low visibility. here is the san mateo bridge. we have some drizzle out there early this morning. a live look showing you some drops on the lens. we see those light showers move south through the 9:00 a.m. hour. they continued through known and this is a quick moving storm. by 4:00 p.m., we are already drying out, ending the day with sunshine. behind the storm system, temperatures will drop. we are coming back to those cold temperatures overnight. we are falling into the 30's and 40's. i will show you this line of rain moving south coming up in a few minutes. kumasi: thank you. this morning, students and parents in oakland getting ready to go to school but officials are warning their might not be enough teachers there to teach them. a group of teachers is planning a sick out. this is coming one day after nearly 900 educators called out sick, saying the district has not done enough to protect them from covid-19. amy hollyfield is joining us live with more on this. amy: good morning.

oakland teachers put out a statement announcing the sick out saying that teachers sit in their classrooms and worry that they will be the next to get the disease and take it home to their loved ones and they are terrified. the district put out an email to parents saying we have worked to determine which schools may be affected by this unsanctioned activity. the principle of each school will communicate directly with families if their school is likely to be negatively impacted. oakland tech has asked parents to keep students home today. one teacher told us about the struggle between wanting to make a statement, but not wanting to let down parents. >> very few elementary schools have chosen to participate because we know how hard that is on parents. but my own children are middle schoolers and high schoolers. i will be keeping them home. they will be staying home alone because i will be at work. in solidarity with the teachers

at their schools who will be walking out. amy: she is a kindergarten teacher. san francisco teachers planned a sick out yesterday and the district saw an increase in sick out clause -- sick out calls. teachers in both districts say they do not feel like the district has done enough to protect them. in oakland, the list of demands includes wanting two weeks of remote learning to slow the spread of omicron. oakland district officials say if you have not heard from your principal, you should assume that your school is not going to be impacted today and that it will be open and you should go ahead and take your child to school. reporting lies, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. reggie: uc berkeley students are asking camp is to take action and postpone the return to in person classes. students were supposed to come back in less than two weeks as omicron cases rise. all other campuses with

undergrads have announced plans to start the spring semester virtually. here is abc 7 news reporter ryan curry. ryan: uc berkeley students are scheduled to return to class in two weeks but as they omicron variant spreads, some students think it is not smart to be there in person. >> how concerned are you to be walking into a classroom? >> pretty concerned. ryan: james whiteford is the student vice president for campus affairs. he thinks the university should follow other schools and start the semester remote. >> there is something they saw in their research and medical centers that made them think going back in person right away is not the right thing. i do not feel very confident that we are the only one out of the nine that is not making that decision. ryan: uc berkeley continues to monitor the situation about the omicron variant. the campus has masking and vaccination policies in place and they are not ruling out the possibility of changing their learning plans.

others are also concerned about safety. >> i am pretty happy that i am not teaching right now. i would be a little more nervous. ryan: sophia is a phd student and part-time undergrad teacher. she says teaching is easier in person, but safety has to come first. >> students will be performing better if they were in person versus online but you have to take into account everyone's safety. ryan: the berkeley health department reported its highest case count. they say they will try to make testing available to all residents and students but said the university should not think about starting remote. >> we all want students to be able to safely attend class in person but returning to instruction has to be part of the conversation. ryan: he thinks starting the year away from the classroom will limit the spread of the virus and make it easier to return to in person learning. >> just saying front that we will do a period so that we can get quarantined and tested and

go from there. ryan: ryan curry, abc 7 news. kumasi: you see santa cruz is delaying the return of in person learning by two weeks because of covid-19 infections. officials say after 3000 tests, positivity rate stands at 5%, the highest it has been since the school started testing. in person learning will resume on january 31, the same day that the booster deadline goes into effect. students on campus should not return this weekend. cal state east bay and san francisco state university will both be starting the spring semester virtually. cal state east bay last to be remote through the end of january. san francisco state will have virtual classes are for bray 14th. both schools say buildings for student services like the library and student sister -- student center will remain open. reggie: the president's vaccine mandates go before the supreme court. the justices will hear arguments about two mandates. one is the vaccine or test requirement for large employers. the other mandate has large

mandates for healthcare workers as a requirement. challengers say the mandates are unconstitutional. the supreme court will decide if the mandate should take effect while the legal challenges play out. kumasi: a bitter blast of winter weather is arriving along the east coast. we want to show you a live look of new haven, connecticut. there is so much snow there. they are expected to get three to six inches from this latest storm. this is coming as so many cities are already dealing with covid-related worker shortages. >> federal workers in off -- federal offices in washington, d.c. are closed. some towns are paying drivers up to $300 an hour to plow the roads. the sanitation department in new york city will try to keep the roads clear this morning even with more than 20% of its staff out sick. >> we have a very robust number of staff to be able to man a large number of plows on

extended tours. we will ship your operations -- we will shift our operations to 212 hour days. >> it comes just days after hundreds of motorists were stranded. that area is expecting significantly less snow from the storm. virginia's governor is advising people to stay off the roads. drew: when i see images like that, i say do i miss the snow? condos. do i miss -- kind of. do i miss standing in the snow? here is that line of showers associated with a cold front that is beginning to move into our neck of the woods. it is a quick moving system. you can see the clearing edge behind the storm that will bring some sunshine. here is live doppler 7. we are finding the showers from cloverdale to ukiah and this line will sink south. this is it. it is not a lot of rain we are talking about. it is moving through during the friday morning commute.

