ama: all other uc campuses with undergrads have announced plans to start the spring semester virtually. dan: abc 7 news reported was in berkeley tonight and has the story. reporter: uc berkeley students are scheduled to return to class in just under two weeks. as the omicron variant spreads, some students think it is not smart to be in person. >> how concerned would you be walking into a classroom? >> i would say pretty concerned. reporter: james is the student vice president for campus affairs. he thinks the university should follow the other uc schools and start the semester remote. >> obviously there something they saw in their research and medical centers that made them think going back in person right away is not the right thing. i don't feel confident we are the only one out of the nine that is not making that decision. reporter: uc berkeley says they continue to monitor the situation. the campus has masking and vaccination policies in place,

they are not ruling out the policy of changing their learning plans. others at the university are also concerned about safety. >> i'm pretty happy i'm not teaching right now. i think i would be more nervous. reporter: sophia is a phd student and part-time undergrad teacher. she says teaching is easier in person, but safety has to come first. >> students are performing better in person versus online discussion. you still obviously have to take it into account safety. reporter: the berkeley health department reporting its highest daily cave in -- covid case count. they say they will make testing available to all residents and students but also said the adversity should start about -- think about starting the semester remote. wax we want our students to return in person safely. reporter: he thinks temporarily starting away from the classroom will limit the spread of the virus and make it easier to return to in person learning.

>> just saying outfront we are born to do a period so we can get foreign teens and tested and go from there. -- quarantined and tested and go from there. dan: uc santa cruz announced it is the length the return of in person learning for two weeks because of a wave of covid infections. school officials after running 3000 tests, the campus positivity rate is at 5%. the highest since the school started testing. in person learning will resume on january 31, the same day the booster deadline goes into effect. students who live on campus should not return this weekend. ama: san francisco state university students will not be returning to campus when the new semester starts. university president lynn mahoney announced today that start of in person instruction will be delayed until fairbury 14 because of the increasing covid cases. classes will be held remotely. most campus services will be

provided remotely until perry seven. dan: oakland unified school district is wearing students and parents teachers may be planning a sick out. in an email, they said we have worked to determine which schools may be affected by this unsanctioned activity. the principle of each school will communicate daily with families at their school is likely to be negatively impacted. so far we know oakland stack has asked parents to keep students home. today, nearly 900 san francisco educators called out sick, they say the district has failed to protect them from the omicron variant. the district and teachers union is negotiating a health and safety agreement. are getting ends tonight without progress and has been delayed until next week. ama: california health officials gave the ok for 12 to 15-year-olds in the state to get a booster dose of the pfizer vaccine. recommendation is for some immuno compromised five to 11-year-olds. teens 16 and older could already get a booster shot.

this comes as at least one bay area hospital is seeing a record number of pediatric covid cases. abc is seven news reporter j.r. stone has a story. >> i want to get the booster. reporter: last week, he wasn't able to get it because she wasn't 16. fast forward to this week. the fda and cdc have given the ok for boosters among her age group, and there is another problem. >> we were told to wait. a few days after that, she tested positive for covid. we left the house to isolate in a hotel around -- away from the rest of the family. reporter: they are zooming with us from their hotel room, away from older immunocompromised family members they live with is audra, her husband and be all have covid. she will have to wait for her booster. doctors at stanford say families of other 12 to 15-year-olds or immuno compromised five to

11-year-olds can start booking booster appointments. dr. mould and otto says while booster shots is another tool in the tool ship box, there's another more pressing concern. >> the majority of kids were eligible still haven't received the first vaccinations. reporter: the doctor says while pediatric covid cases aren't always as serious as adults, it is nothing to mess around with. >> a camp at kids in the hospital. they have certainly died. our hospital has record numbers of kids on oxygen with covid. reporter: a reason why she says she may have covid now, that she is planning the booster. certainly not foolproof, but as much as she can do. >> i will get it as soon as i can. i'm very excited. do know how long i have to wait? >> her pediatrician says if she is symptom-free, next week she can get it. ama: vaccines are still our best
