abc ■7 was at the community center where people were waiting over two hours today in the rain to get a covid test. man has skyrocketed and the command -- and the company doing the testing says they are struggling to get the supplies. sonoma county says cases have tripled. dan: in oakland, a car caravan in support of teachers. teachers are demanding more safety protocols at schools amid the omicron variant surge. our senior education reporter is in the newsroom. oakland unified has already met some of those demands. reporter: that is right. late last night, the bargaining team agreed to extend the covid leave so teachers would not have to use up their sick days. and the kn94 masks have been ordered for students but still ,503 teachers in oakland called

out sick, twice the number the district has been seeing every day this week. >> we had almost a quarter of our student body absent on monday. reporter: this teacher is dealing with the reality of covid in schools. she and others participated in a sick out over the lack of proper safety measures in schools. >> it feels like a wildfire and we are trying to get ahead of it. we need to be able to communicate. we are on the front lines. we are with students every day. >> is that where we are at? [car horns beeping] reporter: a caravan of cars traveled to school district headquarters. 12 schools were forced to close today the district said interrupting instruction for more than 5000 students.

i now, many teachers already knew the district had agreed to extend the covid leave and to purchase better masks. >> we have been delivering these masks to all of our schools yesterday and today and they will be available to all of the staff and we have ordered more for the students. reporter: still, teachers say there are other demands to be negotiated. >> that we have a clear emergency protocol if we have more teachers out then we can manage and when we have clear communication when a student or staff member get covid. reporter: olivia says it is up to her to make sure families sign their kids up for testing. >> we have to do the legwork of getting our families signed up for that. i had to put in a lot of effort to get my class signed up for it. reporter: the district says it has no plans to make testing

mandatory. i want to add that los angeles unified has mandated testing for students. the school district called today's sick out unapproved, unauthorized and technically illegal. when asked what repercussions there might be, the district said they would deal with that later. dan: bigger fish to fry at the moment. anyone coming to work in person is feeling the pressure of potentially getting sick. that creates greater anxiety. how are those deep in the trenches dealing with that stress? reporter: thanks for asking. besides the teachers having to take on new operant -- new responsibilities, let's talk about those that work in the school office. i spoke candidly with one person who now has to figure out where to put the substitutes when the teacher calls in sick, has to deal with sending kids home,

calling families when a kid appears sick, handing out test kits and making sure people are following safety protocols and dealing with everyone else's fears and anxiety. they are being spread thin. let me say to them tonight, we feel for you guys and we thank you for what you do. that is what i have to say. dan: thank you for saying it. kristen: stanford university is further delaying students' return to campus. undergrad classes will be phased in. those classes will be remote until january 20 fourth. an additional week. some classes like labs will still be in person. dan: santa clara university has pushed back its in-person learning. classes could remain virtual until february. kristen: in san jose, the oak grove school district will begin an outdoor masking policy.

as dustin dorsey explains, parents are split on the decision. reporter: the school playgrounds in the oak grove school district were mostly empty today due to wet weather and when students return to recess next week -- >> the school board of trustees did approve an outdoor masking policy which will include outdoor masking on all district property including drop-off and pickup and on all school grounds. reporter: students and staff will now be required to mask up outside unless actively eating or drinking or participating in physical activity. >> we have seen how the numbers have increased across our county. we are confident this is another layer of protection for our staff and students in addition to our community members. reporter: similar mask policies are already in place for other

bay area school districts but appearance here remain mixed on the decision. >54% of the campus community voted against the change but the policy passed. >> i feel like we missed the mark i not doing it in the beginning of the year and to keep reeling things in for kids when cases have not been shown to spread at school is really difficult for me as a parent to understand. >> i'm going to trust the school district leaders to decide the safest measure for our kids. so far, i have been happy with the safety measures taken. i feel comfortable following their lead with this enforced mask policy for outdoors. reporter: the policy will remain for the rest of the year. in san jose, dustin dorsey, abc 7 news. dan: there could be a lot of delays. starting today. there has been a spike in cases

among employees impacting service. riders are urged to check for the latest updates. kristen: there are signs omicron is about to set off new waves of workers quitting their jobs. dan: abc 7 news reporter david louis looks at the jobs forecast and how it could lead to more inflation. reporter: if restaurants and retailers think their staffing shortage is bad now, workforce analysts say covid is about to trigger two more waves of the great resignation. >> it is an occasion for a lot of thought and introspection and new approaches to people as they think about their jobs and also their cohort values. -- their core values. reporter: a new wave of resignations is expected now that the holidays are over and some have received year-end bonuses. a second wave will follow when companies implement their back to the office policies postponed i the omicron surge.

murder. officer underwood was standing guard. according to a criminal complaint, he filed -- multiple rounds were fired at underwood killing him. >> i miss being able to pick up my phone and talk to him. reporter: he was also accused of killing another deputy before being arrested. they met online through a facebook group centered on the boogaloo movement which federal prosecutors have say extremists used for a violent uprising. this is what he said when being arrested. as they await trial on federal criminal charges, the sister of underwood is now suing facebook alleging the social media platform connects users to extremist groups. >> had it not been for a facebook, they might never have met. reporter: underwood's attorney anticipates facebook will

you are still going to see a small percentage of people wind up in the hospital. the big thing that is happening is the exposure to people who are needed to run our city and take care of people in hospitals and as emergency medical services. that is concerning. dan: as you know, several of the president's former advisers leave there needs to be a new strategy. what does that look like? >> i 100% agree. i applaud that. the new strategy would look like -- what will we do in terms of living with covid-19 and no longer basing our decisions based on case numbers but hospitalizations? this is a process of moving towards something that is endemic. the first thing they will be able to do is keep schools open and there should be daily

briefings and transparency with our public health officials and the cdc. this is a good step in the right direction in terms of communication. dan: as you know, dr. patel, a few months ago we thought we were coming out of the woods and then omicron showed up. is this something that we will have to live with like a weird cold? will we have to find different ways to adapt and live with it like we do cold and flu? >> i think it is the latter. i think hopefully what happens that omicron or any other variant will fade into the background as we get more vaccines and natural immunity. we have to see the surges not take down our health structure. every single year, the flu and the common cold fill hospital capacity, it does not wreck our lives. we are in a much better arena

now with respect to prevention and treatment. if there is a future variant, hopefully it does not have nearly the same grip as omicron has. dan: is the covid vaccine going to be something we have to do every year? what about a fourth booster? >> it is entirely possible. we don't want to say yes right now. a lot of us roll our eyes when the pharmaceutical ceos come out and say, you may need a fourth shot when the scientific experts say, we will know more at the end of the month. why not wait until the end of the month to make that statement? the reality is, only 30% of americans who are eligible for the booster have gotten it and about 30%-40% of americans are still not fully vaccinated with the primary series. that is who we should be focusing on.

kristen: time now for the four at 4:00. new york could be the first state to hold fashion brands accountable to climate change. lawmakers introduced a bill today for any apparel brand selling in new york with a revenue of at least 100 million dollars. they would be required to map 50% of their supply chain and provide reporting on emissions, water, water, and more.
