that on its head and says instead of eating in a way that you're kind of living up to external standards, how about listening to what your body actually needs. the scientific term for this is interoceptive awareness. you can call it self-awareness or mindfulness, tuning into when you're hungry or full. some studies say this seems to be more effective. >> the big guy with the big words, dan. >> he always had the big words. miss that. >> dan, i know you had a whole episode on your podcast "ten percent happier" talking about this concept. you have four tips for adopting an anti-dieting out look. what's the first one? talking about this concept. >> the first one is honoring your hunger. this is really the principal notion of intuitive eating, or anti-diet. paying attention to whether

you're hungry or not. dieting often puts us into this mode of we're unable to listen to our body because we're overriding the -- we're so focused on what the external sources tell us we're not listening to what our body is actually telling us. we can go into this deprivation mode where certain foods become forbidden fruit and then we overeat. so what you want to do is learn how to honor your hunger and meditation, of course, is very helpful in this. it's not an overnight flip of the switch. when i started getting interested in intuitive eating years ago, it took a while for me to develop the skill of being able to listen to what my body was saying as opposed to sort of eating until i felt vaguely sick. this is a skill you can develop. >> many of our viewers know your food journey played out right here on "gma" weekend. one of my favorite moments of all time working with you and we'll roll this clip as we go. i'm sure you remember. remember when you gave up sugar

8:36 am