according to advocates, frontline efforts have required for more meals. >> we already have our own count because we have to change our numbers. amanda: the last count happened in 2019. numbers showed a spike in homelessness of 31% and an increase from 2017. 2021 would have provided updated figures but the pandemic forced the county to cancel and this week, count dates for mid-january removed to next month. >> seeing it postponed is concerned because it makes you go, we are not canceling again, are we? amanda: the count is critical. a requirement for receiving federal homeless assistance funds and more much-needed help to address what is the greatest failure back in december, homelessness. >> i take responsibility for that failure. >> i totally agree with the mayor. homelessness is one of his greatest failures. amanda: one resident says he has

volunteered and understands the census provides a baseline. >> there is not one we can account for everyone. we know that countless folks sleep in cars, live in doubled up situations. amanda: this volunteer fears the population is being pushed in different directions because of sweeps. >> whatever situation they have made for themselves to keep themselves safe in the absence of actual housing resources, displacing those, that does not work. amanda: i reached out to the county and the company leading the count for the reason behind the rescheduling. the county says it is working to confirm. in san jose, amanda del castillo yo, abc 7 news. reggie: the three men convicted of killing ahmaud arbery have been sentenced. they face a midmonth sentence of life in prison.

they are corrected of shooting ahmaud arbery while he was charging -- jogging in an atlanta neighborhood. if eligible for parole, they would still have to spend a minimum of 30 years in jail. the three men still face federal charges and that trial is expected to start next month. kumasi: members of congress are affected on the january 6 insurrection. congressman eric swalwell told abc 7 the countries even more divided than we were a year ago. >> we cannot erase what happened. we have to look at it as an opportunity to strengthen our democracy and it is time for enough of us to come together for what is needed. kumasi: local leaders also saying it is time for their republican colleagues to speak out against the violence. >> anyone who is watching this should know that there were hundreds and thousands who came up with the goal of inflicting violence. i do not understand how every american congressperson and

peer-reviewed. reggie: here at home, another teacher sick out is scheduled. yesterday it was san francisco. today open public school teachers will stay home to protest a district code policy. amy hollyfield is live live with the impact. amy: if you have not heard your principal yet, administrators say you should assume your school will be open and that it will not be impacted and you should take your child to school. administrators did put out a statement saying, "we have worked to determine which schools will be affected by this unsanctioned activity." the principle of each school will communicate directly with families if their school is likely to be negatively impacted. teachers are asking for safety measures like two weeks of remote learning to slow the spread, weekly covid testing, and n95 masks for teachers and students. we talked to a parent who says he supports the protesting teachers.

>> we need to have n95's and it seems like the response from the district is omicron is not as bad, which is not acceptable. amy: san francisco teachers planned a sick out yesterday and the district did see an increase in sick out calls. they had 616 teachers called out sick yesterday compared to the previous day. teachers feel like they do not feel that the districts have done enough to protect them. open teachers say they will caravan to the district headquarters -- oakland teachers say they will caravan to the district headquarters to make their demands. reggie: amy, thank you. check your flight before you head to the airport. we are seeing the perfect storm of winter weather and covid issues once again at airports across the u.s. here is a live look at sfo where at least 31 flights are canceled. across the country, more than 2200 flights are canceled. tomorrow, flight aware reports more than 500 cancellations and

that number is going up. alaska airlines is reducing its flight schedule due to an unprecedented number of sick employees. the airline will cut back 10% of its schedule for the rest of the month because of sick calls related to covid-19. kumasi: next week san jose city council approved an update to its vaccine mandate. if approved, it would require people who visit health facilities like the san jose commission center to provide proof that they have gotten a booster vaccine. the proposal would also require city employees to get a booster if eligible or approved that they received one. reggie: health officials have given the ok for 12 to 15 euros to get a pfizer booster. the recommendation is for immuno compromised five to 11-year-olds. teens 16 and up can get the booster shot. this comes as at least one bay area hospitals seeing a record number of pediatric covid cases.

the alameda county sheriff's office says he was killed for no apparent reason. barbara says her brother was her best friend. >> i just smiled thinking about him because he is so funny. everyone loves my brother. you just talk to him and you cannot hate him. he is a cool dude. reggie: barbara says she has no hate for the perpetrator. she just wants justice so she is asking them to come forward so she can get some peace. kumasi: contra costa sheriff's deputy shot and killed a bowl after it attacked and killed a rancher. this happened in discovery bay yesterday. deputies responded to the scene and they found a highly aggressive bull. they fired shots to scare the animal when it approached first responders, but then they had to put it down to protect themselves. the rancher was pronounced dead at the scene. officials have not released any information on the potential cause of death.

an engineer for san francisco's millennium tower fix has proposed a new solution to stop the structure from sinking. the engineer answered some tough questions yesterday. melanie woodrow has the story. melanie: when it comes to san franciso's leaning millennium tower, the number one concern is the building safe. the structure engineer of record answered that question. >> it demonstrated to our san francisco and hopefully to the city's building will remain safe and that it will begin recovering. the oversight committee -- melanie: the oversight committee held a meeting to discuss 18 piles. >> how few piles can we install and accomplish the project? >> i am not sure i know how to respond that you all did not ask
