>> from abc 7, live, breaking news. julian: a tsunami advisory has been issued for the west coast, including here in the bay area after a tsunami hit the largest island, sending waves flooding to the capital after an underwater volcano in the south pacific exploded in a violent russian -- eruption. we want to show it to you here. this is showing the massive as cloud -- ash cloud. stu nami advisories were also issued as far away as new zealand's north island. the warning centers sent tsunami waves of 2.7 feet, just shy of three feet high, on the largest island. no word on any injuries yet this morning. we want to get to meteorologist

lisa argen. what should we be watching for here in the bay area? lisa: we're looking at the spike in the sea level. the biggest spike we've seen has been over two feet in monterey. we've seen about 1.25 spikes, a quarter of a foot in san francisco. and the important thing to remember is this isn't one massive wave. it's a series of successive surges that create a lot of wave energy. with that energy, some of the bays and inlets would be affected that would otherwise be protected by oceans. that's what we are talking about . some of the ocean beaches have been closed. obviously, don't go in the water. stay away from the water. as we watch these minor preservation's come to the area, they have been minor, but some of the areas that are low-lying can experience some flooding. and within the next few hours, we'll continue to see this.
9:02 am
as i said, anywhere from one to three feet, the biggest spikes have been around monterey, with over two feet of a spike. so with that, we're going to be watching these sort of fade out throughout the next couple of hours. but in the meantime, anywhere from washington, california, oregon, all the way down the coast, people are urged to stay out of the water and take precautions as we seen some of these affect the bays and inlets that would otherwise be protected. julian: thank you, lisa. again, team coverage here. we do have sky seven headed to the marina, where an evacuation order has been put in place there. again, high tide is what we're watching right now. we want to check in with cornell barnard, live for us in sausalito. what are you seeing there? cornell: we are watching the water in the area of fort baker. we're on the north side of the golden gate bridge this morning, where we are seeing waves starting to surge on this rock

beach. we have actually just got here a few minutes ago, and a lot of people are taking notice of what appears to be this tsunmami approaching the bay area. just about every city has received an advisory or evacuation warning. as you said, yes, the marina is being evacuated. as we passed through marin county, we saw some sheriffs deputies down in sausalito, keeping an eye on the water. the sausalito police just put out an advisory on annexed alert, saying that they expect pretty much the worst king time you've ever seen, which could mean water lapping up onto bike lanes near sausalito, near mill valley. a lot of fishermen are here. other people have been taking pictures as soon as we got here, just watching the water pulse
9:04 am
and continue to come in. ocean beach has been evacuated,, just got some video from there on my phone of firefighters telling people to stay out of the water. get out of the water. stay away from the water, at least for the next hour as this advisory continues. we are seeing a coast guard vessel approach here. this is also a coast guard station. we haven't seen any boats here because they have been out monitoring the coast. we're told we have a vessel approaching here, keeping and i on what is going on here in the bay. back live here at the rock beach here at fort baker, continue to see some of the waves starting to pulse in, possibly a sign of this tsunami advisory. live in marin county, cornell bernard, abc 7 news.
9:05 am
julian: thank you for that live report. a live look from sky seven right now, this is the berkeley marina where those evacuation warnings have been put in place this morning. we are taking a close look at these boats to see if we see any rocking. that would be a sure sign of this to nami -- tsunami, and the waves rolling in. but it looks like those boats are calm at the moment. as lisa has been telling us, what we are expecting to see this morning will be pulsing tides. essentially, pulsing waves that will be rolling in throughout the day as we continue to watch this to nami advisory begin. we're taking these live images from sky seven overlooking the brooklyn molina -- marina, where things have been, at the moment. we know there have been tsunami advisories issued in local cities from mill valley to san francisco to emeryville. but again, this evacuation order

flooding from those, but more importantly, what we can't see is the undertow in the actual recurrent that's below that. these rip currents are going to be coming in surges. it's enough to pull somebody in ankle deep water out to see, and you can be a victim or a statistic, either one of which you don't want to become. julian: of course not. and that's why ocean beach is closed because of those rip currents. that can be so dangerous for folks who are unsuspecting, think in the water is fine, and then get pulled in. on that note, are there any active search or rescue missions happening at this hour for folks who weren't able to get to before the beach was closed. jonathan: thankfully, we have some amazing community members, a lot of support. everybody so far has been adhering to public servants requests to stay out of the water and away from the coastline. there are a couple of things you can do in addition to listening to us. if you can become better prepared by doing an internet

perspective for what folks can expect to see? jonathan: absolutely. so, an advisory is going to below a three-foot morning. what we are seeing is a 2.5 feet surge coming through. in califorin califorin the advisor means we're not merely going to be seen flooding from thesekee'een in some of the pictures from the tsunami on the island. we're not going to see that here in san francisco or, respectively, in california. what we are going to see is the surges of waves, more importantly, the surges that are going to be three feet or less. they come with a very strong undertow and rip current that can pull somebody ankle deep water out to see. so those are the things we're really going to be looking at. in relation to see anything

ocean beach right now because they are closed, it can pull them in and take them to danger, making it difficult for rescue crews to help someone. we continue to take live images from sky seven right now as we see the waves crashing and on much of the coastline as we continue to monitor the tsunami advisory that's been in place for several hours now. getting word that this is ocean beach and it's closed, and we don't see anyone on the beach. so that is a good sign right there. we have also been telling you about the evacuation orders that have been in place for places like the berkeley marina. let many of you might have woken up to those push alerts on your phone, from nick so, other alert systems, as well as the abc 7 news app, which you should of course download, letting you know about the tsunami advisory. from noe valley to san francisco to emeryville, we've been sharing the alerts throughout the day, letting them know this and advisory is in place.

