with more dirt than snow. not this year. >> our survey today water content of 20 inches which results in 202% today too. reporter: that means if it stopped snowing today, the sierra would have 4/5 of the snow. >> with all of that rain, climbed all of our watersheds. any future rain or snow would run off. reporter: california water experts caution against too much optimism too soon. well below the snowing mountain, some reservoirs are below where they should be for this time of year. shasta, 49% of average.

but folsom is already brimming. state water managers are considering releasing some water. a great start does not always end with a bountiful water supply. in 2013, december was great but the spigot abruptly shut off. >> that is why we still need february -- january, february, and march to come in. anchor: encouraging at this moment in the rainy season. anchor 2: let's get to spencer christian who joins us with more. spencer? meteorologist: this is encouraging news. let's go back to the drought map to look at the improvement. you can see what the situation was last week. the entire bay area was under extreme to exceptional drought but thanks to the recent rain, things have changed and it looks very encouraging.

we are in severe drought, in most of the bay area, still significant but an improvement. the reason we have had such improvement is the rain fall season to date. since october 1, we have had a tremendous amount of rainfall. oakland at 231% of average at this point in the rain season. and over the sierra, snowpack is looking good so far. i emphasize "so far." there is more rain on the way next week which will continue to move us in a more positive direction. dan: here is a look at in the tahoe area. there are currently no train can -- chain controls but you should still be prepared for delays.

and another storm coming. caltrans said you should download its quick map app to access changes. in southern california, all lanes of interstate five over the grapevine are closed because of snow and ice. there is no expected time to reopen that stretch of road but caltrans did open the snow gate allowing northbound traffic to make a u-turn and go south. ama: more than 10 million people are expected to fly over the next few days but severe weather and the explosion in covid cases are causing severe headaches. reporter: frustrations at many are rare -- at many airports as flyers face cancellations and delays. seattle had the most cancellations. in the world. for the third day in a row. >> i have to find my luggage. reporter: luggage piling up as winter weather is wreaking

havoc. the main hub for alaska airlines -- some passengers calling to check in on flights waiting 20 hours on hold. since christmas eve, more 80,000 flights have been canceled due to weather and covid-19 sick calls causing staff shortages at several airlines. >> we are seeing a lot of people out sick. but also people whose anxiety is rising again. it is adding a lot of stress and strain all the way around. reporter: worries on the roads also. an out-of-control suv slid on icy roads heading a parked car. no one was hurt. and out west, road crews preparing for another round of heavy mountain snow and torrential rain. and the worst could still come. january 2 and third expected to be the busiest travel days. >> we tried to get here as early

as we could because of the delays that we are waiting. reporter: more severe weather expected across much of the u.s. meaning travel troubles will likely continue into the new year. anchor: new golden state warriors game scheduled for tonight and denver has been postponed. the nuggets do not have the league required eight available players because of players in covid protocols. warriors game is january 1 against the utah jazz. california's test positive -- positivity rate is up to 12.9%. there are reports that pfizer booster shots will be approved on monday for 12-15-year-olds and the cdc award -- and the cdc warning americans to avoid cruises regardless of vaccination status. there have been reports of covid outbreaks on board. some mega events such for new

year's eve are still on despite many other celebrations being canceled. abc 7 news reporter, stephanie is in the newsroom. reporter: while some events are being canceled, other parties with hundreds of people attending in close quarters are still happening and doctors tell us those could be super-spreader events. the next two weeks will be the most infectious period of our omicron search. on the eve of new year's eve, a tale of very different parties. in marin, empty tables. >> i will be really bummed that we cannot go. reporter: mike donahue is relieved that the yacht club canceled the new year's eve ball. >> a lot of fear of omicron. reporter: some are prioritizing safety while others are setting sail with sizable risks.

