>> tim, happy new year to you. >> happy new year. as you can see normally folks would be packed here on the embarcadero waiting to see the city fireworks display but since they have been canceled again this year, people found other ways to ring in the new year. new year's celebrations in san francisco were unusually quiet. normally the embarcadero would be packed full with people but after the city canceled fireworks displays for the second year in a row, many had to find another way to bring in the new year. >> people have to be reminded there is a reason to sell pretty. it is easy to get caught up in all to have drama that is going on in the world now. >> they were busy early friday evening preparing to welcome their first guest for a sold out new year's menu. staff said the goal was to provide diners with a fun but

also safe evening. >> everyone has to be masked when they come in and checking i.d.'s when they come in. >> others wanted to bring in the new year in a more subdued year. >> we came to get some dinner and laid low tonight. reporter: while they are disappointed the omicron variant has put a damper on another new year's eve they are happy to spend the night close to family and friendses. >> actually i'm happy i'm not traveling. we live in such a great city. just enjoy san francisco. reporter: many say they are ready to wave goodbye to 2021 one way or another. >> thank you very much. googood riddance. hopefully we'll be better off in 2022. >> many people have been saying enthusiasm hoping for the end of the pandemic.

healthy -- >> new year! reporter: abc7 news. ama: they were all bundled up. what does forecast bring? dan: spencer christian for the new year's forecast. spencer? spencer: i made a resolution to try to stay warm during the first day of 2022. wind is very calm which means that allows temperatures to drop rather sharply and it is getting cold. we have temperatures in our inland areas to n the mid 30's now. they are going to get lower as we look at the overnight lows, we expect lows in up ther 20's. low 30's in most inland spots and mid to upper 30's around the bayshore line along the coast. it is going to be cold tonight. tomorrow, first day of the new year, sunny skies chilly temperatures, highs only in the

middle 40's and some in the low 50's around 51 in the bay and along the coast. after a dry new year's weekend, rain will be coming in and that rain will be with us through the first few days of next week. i'll give you a closer look of that and the accuweather in a few minutes. ama: happening now. a growing memorial on the hollywood walk of fame for betty white.atred to leave stars, candles and a copy of her book. she passed away just weeks before her 100th birthday. she was known for a career that spanned eight decades. beaus known for her role on mary tyler moore and the golden gir girls.

opened fire. people scrambled for cover. >> everybody started running out. ama: the victim was taking to the medical center where he is in stable but critical condition. police won't say if the suspect is in custody not in danger. >> now to colorado. a fast-moving wildfire decimated hundreds of homes north of denver. officials estimated 500 homes were destroyed yesterday. but the state's governor says as many as 1000 homes may have burned. fire officials say it is likely the fire was sparked by power lines down by winds. amazingly, no casualties reported. some residents were waiting to learn whether their homes were standing or gone. >> i think our house is ok. but other people we know, their house burned and you really feel bad for them.

dan: tonight firefighters continue to put out flames. ama: reducing the amount of time you need to quarantine from covid ipfection from 10 days to five days. the infection rate continues to inch up to 16%. for the first time since the pandemic began, the u.s. has surpassed 2 million cases of covid-19 in one week. dan: starting tomorrow crossing the bay area's state-owned bridges will cost $1 more. that means at the bay bridge toll plaza, that will increase to $7. back in 2018 voters approved three gradual toll increases. the final toll shiek scheduled for january 1, 2025. ama: the new year's day power ball jackpot is soaring up to
