>> building a better bay area, bring forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. reggie: it could be a tough day for kids and parents and one local school district. the warnings about plans for a sick out. kumasi: college of students who want a local university to reconsider its plan. reggie: a bitter winter blast hitting the east coast once again this morning. how covid is colliding with the work to clear the snow. kumasi: we are expecting scattered showers this morning.

the arrival of the wet weather where you live. reggie: good morning, it is friday, january 7 and you are watching abc 7 mornings. drew: good morning everybody. we are tracking the light rain beginning to move through the north. you notice the thin round of rain will be moving south throughout the morning. as we head towards the storm impact, it will be a level 1 storm we are track. low impact. it will create slick roadways on our morning commute. we're talking less than a quarter of an inch of rainfall. we keep light showers in the forecast. the afternoon, we will probably end with sunshine. behind this front, it does turn colder. we will show you the rain coming up little bit closer. kumasi: students and parents in oakland getting ready to go to school but district officials are warning or might not be enough teachers to teach them.

a group of teachers is planning a sick out one day after nearly 900 san francisco educators called out sick. many of them saying the district has not done enough to protect them from covid-19. >> oakland teachers put out a statement announcing there's out saying that teachers sit in classrooms terrified they will be the next to get the disease and take it home to their loved ones. that is why they are doing this. have work to determine which schools might be affected by this unsanctioned activity. the principal at each school will communicate directly with families if their school is likely to be negatively impacted. oakland tech we know has asked parents to keep students home today.

have chosen to participate because we know how hard that is on parents. my own children are middle schoolers and high schoolers. i will be picked -- keeping them home. in solidarity with the teachers at their schools that will be walking out. >> san francisco teachers had planned a sick out for yesterday. the district says it did see an increase in sick outs in the fall. hundred teachers called out sick yesterday compared to 414 on wednesday. teachers in both districts say they do not feel like the districts have done enough to protect them. in oakland, the list of demands and whose two weeks of remote learning to slow the spread of omicron. district officials say if you have not heard from your principal yet, you should go ahead take your kids to school and assume your school is going to be open and is not going to be impacted.

remain remote through at least the end of january. both schools say buildings for student services like the library and student center to remain open. reggie: president biden's vaccine mandates go before the supreme court today. they will hear about 2, 1 is the vaccine requirement for large and wears and the others for vaccine most health care workers. challenges -- challengers say the mandates are unconstitutional. the supreme court will have to decide whether the mandates take effect while the legal challenges plan out. kumasi: a big blast of winter weather is hitting the east coast. what's take you to seaside heights, new jersey. that snow is out there on the ground in the boardwalk. it looks like a lot of cities are already dealing with covid related worker shortages. >> the federal offices are closed today due to the weather and many cities are dealing with

drew: we have some light showers beginning to move through the north bay right now. we will see a limit of snow in the sierra. a winter weather advisory in effect right now. snow levels are pretty high above 6000 feet. two to six inches of snow at passed level. while we will have possible travel delays and chain controls, it is a quick moving system and it is out of here by tomorrow. today, we have the rain/snow mix. after that, look at saturday and

reggie: this morning, the three men convicted of killing ahmaud arbery are scheduled to be sentenced. they face of life in prison. they were convicted for chasing down and shooting arbery while he was out jogging in a residential neighborhood. the judge will decide whether the three men will be eligible for parole. under state law, if they are eligible, they would still have to spend a minimum of 30 years in prison. the three men still face federal charges. that trial is expected to begin next month. kumasi: advocates for the on house across santa clara county fair delay of a critical homeless count will impact a clear understanding of the crisis. the point in time homeless count

getting stolen in san francisco. the five real german shepherd was missing for three days if these grab summer in the hayes valley neighborhood. the investigation is still ongoing and police have not arrested anyone. police are thinking the public for helping to bring summer home. if you have any information, you are asked to contact san francisco park station police. can fish drive? israeli scientists found that fish can learn complex tasks and technically, drive a robot. they attached a camera to a water tank with a computer capable of translating the fish's movements. then, they challenge the fish to navigate to a target on the opposite wall. eventually, the fish hit its mark over and over again. even when scientists try to trick it with false targets.

do not feel like district have done enough to protect them. happening now, if you are flying anywhere, definitely check because we are seeing the perfect storm of winter weather and covid issues at airports across the u.s.. here is a live look at sfo where at least 31 flights are already canceled. across the country, more than 2200 flights are already can will. flight aware reports more than 500 cancellations. that number continues to go up. alaska airlines is reducing its flight schedule due to an unprecedented number of employees. the airline says it will cut back 10% of it schedule for the rest of the month because of these sick calls related to covid-19. kumasi: next week, san jose city council is set to approve an update to require people to

provide proof they received a booster vaccination. the proposal would also require city employees to get a booster if eligible or prove they received one. reggie: california health officials have given the ok for 12 to 15-year-olds to get a pfizer booster. the recommendation is also for some immunocompromised five to 11-year-olds. teens 16 and older can already get there booster shot. this comes as at least one bay area hospital is seeing a record number of pediatric covid cases. >> i really wanted to get the booster. >> last week, this 15.5-year-old was not able to get it because she was not 16. fast forward to this ok for boosters among her age group and there is another problem. >> we were told to wait. a few days after that, she tested positive for covid.

we left the house to isolate in a hotel away from the rest of the family. >> b and her mom are zooming as from their hotel room away from older immunocompromised family members they live with as auger, her husband and b all have covid. b will have to wait for her booster, but doctors at stanford say families of other 12 to 15-year-old or immunocompromised five to 11-year-olds can start booking booster appointments. one doctor says while a booster shot for this age group is another tool in the toolbox, there is another more pressing concern. >> the majority of kids who are eligible still have not received their first vaccination either. >> she says while pediatric covid cases are not always as serious as adults, it is nothing to mess around with. >> it certainly can put kids in the hospital.

jobina: in the east bay, contra costa officers shot a bull. deputies responded to the scene and found a highly aggressive bull. they fired shots to try to scare the bull than they had to put it down to protect themselves. firefighters found the rancher he was pronounced dead at the scene. officials have not released any information on his potential cause of death. reggie: a $10,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to information in the death of an officer killed on east bay freeway earlier this week. his sister tells us she still cannot believe he is gone. >> i saw his body in the bag had put the flag on him.

adding just 199,000 jobs in december. economists have forecasted 450,000 new jobs. president biden will deliver remarks on the december jobs report in about one hour. a liquidation sale is underway at two bay area bath and beyond stores. they are set to close at the end of february along with 35 other stores across the country. back in july, the company announced plans to close 200 stores over two years because of declining sales. westfield valley fair mall is going to start charging for parking. starting february 8, it could cost you depending on how long you are staying. the new controlled parking program will allow you to park for free for the first two hours. after that, the cost increases by dollar increments every few hours. they are doing this because apparently, people have been using this garage as a free alternative to paying for parking at san jose airport.
