areas of dense fog this morning. by 11:00 a.m., a.m., a.m., intact, mostly cloudy day and upper 50's to low 60's. tomorrow morning, we will bring back rain in the forecast. reggie: the country marking one year since the deadly attack on our nation's capitol. here is a live look as democratic lawmakers are hosting several events commemorating the day. president biden will speak to the nation in about an hour. the attorney general vowing justice will be served to any and all of those involved in the january 6 attack. i could dodgy live from washington. ike: good morning. it was a rare speech by the attorney general, making a point to say that the probe into the attack is far from over and they

will follow the facts to wherever they lead. this morning, a tale of two days. in the weeks after the attack, the capitol complex was outfitted with armored military vehicles, tall fences and barbed wire. this time, a more ordinary approach, temporary fencing that circled the capitol has not returned. the fbi does not have any information about a credible threat but capitol police will be ready if anything happens, claiming the department has improved. >> the events did expose critical failures and deficiencies with operational planning, staffing, training, and equipment. ike: democratic lawmakers will host several events commemorating that day, most republicans expected to be absent. president biden expected to speak. >> i expect president biden will lay out the significance of what

happened and the singular responsibility president trump has for the chaos and carnage. ike: a new episode's poll says 72% of those involved were threatening democracy. >> our democracy was on the brink of catastrophe. ike: as for justice, it continues. seven hundred five cases have been filed against those related to the attack and almost 80% were charged in part from evidence on social media. attorney general merrick garland said the justice department will continue to prosecute any and all cases related to the attack. >> whether they were present that day or otherwise criminally responsible for the assault on our democracy, we will follow the facts wherever they lead. ike: back to that abccc so's poll.

believe donald trump was involved. reggie: we will have special coverage of the anniversary of the attack, president biden expected to speak around 6:00 this morning and we will bring that to you live on abc 7 and wherever you stream. kumasi: we now know the identity of the alameda county sheriff recruit killed in a freeway shooting in oakland. his name is david new when -- david nguyen. he was supposed to graduate from the academy . he was driving home on interstate 580 toward the bay bridge when someone shot into his toyota prius. he was taken to highland hospital where he died. the bay area law enforcement community is in a state of shock. >> this was not definitely business as usual for the 172nd academy to come to work when their fellow academy mate is no longer here.

kumasi: highway patrol is investigating what led to the shooting. no arrests have been made. this was the fourth deadly shooting on a highway in oakland. all of those are unsolved. the highway patrol is urging anyone who witnessed this to come forward with information not only about this but other shootings. you can call the chp tip line. reggie: children as as as as now eligible for a covid booster shot after the cdc gave the final go-ahead last night. this comes as a surge of infections disrupts schools across the country. jobina: some people are really upset. chicago schools cancel classes again after the teachers refused to return, citing a lack of testing and the city having no plan. it is not just chicago. in boston, the superintendent stepped in to teach fourth grade

yesterday. the u.s. education secretary insists in person learning is safe. >> we have better tools including mitigation strategies we know work and worked before we had vaccines. jobina: stricter safety measures are coming to southern california. employers will soon be required to supply n95 masks to work indoors. this all comes as a testing site in l.a. confirms the case of so-called flurona, people infected with the flu and covid-19. kumasi: today, a group of san francisco teachers are planning a sick out, skipping classes because they feel the district has not done enough to protect them from covid. this comes after hundreds of teachers and parent educators called out sick yesterday. amy holyfield joining us live with the changes districts are making. amy: it is not clear how many

teachers will participate in this sick out. 500 people have signed an online petition in support but there are comments online from people saying, please, don't do this and some saying, i will be in my classroom today and this is not a union organized sick out. this was organized by teachers who are upset and say the school district did not do enough to protect them from this latest surge of covid. more than 600 teachers and parent educators called out esther day in san francisco so they did not have enough substitute teachers to cover the classrooms yesterday. that is when this planned sick out will supposedly happen today. one teacher in oakland who has tested positive for covid understands the teachers concerns. >> it is exhausting and scary and i feel like a lot of teachers think they will be the next one out, that it is

cascading and moving so quickly. there's a lot of fear. amy: san francisco school district says they have received school -- test kits from the state and has hired a company to distribute them to the schools. the district provided k n95 masks to the teachers but they also want the kids wearing high-quality masks. the teachers union plans to meet with san francisco school officials today to discuss more measures they can put into place to keep teachers and students save. amy holyfield, abc 7 news. reggie: fremont unified adding me s pltopick up at home covidn reonse to what youyesterday, lis stretched around the district office, which was the only pickup spot. frustrated parents waited for hours for test kits. >> 40 minutes in my car and i parked down the street and i'm going to wait another 40 minutes. >> they should have just

