are right about the same. they will not change much from where we are. overnight lows are going to get really cold. after this front passes through we will see numbers drop to near freezing levels, especially in some of the valleys. there is also a freeze watch in effect for parts of solano county where temperatures could

drop into the upper 20's. winter storm warning in the sierra until 9:00 tonight. an additional possible two feet of snow. it was originally tuesday morning but right now it is until 9:00 at night. the seven day forecast shows a level two storm during the morning and a new system bringing us cold weather tuesday night into wednesday and then drying out this week. sue is tracking all the trouble. sue: we've got lots of traffic out there, bad weather for traffic. we've got standing water and flooding and hydroplaning so give yourself extra time. we have about 13 different solo -- solo spinouts and we will take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is holiday week week we still have a bart service delay with trains stopped due to

rain goes away, we wake up tomorrow to some very chilly numbers. tuesday, we get a break but notice another system starts to drop from our north, even colder bringing us possibly more snow and that continues overnight through wednesday. we've got several more waves and then things finally start to dry out wednesday afternoon into thursday morning. there is a winter weather advisory for parts of lake county. they could get up to another inch of snow,that will expire a0 today. there is a freeze watch tonight for solano county after this cold front passes through. we are expect and temperatures to drop into the upper 20's and low 30's, so below freezing. you want to protect sensitive plants, pets and pipes. it'll be cold for everybody with overnight lows dropping into the 30's, even san francisco down to 39 tonight.
