lineup for covid tests today. a sobering sign that kids are headed back to school. good evening and thank you for joining us. you're watching abc 7 news at 6:00. right away, your health is one of the pillars we focus on in our effort to build a better bay area. a mad rush underway by parents to get children tested for covid before headed back to school tomorrow. cornell barnard was at one testing site earlier today, and it looks pretty busy. >> it really was, more than 1000 tests given there today. so many parents getting ready to send kids back to school after the holidays, and with omicron infections on the rise, getting tested before returning to school is highly recommended. >> the break was fun, but i can see my friends again. >> miles is ready to go back to school in san francisco, not until he gets a covid test. his mom knows it has to be done. >> i wasn't necessarily happy

about it, but it is part of what we have to do. it is our new normal. >> san francisco unified bracing for a potential surgeon cases and recommending all students and staff get tested before returning to class. free rapid testing is available at district headquarters and other school sites for the next week. >> this community has stepped forward to do what is necessary in regard to getting tested, and we are really proud how the community has stepped forward to take care of each other. >> the line was long for testing. home test kits were also available for families. >> i will feel safer because i know i don't have the virus. >> there have been an increase in people testing. >> san jose unified offered free testing at its operations warehouse. >> about 800 tests just at this location in anticipation of school starting on front -- starting. >> in marin county, test kits

were provided before the holidays. >> it will allow us to identify people who potentially don't even know they are positive for covid to stay home. >> some wonder why not postpone the start of school and pivoted to remote learning for several weeks to allow for the surge? this dr. believes that option can be avoided with safeguards and testing. >> i respected that different school district around the country are doing what they can, because we know in person learning is the best place for students not only academically but for mental health and social development, and sometimes for safety and nutrition. >> san francisco unified and other districts say if a student or staff member test positive, they can return to school after five days of isolation if they no longer show symptoms and provide negative covid test. >> cornell, thank you. now to the east bay, where parents at the west contra costa unified school district waited in long lines for free at comb -- at home test kits for their

students. take a look at the line of cars outside one of the distribution sites. 30,000 tests were handed out here and at kennedy high in richmond. classes resume tomorrow after the winter break. the district is strongly encouraging students to test today before returning to class tomorrow. with the highly infectious omicron variant, the superintendent is concerned about rising case counts. >> anecdotally, i would say yes, we are hearing an increase in covid cases. which is why our school, our county, and the surrounding school districts, are taking the same measure, covid safety measure, making sure we get test kits out. >> if case counts keep soaring, could there be a return to remote learning? the doctor did not rule that out. everything, he says, is on the table. today, the oakland unified school district held a covid-19 testing site for students and staff as class resumes monday

after the holidays. this happened at fremont high school in oakland, and in this video, you can see kids and parents standing in a long line outside the school to be tested. other parents held a virtual protest to stop in person instruction as covid cases surge. >> they are putting our children in a situation like that. it is taking a chance with their lives. why would you do that? >> parents hope calling on the school board will result in immediate action to return to distance learning. protesters believe reopening schools will result in an increase in covid infections. as children prepare to return to class tomorrow, america is seeing a major surge icas. the u.s. has reported more than 2.2 million new cases last week, setting an all-time pandemic record. there is also lingering confusion and criticism over last week's guidance from the

we have all kinds of things going on in weather. you mentioned painfully cold weather. we are looking at temperatures in the cool to chilly range, but not terribly cold. you mentioned the king tides, unusually high tides, likely to produce minimal, mild coastal flooding in low-lying areas, which is what happens when we have king tides. the coastal flood advisory remains in effect until 10:00 tomorrow morning. let's get back to the weather details. tonight flows in the upper 30's to low 40's inland. not nearly as cold as last night. lows generally around the bay and coast in the mid 40's. rain is on the way. clouds of thickening right now. this is a taste of our forecast animation starting at 11:00 tonight. rain will begin to arrive in the north bay and spread to other parts of the bay area during the middle of the day tomorrow. we have a very wet week. coming up, a closer look at that in the seven day forecast. >> glad for that warning, thank

you. developing news now, airline passengers are finding getting home after the holidays is not easy. today and tomorrow are expected to be the busiest post holiday travel days just as airlines struggle with bad weather and covid canceling or delaying thousands of lights. elwyn lopez has a look at how travelers are dealing with the chaos. >> from minneapolis to boston, millions standing in lines at airports on one of the busiest travel days good -- days. >> there is. it is a long time here. >> and increasing covid-19 cases impacting pilots and staff, forcing airlines to cancel or delay flights. >> just when we thought air travel could not get worse. >> in atlanta, airport officials advising passengers to arrive 2.5 hours before domestic flights. >> last year i was traveling and

about the "extremely high amount of covid vaccine deaths." the republican congresswoman from georgia has a history of tweeting those false claims. she responded today saying twitter is an enemy to america and cannot handle the truth. her congressional account remains active. the account suspension comes nearly a year after twitter banned former president trump from the platform. take a look, these king tides are the reason for a flood advisory through 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. these large swells occur at new and full moons when the earth, moon and sun are aligned. the national weather service says minor coastal flooding is expected at lowing -- low-lying locations along the san francisco bay shoreline. king tides typically flood low-lying streets in the north bay. today was no exception. water rushed across streets in mill valley. this one just off highway 101 at the shoreline exit. as you can see, the powerful

>> new details tonight from new mexico, where it took 18 hours to rescue 21 people stuck in a tram above the sandia mountains. this happened like -- late friday night, stranding two cars with restaurant employers. the trams had to be stopped because of icing and moisture. employees struggled to stay warm as they waited to get to the ground safely. >> in winter, you have to be more perceptive of the cables, and the wind conditions as well. this is the mountain and we have to get that reminder every now

and then. >> cruz began the rescue mission saturday morning, propelling passengers down the cabin in groups of two, lowering them about 85 feet to the ground. one employee was stuck alone in a tram higher up the mountain and had to wait longer than others. rescuers say no one was injured, but as you can imagine, they were frustrated. some scary moments at today's eagles game in maryland. oh boy. fans eager to see quarterback jalen hurts tumbled onto the walkway when a railing collapse. hurts was walking back to the locker room when the mishap happened. he actually jumped into action and helps each of the fans and get back on their feet. the good news in all of this, there were no serious injuries. in the east bay, some people woke up to a frosty morning. parts of the bay area got down into the 20's overnight.

are dry, but the first wave of rain tomorrow morning will come from the north bay. temperatures are down right now into the mid-40's already in santa rosa, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. let's give you a view of emeryville. clouds will continue to increase overnight. the first wave of rain arrives early tomorrow morning just after midnight, light rain developing in the north bay. during that you will spread south and east. we can expect periods of rain virtually every day this week through friday. overnight as clouds increased, temperatures drop into the mid to upper 30's in the chilly estate inland locations, but closer to the coast, lows and lee in the mid 40's tonight. tomorrow, under raining conditions, we will have high temperatures reaching only into a narrow range, about mid 50's just about everywhere in the bay area. this storm approaching rings one on the storm impact scale. tomorrow and tuesday, we expect
