mayor of new york city tonight in the wake of one of the deadliest fires in the city's history. good evening and thanks for joining us, i am dion lim. right away would begin with developing news. 19 people have died in that fire in the bronx. a reporter from our sister station in new york city has been there all day. josh, what is the latest? reporter: first of people have been confirmed dead in this fire, including nine children. 13 more people are described as critical and in life-threatening condition. so the numbers may change sometime tonight. meanwhile investigators believe all of this started because somebody plugged in a faulty space heater. [sirens wailing] reporter: flames shot like a blowtorch from a third floor apartment. but fire was the least of their

problems as sunday morning turned to pandemonium at the twin parks northwest apartments. >> everything is black, the walls, the floor, the doors. it just got us out in time. reporter: it was instead the smoke. a thick column of smoke, black as night, that turned a 19 floor building into a death trap. an army of rescue workers foldout one lifeless body after another, fruitlessly attempting cpr. but late this afternoon, the death toll approached two dozen, in the worst loss of life in the new york city fire in more than three decades. >> this is a horrific, horrific, painful moment for the city of new york. >> my kid screamed and said, fire, reporter: it started in his third-floor duplex where he lives with his wife and eight kids, one of whom was trapped on the burning bed. he has burns on his nose from when he leapt through the flames

to rescue his daughter, who is also burned, but alive. but so many of his neighbors did not survive. >> i don't want to -- anybody's life -- i don't want to hear that. anybody dead in this fire? reporter: and of course, it was in that apartment where he had plugged in a space heater, that is what set his daughter's bed on fire. but the biggest mistake, investigators say, is when the family fled the apartment, they did not let the door close all the way behind them and that fed the fire with more oxygen. firefighters found victims, fatalities on every floor. live in the bronx tonight, abc 7 news. dion: what a horrifying chain of

events. we appreciate your time. we pushed out updates about the fire no abc 7 bay area news app including this one, as information was just coming in. we also livestreamed up its from fire officials. you can be the first to know by downloading the abc 7 area up and enabling push alerts. moving on, actor bob saget has died, found dead today at the ritz-carlton in orlando. he is best known for his starring role in "full house," which was based in san francisco. the house from the tv show is on brodrick street and is famously visited by fans. he had been touring the country doing standup comedy and had just before last night in their jacksonville. he had been at the san jose improv in november. saget was reportedly found in his hotel room by security and reported that on the scene. investigators say there were no

signs of fall play or drug use. with the omicron variant starting, experts say the demand for testing has never been more important, and there are long lines at sites across the bay area. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard guides us to explain why the bay area city says it being -- why it is being forced to scale back testing. cornell: that is because the health department says staffing issues may force testing sites to reduce their hours. but one supervisor is demanding answers tonight, anytime when testing is so. needed from santa rosa to antioch, where california national guard troops are assisting at this test site. >> feels good to come out and support the community. cornell: in san francisco, check out this line for testing at school district headquarters stretching around the block on sunday. >> we waited about two hours. >> omicron is on the rise, it is very important for us to get

tested. cornell: the school district says it has given 11,000 rapid test in the past week and distributed 50,000 home test kits. >> it is great that they are doing these testing sites. the lines are long, but people are being diligent about getting here. cornell: even a member of our abc 7 news vaccine team dr. patel, was challenged about finding a test after a possible covid exposure. >> i tested multiple days negative and i wanted to confirm with the pcr test, and i had to go to my doctor and wait over one hour in-line to get one. this is not a luxury everyone has. cornell: this department treated that some affiliate sites will temporarily reduce testing hours due to challenges beyond our control. please check your health system first for testing. do not go to the er for tests. supervisor matt haney calls that an acceptable

. >> this is something we should be prepared for. cornell: he says some test sites experienced shortages. >> all of a sudden testing capacity is slashed. the things i think in the midst of the greatest surge of this virus, since the start of the pandemic, that we need more answers, more oversight and accountability. cornell: he says he will collect hearing next week about solutions to keeping testing sites open and even expanding capacity. governor newsom proposed spending more than $2 billion to battle the pandemic, expand covid testing, california we had in the newsroom, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. dion: thanks. abc 7 is committed to getting a better bay area by focusing on your health. in the southbay, a tech interactive teamed up with the santa clarita apartment of public health to offer a free vaccine clinic. everyone who got their shot is granted free entry into the

museum. one mother told us she was anxious to get hurt five-year-old son boosted. >> he is the one who thought was least protected. and with the uptick in omicron in schools, they have had cases among every grade level this heard they were doing this, i brought him. dion: the fda just expended booster shot eligibility for 12 to 15-year-olds early this week. for more information on testing sites or if you have questions about the vaccine, you can always had to abc7news.com/coronavirus. happening right now, it is the biggest bay area sports day of the year so far. warriors superstar klay thompson is making his return after two and a half years away because of injury, and it went down to the wire, but the 49ers made it to the nfl playoffs. for the niners, it was pretty simple -- win and they are in. san francisco were in los angeles facing the rams.