in san francisco, 400 people are attending a new year's eve yacht party. proof of vaccination is required but large gatherings like these are considered high risk even for people that have received boosters. >> i think people need to be careful. attend smaller events to the greatest extent possible. attend events where everyone has been vaccinated and boosted and keep your masks on if you are entering large indoor events. reporter: dr. george rutherford warns the next few weeks will be the most critical in this omicron surge as it now accounts for 50%-70% of new covid cases across the stage. what would be your threshold? >> a handful of couples. the 200 person event is going to be tough. reporter: as you are scrolling through contemplating your plans

ama: multiple grass fires are burning in colorado tonight fueled by strong winds, some peaking at 100 miles per hour. look at those flames. i've hundred 80 homes have already been destroyed. emergency officials have ordered

thousands of people to have arcuate from superior in louisville. authorities believe down to power lines may have sparked two of the fires. and heavy snow is expected tomorrow. dan: let's go back to the sierra to talk about conditions there. this is time lapse video from yesterday at lake ho from -- at lake tahoe from this morning kevin cooper runs a consulting firm for ski resorts. he joins us now. thank you for being with us. >> thank you for having me. a beautiful night. a break in the storm so it feels good. dan: tell me about that break. a couple of days. give me a sense of the conditions. >> we will get about an inch tonight. a record system.system.system.s. we broke a record in december of 1970. we are looking at 193.7

december. most ski resorts are recording about 19 feet of snow in december. look across the area, skiing could not be better. whether you are cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, everything is good. there is some activity so we need to be careful in the backcountry but the resorts are flying with 100% of their terrain open. dan: you gave us great advice the other day in the middle of a storm, don't come up now. it is a risk and dangerous. things have changed. what are your recommendations for people that want to take advantage of the traffic snow? >> have a plan. caltrans, city and state and the

snow removal crews are catching up. we have not seen a plow in the county in two days and some streets are not plowed. be ready. have chains, flares, shovels cell phone, a full tank of gas, extra food and sleeping bags. be prepared for a long hall. two days ago, we were in gridlock here at southlake tahoe and on the north shore. it took people 16 hours from the top to get down into sacramento. have yourself plenty of time. everyone wants to recreate, slow your roll and have a good time with a good plan. dan: this is terrific news for the resorts and for a long ski season after the roads become more possible but more importantly as we discussed earlier tonight, it is more important for the snowpack and it is great news in terms of the california drought. >> that is a great question. i was looking at the new snow

survey at phillips. 202ghway 50. that is great news. over 20 inches of snow-water equivalency is in that snowpack setting us up in the winter. even a mild january but a good february and a consistent march and april, we might have 100% of our snowpack. but you know this, that is not enough to get us out of the drought. it will help us. we need to have a huge winter. 300% of normal to put a dent into it that we will take anything we can get right now with the snowpack and water. we are going into another fire season after this winter so we need to be prepared and have our reservoirs up to speed. dan: you are getting it for the moment. kevin cooper, thank you for coming on. you to full behind you. thank you. >> take care and have a happy

new year. ama: i like the dog also. subzero weather is about to return to alaska after record warmth over the weekend. kodiak island set a record on sunday hitting 67 degrees. far warmer than the bay area or temperatures barely hit the 50's. fairbanks and the more northern reaches of the state have set records for a wet just december. change is coming. the high temperature next thursday will be 30 degrees below zero. i would not last. dan: it is all so weird. we are having alaska weather here in terms of the cold. ama: we spoke to relatives in michigan and it was warmer there then it was here. it is crazy, spencer. spencer: it is pretty crazy.

with fairbanks heading to freezing from where it was. are predictable. the climate is changing. look at what is happening right now in the bay area. look at live doppler seven. a different picture from this time yesterday. we are seeing no returns which means it is dry. light wind although it is breezy at the coast. because of the light wind and sunny skies, we have had a warm up from yesterday. most areas are about 5-7 degrees warmer than at this time yesterday. here we go with a look at the current temperature readings. san francisco, 51 degrees. san jose, 52. half moon bay, 53. a lovely view of the golden state. temperature readings, 52. just about everywhere. santa rosa, napa county.

