in for actor and comedian bob saget. kumasi: he was found dead in a florida hotel room. his passing is being felt here in the bay area. jobina: it is. he is best known for his role as america's dad in the 1990's in the sitcom full house, which was set in san francisco. we saw so many people come out -- they left flowers and stood with each other to remember a man who helped define a generation of american pop culture. scott lucas grew up watching full house. >> sort of touched everybody in my generation, my siblings, my cousins, all my friends. it raised a generation through the country. >> definitely sad news. he is the dead of the 1990's for everyone. jobina: he was found in his hotel room in orlando care and authority say no foul play is

suspected. he had just performed a show the night before. bob saget was 65 years old. coming up at 7:00, his friend and fellow comedian, gilbert gottfried, on his life and the last time the two spoke. reggie: thank you. we are seeing reaction from his costars on twitter. this is front -- from john stamos, who writes, i am in shock. i will never have another friend like him. i love you so much, bobby. and my heart is broken. i love you, bob. andrea barber played kimi on the show and shared this post, saying, this one hurts. yet the biggest part of anyone in hollywood. i am indebted -- guttedutteduttd will never be able to hug him again. kumasi: abc issued a statement saying that he will always be a member of the abc family.

reggie: now some covid headlines this morning as the omicron surge peeks across the country. we continue to deal with testing issues in the bay area. san francisco public health officials say some testing sites temporarily reduced hours due to challenges beyond our control. new york congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez has tested positive and is experiencing symptoms. she is vaccinated and boosted. chicago public schools will be closed for a fourth day today. the district and teachers union have not come to agreement. kumasi: pushback from new covid-19 guidelines for health-care workers. those who test positive without showing symptoms will not have to isolate and can go back to work. we know at least one group is not happy about this. >> the nurses union is pushing

back. the union is concerned about what this will do to hospitals like this one in walnut creek. they are concerned this will put hospital staff and patients at risk. this goes against what the cdc recommends. the new state guidelines say asymptomatic health-care workers can go back to work without isolating or testing. the cdc says even an even an evn asymptomatic patient should isolate for five days. doctors who favor the plan say it will help with the health care staffing shortage and will not put people in danger. >> before there were vaccines, the rate of transmission from providers to patients that has been documented is minuscule. now in the age of vaccines and boosters and ppe, we feel if someone has a negative test, even if they have some symptoms, given the shortages, they should be able to come to work. >> the nurses the nurses the nus

not right for nurses who have tested positive to go to work knowing they could potentially infect their patients. the state says it is doing this after exhausting every other option. they say hospitals should make every effort to have those who have tested positive only be treating covid patients. kumasi: konta unified unified unified ud staff will be required to wear a medical grade mask. each person will be given a new mask every week through the end of the school year. in all schools got a deep cleaning friday. students and staff are asked to get a covid test before returning to class, but it is not a requirement. reggie: police are investigating a deadly shooting in brentwood at an apartment complex yesterday afternoon. investigators say the victim was shot during a family disturbance.

reggie: immemorial will be held to honor the 19 people killed in a massive apartment fire. dozens of injured are still in the hospital this morning. it was a malfunctioning space heater that caused the fire. kumasi: new york city's called this one of the worst fires we have witnessed in modern history. of the people who died, nine of them were children. at least 63 others were injured, 13 critically. the flames quickly spread through the entire building. the father who lives in the apartment where the fire started describes the moments when he first saw his mattress ablaze. >> my kid said fire, fire. i see the fire on the mattress,

so i told everybody get out. >> the fire consumed that apartment and part of the hallway. the door to the apartment, when the residence left, was left open. it did not close by itself. the smoke spread through the building. thus the tremendous loss of life and other people fighting for their lives now in hospitals all over the bronx. kumasi: smoke detectors were working. around 200 firefighters responded to the fire. some of those firefighters remained in the burning building, rescuing residents even after oxygen tanks ran empty. the building owners say they are devastated by the loss of life and are cooperating with the investigation. kumasi: this was supposed to be a fun day at a north carolina mountain resort, but it turned into a terrifying situation for unsuspecting skiers. you can see the skiers on the

ski lift. all of a sudden, they are battered by this powerful blast of water from a snowmaking pipe. they were on the lift when this happened. >> all i remember was the metal bar flying up and then me flying up. i do not remember anything and then i remember opening my eyes belly first on the ground. kumasi: the resort says a skier trigger the incident after skiing over the pipe. two people were treated for injuries. reggie: a documentary about the life and career is in the works. it is expected to be an apple original film with oprah's production company. he was the first lack hollywood star to win an oscar ear and he passed away last week at the age of 94. there has not been a release date for the documentary.

hearing to discuss solutions for keeping test sites governor gavin newsom proposed spending $2 billion to battle the pandemic, which would pay for things like more covid testing and expanding hospital staffing. kumasi: highest new covid infections ever because of the highly infectious omicron variant affecting nearly every region of the country. new numbers are out this morning. jobina: those numbers are troubling. nearly 700,000 new covid infections are being reported every day. that has inundated hospitals and some parts of the country, with doctors warning things are brought -- about to break down. hospitals in new york state have stopped doing elective surgeries because of a shortage of staff and space. how soon will things get better? it depends according to the

nation's top epidemiologist. >> i expect this to peak in the next couple weeks. jobina: the impact on other parts of daily life are being felt. chicago schools are closed for the fourth day as teachers and the city battle over covid protocols. airlines are seeing more than 1000 cancellations daily and a new estimate predicts -- workers could be out sick. the u.s. economy could take a huge hit in the coming months because of this. kumasi: new guidance telling us to ditch those cloth masks has created a shortage of those kind of masks, the n95 nk 95 masks. >> masking is a bear minimum bare minimal recommendation. it makes us want to make sure we

have what the community needs. ifif have the masks, we agree. kumasi: the hardware store is not limiting how many masks customers can buy. you should wear at least a three ply surgical mask. reggie: the oakland unified school district is responding to a request from a group of students from a group of students for more covid protection. more than 150 students have signed a petition threatening to walk off campuses or return to online learning. the district spokesperson has released a statement saying the district has ordered enough masks for all students and will hand them out as soon as possible. it has already distributed them to staff. the student petition set a deadline for january 17. friday, 12 schools had to close because of a sick out by

who are immunocompromised will be eligible for a fourth dose of a covid vaccine this week. people with compromised immune systems are recommended to get three doses to be considered fully vaccinated. with the new change, moderately or severely immunocompromised people can seek out a booster shot five months after their third shot.
