tsunami hit the country of tonga many in the tonga community here in the bay area say there's still waiting to hear if their family and friends are safe tsunami waves, bring chaos and damage to one north bay neighborhood. there's a long mild dry spell coming our way and i'll have the forecast abc 7 news at 11 starts right now. building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. well, here's my front door. mmm, well it is called beach boulevard. but today the ocean surge right over the road and up to a woman's front door huge waves the result of a tsunami that did damage to the bay area.

holy. and with that we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion limb as you can see over the past few hours the tsunami advisory has been dropped for almost the entire california coast. it remains now in just parts of santa barbara and san luis obispo counties to our south and del norte county to our north are in the bay area we went on alert at 5 o'clock this morning. now that is shortly after an underwater volcano eruption near the islands of the country of tonga satellite images from noah show the blast which triggered a tsunami advisory before alaska hawaii and the entire west coast of the united states. and away from the coast. now despite the warnings several people had to be rescued from the water today waves at ocean beach were so strong. they even snapped a surfboard san francisco firefighters safely brought one server to shore this afternoon then heard

screams from another surfer in the water. he was also brought in to safety. safety is what the tongan american community here in the bay area is hoping for they still anxiously waiting to hear from family and friends on the islands abc 7 news reporter tim. johns spoke to some local tongans tonight and shares their stories. jessica one pray because becausc how for many in the talking community the past 24 hours have been an emotional roller coaster. none of us have heard from anybody anytime after an underwater volcano erupted in the south pacific the nearby island country of tonga was hit by aevtati tsumi the effects were even felt here in california some 5,400 miles away now many tongans in the bay area say they haven't heard from friends or family re chaka timoni is the pastor of first tongan assembly of god church in san carlos. his son is currently in tonga. we still trust even though we

haven't heard from them for almost 24 hours now. but we believe in you know have hope that something. that's gonna come out from this. it's a similar story for many tongans across the region michelle thomas essay helps run a tongan restaurant in grocery store in redwood city family is is a huge thing. in the polynesian culture, and so if a couple families are are being affected. know it affects all of us thomas essay says her heart breaks for those still in the country many of whom come from humble backgrounds. you can't help but wonder how how they're going to be able to rebuild right after this but despite the hardships that the tongan people are facing those i talk to on saturday night say they're confident that the community will recover that includes reverend tymani who says his people are strong, but he still requests one thing from those wishing to help. i'm just asking anybody. who believe in god please? remember tonga, you know prayers

in redwood city tim johns abc 7 news. and we are thinking of them as well. we'll take a live look now at this beach in santa cruz pretty hard to see in the dark, but the water does look pretty calm right now. that is the good news now here is a time-lapse from that camera earlier quite a difference. you can see one of the tsunami surges with the water reaching well past our camera view just covers the entire beach there now the water does recede fairly quickly afterwards today though was a much different scene in santa cruz and back in 2011. want a massive earthquake off the coast of japan generated a tsunami in california. it caused 20 million dollars worth of damage to the santa cruz harbor. this rock beach near fort baker in marin county. people came out to check on their boats and to keep an eye on that tide. and some dramatic moments as

haddelstad's home casting two boats and the talk adrift into richardson bay. the water just came in took the dock. daughter packed up my car. for several hours to tsunami surge returned in cycles strong enough to send the rogue runaway dock crashing into support beams. the apartment complex the doc dc definitely was picking up a momentum as it was heading toward this building and that was a little scary seeing these waves rolling in and the water level being significantly higher so think king tide but sort of on steroids who were lack of a better expression. department advised people to stay away from ocean beach reevaluate. friends that they involved going into the water or near our

coastline san francisco for today many people still flock to the beach cameras ready to capture any big waves. they're bigger, but kind of hoping for even bigger waves to just view, you know, don't get this kind of excitement every day and want to see it for myself the tsunami advisory closed baker beach and folks on fort baker pier were warned about the possible danger. i'm a science teacher so about these types of things and wanted to come see it first hand us coast guard cutters were seen patrolling the shoreline. it was a day. no one saw coming. did you ever expect this would happen? no, i will take tsunami alerts more seriously now check it out. this is what's left of one of those botox involved in today's event the ramp to that dog is now underwater neighbors here in marin county say, yes, they did get alerts on their phone about the tsunami advisory damage from today's. event is still being added up in tiburon cornell barnard abc 7 news.