50's. sunny but cool. looking ahead, more rain on the way starting midnight sunday night or 12:00 a.m. monday. snow in the sierra. rain tuesday or wednesday with snow in the sierra. the pattern continues through wednesday before it starts to taper off a bit on thursday. looking at rainfall totals that are not huge. in the bay area a quarter of an inch or lower. here is the accuweather 7 day forecast. three cold mornings coming our way through sunday. clouds increase on january 2. monday, tuesday, and wednesday, we are expecting level 1 storm activity in the bay area with rain and wind. by thursday, we should see the rain winding down. things can change between now and thursday but at the moment, we are looking at three days of wet weather to start next week. dan: spencer, thank you.

ama: global supply chain issues helped lead to inflation not seen in decades with prices skyrocketing. economics -- economic experts say those costs will likely stick around with pent-up demand. dan sullivan has a look at what

items might cost more. reporter: from the supermarket to the gas pump, ongoing supply chain problems and surging covid didn't -- surging covid issues are causing higher prices. the latest food price index found global food prices are at the highest level in a decade and experts worry continued disruptions from the pandemic like labor shortages and fertilizer could make things worse. >> prices have gone up quite a bit. double or triple, some of the fertilizer prices and farmers are facing difficulties getting the things they need to produce. reporter: also likely returning next year, more pain at the pump. a new gas buddy forecast predicts prices might climb to more than four dollars per gallon by memorial day. >> gas demand will be strong. that is likely behind the push, the increase in gas prices we are anticipating for the year ahead. reporter: prices for

electronics, clothing, and furniture could also jump next year according to a u.n. report saying prices could rise by more than 10% globally due to high shipping costs. economists warn that scramble -- supply chains could be scrambled further. >> in china, they will shut down and if they shut down, it has impacts on all the supply chain that originate in asia. reporter: the cost of owning a home is also expected to stay high. average home prices skyrocketed nearly 20% through the third quarter of 2021 compared to a year ago. dan: in the final day or so of 2021, mortgage rates are also rising. ama: we have a look at that and more consumer headlines. reporter: they are going up and they will go up more appeared the average rate on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage is still pretty good, 3.11%.

good but higher than last december when average rates were 2.67 percent. 15 year fixed-rate mortgages are creeping up as well. last december, 2.17% but this week, 2.33%. ready max chief economist says continuing rise in rates will occur. tesla has issued two recalls affecting nearly half a million vehicles. every model three sedan sold in the u.s. as part of this because of a potential flaw in the backup camera system. tesla says opening and closing the trunk repeatedly as we all do could wear on a cable connecting the cable to the display system. the second recall for the 2014 through the 2021 model s hatchbacks because of an issue with a safety latch on the front trunk which could lead to the trunk opening while the car is

moving. in case you missed this in the news yesterday, two more covid-19 at home test kits have been authorized for emergency use by the furred -- food and drug administration they -- and they are expected to be on store shelves in january. with these two, there are currently 15 at home test kits that will be available to the public. you can expect to see the rollout of more tests due to a $70 million investment from the federal government. we were wondering today, how do you know if it is authorized or not? we cannot find any way to do that so if you are ordering off -- online from a sketchy company, i would think twice about that. dan: that is interesting that it is hard to verify. the founder and ceo of a nonprofit has been suspended and she speaks exclusively to the

>> tilting a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. ama: black girls code with the mission of training black girls in coding and other tech skills is making headlines. the founder and ceo has been suspended over allegations of misconduct and she is breaking her silence than interview. it is a story that you will only see on seven. >> i certainly did not anticipate being in the position to have this conversation with you today. reporter: oakland-based

nonprofit black girls code has provided mentorship around the world introducing them to code in an effort to close the gender gap in tech. the founder and ceo, kimberly bryant is trying to crack this code. >> i am unclear about why this action was taken. reporter: she sat down for an exclusive interview responding to allegations of misconduct that has or suspended from the nonprofit that she founded 10 years ago. you think an investigation into the allegations that have surfaced is warranted? >> if there are issues that have been surfaced from anyone on the organizational team, we owe it to our community and the girls that we serve to fully investigate those issues. reporter: in a statement abc 7 news, the special committee of the board of directors said in part, earlier this year, the board became aware of concerns