kumasi: san jose police say a cyclist was killed in a hit and run crash in the area of queensland and old -- highway shortly after 6:00 last night. the cyclist was taken to the hospital and passed away. we reached out for more information, including the vehicle they say left the scene. reggie: authorities in philadelphia are looking into the possibility a christmas tree sparked a massive fire that killed 12 people, eight of them children. just after 6:00 yesterday morning in a three-story building owned by the philadelphia housing authority, longtime firefighters say this was the worst experience of their career. at least 26 people were living inside two apartments. 18 of them in one unit. a family member expressed regret not being able to help his cousins. >> one of them, he looked up to

president biden expected to speak around 6:00 this morning. we will bring it to you live on abc 7 and wherever you stream. kumasi: we are learning more about the young sheriff's recruit shot and killed on interstate 580 driving home from work. david nguyen was dedicating his life to service. we have more on the young man's impact. >> 28-year-old david nguyen's memory will live on in pictures like this one. the recruit was set to graduate in february, gunned down and killed tuesday night on interstate 580 in oakland. >> he was definitely going to be a great deputy. >> they served side-by-side in the california national guard and he still remembers the conversations they had on watch during some of the civil unrest over the last two years in sacramento. he says nguyen was eager to learn about being in law enforcement. >> he was so driven to not just

become a deputy and be in law enforcement, but he was driven to be great in those positions and really make a difference. >> he had a passion for it. sometimes guys who have that passion don't just stay at the bottom level. they move up. >> market has been e retired police -- he is a retired police officer who wrote him a recommendation to get into the academy. >> he would have been a great police officer. still, i'm shocked and said. >> sadly, these are some of the last images of nguyen as deputies loaded his body into the corners truck. those he served with said they will remember his passion to be great. >> he joked about his family, hey, why aren't you becoming a doctor? we laughed about that. but being a soldier, serving the country and the state and then

sectors in our economy. reggie: several bay area organizations and businesses are making their own call to close. between that and more masking, you aren't alone if you are feeling a sense of déjà vu. here is amanda duffy still you. amanda: the new year being called 2022, a grim sense of déjà vu was soaring levels of transmission, longer testing lines, and stronger mass mandates. >> right when you think you might be out of the woods, you get hit with omicron. amanda: this professor is back on zoom after teaching in person . elsewhere across the bay area, word of impact from services to sports. but coleman police department tweeted all town facilities will be closed to the public until january police. stanford and uc berkeley announced their basketball programs are postponing games,

including the pac-12 home opener against oregon state. there is a sense of optimism from the top doctor who says the state is prepared to handle the record surge in cases. >> today, in the environment with covid and omicron is betty -- better in many ways and puts us in a place where we can manage the disease burden that we are seeing in a way we weren't able to. amanda: another dose of déjà vu across college campuses. brian wu stayed home after the campus moved the first two weeks online. >> i came back from break with the intention to spend every day in new york city meeting with friends and catching up but i spent most of the break at home because of how bad the surge has been getting. amanda: covid-19 continuing to cancel plans. the organizers of first fridays have canceled their term. >> we decided that would be the safest thing.

amanda: safely -- safety still paramount. >> we are doing better today than we did back in march 2020 and this hopefully will pass. amanda: abc 7 news. reggie: we all understand omicron spreads fast. it's been hard to figure out is why. we've been getting interesting answers from a bay area expert. amy hollyfield is here with that, plus a new symptom to listen for. amy: catchy. i will get to that in the second. first, a doctor explaining to us why this variant is so contagious. he told us a lot of it has to do with where the virus lives in your body. it is in the big airways of the lungs that are closer to your mouth and nose. that's where it can escape and spread. so you have a lot of it in the large airway and you can easily spread it, all of that out of your mouth and nose, and it lingers longer in the air.

so that means you need to be extra selective about where you spend your time right now if you are trying to avoid this thing. >> anywhere, not just indoors, but spending a long time in like more than an hour, more than 30 minutes, an hour, and you really have to up your covid precaution game. amy: now to that symptom, they are also noticing that people are complaining of ear pain with this variant. if you have the virus and you are noticing hearing loss, dizziness, or ringing in your ears, doctors say don't dismiss it. at a formal hearing test to check for hearing loss. years are likely infected from the virus entering the nose and that highlights the importance of wearing a good mask. reporting live, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. reggie: if you want to stay up-to-date on the latest covid headlines or if you have