meantime a tsunami advisory was issued in southern california as well this morning all beaches were ordered to close an orange county the tsunami surge came in footlong swells and strong currents residents were encouraged to stay out of the water. primika samuel oye naysunami warning was up to now that is the samoan language you're hearing as a us national weather service office announces the tsunami warning from pago pago in american samoa. a warning is a stronger level than an advisory, which is what we had here in the bay area people were told to get to higher ground immediately. and here is video from fiji. the island was issued a tsunami warning encouraging residents to stay away from the shorelines. you can see here that water reaching the property lines causing flooding in nearby. close the water reached nearly 100 feet inland from the shoreline. and sky 7 was up along our coastline this morning take a look we flew from san francisco to santa cruz checking out that

tsunami activity. sky 7 also over the berkeley marina today as more than a hundred people were evacuated following the tsunami advisory police say the evacuation was limited to the docks and boats along the shoreline roads near the moreno remained open authorities. got the all-clear from the state. some emergency services at 350 this afternoon. everyone is still urged to use caution on boats and dogs. all right. let's bring in abc 7 news weather anchor spencer christian now with a look at the science behind those tsunamis because even though things have subsided a little bit there are still things we need to keep an eye out for that's true dion as a matter of fact caution, which you mentioned earlier is still the operative word, although the tsunami advisory for the bay area and for much of the california coast has been canceled. so let's review what we had in effect earlier. the advisor is issued this morning for the entire coast of continental us that includes coastal, california, oregon washington. it was canceled this evening for a virtually all locations except for as you pointed out earlier a

santa barbara san luis obispo san luis, obispo and del norte county coastlines strong currents are weakening now potentially dangerous waves are easing still though. it's wise to stay away from beaches avoid harbors and marinas be alert when you're near the coastline. don't turn your back on the on the water and said advisories as some sneaker waves could still develop but of course the the threat is diminishing now, which is good news. i'll have the accuweather. 7 news at 11 the peaceful ending to a hostage situation at a texas synagogue that even had police here in the bay area on alert and free at-home covid tests.

developing news a hostage situation at a synagogue in texas has ended with all hostages rescued safely. this situation had police departments on alert around the country including san francisco the sfpd tweeted today that they were coordinating with local jewish community organizers to keep the city safe. abc news reporter christine sloan explains how the situation in texas ended just hours ago. a dramatic scene coming to an end in north, texas a hostage situation at the congregation beth israel synagogue in a suburb outside of fort worth coming to an end sometime around 9 pm today this evening the hrt the hostage rescue team breached the synagogue. they rescued the three hostages and the subject is deceased a massive response from the fbi swat teams and several local police departments the absolute key in hostage. negotiation is gathering

information. how much information can you gather? either through the hostage taker or through other means how many people are in there? is there anybody that's hurt and what is his state of mind sources familiar with the investigation? tell abc news an armed man took four people hostage including a rabbi the suspect demanding the release of a known hakistani terrorist off y'all sadiki who is serving 86 years at carswell air force base near fort worth. she had alleged ties to al qaeda and was convicted in 2010 of attempted murder of us soldiers. and fbi agents in afghanistan the white house and department of homeland security were briefed on the situation throughout the day synagogues across the country including several in the dallas area are on high alert the entire jewish world understands and knows about this incident. i've had many calls from israel and we are here to support the community in any way we can

christine sloan abc news. right. once again, let's get back to the weather in spencer. it's so interesting we went from this abundance of water to dry conditions in the forecast. oh, yeah. we're also happy gloriously happy about all the rain. we had water levels coming back to average in fact above average and now we're in a dry spell that may last at least a week or longer. let's take a look at how calm conditions are right now surface winds are calm to you know, four or five miles per hour. it's not very often. we see wind speeds here at the surface in the bay area under 10 miles per hour, but that's we have tonight with partly cloy vp camera looking across the embarcadero 56 degrees here in san francisco right now. also 56 at san jose 53 oakland mountain view 54 55 half moon bay 53 santa clara and a nice clear view from the east bay hills camera looking across the bay towards san francisco 42 degrees right now, santa ros. to our cool spot 46 novato napa 47 43 fairfield 49 a piece in concord and livermore and from susho tower and unobstructed

