higher number the cdc reported. hospitalizations have gone up 25% in the last week. dan: contra costa county is tightening its mask mandate starting tomorrow. regardless of vaccination status, people will be required to wear a mask indoors. the county had an granted an exemption by the state a couple of weeks ago. health officials say today's decision is because of a rise in cases and hospitalizations over the past week. ama: we surpassed 5 million cases today since the start of the pandemic. the positivity rate has quadrupled since the start of december. we have a look now at where things stand across the state and the bay area. liz: it certainly is alarming how fast the virus is sperry -- spreading. the highly transmissible omicron variant has led to covid-19 case rates we have not seen in

months. covid-19 cases are rapidly spreading across the state. new data from the department of health shows the positivity rate is nine point 7%, the highest it has been in months. it has more than quadrupled from two weeks ago. december 15, it was just 2.3 percent. >> if you are like me, you are getting calls from friends and relatives more than you have over the past two years about i got it, what am i supposed to do? that is even in vaccinated people. it is clear we will see a lot of cases. >> every county in the bay area is seeing a surge. the latest data from the county shows cases on par with the delta surge, though not quite as high as the surge last winter. officials say there's no sign it is slowing down. >> on christmas day and gatherings that occur just before christmas and on christmas, that yielded another surge on top of the surge we

were already seeing. >> that was public health director matt willis, who expressed -- who expects cases to hit a record and the county. >> we are on track for another record-setting day in terms of case numbers. liz: there are some silver linings. hospitalizations remain low despite the rise in cases. >> right now, there are 104 people total in hospitals with covid-19. that is low, and it has been relatively stable over the past weeks. liz: transmission has also been fairly slow, vaccinated people. the blue shows transmission among vaccinated people. the orange, >> it does seem like the main thing that protects people is the level of immunity they have. >> dr. walker says ucsf is seeing a 7% positivity rate

among asymptomatic people, people who come into the hospital for other reasons and simply get tested for covid. he said a few months ago, the a symptomatic positivity rate at the hospital was .2%, so another sign the virus is spreading and spreading very fast. ama: ittttt there has been preliminary discussion of a fourth booster shot. liz: that is something that is being discussed in places like israel, and i know anecdotally, i have heard people mention they may want another booster, but dr. walter really advises against it right now. he says a third shot does seem to provide protection against omicron, and there is a possibility of over boosting. he says sometimes if you get too much of a vaccine, your body can develop immunity to the vaccine, so he says it is best to sit tight until we get more info and we continue to see how the virus spreads. dan: in the south bay, santa

clara county has issued a booster mandate for anyone working at jails or homeless shelters. health officials are preparing for an omicron surge there. >> santa clara county is taking a strategic step to keep an expected surge in omicron cases from outstripping hospital capacity. effective january 24, all workers at health care facilities must have had booster shots, which includes hospitals, long-term adult day care and mental health care facilities, jails, and other correctional facilities, and homeless shelters. >> the local order is a limited your intended is unprotected -- intended on protecting vulnerable populations, to protect the workers themselves and their coworkers, and to ensure continuity of operations in these critical sectors as cases rapidly rise. >> the new order also takes a hard line on unvaccinated workers, including those with medical or religious exemptions.

ama: today for the first time, we're hearing from the parents of a 14-year-old girl shot and killed by a stray bullet fired by a los angeles police officer. the officer was aiming at a suspect who was beating a woman with a bike lock. this comes as we now have a look at surveillance and bodycam video. >> newly released body camera video shows tense moments as a los angeles police officer open fire last week, killing a 14-year-old girl behind a wall. police say offic s attempting to apprehend the suspect who they believe was armed. officers opened fire as they claimed the girl was out of sight in a dressing room at the time. the stray bullet went through a wall and hit her. she died in her mother's arms.

snowfall and white out conditions. his ski pass was last scanned at pay lift that transports skiers to the top of the mountain. he recently moved to truckee from colorado and is the general manager at a ski shop. >> the last message i have from him was 11:15, saying he was closing up shop and going for a few runs. >> the sheriffs office says rescuers face high avalanche danger, frigid wind, and heavy snow in the search. he's an experienced backcountry skier and is believed to have been carrying avalanche gear. ama: a white out in the sierra -- look at this. this is the blizzard conditions in the sierra. 30 inches of snow fell there yesterday alone, bringing the total to almost 16 feet. dan: 16 feet? what we are getting at the sierra, too, is incredible.

