-- passing this afternoon. his memory will live on in pictures like this one. he was set to graduate in february, was gunned down and killed in air state 580 in oakland. >> he was going to be great deputy. reporter: he served side-by-side in the california national guard with him. he still remembers conversations they had on watch during some of the civil unrest over the last two years in sacramento. he says nguyen was eager to learn about being in law enforcement. >> he was driven to not just become a deputy mb in law enforcement, driven to great in those positions and really make a difference. >> he had a passion for. sometimes those guys have that passion, they move up and they make a difference somewhere. we don't know if that was going to happen. >> he was his criminal justice

professor who wrote him a recommendation to get into the cap me. >> i could tell he would've been a great police officer. i'm still in shock, sad. reporter: sadly these are some of the last images of him as deputies loaded his bodies -- body into the corner struck. those he served with said they will remember his passion to be great. >> he joked about his family wanting him. to become a doctor. we laughed about that. being a soldier, serving the country and the state, to be able to serve the community as a deputy in law enforcement was something he really wanted. reporter: robert is a deputy santa barbara county. he said when the background investigator interviewed him about david, he told him if you don't hire him, we will. a fund has been set up for david's family with a link on

band together and put an end to the trauma that is plaguing our communities. reporter: that is oakland mayor today. last week, she governor newsom. >> we can advocate for. we can yell and scream at the top of her lungs. but the highways are controlled by the state. reporter: dr. lepage is assistant professor of criminal justice at cal state east bay. he's is what cameras can help solve crimes, the bigger problem is the untraceable ghost guns. >> their short-term solutions, we need long-term solutions. whether the short-term ones might be trying to get some of the guns off the street. it could really slow down some of the violent acts. ama: the governor'he gov responded to our story, count --