view of san francisco. these are forecast features tsunami advisory canceled tonight. that's good news partly cloudy overnight slightly cooler tomorrow than it was today. and this dry pattern will continue well into next week overnight forecast animation looks like this. we'll see lots of high clouds passing over but basically it will appear to be a clear evening here clear overnight here at the and we'll start the day tomorrow with a few high clouds as well, but it'll be a bright sky as the high clouds will not be very thick. so on we go to overnight conditions. lots of high clouds even at the coast though, we may see or at the coast. i should say some low clouds as well. so mostly cloudy there partly cloudy elsewhere overnight low temperatures in our inland areas mainly in the low or low to mid 40s right around the bayshore. and on the coast. we'll see some mid to upper 40s and highs tomorrow will range from 59 half moon bay to only 58 in the city right around the bay shoreline most locations will have high temperatures ranging from 60 to about 62 degrees down in the south bay. it'll be a little bit milder 62

to about 64 degrees in most locations inland east bay will be quite cool with a high of only 56 at antioch upper 50s at concord and livermore and then moving up to the north bay. we'll see. 58 at napa 58 san rafael 60 at santa rosa and 62 at cloverdale. and here's the accuweather 7-day forecast. let me back away. so you get a good look at tomorrow mainly bright skies tomorrow with a few lingering high clouds in the early morning hours. maybe even some low clouds fog near the coast then on monday. with the king jr. today mlk day will be a dry and pleasant day mainly bright skies tuesday or wednesday. not much change bright skies with a few high clouds high temperatures only around 60 to 62 degrees from the coast from the bay rather to inland, but it starts to warm up on thursday and look at friday and saturday highs in the mid 60s around the bayshore line and inland and low 60s on the coast. so with this dry spell we'll get a little bit of a warm-up late in the week going into next

it is not. county water almost reaches the bottom of the bridge there now in santa cruz waves flooded the harbor and a parking lot today and as the waters rose, so did the fear in many people. today's tsunami was the result of a massive underwater eruption in the pacific ocean near the island nation of tonga. it was so big noaa satellites could see it clearly and as the wave subsided so did anxiety along our coast while we saw noticeably higher water levels are worst fears didn't materialize. here's abc 7 news reporter ryan curry with that story. santa cruz residents on high alert saturday and we were watching the water push the lower deck. of the wharf up and the wharf was really moving edward martinez was out monitoring the water levels in the morning.

he says originally he didn't think the tsunami advisory was much of a problem, but he says the water level kept rising especially towards the harbor causing him some concern and we're kind of like, okay. maybe this is a big deal. and we were looking out towards the beach and obviously you see the flume behind me. all of a sudden the flume disappeared and the water just kept going up and up and up and up all day long coast guard cruise patrol the beach to monitor the water level beaches across the santa cruz area were covered in debris and water levels near capitola were much higher than they were usually were well we came out about 7:30. we'd heard that there was a tsunami warning so we stayed up on the bluff. christy hughes said she began her day on high ground to avoid any potential tsunami. says there wasn't much to see near the water but says emergency crews were all over the beaches. you could really see it at the harbor. there were a lot of people out there were a lot of police and

firefighters and you could see almost like a river flowing out to the ocean, but despite the tsunami threat beach goers were not deterred from going near the water surfers were spotted in the ocean and many others still got close to the water throughout the day. we were listening for sirens from about 7:30 in the morning all we didn't to almost 11 and then we heard it go crazy. lots of sirens as the day went on more residents returned to the beach. however, some locals did tell me that for a saturday. it was much less crowded than it usually is mostly because of the tsunami a threat that was going on in the early part of the day in santa cruz ryan curry abc 7 news. and you can check out video from today's tsunami on the abc 7 bay area connected tv app. it's available for apple tv android tv, amazon fire tv and roku. well, you can now get an at-home covid-19 test at no cost through your private insurance and starting wednesday. you'll also be able to order them online from the federal