it is big hassle, it is dangerous, but it is so good for the snowpack. >> this time next week we could see another storm that wants to bring feet of additional snow. we have a healthy snowpack and we want that to continue over the next couple of months. that snowpack, when it melts, it helps our reservoir. our three largest, lake shasta, lake orval, and trinity lake are anywhere from 49% to 71% of their historical average right now. that means they are still below where they typically are because of those drought years they -- that we had the last couple of years. we still need more rain to fill up our reservoirs. the next three are still anywhere from 48% to 78%, but we want that snowpack to grow and grow because we need that in the summertime when it melts. we will take you to lake and mendocino county where some of those rain showers are mixing in with snow right now, just an

indication of how old it is right now. currently, it is 45 in the city. if it stays at 45 degrees, that is our high for today, and it would make it the coldest afternoon in eight years. 42 in santa rosa. 48 in hayward. 47 right now in brentwood. still pretty unsettled across northern california. the storm not all that organized, but nonetheless, it will bring some scattered showers over the next 24 hours. overnight tonight, we will see additional cloud cover. a warm front will move through, but that leaves temperatures not as cold tonight as last night. on the storm impact scale, hail is possible tomorrow. the cold air does remain in place. 11:30, you can see scattered showers across the region, probably a mix of rain and snow in mendocino county.

dan: as covid has dominated headlines the past two years, concern about the flu really took a backseat. we saw the weakest flu season on record in fact last year. new data shows the flu is making a comeback in the u.s. every season been to other parts of the country ordinarily. >> right now, other parts of the country are seeing pre-pandemic-like flu season's. washington, d.c., has some of the highest activity.

michael: this is weird. with air travel, it seems as if it is not one thing, it is trip. now we are getting reports of strong eastbound headwinds causing flight delays and even worse, website the drive reports that yesterday and american airlines flight could not make it all the way to phoenix without making first and unplanned stop in oklahoma city to refuel. the flight arrived an hour and a half late, adding to the snarl that has been holiday air travel. home prices surged again in october as the housing market continues to boom in the wake of last year's coronavirus recession. the s&p core logic case shiller home price index released today climbed -- the index climbed 18.5% year-over-year in october. the hottest markets work phoenix, which was up 32 percent, tampa, up 28%, and

miami, just shy of 26% increase. you are going to keep paying steep prices when you rent a car. the holiday season has pointed out how difficult it can be to rent a car these days. supply chain issues have hit the industry especially hard. there are still not enough cars around, and prices are high. travel website kayak says after summer, the tight supply eased dust a bit then ramp back up over the holidays. it predicts the car-rental shortage is here to stay for at least another year. the best way to beat the high costs are to check back even after you have looked and stay away from hotspots like ski resorts in the winter and orlando ring summer break. some are predicting three more years of tight rental costs. dan: three more years? that's hard to imagine. thank you, michael. ama: here's a holiday tradition

ama: it is time now for the 4 44 four. a recent survey out of the u.k. finds that half of all colds are really covid. there's an explosion last week. they are recommending if you have cold-like symptoms, get tested for covid, even if your symptoms are mild, like just a stuffy nose. i talked about this with ucsf epidemiologist dr. george rutherford on the 3:00 p.m. show. >> i think the u.k. supposition is sobering, that half of upper respiratory infections are going to turn out to be covid.

i don't think that is true here in the bay area yet. it may well turn out to be true, but, you know, if you have severe enough of her respiratory symptoms that you don't feel well, i think it probably behooves you to try to get tested. ama: it is so hard this time of year, runny noses, allergies, jet -- just err on the side of caution. chris: i think that is the scary thing about where we are at with this time a thing. the winter, the weather changes, you could be run down because people are not sleeping as much, you are running around and traveling. i guess stay home or qu stay if you feel symptoms. the difficulty is my just have a cold, but so many cold symptoms are true of covid as well. drew: i play this kind of game, like mi stressed out, or is it covid? chris: it is not a fun game. drew: if at any time i am

feeling under the weather, i would stay home and wait until i can get a test even though those tests are harder and harder to get right now. the smartest thing to do is just stay-at-home. dan: at least five people have been arrested following a vaccine mandate protest at a burger king in brooklyn. dan: a large group of activists face off with police officers. they failed to show proof of vaccination and refused to leave the restaurant. at least one of those taken into custody was arrested for taking part in a similar protest two weeks ago at another restaurant. i would love your take on this. restaurants have had a hard enough time. protest somewhere that does not completely shut down the restaurant. it does not seem completely fair. >> i think at this point, everyone has kind of chosen a

mount hamilton is normally the most popular place here in the south bay to check out the beautiful snow in the winter time, but road closures, all you can see and hear is nature's natural beauty. >> is a truly beautiful. i get to enjoy it with my son. we have your own little sled hill in the driveway right now, so it is very nice. dustin: weather conditions led to fallen trees and the road closure. on the east side of the mountain, the roads remained unplowed. only residents of the mountain could enjoy the views. >> i grew up in a place where there was lots of snow in the backyard, so it is nice to take the kids to see the snow. dustin: our hidden gem, a taste of tahoe in the south bay. ama: dan: snow angels, we have not done that in a long time. ama: i did it over the weekend.
