caring and compassionate and always went out of his way quietly to help people who needed help. harry reid was 82. ama: let's turn now to the pandemic. if you haven't heard the warning bells before, the ones ringing today are loud and clear. >> right now where we are is in place that is different than we've ever been in the pandemic. dan: late this afternoon, san francisco announced it is canceling its new year's eve fireworks show. it's the second straight year the fireworks show will not be held. the mayor and other cited concerns and the surgeon covid cases, particularly with the omicron variant and the potential risk to public health and safety. california is the first state in a country to top 5 million reported coronavirus cases. the news broke today in the states first update since the christmas break. ama: the percentage of covid test coming back positive

approach to number we have not seen all year. dan: liz, explain what you are finding out. liz: it is certainly alarming how fast a virus is spreading right now. the positivity rating california has more than quadrupled in the last two weeks. in san francisco, cases are rising at triple the rate they were during the delta summer surge. new data from the california department of health shows positivity rate is 9.7%, the highest it has been in months. that's more than quadrupled from two weeks ago. on december 15 it was just 2.3%. >> if you're like me, you're getting calls from friends and relatives about being exposed are getting it. it is clear that we will see a lot of cases. >> every county in the bay area

is seeing a surge. san francisco data shows an average of more than 300 you cases per day, on par with cases during the delta surge, although not as high as the surge last winter. health officials say there is no sign the numbers are slowing down. >> on christmas day and gathers that occurred -- -- gatherings that occurred before christmas. >> matt willis expects marin to hit a record for cases in the county. >> we are on track for another record-setting day in terms of case numbers. that is today. >> there are some silverlining's. despite the rising cases, hospitalizations remain low. >> right now the number is low and it has been stable over the last few weeks. >> transmission is much lower of

those who are vaccinated. the blue shows transmission among vaccinated people the orange is among unvaccinated people. in alameda county, blue's vaccinated, the yellow is unvaccinated. >> it does seem like the main thing that protects people is the level of immunity they have. >> and marin county is planning to update its indoor mask guidance because of the increased spread. the doctor seeing a 7% positivity rate among asymptomatic people. he said a few months ago the asymptomatic positivity rate at the hospital was .2%, so another sign that the virus is spreading fast. dan: there has been some preliminary discussion of another booster shot, a fourth shot. is that something we should be thinking about? >> it is being discussed in places like israel and i've heard people mention they want another booster.

but the doctor advises against it right now. he says the third shot does seem to provided -- provide protection against omicron. he says sometimes if you get too much of a vaccine, your body can develop an immunity to the vaccine. he says that is best to sit tight and wait until we get more info and see how the virus continues to spread. ama: just the past few hours we learned that mask rules are getting stricter in contra costa county. the counties shaded in yellow allow an exemption for certain controlled environments like gyms and offices. that is the exemption that contra costa eliminated today. >> it became a no-brainer when we saw what was happening on the east coast. it became clear that this was an important step to protect the

community. ama: contra costa county said there was a 229% increase between december 9-23. late this afternoon we learned sonoma county is now strongly urging employers to require workers to get their booster shots. at this time it is a recommendation for private companies. the county is requiring booster shots for emergency workers, school employees and elf care workers gloating pharmacists and dentists. dan: senator county is encouraging employers to require booster shots. today the county issued a booster mandate for anyone working in health care facilities, jails, or homeless shelters. >> it is intended to focus on protecting vulnerable populations that these workers interact with, to protect the workers themselves and their coworkers and to ensure continuity of operation in these critical sectors as cases

dan: as covid has dominated the headlines for the past two years, concerns about -- new cdc data shows the flu is making a comeback this year. our reporter spoke with the local doctor about what we can expect here in california. >> food comes -- the flu later to california every season then to other parts of the country ordinarily. >> other parts of the country are seeing pre-pandemic flu like seasons. the cdc says seven states also have high activity. california is not included in that, but this doctor says we may not be far behind. >> we haven't even gotten into the real peak influenza season, which may not be until february. >> in t t t t t t t t t

during the holidays. imagine you are hosting a gathering and a call comes in saying it is pg&e and that you didn't pay your bill and your power is about ready to be turned off. victims panic, they send in their money, only of course, it is not the real pg&e. >> they had had h trucks were on their way to my house to shut the power off. >> he was just waking on a saturday morning when the call came in. >> the caller id looked legitimate. it's a guy who sounds very convincing. >> the man on the phone said douglas's utility bill was passed to an pg&e was on its way to shut off power, and it was almost too late to stop it. >> i asked the guy if i could pay with a credit card. he said no, there was just not enough time. the only way was to pay using zelle.

chris: for every football fan, in wet -- in some way, shape, or form, they have been influenced by john madden. he is being remembered across the sports world for his contributions to the game. >> ladies and gentlemen great john madden. >> john fame induction was a culmination of a lifetime of work devoted to the game of football, and in particular, to the oakland raiders. john earl madden was born april 10, 1936 in austin, minnesota.

he grew up in daly city and would attend jefferson high school with collegiate stops in oregon, college of san mateo, and then cal poly san luis obispo where he played both football and baseball. a knee injury prevented him from ever playing pro ball. his attention quickly turned to coaching. in 1960 he began working his way up the college ranks. the year was 1967 when al davis lured madden away from san diego state, hiring him as linebackers coach of the raiders. in 1969, he was promoted to head coach, making him at 32 the youngest to hold that title in professional football. >> he was not only a mentor to me, he gave me my first opportunity. >> under his guidance, the raiders would become perennial title contenders. the region lost five title games