raised by current and former employees about the conduct of miss bryant. to ensure a full and fair review process earlier this week, the committee placed her on administrative leave. what do you hope this investigation finds? >> the truth. reporter: the board of directors declined to expand on the allegations but the tech outlet, techcrunch, spoke to several former employees anonymously who described her leadership style as rooted in fear where managers were publicly paraded. anonymous reviews on glassdoor described a toxic work environment for black women with a ceo that continues to be the problem. is this criticism true? >> i am not here to say our organization is a perfect place but i am saying that the efforts we have invested is what will make us a great place to work in the future. reporter: she said the investments included hiring consultants to work with the

team and getting to the bottom of high term -- and getting to the bottom of high turnover during the pandemic. >> i am for an investigation because i think i will be fully vindicated. reporter: the board did not specify the timeline of the investigation. julian glover, abc 7 news. dan: we will keep you updated on that story. meanwhile, a violent dog napping and los angeles is caught on camera. a man was attacked while walking his french bulldog. reporter: what started as a normal walk in the morning turned into a nightmare for robert and his french bulldog. >> he is a special little dog. i never really understood the connection -- that people have. reporter: in dramatic surveillance video, you see a car take off dragging him down

the street. >> i grabbed onto the handle and hung on hoping they would stop the car. reporter: inside the black sedan, his dog and two thieves. this video is part of the investigation into the alleged robbery. french bulldogs like luca can fetch up to $5,000 and sometimes even more. in february, a video of lady gaga's dogs being stolen and her dog walker being shot. >> i am so grateful my dogs are alive and i am so grateful that my friend, ryan fisher, is alive and the fact that he was shot was so outrageous and painful and i pray for his healing all the time. reporter: thieves are targeting high-value dogs.

>> it is a prevalent problem especially among smaller breeds. reporter: he is recovering from burns and offering a $10,000 reward for luca. >> i am hoping that motivates someone to return him. i am just really hoping someone will return the dog. reporter: here is what you can do to protect yourself and your dog. you can chip your furry friend. you can also change up your walk routine. make sure you are not outside at dark. and pay close attention to social media. if you posted a picture with your dog, turn off the location services and think about those hashtags because dog mappers are looking at it all. ama: just awful. this march -- this year marked 20 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks and on christmas, there was a virtual

reunion with one of the first people to learn about the attack and the airline attendant, betty long. dan: a reporter from our sister station in raleigh, north carolina has this story on how strangers 3000 miles apart consider themselves family. >> we don't need 9/11. reporter: this is where history starts. she was a flight attendant aboard flight 11 grabbed the phone from the back of the plane and dialed the reservation center. it was just before 8:30 a.m. on september 11, >> my name is betty. i am on flight 11. someone has been business class. reporter: for nearly 20 minutes, she relayed information to

managers at american airlines. at 8:46, the call dropped. flight 11 slammed into the north tower. betty never had the chance to call her family but today, more than 20 years after 9/11 -- >> it is my honor and pleasure to reintroduce you to vanessa. reporter: we helped vanessa vana connect with the family of betty because she is still wanting to make up for that. >> she was absolutely amazing. she was a fine, young lady and professional in everything she did on that call. i don't know if i could have that. >> my biggest feeling was that i could not be there to defend her and protect her. >> even your culture,ture,ture, same way. i could not understand why it

fell into my phone. i could not make her feel better. i could not say anything to make her feel better. and it just was not fair that she did not get to call you, your sister, or her mother. >> i would have to say that she called the right person. >> i appreciate that. reporter: they did meet once before. they were interviewed by diane sawyer in 2001. he also wrote a letter to the family in san francisco and in september, abc 11 interviewing him to commemorate the anniversary. kgo, showing the interview to harry who then surprised all of us when he pulled out vanessa's letter that he received two decades ago. what better way to celebrate the

