inland valleys but sead iteeetty good. as we look at live doppler 7, you can see the storm track to the north. numbers are cold again, much colder in the south bay. we are seeing numbers drop quickly in the north bay while we are in the 40's and the city. there are pockets of fog from santa rosa to concord. two miles in concord. we will start out with partly cloudy skies then watch the temperatures climb. mid to upper 50's today, that sun at 5:08. we will let you know if we can squeeze any moisture out of that cloud deck for your monday

morning commute. liz: scenes like these are becoming too common in the bay area. hundreds of california national guard troops are deployed to provide help at testing centers. >> worst-case scenario, if you are still having trouble, i know they can -- >> qua me goodman didn't expect to see national guard troops. >> they are helpful. when i got here i did not know what i had to do. >> on that phone you can scroll down to " get started." >> national guard members were sent to sides across the bay area to help expedite the testing process during a surge

of new cases. the guard is helping with translation and preregistration. >> we are walking through the line, making sure everyone is signed up or signing up. >> i have been online since yesterday, looking for places. everybody was booked out to the end of the month. >> we are excited to have the national guard show up and provide support. >> the need for testing has never been greater. >> i am excited we are working collaboratively to solve this pandemic. before christmas, this site was averaging 700 tests a day. >> this line right now, they probably will wait an hour to be seen,, but with the national

guard here, it is helping to speeded up, so maybe half an hour. >> the national guard's deployment could last through mid february. liz: members of the governor's administration detailed california's covid spending plan yesterday. the bulk of the money would go to testing. another priority is funding vaccine clinics. it supports funds to support hospital workers by continuing to pay for contract staff. the administration wants to fund a supplemental paid sick leave policy for the state. governor newsom signed an executive order to protect residents of price gouging - -from --from price gouging of

at home tests. schools will remain open for both at home and in person classes this week. officials said they could not offer the districtwide quarantine. only county health officials can declare quarantine. for families without wi-fi or child supervision, children can come to campus. there is concern that more schools could return to remote learning as cases rise. we spoke to the vice chair of education about what could be ahead. >> in oakland at 12 schools were forced to close due to staffing shortages. contra costa county is planning to close 54 schools for crews to

the education committee what can the state do? >> the governor has the ability to make that happen right now from the top down. >> another factor is schools getting less funding as attendance declines. >> we will have to have some thoughtful discussions about how we fund our schools in the future. it will have to be a hybrid. >> assembly member dali wants to make sure students stay in the classroom. >> i am concerned that we are a decade behind, not just in learning loss. i am hearing from teachers that we are having to teach six-year-olds again just how to be kind to each other. >> california is also facing a

substitute teacher shortage. the state is offering substitute teachers $100 to $150 an hour in some districts. liz: the omicron variant is putting strain on first responders and hospital staff. city leaders are urging san francisco residents to only go to the hospital if cases are severe. >> the fire department is feeling the impact of the omicron variant. they have seen a large increase in 911 calls. >> we have -- >> the fire department says they have been saving calls from people experiencing minor covid-19 symptoms. >> what we are seeing are many

of our members off with covid so there is a supply and a demand issue. >> it is not just the fire department. many people are coming hospital with minor covid symptoms or just wanting a covid test. >-- dr. susan l rich says that more people are coming to the hospital than in previous surges. >> many of our staff are either sick with covid themselves, or because they are quarantining because they have had a high-risk encounter. >> both are asking residents to call 911 or go to the hospital only if it is an emergency. >> we must keep our hospitals

in the north bay, vandals damaged a holocaust memorial in santa rosa. it is the second time in two years that the fountain in santa rosa park has been damaged. it likely did not follow on it own. police are looking into it. the cemetery wants it looked into as hate crime. senator harry reid was by democrats, including president biden. >>'s remarkable journey has been told by so many, because it has been troubled by so few. liz: former praised -- -- -- --- president obama praised reid as

on december 30, crews cold off the -- called off the search. he was found quite a distance from northstar in an area considered too far to be included in search efforts. many have been left without running water or electricity for 2 weeks. electricity has been restored for a majority of residents but around 7000 customers are still without power. san francisco could be home to the nation's largest avocado tree. it is not the ideal climate for the tree, but a huge, very fruitful tree is thriving in a yard behind a hardware store in pacific heights. the tree is nearly 50 feet tall

with fruit the size of softballs. the new purchaser of the store discover the tree. he quickly gave away 60 to 70 of the fruit. >> the granddaughter of the person who opened the store said " this tree gave us so much luck." liz: it is going to be looked at this week to determine whether it is the biggest avocado tree in the country. avocado trees can die easily so this is remarkable. lisa: they take years to produce fruit. that is incredible. we are looking at a dry pattern

liz: you have likely noticed you are paying more at the grocery store now. statistics from the department of agriculture showed that prices increased by 6.4%. the next wave is going to be pantry staples, packaged and canned goods. there are multiple factors contributing to the high prices. >> based on their ingredient costs, that can go up.

normal for santa rosa, all of these were over 200 percent of normal. oakland is at 190%. sfo, 209%. with all of our dry days, these numbers will be slipping. looking at monday, starting out cloudy, then we break out into partly cloudy skies. tuesday, very little your highs today, very similar to yesterday, where we should be this time of year. we will delay warming a bit because of that fog. we will get into the 50's today in livermore. the cold start, writer afternoon before the high clouds invade --

the robot needs to be trained only once to navigate the lobby and hallways. it has even been adapted to call for an elevator. hotel corridors can be tricky to navigate, even for humans. what happens if this robot comes and i happened to be in the way? it is trying to work around me, and if i step in its path again, we could do sort of a dance currently? -- couldn't we? look at how it handles a crowded lobby. once it gets to the room, it calls the customer. >> you do not have to tidbit. there-- tip it.