we are taking a live look over sky seven, producers correct me if i'm wrong. this is half moon bay and we are closely watching these waves as we continue to follow this who nami advisory that's been in effect for several hours -- tsunami advisory that's been in effect for several hours. this appears to be near the half moon bay golf links right now. if you're just joining us, want to get you up to speed with what we know for the snow so far -- with what we know so far. as tsunami hit tonga. keep in mind, this is 5400 miles away, after an underwater eruption happened last night. i believe lisa said around 8:00 p.m. last night. this is still affecting us here in the bay area many hours later. we know that there have been advisories issued by cities and municipalities up and down the bay area from mill valley to santa cruz to emeryville, san francisco, and of course ocean

beach, that is closed in san francisco, and also berkeley marina, where there is an evacuation order for the folks actually living on their houseboats. we also heard from the san francisco fire department public information officer jonathan baxter, who told us that we shouldn't expect any major flooding from this event. we will more so see pulsing waves and tides that come in and out throughout the day. the danger here is the rip current that you can't see with the naked eye, and that's white beaches like ocean beach are closed this morning. also, just not a good idea to visit any of the bay area beaches for some involving rip currents and those waves, supposed to be, or expected to be contained at three feet or less. of course, we'll stay on top of this throughout the day and the latest is always on at abc7news.com, our mobile app, and ctv. you may remember this scene from 2011, a massive earthquake off

the coast of japan generated a tsunami that caused $20 million ame ata harb. right now, the santa cruz sentinel is reporting flooding at the harbor. the again, these are images -- i want to make this very clear -- from 2011. we are not seeing this magnitude, this force from any of the waves, the tides that bir this morning. and it is my understanding that that is not what is expected as we continue to watch the tsunami advisory, a watch, not a warning, but again, and advisory. to catch us up to speed, we want to check back in with meteorologist lisa argen. lisa: just to piggyback on that, down on the central coast, san luis obispo, they had the highest amount of water predicted above the tide, which has been about 3.62 feet. so we've had some steep fluctuations around the states. back home, you can see a little wind shaking the camera.

julian: welcome back to our live team coverage of the tsunami advisory that has been issued for much of the west coast and, of course, that includes us here in the bay area. the live images you're looking at right now coming to us from sky seven. this is just south of half moon bay. we are beginning to see some pretty decent waves with up there -- whip up there. this tsunami advisory has been in effect for several hours now. the rip current could be just under those waters. that's why we are hearing from fire departments, coast guard telling folks, do not go to the beaches today. it is just not safe.

and of course, meteorologist lisa argen has been tracking this throughout the morning for several hours now. we check back in with her right now. lisa: we've seen sudden drops and quick runoffs, and the gauges are responding in richmond, in alameda. but the strongest we've seen in terms of water rise has been along the central coast, from port st. louis, and also around santa cruz, where we've had minor flooding, where the water level has come up over 2.5 feet. we have high tide after 9:00 this morning. we had about a half a foot, little bit higher, .25. the otherwise we are looking at king tides expectations, or in the next few hours, will have the higher waves, stronger recurrence. we're asking people to stay off the beaches, out of the water as we see intermittent surges that will continue with the higher waves and then it will drop. it's not one big wave. it's a lot of water that's being

transported with the energy within it all the way across the globe. as we look at live doppler seven, we have high clouds throughout the bay area today. it's a system offshore not bringing any rain towards us. southern california can see a few drops. as we look at the golden gate bridge, cloudy skies, temperatures mild. check out that 61 degrees, half moon bay. this panel shows 40's and 50's but we're still looking at cool conditions in the valleys in the north bay. 38, that's a 23 degrees spread from santa rosa to half moon bay right now, 47 in concord, 52 in nevada. air quality is not great. we have the high clouds with moderate air quality. you can see the yellow here all across the bay area. this is going to stay with us through tomorrow into the holiday on monday and even on tuesday. so we need some wind like we had yesterday that cleared us out a bit. now there's northerly winds are beginning to subside. and a look from our roof camera right now, with moderate air

quality takes us through tuesday. so current 24 hour temperature change, while we have some areas warmer, livermore has been dropping with cold temperatures 15 degrees warmer than they were. you see some of the boats in emeryville, the harbors and ports responding to the higher than average serve due to the tsunami advisory. remember, the warning is a big step above. the other is below, just to get -- alert is below, just to get you out of the water, out of the beaches. otherwise, mild weather starting the weekend. the dry weather continues into next weekend. we will be hit with high clouds today. tomorrow, slightly cooler into monday and tuesday. it's after that where we see some changes because storm track stays well to the north each and every day of next week. and then we'r going to see somee warmer weather, perhaps record high temperatures next week. 60's today, that's above average. we

people about this advisory. the pier was not evacuated, but they were telling folks just to stay away from the water. but a lot of folks did leave. some people chose to stay, a lot of people taking pictures of what we are seeing right now that is a lot of wave action coming in and out here at four-bagger. he was coast guard cutters are monitoring the coast here as a precaution. we are live in marin county. julian: thank you for all of those live reports throughout the morning. we want to check in with lisa argen for a final look at the forecast. lisa: julian, we are looking at the cloudy skies to start, mild conditions, mainly 50's and 60's, but a cool spot in the valleys from the east bay, north bay right now. otherwise, we keep this forecast
