been lost. we are getting a whole lot of information on the extent of the damage. there are reports people are having trouble breathing. some boats have been damaged. the tsunami advisory got the attention of thousands of -- in the bay area today. a surge of water poured into one waterfront community. cornell barnard has the story. >> holy [beep] holy [beep] cornell: this was the scary movie -- moment, ripping the front off of her home casting two boats and her dog adrift. >> the water came in and took the back out. started pulling it to see right there. i ran inside and grab my daughter. packed up my car. cornell: the tsunami surge

returned in cycles. strong enough to send the rogue, runaway dock crashing into support beams. >> the docket definitely was picking up momentum as it was heading towards this building. that was a little scary. >> seeing these waves rolling in and the water significantly higher. high tide sort ot ot for lack of a better expression. cornell: the san francisco fire department advised people to stay away from ocean beach. >> we advise people to stay away from the water and the coastline in san francisco today. cornell: people flock to the beach with cameras ready to capture big waves. >> i'm hoping for bigger waves to just view. >> i don't get this excitement every day and want to see it for myself. cornell: the tsunami advisory

close baker beach and people on the peer were warned about danger. >> i'm a science teacher so i'm curious about these types of things. cornell: u.s. coast guard was seen patrolling the shoreline. a day no one saw coming. did you ever expect this would happen? >> i need to take tsunami alerts more seriously now. cornell: this is what is left of one of those boat docks. the ramp is underwater. neighbors here say they did get alerts on their phone about the tsunami advisory, damage from today's event is still being added up. abc 7 news. dion: look at this. jacob mcclellan was out testing this morning when he came across this site in capitola village. he told me he was planning to go surfing but given the sporadic swell, he is planning to go another day.

this is what it looked like in nearby santa cruz where tsunami waves flooded the harbor. abc 7 news reporter ryan curry is live at the santa cruz harbor with much more on this. ryan: good evening. santa cruz residents were on hilar throughout most of -- high alert for most of the day. water levels rose in the santa cruz area to conscious levels. some residents saying as these levels went down many of them felt more comfortable going back to the water. santa cruz residents on high alert saturday. >> we watch the water push the lower deck. ryan: edward martinez was monitoring the water levels in the morning. he says originally he didn't think the tsunami advisory was much of a problem. he says the level kept rising. causing him some concern. >> maybe this is a big deal.

we are looking out towards the beach. you see the flume behind me. the water keeps going up and up and up. ryan: coast guard crews monitored the beach to control the level. beaches were covered in debris. >> we came out aboutboutboutbout -- 7:30. we heard there was a tsunami warning. ryan: christy hughes began her day on high ground to avoid any potential tsunami. there was not much to see during -- near the water but emergency crews were all over the beaches. >> you can see at the harbor there were a lot of people out, police. you can see almost a river flowing out to the ocean. ryan: despite the threat, beachgoers were not deterred from going near the water. surfers were scouted in the ocean and many still got close

to the water throughout the day. >> we listen for sirens. we didn't hear until almost 11:00, then it went crazy. ryan: more and more people did return to the shoreline as the day went on. a couple residents told me it is much less crowded than it usually is for a saturday afternoon. mostly because a lot of them were staying home due to the tsunami alert. dion: probably a good idea. next to you. today was much different in santa cruz than back in 2011. that was when a massive earthquake off the coast of japan generated a tsunami in california. it caused $20 million worth of damage to the harbor. despite warnings to stay out of the water, emergency crews were kept busy. two surfers had to be rescued. one of their boards boat -- broke because the waves were so

powerful. they are expected to be ok. two fishermen were swept into the water at san gregorio state beach. they were able to swim back to shore. more than one hundred people were evacuated from the brooklyn marina. police say the evacuation was limited to the docks and boats along the shoreline. roads near the marina remained open. authorities got the all clear from emergency services at 3:50 this afternoon. everyone is urged to use caution on boats and docks. for more on this let's get to spencer christian. we have been saying this all evening. probably not a great idea to get on the water. spencer: let me give you a closer look. this is very important information. this is a snow advisory. nonetheless we should take these points of interest seriously.

issued this morning for the entire west coast of the united states. until further notice. still in effect right now. potentially dangerous surging waves. here are some precautionary measures we should keep in mind. stay away from the beaches. be alert. do not turn your back on the water. keep up with all the advisories and alerts. we are staying on top of that for you. we will have more to report as more turns up. dion: thanks. we do have much more coverage on our website. including the differences between an advisory, a watch and they warning and how you could prepare for a tsunami. moving on to developing news now, police in a number of cities are stepping up patrols at synagogues and other locations associated with the jewish community. that is as a hostage situation continues in the dallas-fort worth area. one hostage has been released but others are being held tonight.

abc news reporter alex presha has more. alex: the situation unfolded in the dallas-fort worth area. an armed suspect has taken hostages at congregation beth israel, the police department swat evacuated residents. abc news says the hostage has demanded that a woman be released from prison, a known terrorist incarcerated at carswell air force base. she was sentenced to 86 years in prison after being convicted in manhattan federal court in 2010 of trying to kill u.s. soldiers and fbi agent's in afghanistan. the fbi and local authorities and hostage negotiators are on the scene. the white house and homeland security sec. has been briefed on the situation. dion: san francisco police just sent out this tweet saying together with our law

dion:dion: six people hospitalized after a shooting outside eugene, oregon. police responding to multiple gunshots outside of a concert hall. it is unknown if it was random or targeted. a big winter storm is sweeping across 33 states right now. bringing rain, snow, and freezing cold temperatures. over a foot of snow falling in north dakota and heading southeast through sunday. more snow is anticipated as the storm moves northeast into monday. 75 million americans on high alert. some getting supplies before the storm. >> getting groceries and

supplies. just trying to get everything ready before they run out of groceries. dion: the governor of north carolina deployed 200 national guard soldiers. several states in the southeast have declared a state of emergency. there are 2000 flight cancellations sunday. as of today you could get an at-home covid-19 test and/or at no cost through private insurance. you could buy the test the testt in stores. you could have them paid for at the time of purchase or get reimbursed by submitting a claim. insurers must play for -- pay for up to eight tests per month. there is no limit if the doctor orders more tests. all of this is part of president biden's plan to increase access to at-home rapid tests. the biden administration has launched a website where you could order four rapid tests per household. put in those orders starting wednesday.