they needed a late comeback and an interception over time to secure that victory. they won 27-24, and will face the dallas cowboys next week. at the chase center meantime,, klay thompso was back after 941 days, count them down, with a torn acl and a torn achilles. the start started tonight. chris alvarez will have highlights from both games coming up a little later in sports. first, covid rules just changed for health care workers in california. >> its major disaster waiting to happen. dion: nurses speaking out about new state covid guidance allowing health care workers to return to work right after testing, positive. and a group of students have an ultimatum for the school district. that changes the students are demanding. >> i am spencer christian. how about a string of mild and dry today? th

dion: nurses across california called for new guidelines for health care workers who test positive for covid. the new guidelines went into

effect yesterday. the state says health care workers who test positive for covid and show no signs of symptoms can go back to work immediately, without isolation, and without testing. they are required to wear and n95 mask. >> i think it is very callous, and it is putting our patients and ourselves in grave danger. dion: california's department of health did not respond this weekend to questions about whether the guidelines could expose patients to covid but a spokesperson says the district is temporarily adjusting the criteria due to critical staffing shortages in health care. in the east bay, oakland unified school district is responding to a request by a group of students for more covid protections. more than 150 students from oakland unified high school signed a petition threatening to walk off campus or return to online learning. the district spokesperson just released a statement saying that the district has ordered enough kn95 masks for all children, and

will hand them out as soon as possible. it has already distributed them to all the staff. the student petition set a deadline of january 17. speaking of, new mask guidance has led to mask shortages. some stores in the bay area are running out of n95 and surgical mas.health experts say ditch the fabric masks, because the best way to protect ourselves from the omicron variant is with at least a three-play surgical mask -- three-ply surgical mask. >> masking is a bare minimum recommendation, and to see people taking it so seriously, it just makes us as a store want to make sure we have what the community needs. and if the community is pressing to have the masks, we agree. dion: this hardware store is currently not limiting how many masks each customer can buy. even so, that is only as long as

covered in snow. >> so i followed the tracks and all of a sudden, i saw this dark shape underneath the tree. then he opened his eyes. i am pretty sure i screamed. [laughter] dion: volunteers used a sled to get the dog to safety. it took a few days to nurse the dog back to health, and then they reunited him with his owner. this is so rare to see, a reunion like this. spencer: just an amazing story, unbelievable. great for the dog, the owner, everybody. dion: the weather is looking pretty great for everybody. spencer: it is looking good. if you are looking for a dry spell, we have one coming our way. we have calm here is the view from our rooftop camera along the embarcadero under partly cloudy skies. a cool 49 in mountain view, 48 at half moon bay. here is the view from the

emeryville camera across the way, skies are becoming increasingly cloudy but we have a nice, clear view. 51 in santa rosa and napa, 47 in fairfield. getting chilly in the inland areas. the view from our camera looking over the bay bridge, these are the forecast features. clouds will increase overnight. not nearly as cold as last night. a dry and mild pattern will be with us for the week ahead and snow track remains to our north so we are not expecting any rain for a while. here is a forecast showing the increase in clouds tomorrow as the morning commute gets underway. skies will start to clear, giving us a sunny day tomorrow. overnight temperatures will drop to the upper 30's in fairfield and concord. but most of the locations will have inland areas in the low 40's and around the shoreline, mid-40s. highest tomorrow after 60 in the

half moon bay, 60's in the southbay and the north bay as well, upper teeth in the inland east bay. skipping ahead to wednesday evening, mid-week, we expect a few disturbances. we don't expect the rain in the bay area, but will come close. generally looking at a dry week of weatherhead going into next weekend. here is the accuweather 7-day forecast, three dry and mild days are coming our way wednesday with mostly sunny skies. clouds will increase thursday as we showed you the system that will come near but not hit the bay area. temperatures will drop off a couple of degrees. then on friday the skies get brighter and going into next weekend, mainly sunny skies and seasonal temperatures. that is your accuweather 7-day forecast. >> now abc 7 sports with chris alvarez. chris: welcome into chase center, klay thompson is officially back and we will get to that in a moment.

jennings with a touchdown. 24-24. into overtime. 27-24. stafford going for the deep ball. the interception to seal it. niners win 27-24 in overtime. they are going to dallas next week and in the wild-card round of the playoffs. >> it was fun. just trying to get back into it, with how many guys were down and how many guys had to step it of. it was -- i was so proud of everybody in the locker room. he never stopped fighting. >> i am just happy. we are fortunate enough to go to the playoffs. we were down bad in the first half but we fought back into it. i am just really happy. >> it wasn't stressful at all. our game plan was to go in 17-0. it is a testament to this team. he hit it on the head, you never know who is going to make the
