investigating a shooting. one person was shot around 3:45 this afternoon. the gunfire sent shoppers grambling for cover. >> they were running out. everybody was running out. there was a body half dead, bleeding a lot from his left side. >> the victim was taken to the medical center at walnut creek. the extent of the injuries is not known at this time. police won't say if the suspect is in custody. there's no threat to the public. the mall was put on lockdown and is now closed for the evening. >> good evening and thank you for joining us. dan: tonight, we honor betty white. she died today at the age of 99. an award-winning actress and national treasure whose on-screen career spanned decades. >> if felix use me, i have i hae rake someone's tail over the coals.

ama: the depths of her charm and influence is obvious. social media it up with the news. >> fans began gathering at her star on hollywood walk of fame. many place for hours -- placed flowers. betty white died less than three weeks before her 100th birthday. ama: many are reacting to the passing of betty white. from animal advocates to stage performers. everyone agrees she was the real deal. here's cornell benard. >> i'm devastated. she's my hero. one of my all-time icons. really, such a comedic genius. reporter: betty white was a hero. meyer's imaginary plane it over me. reporter: he says betty made it

>> she was a kind person. i saw a couple videos of her talking to different celebrities. i tried to capture her being happy. dan: he sure did. tyler says he painted the roses around her image because of her character rose on the golden girls. we used our news app to send out a push alert when betty white died today. download it so you will find out about breaking news as it happens. ama: officials are calling yesterday's fire the most destructive in-state history. the governor says the fast-moving fire destroyed 1000 homes. officials say it's likely the fire was sparked by power lines down by strong winds. there are no casualties reported. some residents are still unsure if their homes survive. >> we can tell that things look ok from up here. there is smoldering in the area. until we get down there, it's impossible to know. we find places to stay and hope for the best. ama: officials hope the six

inches of snow will help firefighting efforts. the president has granted an emergency declaration for recovery funds. so heartbreaking. certainly no fire danger here for us right now. we are expecting a cold and clear time -- night tonight. dan: spencer christian is here with the forecast. spencer: all right. it's going to be cold enough to snow. that's not going to happen here. here's a look at current temperatures. they have dropped into the 40's and every bay area location already and will continue dropping into the overnight hours. lows will drop into the upper 20's. santa rosa, lakeport, ukiah. other locations, low 30's. it's going to be a very chilly new year's eve and actually start to new year's day. highs tomorrow will get up to about 51 degrees around the bay shoreline. emmett -- many in the locations will have highs in the upper

40's. on monday, rain returns to the bay area. we have a rating pattern that will continue through the middle of next week. i will give you all the details in my accuweather 7 day forecast a little bit later. thank you. dan: california's test positively rate climbs to almost 16%, more than 1500 flights are canceled today. airlines blame shortages because of the omicron search. that's the same reason why new year's eve celebrations are being condensed or canceled altogether. parents picked up free covid test kits today, testing all students in the castro valley unified school district before they return to class on monday. david louis explains how this giveaway will soon expand. reporter: the castro valley unified school district organized its giveaway by having parents drive by to pick up their free test kits.

one kit for each student, each kit containing two tests. the district wants one's test to be administered now and the other on sunday ahead of classes resuming on monday. if the test is positive, the parent must report the results. >> their parents also know that's the student needs to stay home. our nurses and staff follow up with the family to make sure that they quarantine the number of days they are supposed to and as light. reporter: this is part of a program governor newsom announced last week to provide 6 million at home covid tests for all public and charter school students. the eye health kit has a retail value of $14. it's an antigen test that involves a nasal swab. the results are a ready in 15 minutes. align indicates a positive test. a quarter million students across alameda county in 18 districts will also receive the test kits. each district will decide how to

downloading our bay area app. as pediatric covid cases continue to be a nationwide concern, popular family destination is working to bring vaccines and a free experience to local kids. zack went tests has the story. reporter: more than 2100 kids across the country have been hospitalized this week with confirmed or suspected cases of covid. that's up by 800 according to federal data. new york's cases remaining the worst. i spoke with a stanford doctor about the local outlook. >> i expect the same thing would happen here. reporter: the vaccine only approved for kids five and up. he says the best way to print -- protect kids younger than that is keep close watch around who they are around. >> their only protection is staying away from people who aren't protected. that means their family members should be vaccinated. reporter: the children's discovery museum is hoping to help families get vaccinated.

they teamed up with santa clara county public health and other partners to get families a chance to get vaccinated this sunday and enjoy the museum for free. >> you just show up and lineup. it runs from 9:30 to 4:30. reporter: each family gets a free pass to the museum, good for one visit for up to eight people. you can use it the day up -- of our six months after. the museum says the recent headlines have pushed them to work on more dates. >> when we started reading those reports coming out of new york about the hospitalizations for very young children, we became -- we redoubled our efforts. reporter: the museum hopes each clinic is a step closer to getting kids back to pre-pandemic life. >> we believe that by helping families come up with an easy way to engage in vaccinations, or you can get the vaccination done but also treat the family to a fun thing, that will make a difference for some families. ama: up next, look at the first

january 10. looks like they are going to play georgia, georgia leading 27-3 over michigan at the half. as we close the book on 2021, 2022 will mark the return of klay thompson. he is so close to coming back. i mean, really close for the warriors who put out a video of him scrimmaging with the team this after two years out with a.c.l. surgeries. january 3 seems to be too soon. january 9 against cleveland? quite possible. january 18 is the start of a seven-game homestand. he is ready but he tempering expectations. >> there's times throughout the lengthy process where you might doubt yourself as a player. honestly, i want to feel like myself. i think it's going to take a few games, may a few weeks to get to be an all-star again. larry: it's going to be electric

drugs made desolate the weakening eye of day. the darkling thrush by thomas hardy, my favorite palm ever since i first read it in college as an angle is major. harding describes a sense of despair as the 19th century draws to a close. a lament at the death of the familiarity of the old world, giving way to the uncertainty and change of the coming 20th. i always revisit the darkling thrush on new year's eve as we look back at the year that was and look ahead to the year to come. the sentiment expressed by the poet resonates in different ways during the pandemic which can feel bleak, like the harsh winter landscape described in the poem. what really matters is at the end of the poem. enter the darkling thrush, chirping and the bear wintertime branches overhead, happy and unphased. i rather like that little thrush. from all of us here, happy new year. i love to hear from you.
