we are dealing with completely opposite conditions. after all of the rain and snow, we finally see a difference in our drought? today we got the answer. yes, there is a difference. a significant difference since last week, the majority of the state has dropped from extreme to severe drought, changing from red to orange in color. bay area falls into those two categories. just a little bit of far northern california remains in the worst category, exceptional drought. this is great progress. as good as it looks, what really matters for our water outlook is what is left in the spring. here's abc 7 news reported more anthony. reporter: what a difference a few good storms make. in california, snow surveys this past march was sometimes conducted with more dirt than snow. not this year, not by a longshot. >> are surveyed today purported to snow depth of 78.5 inches and

snow water content of 20 inches. that results in 202% of average today. reporter: if it stopped snowing today, this year would already have 4/5 of the average snowfall for the entire season, ending april 1. overall, the statewide snowpack is 160% of average for this date. >> with all that rain, it climbed our watershed so any future rain or snow would be able to run off. reporter: it is a bounty for sure. california water experts caution against too much optimism too soon. here, well below the snowing mountains, reservoirs are still below where they should be this time of year. shasta, just 49% of average. lake orville, 72%. folsom is already brimming. state water man shares are thinking of date -- state water managers are thinking of releasing some. reporter: in 2013, the water was

very encouraging. revisit the snowpack. it is worth looking at it again. statewide we are at 100 60% of average -- 160% of average. entire bay area was under either extreme or exceptional drought. such improvement, still a serious condition. most of the area is at least severe drought category. a small part of the east bay is an extreme drought. a vast improvement over a couple weeks ago. starting midnight sunday into monday, we get our first wave of rain and a mix of rain and snow in the sierra. that pattern continues into when -- tuesday and wednesday before tapering off a bit on thursday. another generous serving of rainfall. the rainfall totals are not going to be huge, about .25 inches or more for much of the bay area which will keep us in

home. awful. high winds pushed flames, which have burned down more than 500 homes. these are the conditions that when they happen here, pg&e preemptively shuts off the power. as far as we know it, that did not happen in colorado. downed power lines are being blamed for starting this fire. winds are expected to diminish as the night goes on and snow is on the way. denver is in the midst of its warmest and driest period on record, with temperatures lately about 20 degrees above average. dan: the winds whipping miles an hour. black girls code, eight bay area nonprofit is making headlines tonight. the founder and ceo has been suspended over allegations of misconduct. she is breaking her silence in an interview with abc 7 news reporter race and culture reporter in a story you will see only on seven. >> i certainly did not anticipate being in the position

dan: another look at colorado. a house is burning to the ground. these are live pictures as it happens. it is one of more than 500 that flames destroyed today in boulder county. that is outside of denver. fire sparked this morning and spread quickly because of high winds. it is possible downed power lines are to blame. we are keeping an eye on the situation throughout this newscast. we will keep you updated of this breaking news in the denver area. ama: the approaching new year means some people are making resolutions.

happening. we will keep you updated this hour. that's move on to a story tonight of survival the enters a new chapter. a bay area travel blogger who suffered horrific injuries in bali this past summer walked out of a southbay hospital today. ama: now she starts a new phase in her recovery. abc news reported zacks went has explains why the sub she took outside the hospital dora being called a miracle. reporter: this is caitlin mccaffrey, walking out of santa clara county medical center today. marking a major milestone in her recovery. her trips around the world a big personality captivated her 11,000 plus instagram followers. her post last post on july 30 celebrated her two-month stay in bali. one day after that, she was in a motor scooter accident. found by good samaritans, unconscious with life-threatening injuries. >> i don't remember the accident, probably for good reason. reporter: her injuries were so

dan: this past september marked 20 years since the 9/11 terror attacks. on this last christmas, there was a virtual reunion between one of the first people to learn about the attacks and the family of a flight attendant in san francisco who was working on the first plane that crashed into the world trade center. reporter from our story - sister station in north carolina reports how strangers 3000 miles apart consider each other family. >> i think of her every day.