20. she headed to the bathroom and took a rapid test and she had covid. >> i freaked out. i ran out of the bathroom. ama: rocky sent her back to the bathroom where she spent the next four hours in isolation. the teacher passed the time taking tiktok videos. she enjoyed snacks and drinks. when the plane landed in iceland, she was taken to the red cross hotel where she spent 10 days in quarantine. a flight attendant coming through helping to make her more comfortable dropping off a care package with food and gifts. that flight attendant went above and beyond. dan: absolutely. at least the bathrooms are roomy and spacious with room to spread out. [laughter] but the flight attendant did do a great job and probably there was some protocol, a plan in place if something like this

were to happen. ama: nice job. stuck in the bathroom for four hours? >> i cannot imagine. just going in there, your scrunched. four hours later? that is crazy. what do you do? at least the flight attendant made the stay a nicer time. other passengers were asking for more snacks. >> why didn't she test herself before she left? i do think the flight attendant was remarkable but i don't know, i feel like i'm missing information. dan: maybe she did not have any symptoms. >> i hope that is it. dan: to say the lines for covid testing are moving slowly is an understatement. we have this video of a turtle walking past his vehicle while he waited for his test yesterday in boca raton, florida. he said he waited in line for

about four hours. he thought it was necessary. covid is bad in florida appeared the state reporting nearly 47,000 new cases on tuesday setting the highest single day record since the beginning of the pandemic. a classic video. it was that slow that a turtle was outpacing him. ama: the turtle was cooking. >> maybe the turtle was trying to get tested. [laughter] it is a funny piece of video and relatable but i am surprised and a little annoyed that we are here again. at the beginning of the pandemic, we did not have paper towels and rubber gloves and the things that we needed. how can we be short on tests? >> let's just say the turtle is my hero. he needs where she needs to be 7 on your side's mascot. all of government and all of business have

slow pace in covid. now, we have these long lines with people waiting and we don't have tests after two years? dan: how can that be? ama: i was talking to a teacher today who said, they have testing centers within the district where anyone in the community can get it and she said, it used to be 10 minutes to wait and now it is a few hours. granted the surge and many have stocked up on the rapid tests. dan: a lot of people will just say -- i'm not going to wait. ama: let's talk about resolutions. a most -- a popular one has to do with weight and fitness. >> when we resolve as individuals to try to lose weight, it comes from a place of shame and stigma. it often does not come from a place about concern regarding

health. i think part of the problem is that we see those things as related. ama: she says wanting to be fit is not a bad goal but when we connect it with a resolution to lose weight, we set ourselves up to failure. she says you cannot tell someone's health from their bmi number. people can be healthy across these size spectrum. you can be a normal bmi and have diabetes. but america has decided that your size equals health. i don't know when we are going to catch on to the science of it all. dan: the shame aspect is really troubling. although we do know that if you carry a lot of extra weight, it is a risk factor for some other diseases so from a health standpoint it can be important but you can also be healthy and perfectly healthy. ama: what do you feel about the new year's resolutions? >>

life more. ama: yes. >> how does that sound? ama: great. michael? >> the resolution is as i stand on the scale, it is an ongoing hassle of life. it is not a direct translation into health but it sometimes can signal there is an issue. you need to stay on it. dan: a trainer told me this that i've never forgotten, we all worry about eating during the holidays and he said, it does not matter what uep between thanksgiving and christmas. it matters what you eat between christmas and thanksgiving. relax for the holidays. millions of people will ring in the new year with a traditional glass of champagne but for others, tradition revolves around what you eat. southern tradition calls for black-eyed peas. a traditional japanese new year's eve meal includes roasted

duck and people in italy eat lentils. i grew up in the south and grew up with hopp and john, a traditional meal for good luck and collard greens are for prosperity and good luck. is there any traditional food that you like? >> i don't have any traditional food. it is what my heart desires at that moment. ama: nothing for me but i think i had 15 grapes. i guess i did not wait until new year's eve. dan: michael? is there anything you like? >> my family has always honored our irish heritage by getting out the irish whiskey and doing some irish coffees. the one tip i will give you is that whip cream should not get anywhere near an irish copy. -- irish coffee. it is heavy whipped cream. dan: we will do it right
